My wife picked Gray Moss Inn for Mother's Day this year, and since we hadn't been back since the transition to a Mexican restaurant, we were curious to see how it had changed. We booked a 1:30 reservation about 10 days in advance. My in-laws arrived around 1:15 and we got there shortly before our reservation time, but we still didn't get seated until around 1:45. To be fair, it was Mother's Day and the restaurant was busy, although there were a few empty tables while we waited. One thing they absolutely got right was the remodel. The old space used to feel dark and cramped, but the updated interior feels much more open, modern, and inviting. Our waitress was also excellent throughout the meal--attentive, kind, and clearly doing her best to keep up with a packed dining room. Unfortunately, that's where most of the positives ended for us. The chips were thicker than usual but still good, and while the salsa had decent flavor, it had almost no heat at all. We also ordered guacamole without onions, but it came across very bland and could've used more lime, seasoning, and some jalapeño to brighten it up. My wife did enjoy her strawberry margarita, which was both flavorful and noticeably strong. I ordered the mole enchiladas and found the mole sauce surprisingly flat and lacking depth. Other dishes around the table were described as just okay overall, although the kids were very happy with the thick, fluffy pancakes. The biggest issue was timing. We didn't receive our entrees until almost 3:00 PM, which made for a very long wait, especially with kids at the table. To the restaurant's credit, they brought out two slices of cake to apologize even though we never complained. Overall, we left pretty underwhelmed, especially considering the occasion. The excellent table-side service couldn't fully make up for the slow kitchen and uneven food quality. I'd be willing to give them another try on a less hectic day, but this visit didn't quite live up to expectations. read more

Valentine's Day supper with my beautiful wife. Our first at Grey Moss Inn and everything was great. We arrived just a few minutes early and were seated in the flower room with absolutely no waiting. Drinks and appetizers were served quickly and our server was very polite and friendly. Our food was delivered just as we finished appetizers and it was delicious. This is an older restaurant with a rich history and we enjoyed the fact that it is one of the most haunted restaurants in the state. We had a wonderful valentines evening. read more

