If you're rolling into Traverse City around lunch time on a Saturday, just go straight to 7 Monks to get your weekend properly started. We got there around 1pm and it was packed, but comfortable. We snagged the last available table and appreciated the good selection of beer and cider. Service was friendly and fast too. Which was good since we were starving. Fried pickles and cheese curds were fresh and not at all greasy. I always appreciate when a kitchen knows how to handle their frying oil. We split the fried apps and a karaage rice bowl for a fine lunch to launch us into the rest of the weekend. I would totally go back to this place. read more

Solidly meh. The beer selection feels completely haphazard, with no real point of view or logic behind it. Worse, a lot of the beers on the list are just not good. Dinner was equally uneven. The fried pickles and cheese curds were solid for what they are, and probably the best part of the meal. Unfortunately, the chicken shawarma was awful. It tasted like someone dumped sumac on it and called it a day. That was basically the entire flavor profile: sumac, sumac, and more sumac. I genuinely would not serve that dish to someone I disliked, let alone a paying customer. Overall, there are a few decent fried bar snacks here, but not enough to make up for the bad beer list and the terrible entrée. I'd avoid it. read more

Typical bar & grill atmosphere at 7Monks. We tried 2 of their drinks and were not overly impressed as non-drinkers. Though it was very busy, we did not have to wait for a table. The food, however, took a bit longer than we would've liked. The service was okay. The smash burgers were good, but my boyfriend noted had an extreme amount of pickles! read more

Although this isn't technically a brewery, it kinda feels like one.it is a tap room with not a huge menu, but enough variety to please anyone who enters. I've been here a couple times now while visiting TC for work, and I'd come back. Service was great, and food and beer is good. What more do you need? The interior is kinda dark but bright enough to see who you are talking to. I'd come back again. read more

An interesting place for sure. We found it by scanning the yelp pages for Traverse City. They had a good selection of beers from around Michigan and I asked to taste a couple and they brought two to my table that I sampled and picked one.. We ordered off the menu and the server had a few suggestions for us. I ordered the shaved beef with Gruyère cheese. It was served with Great Lakes potato chips, which are delicious and the sandwich was delicious but there was very very little cheese. It came with an ajus style dipping sauce, which was fine. My friend ordered the grilled cheese with the bacon on the side and it was served with crispy french fries. The sandwich was all right. It was a mix of cheese and they had yellow tomatoes on the cheese sandwich, which weren't really ripe or tasty at all. she had a glass of wine to drink with her her lunch and I had a beer, but nobody came back by to refill our drinks until we were done with our dinners so we didn't order a second. We saw the good reviews on Yelp and decided to give this place a try on our second night in Traverse City. It wasn't too crowded on a Tuesday so we grabbed a table in the bar area. One of the bartenders came over and brought us some waters and menus. We perused the menu and ordered a couple beers - there is alot to chose from. Both were very good. For dinner my wife ordered the beet salad which she liked a lot and I got the fried chicken sandwich which was just OK. It was a bit dry and I asked for some more aioli sauce to go on it. Overall it was decent but I've had better. The staff here was super friendly and helpful. So that was a big plus since the food experience was mixed. read more

Nate and I are regulars at the 7 Monks Taproom in Grand Rapids, so we were excited to check out the location in TC while visiting recently. We walked right in and sat at the bar. They have a lot of beer on tap as well as several cocktails. The food menu is different than the GR location, with a little bit nicer options (although they don't have my favorite ever chicken Caesar salad wrap). We were just grabbing a couple drinks, so I got a strawberry cocktail with vodka that was very strong, and Nate got a beer ($1 off since he is a Monk Club member and your membership is good at either location). The bartenders helping us out were all really nice. The space isn't as cool as the GR location, but I'd come back and try some of the food! read more

Doner Kebab with the sweet potato fries dipped in the curry mustard aioli. (Sounds crazy but it works too good!) Sat at the bar. Food was awesome. Blue Belle lambic was awesome. Ingredients on the kebab were fresh, clean, and absolutely delicious. Beer menu is outstanding. read more

