just getting back from my dream honeymoon which followed my dream wedding in Oakland and need to write a quick review about my amazing hair/makeup by jenifer akagi and her team at 77salon. My husband's family have been going to jenifer akagi for years, mostly for haircuts/color and at least for one wedding hair/makeup or two! So, I knew that jenifer and her team would be a part of our big day. They were super easy to coordinate with when it came to making appointments and finding the right times for the day of the wedding. We don't live in California, so I did my trial as soon as I got in town for the wedding (4 days before....which I suppose is normal.) I came in with NO ideas but Jenifer was not phased. I told her I was going for a glam Diana Ross look and then a few snapshots of my dress and off she went. I felt like such a movie star! I immediately took a picture in front of the salon and sent to my sisters and mother. I went across the street from their Alameda location and got a bubble tea and walked around the rest of the day, feeling like a million bucks. The day of the wedding was no different. We had the Rockridge location to ourselves and were able to sit there and giggle while we were getting transformed. The atmosphere was perfect. Calm, chill, fun. After my two sisters were done, they went off to find some bubble tea (yes...second bubble tea of the week) and brought some back to enjoy. My third bridesmaid, Caleb's sister, is a new mom so they were super accommodating when her mom brought her little one so that she can nurse her. I think I heard Michelle (one of our amazing hair/makeup stylists) saying something about Caleb's sister being a beautiful model like Gisele. (The model was photographed in the past while getting hair/makeup done for a shoot and breastfeeding). Such a positive, beautiful observation! Hair: Straight A bob cut with fine straight Asian hair. Believe me, it's a difficult haircut. My relationship with hair stylists = speed dating. There's no such thing as love at first sight. Stylist: Brandon Yamamoto Service: Haircut, base color and highlights 5 stars for color, 3 stars for cut It's true what the other reviewers are saying, Brandon is AMAZING when it's come to coloring. I love the color that he chose for my hair and the highlights were flawless. My hair shines and I received compliments even before I left the salon! I gave cut 3 stars only because I had to come back for a re-do on the cut. I told Brandon that I wanted a dramatic A-line bob cut, and not a boring, plain bob cut (I have had one of those and it made me looked 10 years older, I vow never again.) He didn't realize that when I said "short", I really wanted short. haha. He was super accomodating when I came back and spent almost an hour on it! But then I went home and discovered that it was all lop sided. The lenght wasn't matching, but I didn't want to come back a second time to get it fixed, so I just paid $15 to get it fixed somewhere else. Conclusion: I don't know if I would come back to Brandon for cuts. Price: Definetely in the $$$ for me. $220 (excluding tip) for haircut and highlight. I ended up spending $300 because I got suckered into over $80 worth of Kerastase products but I figured if I am going to spend that much on highlights, I should at least invest in some good products to maintain the color and shiness. read more

The person who I spoke with was very nice, asking what my hair was like in an effort to match me with a stylist. I was able to get a same day appointment with Niki after someone cancelled. When I arrived, he was very gracious, offering water, tea, or coffee. I got my hair washed in what has been in my experience, the most luxurious chair (massage chair!). Niki consulted with me and was a great listener, attentively paying attention to the pictures I brought in and the concerns I had. She knew exactly what I wanted even though I lack the vocabulary to describe it. She was patient and warm. I paid $55 for my haircut, not including tip. This is a little more than I normally pay for a haircut but I think the expense is worth it. Bonus points because Niki includes complimentary bang trims between haircuts. read more

