Alright Yelp, you brought me here.. You besta not fail me now.. I'm a bride-to-be and I've booked Melissa to do my hair on my big day. Today was the consultation and it was pretty fun and easy!! She's very easy to talk to and seems pretty ding dong confident about her skills. Plus, she was willing to work around my the budget my bridesmaids were comfortable with (major kudos!!). Tiffany, who was working the front was so friendly and nice. I tell ya, you can sell me alone on customer service!! They were all very accommodating (props to whoever hired them because customer service is SO important to me and is a major make it or break it thing for me) and those couches, ARE SO SOFT!! I'd fall asleep in them if I worked there. Haha. Anyhoo, I'll come back with an update in July after my wedding to let everybody and their mamas know how all of our hair went for the wedding. Love this place and love Megs! My hair has been to many a salon and in the hands of many stylists--the good and the bad. Though I never arrive super set on a particular color or style, I am pretty nit picky when it comes to a job well done. Hey, if you're going to pay the $$$ you should reap the benefits. A friend recommended the salon to me awhile back and I immediately booked an appointment upon my return home from a 2 year stint in Nashville where I had been spoiled by the most amazing salon I've ever set foot in. The receptionist at Seven Salon put me with Megs and, because I hadn't seen many reviews on her, I was a little nervous. Let it be said that those nerves were completely eased when I met her. She was so friendly and really took the time to examine my face shape, the texture of my hair and how it falls, as well as the color. Two and a half hours later Meg had completely rocked my mane! I'll easily admit that it is one of the best cut and color jobs I have ever had. Sure, the cost is not easy on the wallet but the end result is well worth what you pay! I love my new look and better yet I get compliments everywhere I go. The only thing I wish they had was a private parking lot. You can easily spend over 2 hours in the chair and worrying about the meter running out detracts from the relaxing experience. read more

Ever since moving to Oakland from San Francisco 2 years ago I've been on the hunt for a good stylist I can go to regularly. After reading the glowing reviews, I scheduled an appointment with Michelle. First off, the interior of the salon is lovely. The hair dryers for each station are suspended on bunjees from the ceiling which is not only practical, but very cool looking. The massage chairs at the sink are awesome too (and way better than any nail salon massage chair). Michelle was absolutely great. She did a beautiful job on my hair, listened to what I wanted and gave me that exactly. She was also a complete doll. Very sweet and personable, but was also fine not chit chatting and just letting me escape into the world of trashy magazines. I think I've finally found my forever stylist. read more

This is the first time I have ever written a review of a business online because I try not to so as to help local businesses. I would recommend you support another local business. I had called a month prior to my appointment to arrange a simple female haircut and knowing that pricing varies by stylist I had emphasized that I would like to be paired with a more affordable one (around $83). I received a call the day of the cut and found out I had actually been assigned one of the owners/someone on the expensive end of the spectrum ($150). When I pointed out that I found this pretty disappointing given my request 1 month ago, the person on the other end of the phone reacted in a very patronizing, arrogant and aloof manner. This I found to be unacceptable -- the assignment error is not the main reason for the 1-star review. It was the level of patronization and arrogance that truly made me feel like I did not want to return here for pampering. If you care about supporting local business, I would suggest taking your business elsewhere. Interestingly, I found at least one other negative review on here that is also essentially pointing out the cheeky and arrogant approach of the salon. Time to realize this is a service sector profession. read more