Wow, I came here for dinner and they had live music. The food is good, as well as the ambiance, and the staff is very friendly. The first time I came I ordered the sampler for just my husband and I as an appetizer. It turns out it was so big that we didn't eat dinner. It was a combination of all the sample items on the menu. I wanted to take my mom for a happy hour somewhere different. I saw that Grey Moss does have a happy hour and didn't pay attention that it has changed to a Mexican restaurant. We did the drive and said mind as well try it. The restaurant was full. I truly love the setting and how rusty it looks. We got seated and I decided to order everything they had on the happy hour menu. We waited and waited seated in the small room until a customer told us look they keep on bringing the food and sending it back they believe it is our food. I went chasing the waiter and yes it was our food. When they brought it to our table the food was already cold. I expressed that and the waiter brushed it off like I told him absolutely nothing. Everything almost tasted it the same at the end but that was my fault ordering everything on that happy hour menu. Couple of the dishes weren't bad. But will I return? I don't think so! I finally got the chance to try grey moss since it turned into a Mexican restaurant and I was super excited about it! Pre pandemic days it was my favorite steakhouse. I'm bummed it closed down but so excited they revamped it and breathed new life into it. After all , San Antonio always needs another Mexican restaurant! The new owners seem to really put love and thoughtfulness into their restaurant so major props to them. Our waiter(s) were the sons of the owner and they were great. I ordered the salmon - the rice and veggies were PERFECTION. I'd order this again for the sides for sure. The sauce, impeccable. So much flavor. However, the salmon was severely lacking flavor and unfortunately a tad overcooked and dry. sooo much potential though and I think it can be easily corrected. I'm not sure if they left the skin on the salmon but I do suggest to the chefs to leave it on ! Season it well ! It would take the salmon from a 5 to a 10 easily. The mango margarita was amazing. The bar did take a very long time (unless you walked up to it but most of us were ordering from the table) but the drinks were strong and super flavorful. I'd definitely try more. Due to the crowd, maybe they could have a separate bar to prepare drinks ordered from the tables since they do seem to have quite a lot of walk up service from waiting patrons. My friends ordered the greymoss platter. Wow what a dish to have for a big party! This could easily be split among 4-5 people if not more depending on your hunger levels. 10/10 for presentation and taste. I give it a 3 solely because the salmon was undercooked and lacked flavor and the waitstaff/bar didn't seem to be able to keep up with the crowd. Maybe a bit shortstaffed. This restaurant is quietly tucked away on Scenic Loop in Grey Forest. Be very cautious and aware that the speed limit is highly enforced at 20 mph. But, we were introduced to this restaurant for a couples night out gathering by our close friends. Plenty of dirt lot parking and they have a large outdoor patio seating with live music. We decided to sit indoors. All of us ordered margaritas and fajitas- chicken, shrimp, and beef. Complimentary chips and the warm salsa were yummy. I have never been served warm salsa at any restaurant before, so this was a nice touch. We also asked for their spicy salsa sampler (complimentary), I can tolerate high heat... they were tasty, but not spicy enough lol . My fave was the red salsa pictured at top of the sampler. The small size margarita was huge lol. I enjoyed the frozen mango marg. The fajita meats were seasoned and cooked perfectly. The grilled veggies were just ok. Plates also came with a cup of rice, barracho beans, small guac, and warm tortillas. A little overpriced for the portion compared to other restaurants we've been to. At the beginning, our servers were attentive, but as the restaurant became more busy... we were not checked on as much- did not receive water refills, whether we liked our food, and we had to flag down someone to get our bills! Hidden gem located in the middle of nowhere, this restaurant offers a quiet atmosphere for some good eats. I will say the food is on the overpriced side (5 dollars for lemonade, our server neglected to tell us no free refills ) for the portions and the flavors were not exactly mind blowing. It's more of an elevated mexican cuisine... nice scenery so it would be better in the fall for outdoor seating. We were taken to some back building where we were kind of forgotten about. It was our first time visiting Grey Moss Inn and it was such a nice surprise food is 100% Mexican the restaurant itself is really pretty will love to visit again at night and sit outside the patio is decorated really nicely and it gives that cozy vibe. We ordered the Mexican lasagna and it it was soooo goood !! For appetizers we ordered the chicharrón de ribeye and the queso fundido and will 100% recommend both portions where really good we were 4 people and we even had enough to go. Super excited to try Grey Moss, but unfortunately I was let down. The place was not busy, they had about 6 tables on the patio, one in the dining room and one high top table all with people. We (party of 2 including myself) sat at the other high top in the bar area. The placement of this table is terrible. It is next to the area were servers are wrapping silverware and the area were they drop the dirty drink cups for the bar to clean. It took about 10-15 minutes before Zeke acknowledge us after he was given a heads up that we were being seated there. There were two people working the bar Zeke and I'm assuming the other gentlemen's name was Charlie. Once Zeke dropped off the chips he mentioned he'd come back for our drink order. Another 10 minutes passed before he returned for our drink order. We ordered the frijoles con veneno along with a house margarita & a sprite. It took about 10 minutes before we got our drinks. Someone (I'm assuming a Tia, because Charlie acknowledged her as such) brought our frijoles con veneno to the bar and told Zeke. It sat there for about 10 minutes on the bar before it was brought to us. It was good, I'm not gonna lie. The flavor was there it was hot but to watch it sit on the bar for about 10 minutes, was ridiculous. I'm not sure why Zeke or Charlie couldn't have asked Tia to bring it to our table. After waiting amble time to order Zeke acknowledged us again and we just asked for the check because it was already 8:20, they close at 9. Overall, the service was terrible. The organization of the bar was not there. I've been to other restaurants whom have had one bartender keep up with more business than Grey Moss had today. read more

