Came for dinner last night after hearing rave reviews from friends in the area. The burgers were delicious, but that is where the positives end. The service was painfully slow; the young woman waiting on our table was stretched way too thin. It took about 15 min to order drinks and another 15 before they came. We ordered fries to share and burgers, subbing side salads since it sounded delish. Fries came out lightning fast but the portion was TINY for $10 - we had to flag down our waitress to order a second round of drinks (which she didn't even stop to ask if we wanted the same or not, just sprinted away and put them in); when she returned with this round we ordered more fries (accepting we would end up paying $30 for fries...absurd). Burgers came out; as mentioned before these were delish -6oz is a great size and bun was quality. Side salad portion was pathetic. About 6 lettuce pieces with a few toppings sprinkled on. After finishing, we again flagged down the waitress as she blew past and asked for the check. We got the bill and were appalled. For the drinks (vodka with a splash of cranberry; tequila with soda and a splash of lemonade; scotch on the rocks; all served in small cocktail glasses) not only were we charged for the alcohol - but also the mixers as if they were full sized glasses of cranberry and lemonade instead of a 1oz or less splash. Even more ridiculous was being charged for ICE (yes, you read correctly - ICE) in the scotch. Round that out with side salads being priced $1.50 over what was listed on the menu and we concluded we will never be back nor recommend. read more

Such a hidden gem! We randomly stumbled upon this restaurant on our way back from Northport, and so glad we did. Some of the BEST food we had our entire trip to TC. My husbands pizza was amazing! The white fish dip was delicious! And my burger.. honestly, one of the best I've ever had. Hands down. Friendly service. And love the fact it's an old school house- has a great old charm to it. Read the good reviews so came for burgers and pizza. Not impressed with either unfortunately. The hostess and waitstaff were friendly so that's a plus. Outdoor dining was just some white folding chairs and rented type tables. We chose to sit inside which had a cool schoolhouse type atmosphere. My husband and I each ordered our own small pizza since we like different toppings and the crunch of a Detroit style small 4 corner pizza. Our pizzas arrived and his looked as expected through sadly only a couple pieces of meat on the short rib pizza. My Greek pizza was not the expected 4 corner pizza-it was like they made it in a larger pan then just cut it in half for someone else in the restaurant? Or themselves? Hey broomstick, 4 pieces of pizza is not the same thing as a small Detroit pizza. This isn't a pizza buffet. It also tasted strongly of garlic and salt piles in places ( not the feta areas) and most frustrating no tomato sauce which I'm certain wasn't mentioned on the menu. Our son ordered a wolverine burger. It was described as having avacado and bacon on it, I couldn't see any and he didn't remember tasting it. Also, Be careful, the burgers come with chips. They will ask you if you want fries with that and suddenly your $18 burger is $23. This was not communicated by the server. Add tax, a pint of $9 beer and tip to that and you just had a forty dollar mediocre burger. What?!?! Can't say we'd be back. I'll start with the good. The Broomstack Kitchen & Pub is located in an old schoolhouse that has been renovated. The space is the coolest part. Plus there is a curling rink which I could imagine is pretty cool in the winter. As for the food, it was unimpressive and really overpriced for the quality. Started with Brussels sprouts and bacon, which sounds good but these were chopped finely prior to roasting and it was like eating corn flakes without milk. We had a burger, which boasts on of the best around. If this is true, don't expect much from burgers in the area. Also ordered the pulled pork sandwich, this was not fresh. Lastly, our server suggested the homemade brownie for dessert and we decided to take it to go. Not impressed with the portion or quality. Check out the photo, the small brownie was $10. I wouldn't hesitate it it was delicious or even slightly larger. Not impressed with the food, however our server was friendly. Great service and friendly regulars! The food was AMAZING as well! The prices are still pretty steep for this type of pub food, and that as well as the server not warning us about up charges is why I'm not giving it five stars. I got the sweet and spicy burger, and my fiancée got the spartan burger! Both were amazing, but his was absolutely incredible! I subbed a side salad for the chips, and the salad was delicious. Staying in Empire, we found this restaurant online and it looked good, so we called and they were able to seat 9 for dinner. It's always interesting going to a restaurant that has different kinds of foods and pop - all the pop here appears to be created locally and the Black Cherry Cream was really good, I had to have a refill. Two of the ladies and two of the guys had Brussels sprouts, with or without bacon (you can guess which had bacon) and they all loved it. The pizza was HUGE and according to those who tried it, really good, and a couple enjoyed the underground cheesecake. Erin showed me the curling arena, who knew one could curl in a restaurant? And they certainly are Detroit Tigers fans! All in all, a fun dinner with good food and service. read more