Thanks to Yelp's and particularly Zoey R's review(s) of Seven, I found Katya at Seven Salon. Chose Katya over Michelle b/c of Katya's Vidal Sassoon training and was happy with the results (contrary to food, I do have high expectations when it comes to hair). Staff: Excellent. Within 24 hours of my email, I had a phone call from Maricell (who recommended Katya). Note: I always chat up the receptionist for her/his opinion, as s/he sees the type of cuts & clients for each stylist. Maricell brought me tea in a tray with matching service. Elegant. Khleber (who is incredibly friendly & considerate) kept my glass of Pellegrino full in the waiting area. Maricell was also thoughtful in recommending certain streets sans meters to park on--Manila, Hudson & James. Be sure to read street cleaning signs. Clientele: varied in age/sex/mode of dress. Decor: dark wood & modern. Bathroom: clean with an enormous, square shallow sink that was purchased for aesthetics rather than usefulness. Stylist/colorist: Katya V. She is Russian and has gorgeous, long lashed eyes and striking eyeglasses. She has been doing hair for 17 years (since she was 19). Loves Muy Thai Kickboxing (she competes). K is the first colorist who did NOT stain my temples (she is very careful). Color end result: rich, dark brown--uniform all over. Covered my grey very well. Exactly what I was looking for since I ceased blonde highlights 2008. Katya, maintained the length of my hair (only cutting 3" off) and gave me sophisticated, flattering layers that frame my face. She cut my hair while I was sitting AND standing. After my blowout done by her assistant Jen, Katya performed a final review and cutting. Noticed the best stylists do this. In response to my being uncertain about the longest layer being rounded or narrowed, K wisely advised me to wait and see for a week, when I would have had a chance to observe my hair's behavior. If I decided on a more rounded bottom edge, I could pop by the salon and she'd do more cutting, for no extra charge. Conversing with K was a pleasure. Genuinely liked her. Katya's assistant: Jen. Tall, smiling countenance. I was slightly dismayed at being handed off to an assistant for the blowout. My hair took a full 4 hours (it would have been 5 with highlights) and Katya had only booked me for 3, so she had a client come in at the 4th hour. Jen was fine with a curling brush. Results were good though not spectacular...example, movie star ready for lunch with her best friends as opposed to awards night. I did appreciate Jen's enthusiasm and careful sectioning and drying of my hair. She also gave me more volume on top via minimal teasing. Tipped her much more than I usually tip assistants. Massage Chairs: Look like normal chairs. Massaging mechanism feels good. Wish it would go down further to my tailbone (and hips). The leg rest could be higher. Since I have neck issues, the sink is usually a painful experience. These chairs made it almost a pleasure. Other: Told Katya during our Tuesday consult that I wanted sealant. K forgot, but I reminded her, so she added it in after cutting. After sealant, K also added a hair mask (unknown if that was routine or something extra she threw in for me). In the hand off from K to Jen, J forgot the instructions. She started to rinse my hair mask off prematurely. I stopped her and asked her to check with K (it was supposed to left on for five minutes). J good naturedly put more hair mask product on my hair and complied with K's instructions. Sealant, by the way, is not normally offered since it costs extra. However, sealant causes the color to last longer and gives hair that extra shine and softness. I always get sealant since I get my hair done every 10 to 12 months. The color used is Loreal Professional, versus other color lines, so I can not wash my hair for two days. Lastly, K had to smooth down the curls post blow out in order to see the layers more properly...while I greatly appreciated the final tweaks to my cut, I was a little disappointed that Jen's efforts were thus dampened. Price: $195 ($100 tint; $35 sealant; $60 cut) before tip. Reasonable for five hours and my quantity of hair. Katya also added a hair mask by Shu Uemura after my sealant. Final comment: I walked out with "envy" hair, so I'm satisfied. I will return to Katya again, but next time ask her to book 4 hours for me instead of 3, so she could do my blowout. ******************************* Sat AM: The morning after. Looks good. I can't recommend CJ for a haircut unless you have no opinion about how you want to wear your hair. I went to see CJ about a year ago after losing my haircutter to sudden illness and early retirement. I told him that I liked my haircut and just wanted to maintain it. I told him exactly what I wanted. CJ had his own ideas. He kept cutting bangs that look terrible on me and his haircuts eventually morphed into a Dutch boy bob. The last straw was when he cut 4 inches off my hair without telling me or asking me. Very short hair is unflattering for me because of the shape of my face. I don't doubt that CJ knows how to cut hair. He just doesn't know how to listen or accommodate the wishes of his clients. read more