I visited 7 Monks Taproom in Traverse City, MI, on a Wednesday evening around 7:30 PM. It was moderately busy with most patrons seated in the bar area. I sat at a booth and was almost immediately greeted by a waiter who brought water to the table. Paper menus were already at the table. After a few more minutes my waitress came by the table to take my drink order. I was delighted to be able to order one of my favorite ales, Chimay Grande Reserve Blue - and it was on tap! I ordered the Bacon Jam Burger, medium. It finally came out of the kitchen about 20 or 25 minutes later. The waitress said the cook wanted to make sure it was prepared correctly since I had stressed I did not want a well done patty. Despite efforts, the patty was well done but I was too hungry to send it back. It was fairly tasty despite being overcooked. In the dining room, there were many TVs elevated well above people's heads and several could be watched from my location. It was a little too noisy to carry on a conversation across the table. I would have given five stars if the cook had a little better judgement. But I would go back if I lived in Traverse City, if only to enjoy my favorite ale. read more

This is a great home-grown watering hole, with a great vibe. We experienced friendly and fast service! I'd stay away from the "Asian-inspired" food though. The chef makes the common mistake of putting TEN TIMES the amount of ginger to a dish in order label it "Asian cuisine" -- as a result the Chicken Karaage and Hawaiian rice bowl are inedible (unless you love eating ginger straight no chaser). The other things are good though. read more

This is a great, fun bar with yummy bar food. Split the bacon jam burger and doner kebab and both were delicious! The beer list is massive too so plenty of options for everyone, including wines, ciders, and cocktails for non-beer drinkers. read more

We arrived in Traverse City later than we planned and were scrambling to find a restaurant before it got too late. This one was open with no wait so we were quickly able to grab a table and start looking at the menu. The drinks came quickly but unfortunately everything else took quite a while. While the food was good the service was sadly lacking in both speed and follow up. Overall it was ok, but next time I think I'll look elsewhere. read more

Monday night not much going on in Traverse City but I found this place and it's the best fried perch I've ever had, not that I have ever had fried perch but this was so fresh, tasty and unlike most bar food lightly breaded vs so heavily coated and fried. Delicious!!! Loved Brian the bartender, he had a great knowledge of bourbon and made me the perfect old fashioned. I will definitely be back!!! read more

The burger here is really good and I love the fries. I also got the margarita, but you have to ask for a salt rim. Every time I've been here the service has been really good and the food comes out quickly. There's also a lot of seating available and it's great for bigger groups. read more

Food was just so-so but the service and ambiance was nice. The chicken fingers were overcooked and burnt. The Brussels sprouts had no sauces so we asked for ranch. Visiting a friend in Elk Rapids and stopped here dinner after being picked up from the airport. When we walked in, the bar tender greeted us right away and made us feel welcomed. The waitress was also friendly and nice and the food tasted fantastic! We started out with their brussel sprouts and you can't go wrong with ordering that. I had the beet salad and my husband and our friend got the burger. They also raved about their food and my salad tasted great as well! Love coming to 7 monks taproom whenever I come to traverse city! You seat yourself in an open seat or at the bar area. They have lots of different beers on tap so I recommend trying one! I got the smash burger and it was delicious and fries were crispy. My dad got the bacon jam burger and said it was better than the smash burger so I will try it next time! This review was just based on the food and service not the beer. Came in to the restaurant with a family of 5 to grab an early lunch before hitting the road and we were happily surprised. The service was really friendly (both server and bartender). They had just opened for the day and we were the 2nd or 3rd customers. We ordered a few juicy burgers, chicken sandwiches, and Mac and cheese. Everything was awesome! Crispy shoe string fries were perfect. Place did smell like a few beers had spilled on the floor the night before but our table and area were very clean. I would recommend, next time I would come back without the kids to try some of the beer selection. read more

Let me just start by .... THE BURGERS ARE AMAZING AND THE FRIES!!!! This is a super low lit, cozy, very good music, and chill bar to get some amazing food and drinks at. The bartenders were super accommodating and great to get you whatever you wanted. They made sure you had water and always had a beer in hand. We stopped in for a quick meal and to get out of the rain. The decor was very cool - consisting of all of their old taps displayed up and down the walls. I wasn't a huge fan of having to go to the counter to order and the bartender was visibly annoyed when we didn't order any drinks beside water (yes, I know it's a taproom, yes, I usually order drinks, but we were just THIRSTY and wanted water. My husband ordered their famous smashburgers and loved it. Said it wasn't greasy, just was flavorful and tasty. I ordered the gochojang pulled pork bowl and it was incredible! Large pieces of marinated, tender pork, fresh kimchi, cucumber salad, all over tasty sticky rice. TC was good - even my husband said we should try the GR location next! read more