I came by in the off-season for a quick bite after a bike ride. Super welcoming people, great venue, great beer selection. I would come here again and again... had the burger... great tasting, fresh toppings. My only wish would be that the party was a little thicker. This is a nice place to go out if you're looking for someplace in this part of Leelanau. Delicious dinner after a hike at Sleeping Bear Dunes! Really friendly waitstaff and a pleasant experience. We shared the truffle fries as an appetizer (they were hot and amazing...my only complaint is that there weren't more of them!), my husband got the cowboy burger and I got a personal (6") veggie pizza. He said the burger was delicious (albeit messy) and it came with a side of crunchy kettle chips. The pizza was SO GOOD. I am usually not crazy about pizza at pubs but this pie was the exception to the rule. Thick crust with crunchy edges and soft in the middle, with crisp veggies on top ...perfection. Hand down one of the best burger, pizza, and sandwich shops in Northern Michigan. I know you can easily get sick of burgers and pizza up north cause that's the primary staple everywhere with little variety but this is out of this world good. I usually order the mushroom burger with truffle fries. My kids love the deep dish style pizza that they still eat cold the next day. My husband got the Cuban sandwich the last time which he said was amazing too. The owner/manager that works behind the bar is super friendly and gave our family a tour once. It was my 50th bday yesterday and my husband had no idea to celebrate with me and our four kiddos (12,14,17,20). I looked online for a taproom with food that was not somewhere we'd eaten yet. We've been eating in Traverse City for thirteen years and have almost been everywhere! I found a review for Broomstack online and called. I cannot express how kind and enthusiastic the manager was about hosting us for my bday! That was a good indicator of the evening! I'm a very good home cook and have even had food articles published (PJ Media, Liberty Island Magazine) on food and regional cuisine. I have eaten on several continents and nearly every hard to get table in TC, not to mention driving to Chicago to hit up a Michelin Starred restaurant (Galit!), just for thrills! To begin, I ordered three of their desserts for us to share. LEMON CAKE! Holy crap, that was a great surprise! Choc bread pudding was also a win. BUT THE LEMON CAKE! DANG! Delicious!!! Individual apple tart was also very well done and the fact that our lovely server brought it out with a lit candle without even asking was so thoughtful. Apples were perfectly baked inside a delicious, not-too-sweet crust with some streusel on top and really nicely done vanilla ice cream. Thank you!!!! The ribs were very well done with a nice, sweet and very tomato-y flavor. Meaty and easy to eat. Fries were good too, as was the slaw. My ribs came with mac and cheese, which I did not get to try because my sons stole it right off my plate. It was homemade and smelled delicious though! Burgers were solid, and pricing was on par with TC. Coffee was good but a little tepid. Presentation of my fella's tacos could have been more inspiring but he cleaned his plate so they were indeed, tasty. But all in all a good meal and the smiles and eager service really made my day feel special. The place was spacious, airy, light, and bright. We all loved that it was a former schoolhouse. Our server was so attentive, patient with the kiddos and made changes we asked for with no problem whatsoever. Well Done and Thank you! Broomstacks was one of the best lunch spots we have been to in the Leelanau Peninsula. It came highly recommended by a local. They have an expansive menu with tons of food options and beer selections. We enjoyed the crispy Brussels sprouts, homemade guacamole and chips, short rib pizza with caramelized onions, chunks of garlic drizzled with horseradish cream and Cuban sandwich. What a fun evening with great food, made even better by our nice company and the business staff. So, there are two sides to this place. One side is a restaurant with great bar foods. The other is a curling rink with a "warming room" that includes table service and a fun time watching the curling match. It's not a huge place so everyone is super friendly and helpful. Lots of local beer on tap plus others in cans/bottles. Local distilled spirits make great cocktails and drinks. I started off with their version of a French 75, sparking wine, local gin, and lemon. So good I had to have a second. Mark found an IPA that he liked. Now the food. The table shared the Brussels Sprouts and bacon - even I liked them - and the Whitefish Pate. Great. Then I had the pork belly sandwich, Mark had the Cubano (not technically a Cuban Sandwich, but it looked good), Mary had the beet salad, and Dave shared an "Animal" pizza with his dad. Word to the wise - the small is big enough for two. Dave and Mary will be eating leftover pizza for a while. Mark and I shared one slice of it for a taste and Mark thinks it might be the best pizza he has ever had. Everyone raved about the food. The desserts looked tempting, but we were too full. While 2 stars ("Meh. I've experienced better") seems harsh - it is accurate - and the 3-stars "a-ok" doesn't fit, I'm going with the 3 as giving only 2 seems too brutal. This place turned out to be disappointing. But first, the good: the building. It's an old schoolhouse turned bar/restaurant themed in old-classroom decor along with pics of early (1950's ?) class students. Very beautiful. It's also a facility to learn and play (does one "play"?!) curling. The curling section is also very-well done. They offer outdoor seating - although I'm guessing a result of Covid and not something that's been a long-standing staple. Also good is the selection of local craft beer, wine, and soda (Northwoods soda is AWESOME). Those whom we encountered working were friendly. The couple of disappointments were in our service and in our pizza. Working in the service industry (also in a facility with a wide-selection of craft beer and wine offerings), I always offer a sample to those vacillating between a couple of items. Thus, I would have appreciated not having to ask to sample. I didn't. I banked on the endorsement of one of my selections. Also, I'm attentive. I would have inquired about the barely consumed beverage. Not only early, but period. I would have appreciated the same having been done for me. It wasn't. Thus, while we didn't mind paying for the barely consumed beverage, it just contributed to the overall experience being disappointing and leaving a poor taste in my mouth. No pun intended. The pizza. The portions were good, the prices reasonable. The sauce had a good flavor and was also plentiful. The pepperoni was also flavorful and plentiful (and had it been cooked in that way that causes it to sort of curl up around the edges - mmmMMmmmm!). However, the crust wasn't anything to write home about - really kind of bland, no buttery flavored goodness; no crisp air-pockets... and the cheese was equally not impressive - no significantly noticeable flavors of parmesan, mozzarella, provolone... feta, roquefort swiss... We both thought the pizza would have benefitted from a bit longer in the pizza oven, although as I write I'm not sure how that would improve the taste of the crust and/or cheese. Guess it wouldn't. But that pepperoni tho... Overall, Broomstack is a nice little place with friendly people, it just didn't do it for us. read more

A diamond in the rough. And not so much rough, more just a drought. Eatin' is sparse around here, but that doesn't stop Broomstack from being a top notch stop. We both had juicy, mouth watering burgers in a very socially distanced outdoor dining setup. Our waitress was especially pleasant, and a bartender who served me later was very helpful in finding a perfect bottle of wine to purchase to take back to our Airbnb. The absolute best customer service you could ever ask for! We had been in the car for about 8 hours driving and they were so welcoming and the food was excellent.