I hesitate to write this review, in that it might encourage even more people to go to this salon and therefore make it more difficult for me to schedule an appointment. But really, I eat out of Brandon's hands. My last cut and style transformed my hair into a curtain of silk. The man pays such attention to detail, factoring into the cut the way you typically style your hair, what products you use, etc. The salon itself, from my two visits of experience, has always been staffed by very warm (at least on the surface) and hospitable front desk ladies. In short, chic and humbly couture without the airs that one could reasonably associate with such a salon. I wore no make up, flip flops, and track short on my first visit, and no scoffs. Had a good experience today with Cecelia. We had a conversation about what I wanted and helped me figure it out because even I was unsure. In the end I was happy with the results with both my color and cut! She paid attention to detail. I liked the technique she used on my hair and she took her time. I'm very particular. I came here for a hair cut when I first moved to Oakland, and I remember thinking it was decent, but not quite impressive for me to commit to becoming a regular. I've since tried a couple other places around town, but I still haven't found one I am ready to commit to. I thought I would give Seven another chance, so I came here last week for a haircut. Honestly, it was the worst experience I've had getting my hair cut that I can remember. I was running about 10 minutes late for my 6:30pm appointment (due to factors beyond my control, but whatever), so I called and let them know, and the receptionist said as long as I was there by 6:45 I could keep my appointment. Cool, I got there at 6:40. I met the stylist, and explained what I wanted, but I felt like she was impatient with me and didn't really let me finish. Then she got to work. Most stylists I've gone to are friendly and talkative throughout the process, at the very least ask questions like "so, do you live around here?", "what do you do for a living?", etc. She was not friendly at all, and really only talked to me to tell me about how dry my hair was, how much breakage I had, and ask me how often I wash and blow dry it. I felt like, she was so condescending, like she was actually repulsed by my hair. It was unbelievably uncomfortable! Honestly, I have felt more at ease getting a pap smear or getting my teeth cleaned. I feel like going to the salon should always be a pleasant, relaxing experience... ESPECIALLY when you are spending $85 for a service that only takes an hour at most. Also, I noticed that other reviews mention wine and champagne - I wasn't even offered a glass of water. Now, I know what you're thinking - "Yeah yeah yeah, how was the haircut?" Well, leaving the salon I felt ok about it - I really actually wanted to get the hell out of that chair so bad that I didn't look too much at it. After a few days, my verdict is that It is too choppy, and it's not very even. It's not the worst haircut, but it is definitely not worth the price I paid. I've had better haircuts for $35, and I've also had $90 haircuts that were well worth the money. P.S. The two stars are for the first time I came here. read more

I've had virgin black hair for about 10 years and decided I wanted a change. Not to cut it short or anything but some color. I'm not a high maintenance gal so I wanted something which didn't require me to make several trips to get my hair done. With advice from a family member in the hair industry, she recommended balayage. With that said, I did research, found a pic of what I wanted. I booked an appt with Cecilia and wow, I am extremely happy with the results. I love my hair, and I loved the service. They served mimosas which totally hit the spot. The salon is out of the way for me since I have to cross the bay bridge but it's totally worth it. I will definitely come back. Albeit slightly more expensive than my budget allows, the quality of service, styling, color and cuts at Seven Salon are unbeatable. For my first appointment I had a long chat describing my hair, exactly what I wanted and the difficulties I have encountered with other "top-notch" stylists in the past. They immediately suggested I see Nikki - which was 100% the right choice. I have impossibly straight, flat hair with blond highlights. Nikki colors and cuts my hair better than ANY stylist I've been to in the past (and there is a LONG list of ex-stylists). I'd recommend her to anyone wanting long layers or expertly natural highlights. read more

I have a friend who went to this salon and the woman who did his hair. She told him he should dye his hair to make him look younger. This is infuriating--she was trying to make him feel self-conscious and encourage him to get his hair dyed with her and a facial, too. This is incredibly unprofessional and rude. I came in for a simple blow out and to potentially book the salon for my wedding team in august. I found the salon to be cool looking, although my chair footrest broke when I sat down and other furnishings seemed cheap. My stylist (Megan) was very nice, but I was not impressed with my style for $45. Front desk was snotty, if not unhelpful. My fiance also wanted a quick hair cut and it was if I asked for some huge favor. They also wanted travel fees and guarantees beyond what I had heard from other salons. Will be taking my $1500+ of wedding business elsewhere. read more

