This is a favorite of mine to come too. The main selection is diverse, food is always served. Hot, fresh ingredients are noted. Drinks are also numerous and vary but always have a great taste. Isella and Tony are excellent waitress and waiter, but all the servers are good in our attentive, always refilling drinks and making sure orders are correct and delivered fresh and hot. We just experienced a loss in our family and it was my wife's first time out of the house since this happened. Mia's is nothing fancy and certainly nothing unique in a city known globally for Tex-Mex, but I've yet to find a place in San Antonio that beats their breakfast tacos. Go here for breakfast tacos (they're available all day) and thank me later! My go-to favorites are the choriquiles, "El Rey," and the barbacoa. Mia's "hecho a mano" flour tortillas are large, pillowy, diaphanous discs of beauty. No self-respecting Mexican restaurant would use store-bought tortillas, and Mia's is no different. I've been known to ask for extra tortillas on the side along with a side of butter. It's a very Mexican thing to do, apparently, as explained by my server. A Mexican-American friend/coworker once described me as an "inverted coconut" (white on the outside, brown in the middle) due to my love for the authentic stuff, tortillas and butter included! If you ask your server for tortillas and butter, chances are she will smile and give them to you for free! I struggle to think of a breakfast item more Tex-Mex in spirit than the choriquiles taco: a generous portion of eggs scrambled with cheddar cheese, crispy corn tortilla strips, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes and Mexican chorizo. The corn tortilla strips retain their crispiness, the red grease from the chorizo functions as a savory seasoning, and the acid from the tomatoes cuts through the richness. One of these bad boys would satiate a modest appetite, but I'm anything but modest. The "El Rey" taco is an even bigger beast, consisting of homemade carne guisada, refried beans, shredded cheese, and a strip of bacon. As with the choriquiles taco, the devil is in the details. The components of this taco create an alchemical reaction in my mouth. That's a good thing in case you were wondering. The guisada (essentially Mexican pot roast) is tender and flavorful, the refried beans taste of lard (yes!), and the crispy strip of bacon adds yet another layer of flavor. Pro tip: sit by yourself in the corner so you can lick the gravy off your fingers without causing a scene. As with most things, I'm picky about barbacoa, so I'm pleased to report that Mia's is the real deal. It's greasy in the most glorious way possible. Lesser establishments often incorporate various offal into their barbacoa (eyes, lips, who knows what else), but Mia's recipe consists of nothing but meat. The corn tortilla is made from scratch, which is not something I'd expect from a restaurant on the far northside of San Antonio. A generous garnish of white onion and chopped cilantro macerated in lime juice cuts through the fat and brings the entire taco together. Yelp's AI algorithm keeps bugging me to mention the "ambiance," but what can I say about a little Tex-Mex joint? Umm...it's festive? Kidding aside, the place is spotless despite the high customer turnover. Mia's even won a coveted Blue Plate Award from the health department several years ago. Look for it near the entrance. Mia's offers plenty of other items, including enchiladas, fajitas, etc., but I believe they should be locally famous for their breakfast tacos. Resist the drive-thru and eat the tacos as they were meant to be enjoyed: served fresh right to your table. read more

We were in an out in about an hour, service was good, even though you could tell it was busier than normal. The queso tastes like velveeta and rotel tomatoes for $9 for a condiment size cup. The cheese enchiladas tasted just a bit better than tv dinner enchiladas. The tortillas were delicious! Looking for a new breakfast spot since we are new to the area. At Mia's on Bandera, around 10 AM, the parking sucks. What does that mean folks? That means we had a hard time finding a spot, but that also usually means the place is usually pretty good. After a space opened up, we waited 10 min and we were quickly seated. Chips are crappy, they are not made in house, but the red salsa was good. I had the Chilaquiles plate and my wife had the Huevos Rancheros plate. The coffee was just ok, I've had better, they need to work on this. My chilaquiles were plain, not much added, just the sauce, chopped tortillas, cheese & egg. IMO, the sauce was not spicy enough. The beans and papas were very good although I prefer the papas cooked a little more. I loved that the papas were chopped small. The tortillas here are very good. My wife had no complaints on her huevos rancheros plate. They also brought me a green salsa which was excellent. Service was excellent, ambience was decent and our overall experience was good. If you would like some decent Tex-Mex food, good service and excellent flour tortillas & salsas, this place fits the bill nicely. We will be coming here again sometime soon! read more

I don't eat cheese; but, I love nachos. I thought I found a restaurant that could make my nachos without cheese and still be good. Yesterday, I ordered bean and cheese nachos, WITHOUT cheese. I asked the server to put lettuce and tomatoes on them. I've ordered this from Mia's before and it was done great! This time, the guy charged me $1.99 for lettuce and tomatoes (a second guy confirmed this, in spite of my complaint that I'm not getting cheese; it costs more than lettuce and tomatoes). He insisted lettuce and tomatoes don't come with nachos. I gave up; they then wasted two plastic containers to put the l&t in--not ON the nachos. In the end, I paid $15 for some sad, soggy, cold nachos. I don't like to stereotype but, the women taking orders get it right; they did it twice before. It's just common sense. Very poor value. They wanted 20+ dollars for a bowl of plain fideo and a fajita taco. Prices on the website are significantly lower than what they'll charge you once you get to the restaurant. Edit: the owner is mistaken in their response. Their online menu that I'm routed to when visiting their website lists the tortilla soup at $10.50. In restaurant it is $13.50 before tax. That three dollar difference may not seem like much to you but to me it's the difference in whether I'm going to make the effort to visit your restaurant or not. All combos related to the tortilla soup are also higher than listed. You may not realize that you're misleading customers, but you are. Removing a star for the condescending and inaccurate response. Owner could have just taken the opportunity to look into the matter rather than brush it off and assume that I don't know what I'm talking about. read more

Bottom Line Up Front: delicious Mexican food reasonably priced in a clean, inviting environment with attentive, hard-working staff members. We have been to several Mexican restaurants in San Antonio, and most are good but missing one or two pieces of the puzzle. For example, some will have great tamales, but the rice will be off. Some will have great rice, but the refried beans are off. Mia's is good in every aspect! I would compare it to the food you'd get at your Mexican grandmother's house. You will find homemade tortillas, delicious refried beans, and Mexican rice that is not too moist, overcooked, or over-flavored. I had the flautas, and they were so fresh! Chicken and cheese inside melted to perfection, and a side of warm tortillas that I used to eat my refried beans. Dessert was a plate of sopapillas dusted with cinnamon and sugar with honey. I am from New Mexico, and this food was similar to what I would find in Albuquerque. I Almost forgot to mention the salsa! Delicious salsa with a thicker texture than most. Not chunky, just a thicker consistency and without the giant flakes of cilantro...IYKYK. Give it a try if you are near the area, you won't be disappointed. read more

The only thing we had an issue with is not many handicap parking spots so I had to drop her off then park the car and very tight seating inside the restaurant. I had the Asadaquiles (Steak Omelette ver tortilla chips) The flavor of the steak was just ok and the eggs were a bit watery. It featured peppers, tomatoes and onions but not sure they were seasoned at all. The atmosphere was more like a Taco Cabana and not very warm. The service was ok but just quick. I had left a bad review many years ago because of their policy regarding military discounts, but I'm over it now. Bonus that this place happens to be close to where I now live. I had the cheese enchiladas with chili con carne, opted for the charro beans, fresh made corn tortillas, and a house margarita. Everything was delicious and the service was great! The sauce was a little more spicy than I like, but they were still good. They have daily specials and on Monday and Wednesday they have cheese enchiladas for $5!