This is a splendid little place. Of course designer beer joints in this city are about as rare as molly ringwold starring in a John Hughes movie in the 80s A very charming tavern interior with beastie boys themed posters which caught my attention. Had a very satisfying burger with fries. Service was attentive there were no issues. It's more of a taproom than a restaurant so don't expect extensive choices. But you will like what you get! read more

Our business opened September 1st, 2011. 7 Monks Taproom is a craft beer bar and gastro pub that has been named one of America's 33 Best Beer Bar's (2015) and a Top 31 Beer Bar's in America (2018) by Thrillist. Also, we were part of Draft Magazine's 100 Best Beer Bars in America during 2014-2016. So service wise I would say great! The beer tasted really good as well and was decently priced. They had a bourbon barrel stout which was pretty good and newly released. The biggest issue we had was with the food. I ordered the spam sandwich with chips and my wife ordered the chicken quesadilla. While the food was cheap, the quality of the food also seems that way too based off what we ordered. The spam sandwich was supposed to be teriyaki flavored, and didn't get any of that. There wasn't a lot of thousand island dressing on it too, which made the sandwich dry. The chips that were served were clearly out of a bag as they were cold, which made it seem like I could have just gotten a bag myself. I would have paid a few dollars extra to get something fresh like fries. While spam comes from a can and I know this, my wife's chicken quesadilla had chicken that was clearly from a can - it was sopping wet, and the meat was very chunky, and very salty. This made us worry the rest of the food may not be very fresh. While we did have that experience, I will say the pretzel bites were really good and did seem fresh, and they were sourdough! So that was nice. I think this place has very good beer, and a really cool bar setup with a nice stage, arcade machines, and much more. However, I wouldn't come back here for lunch. Instead, I would make food at home. I would highly recommend more fresher options, and I would pay a little more for better quality food.

Since they allow dogs, we walked down there and had dinner. We only had a few minute wait so they could set up our table and then we were seated. You order at the counter so we got an order of spinach dip and the one of their flatbread pizzas. The pizza was good! Service was a little slow but it was a Saturday night. Unfortunately we never got our spinach dip. A girl came around and said it was sent out and then given to another table. They also said they'd refund it but I've still yet to see a refund on my credit card. I even asked the bartenders about it and they said they'd take care of it but still nothing. So I guess I'm out the money. I'd recommend d the place but their wait staff seems a bit chaotic and frazzled so I guess just be prepared for that.

Apparently the brewery used to be a family video store, but the brewery was built about seven years ago. They have a super nice patio with a cool fire pit (I went inside due to a lot of rain), a food truck was also at the premises (but I did not order from them). I was greeted right away by the bartender and we discussed a few beers I might like. I ended up ordering a Marzen style (I was told by the bartender it was some of their Oktoberfest that had been fermenting for an additional five months). It was a nice beer, crisp taste with a little more hop profile than what I'm accustomed to in a Marzen. The high top table that I sat at was close to the metal brewing equipment, but had a view of the TV. I enjoyed the music which seemed to be a little bit of everything rock. The second beer I ordered was Schwarzbier, a style that I don't order very often. That beer had a darker color to it, but was really well done with a great profile and caramel notes on aftertaste. I liked it a little bit more than my first beer. If you're looking for a place to try some new beers, I would recommend silver spruce. They aren't trying to do a ton of everything (lots of food or multiple beer choices), but what they are doing is providing a cool place to have a good beer.

The server did recommend that we share several dishes as a table as they are small plates. We ordered the bread and the three vegetable appetizers to start. Here is where it is hard to review: all of the appetizers were fantastic, interesting and fresh preparations. From the light courses section, we had the bougie corn dog and the duck pasta. I'm not a fan of corn dogs, I thought it was fine, but pretentious and not worth ordering, others liked it. I did like the duck pasta. The mushroom tart was boring, dry, and forgettable (side note that if you are in Detroit, Le Supreme's is absolutely fantastic, so this can be memorable). The other stand out was the walleye main, their use of curry made it an interesting, as well as delicious, dish. We all thought the halibut was awful, it arrived with a fishy smell, but was then somehow flavorless. If we were not all splitting it, it would be a send back dish. Overall, the dishes ranged from flavorful and interesting, to terrible. No member of our group felt they would return, and I would recommend against it due to the noise level, it really was that bad. Every sound echoed off of every hard surface. As a result, it just was not an enjoyable experience.