I went on a whim about a month ago and was really happy with Alisha. My hair was long, outgrown layers with sun and color damage, and I walked out with great, shiny hair. Seriously, it needed some major TLC and Alisha knew exactly what to do. I should have taken a "before" picture because it was quite a difference, and she didn't even have to cut my hair short to accomplish it. She created nice, flowing, even layers and listened really well to what I wanted. The cost was average - I think it was $55 for the cut plus $25 for a deep conditioner. She took her time and really massaged & worked the conditioner in to my hair, and it totally helped. I'll definitely go back and ask for Alisha again. read more

I usually receive bad or average at best hair cuts most of the time, manly because I travel a lot so I end up going to different salon around the world. But one day I was walking down College Avenue and saw this nice clean and modern looking salon and decided to see if they had any openings. I was lucky that day because there was a cancellation and I was able to get my hair cut by a beautiful women name Nikki. The hair cut I received was one of the best I have ever had. Not only did I receive a GREAT HAIR CUT, but the staff there were all so professional and EXTREMLY Hospitable as well. I like to get my hair cut weekly when possible but this hair cut was so great that I waited three week when I came back in town to book another appointment with Nikki again. I can't say anything bad about this place or the stylists, everybody is friendly and laid back and so stylish too. I've gotten to know some of the other stylists from my visits but I go to Lisa Catanesi for everything hair, she's the blonde in the photos. I've told her my head of hair is hers. The salon is in a great area where you can easily make a day of fun filled shopping and beautifying. Other's have mentioned the massage chairs while shampooing but they also provide hot tea, water or coffee and Michelle was sweet enough to share her candy with me... the place is fresh. I've been to the salon several times already, for cuts and color and Lisa is fantastic at both. It's fun to pick up ideas from the stylists too, for instance I love Jennifer's hair, and as it turns out Lisa styled hers! When my new cut grows a bit longer I'm definitely going for the current "Jennifer" I just love it!! I have very long, very thick, very wavy hair. It is a force to be reckoned with. It cleans out my bank account whenever I decide I need highlights, because of the sheer volume of dye it takes. Blow-drying it straight takes 45min to an hour and most of the time I don't want to waste another hour in a salon making some poor stylist dry it when I can do it better than them, and besides, it looks fabulous air-dried too. I've actually taken the blow dryer from a stylist and finished it myself before. Katya is the first stylist who has 1. insisted she see the finished product by blowing it out herself and 2. done such an amazing job that I haven't been able to reproduce it. I got three colors of highlights and an amazing cut, finished off by her styling it to make me look like some kind of hot celebrity cheerleader who I couldn't stop staring at in the mirror. Also, the atmosphere is classy and relaxing and all of the staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I just wish I had the dough to come here more often. read more

i love this salon...but i must admit i love michelle even more! it's the people who make the salon. all the staff is friendly and professional. if you are looking for an updo or haircut or color, Michelle Sue is your woman. When I came in for a trial, I had a few pictures from magazines of what I had in mind but yet i was still undecided. The true stylist that she was, Michelle worked her magic. She improvised on my half up do style and she impressed me with her skills. of course i had to book this girl pronto! On my wedding day, Michelle it stress-free. she arrived early and my most favorite thing about her is that she is meticulous. every strand of hair, and every curl had to be just PERFECT! she understands brides so well and she goes out of her way to make sure that her clients are satisfied. i definitely was VERY satisfied with Michelle's services. she went above and beyond my expectations. I had never had a "regular" hairstylist until I met Michelle. i go to her now for all my haircuts and color. she is the only person that has permission to touch my hair. i recently saw her a few days ago and i felt risky that day and i told her to just do her thing and chop it off. i don't think i've had short hair in more than 12 years. can i tell you how many compliments i've gotten?! I wish I had had access to yelp prior to this. I've tried many bay area salons from San Francisco to Walnut Creek. And the reviews of the salon were spot on. Great customer service from the staff the minute you walk in. A great haircut from Alicia who really listened to what I wanted and did exactly what she said she'd do. I was leery because I was still in recovery from the horrible highlight job I had paid big bucks for in the summer time. The stylist kept saying, I am only giving you a trim and then proceeded to chop 4 inches off my hair up to my chin. I was mortified. The highlights were actually yellow/green in my dark brown hair. I had asked for subtle.....so, after that I let several months go by before I ventured into a salon. So, I glad I found this one!!! At any rate, I highly recommend the salon and Alicia... read more
