"Can I get something started for you?" Avoid that familiar…read morephrase from the corporate coffee giant and step into the whale. Wonderful single origin coffees available -pour over style as well as a variety of various espresso drinks, and tea. In the back is the master roaster machinery, and a nice lounge with pinball machines to hang out in and create conversation with other patrons. The staff is real knowledgeable and real personable and frequently make me laugh, and they know their product very well and will share information with the consumer. It's OK to ask a question and they won't yell at you if you want cream in your coffee. They do keep it behind the counter in the refrigerator, by request only. For some reason, coffee always taste better to me on site than at home. Maybe it's the temperature of the water, maybe it's just the ambience and the brief conversation? I don't know but I prefer to have my cup outside of the home. I'm a rather social being. The owner has a knack for hiring, competent, talented and friendly staff! Truly the BEST coffee anywhere, seriously...... maybe that's why they won so many awards?! Beans are available daily and frequently with half-price sale on your second bag. A great gift to send somebody in a different city, throw in a T-shirt or other swag while you're at it. I found that relatives and friends really dig stuff from the Bay Area. There are a variety of "at home barista"accoutrements available for sale to include the lovely Chemex glass coffee maker. Grinders, scales, etc. A coffee paraphernalia shop- "legal speed". Check out the pastry case with some local favorite bakeries representing. In closing, five stars throughout*****! Now get over there, I hope I got something started for you......

This was my first visit to Red Whale Coffee, and I was really looking forward to it. I loved the…read moreatmosphere, especially the pinball machines, and I was excited to recommend this place to my friends. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. I ordered an iced mocha with oat milk during a busy time and waited about 20-30 minutes. While I was waiting, I noticed several customers who ordered after me received their drinks. I went up to the counter to ask about my order, and the cashier seemed confused. The barista remembered making my drink and believed someone may have accidentally taken it since there had been a drink sitting on the pickup counter for a while. The barista told me he would remake my drink and even offered the drink to another customer instead of discarding it. However, he continued making other orders before remaking mine. Just as I was about to ask for a refund, I finally received my coffee. I understand that mistakes happen, especially during busy periods, but better communication and order tracking would have made a big difference. Unfortunately, my first experience left a bad impression. As much as I liked the atmosphere, I won't be returning, and I can't recommend this coffee shop based on the service I received.

A friend told me Comforts had the best Chinese chicken salad around, so I made the 15-minute trek…read moreinland from Highway 101 to find out -- and I'm so glad I did. Comforts sits right in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, with a small parking lot next door (very handy). We opted to skip the sit-down café and grabbed a to-go salad from the marketplace instead. The small size is $10, which feels reasonable until you look around and realize everything else in that to-go area is... let's just say Whole Foods looks like a bargain by comparison. This is premium Marin pricing, full stop. But back to the salad -- it absolutely lived up to the hype. All the components were fresh and crisp, but the real star is the sesame-ginger vinaigrette: savory, sweet, and tangy all at once. Add in the satisfying crunch of peanuts, and it's the kind of salad that makes you understand why people drive out of their way for it. Comforts has been a Marin institution since 1986, and one bite of this salad tells you exactly why. Just go in with eyes open on the prices -- and maybe don't browse the marketplace too long if you're on a budget.

Decided to grab breakfast with my son. Such a disappointment. I request tea with milk and it arrived without milk. I had to ask twice before the milk was delivered. The food came with no silverware - literally no way to eat! Again, we had to ask two servers and wait while they took checks to other patrons before giving us the silverware. All the while I had to watch the entitled of Marin demonstrate their ignorance and poor treatment of others (including people literally walking into the store and not holding the door for a pregnant mother with a stroller). From the (lack of) service to the entitlement the experience was awful. Don't waste your time.

No frills No thrills…read moreStraight up good bagels at a fraction of the price they could be! Only $3.50 for a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese! The scene is very '70s hippie like with bad art indiscriminately placed with no sense of aesthetic. A bit of a cleanup is in order and a little more attention to detail could spruce it up. But, there certainly is charm in its current state. Simply a great product at a low price point and fast, friendly service. Get your coffee next-door to avoid the air pot pump offerings here. (normally cold or nasty in those air pump things) This is strictly bagels- no need to push the caffeine despite the revenue loss. Just 30+ years of an honest bagel shop focusing on the BAGEL! A lot of variety for only 20$ a dozen. Grab a bag or two and take them to your workmates or your family. A solid satisfying chewy treat! And it can't be beat......

Aside from that, the bagel itself had a nice fluffy, slightly chewy texture that I really liked!