Went here last night for a book club. We had a reservation for 20. Unfortunately, they had two large groups ahead of that were not ready to leave quite yet. While waiting, some of us decided to get drinks at the bar. Almost everyone got margaritas. I decided to get a rum and coke. Everyone thought their margaritas were good. I enjoyed my rum and coke but find that it is hard to make a bad rum and coke. We were eventually seated. They had to separate our group a bit. 12 at one table and 8 at another table. Both tables were near each other in the main room. I did not find too much of an issue with this. It might have been even better this way. We were there for book club, and it might have been harder to hear people at the end of the table if there were more people at it. For other people who are going to make a reservation for a large group, you might want to tell them how important it is for your group to be all together. The server was very nice and accommodating. When we were all ordering, we were telling him who would be on which receipt. He explained very well that he was going to put everyone on the same ticket at first so that everyone's food would come out at the same time and that he would separate them at the end. All the food did come out at the same time, and he did separate the receipts later when it was time to pay. I ordered the mole de pollo. The food was delicious. Parking was a bit of an issue when we got there. I heard from another person in the group that there was extra parking. Maybe some signs pointing to where the extra parking would be good. I also highly suggest that they put some lighting in the parking lot. My fiance ended up using the flashlight on her phone to see. I suggest this place for its food and service. read more

Before our move I wanted to dine here since it's known to be such an establishment in the area. It's a short drive from our house and I looked forward to dinner after the last day of school. My husband told me it's been under new management and instead of a steakhouse it's now Mexican food. That night I was craving Mexican so we set out for a family night out. We arrived with no reservation on a Thursday and was seated right away (2 adults 2 kids) inside the main dining area. The ambiance was warm and welcoming and everyone was very kind. Our waitress showed up immediately to take our drink and food orders. I had their happy hour house margarita and it was okay. I ordered their Four Amigos which is their sampling of tacos. I was a little surprised they were such large tacos and 1 street taco (shrimp, fish, and beef). I also didn't expect the amount of cheese that's on everything. I get "Tex-Mex" but this place didn't advertise themselves as such so it was a little bit of a turnoff. However, I did scrape the filling of each taco and found each to be delicious. A shame it was hiding under the cheese. The tortilla itself was also very good. My husband got the Grey Moss Sampler and seemed to enjoy it. He just said it lacked salt. My kids got different kids meals: cheese quesadilla with beans and rice and chicken tenders with fries. Again, the amount of cheese is overwhelming on the quesadilla and there's so much grease on the rice. All of which lacked in seasoning/salt. The chicken tenders were straightforward but sprinkled with salt, so that had the opposite effect- they were good, just too salty. Overall, we had a good dining experience. I suppose with a "Cocina" I was expecting a little more in regards to the food quality - but it wasn't bad. Just on par with what you'd get at El Chaparral down the street. I'm glad we went and I look forward to how this restaurant will continue to grow! read more

Food and drink is always pretty good id say above average. But during Mother's Day it took us 30 minutes to get sat which is pretty normal so no complaints but we sat 30 minutes past time. Then the food took about 2 hours to come out. Which honestly no worries we're celebrating and just relaxing but mind you 2:30 hrs has passed and we barely got food. But here's the kicker we order dessert and dessert drinks then we pay and right after paying the bill. They kick us out mind you this is 2:45 hrs after our reservation time. The manager tells us we have been here for 3 hours. Which 1. Isn't true but 2. We would've never stayed 3 hours if the food didn't take 2:30 hrs so it feels crappy to be kicked out almost immediately after finishing. Saddest plate of pancakes ever. My family went to go eat at this restaurant, and brought back a to-go order of pancakes. They forgot the put the bacon in the meal, and the fruit added to the plate was just 4 small blueberries and half a strawberry.. really?? Plus you see the raspberry sauce in the back, looks like they barely added any. Went to this for place for first time! I ordered the flautas. Menu clearly states they are fried in a corn tortilla. I didn't eat much initially but took food to go because I ate chips and salsa.