Today was my first haircut at Seven (Alameda location) and I had Nikki as my stylist. Let me tell you, she is GREAT. I have been living in the Bay Area for about 2 and a half years now and I can say I have officially found my stylist. She asked me what I was looking for and took the time to ask me a lot of questions, like what products I use, etc. And then looked at my hair and went over what she thought would work for me and really took the time to explain how she was going to cut it. I also have sensitive skin and have had issues with dermatitis on my scalp and she always made sure to let me know what she was putting in my hair and that its safe, etc. She was great. I was very lucky that I was able to get an appt the same day after searching for a salon in my local neighborhood. I know it's hard to find a good hair salon without booking an appointment a week in advance. The people at the hair salon were very nice as soon as I walked in and offered me a beverage before I got my cut. I had the great privilege to have Nikki as my hair stylist. I wanted to keep my hair long and healthy looking. I came in not knowing what I wanted to do with my hair I just knew what I didn't like about my hair, which it looked dry at the ends and stringy looking. I also enjoy the products they used in my hair - Kerastase product. I think $50 isn't bad for a haircut considering the service and the type of hair products they used in my hair. I definitely found my hair salon and stylist that I know I can entrust my hair care too. Whew! I also find it important to support your local merchants too. I have been in many, many times and have LOVED the results at each visit. This is a very hip little salon that boasts a few very talented stylists. As I am getting my hair done I am often looking at all the other work going on around me and am always impressed with what I see. Finally, a hair person who understands my hair texture! Should be part of the job description, right? Apparently, hairdressers across the several places I've lived across the country are unfamiliar with how bushy, wavy, prone-to-frizzy, wavy-but-not-curly, Jewish-ish lady hair works (and with the concept of listening to customers). It looks straight when it's wet, but it's not straight. it looks so wavy when it's dry that you might suspect that I actually have curly hair that I style wrong (this incorrect). At Seven Salon they actually listened to me when I explained how my hair works and what I wanted. I went away with a great haircut and a better understanding of how to style my hair. It's on the pricier side for me, but I don't get my hair done often (because it's so long and such a pain) so it's fun to treat myself. I'm going to come here from now on. I yelped this salon when I first moved to Oakland and just wanted to add my two cents. The first time I went, my stylist was nice and gave me a fine haircut, but it wasn't really what I wanted. It looked nice and grew out nicely, however, so no big complaints. Just not the "wow" moment I was hoping for. The second time I went, I took you all's advice and booked with Brandon. For only $5 more than the previous girl, I had a totally different experience. My hair was cut and styled to perfection and I'm sporting natural waves I didn't know were there without a lot of product and time. Definitely the best haircut I've had. Michelle is a great stylist who has been cutting my hair for about 3 years now and I have never had a bad cut. When I sit in that chair she makes you feel as though it's a team effort. She listens to what your needs are and tells you what will work best for your hair. I have total trust in Michelle and her scissors. I have never had the same hair cut twice and I love to watch the evolution of my hairstyles. When I first started going there I had long hair with great layers, super easy to style and now I have funky short style. After starting school again and not having a job, I was looking for cheaper ways to get my hair cut and found Jaime, who was looking for hair models to do bob cuts on. The salon is only a few blocks from the Rockridge station, and is very cute inside. Jaime was was nice, and asked me if I had any ideas as to what I wanted for my hair cut. I was pretty flexible so I let her and her teacher decide on a graduated "A line" cut. I'll admit, I was a bit nervous, because I had just looked at pictures of Victoria Beckham's hair and wasn't sure I could pull it off. I didn't have to worry, though. By the end my hair looked perfect! It framed my elongated face very well, and I think it even made me look a tad more sophisticated than before! I visited this salon based on it's Yelp reviews and I was not disappointed! I have been seeing Katya for about a year and have had the most flawless haircuts EVER! She is stylish and has a similar hair type to my own, so she always seems to know exactly what I'm looking for. Her level of conversational engagement in perfect (not too chatty, not too quiet). She doesn't rush me out of the chair and takes time to make sure I am leaving with a hair cut I am happy with. She doesn't over-sell products but did introduce me to a fantastic straightening iron, which I later purchased. If you want a modern, hip haircut that isn't overly trendy then go see her! A bonus is how beautifully it grows out, which keeps me from seeing her more often, but also shows that she is truly a gifted stylist. The salon atmosphere is lovely, every staff member I've interacted with has been pleasant, welcoming and not at all intimidating/judgy like OTHER salons *narrows eyes at no one in particular*. Love this salon! After moving to Berkeley from Washington DC, I had been looking for a salon nearby. I had been putting it off for awhile and then decided it was time to venture out and take the plunge of finding a stylist. I have very long, thicker, wavy black hair and I needed just a trim before my upcoming wedding in a week. I did a lot of yelp research and decided on Seven; I ended up booking with Nikki and she was phenomenal. Sweet, friendly, and very helpful, clearly very experienced. I was greeted promptly, and Nikki even asked what kind of hair products I normally use on my hair to replicate (i.e. I use SLS free cleansing creme so she washed my hair with the same!). I got to sip on a mimosa during the haircut while Nikki gave me the perfect trim to take the ends off and whip my side bangs back into shape. She spent a very long time blow drying my hair to style it exactly as I would and it looked perfect. Can't wait to go back for another cut soon and would trust her with doing something new to my hair also! The ONLY thing I disliked about this place is that it's cash tip only (I rarely if ever carry much cash) but will be prepared next time to avoid using their ATM, paying the fee, and taking out even more cash after spending a quite a bit on a nice haircut. read more

I'm trying to grow out my hair and leave the color (old color is growing out) and Katya makes me feel like she's 100% behind me in both of these very strategic endeavors. This is a review for CJ. He's amazing and this review is long overdue. He's been cutting my hair now for over a year and just helped me make a MAJOR transition from what I was wearing to something new and I LOVE it! CJ cuts both my wife and my hair. She loves him too and she's really picky about her hair. I've switched around with several people at the salon, but CJ has been my go to guy now and I don't see that changing any time soon. Service is great here, too. The receptionists are always nice and really get to know you by name, which is great. If you're looking for a great experience and cut I recommend 77 Salon and CJ! LOVE. I found Seven after a long and painful hunt for a new hairdresser after moving to the bay area. The last cut I had was atrocious.. SUPER lopsided and not cute. I had an appointment with Joshua booked for a few weeks and got a call from the salon the afternoon of my appointment asking to push it back. Joshua was behind after covering extra clients that day to help out. It would have been fine if I checked my messages while running around... which I didn't.. so I returned the call after I parked. My bad. I told the receptionist that I was already there for my 3:30 and without missing a beat offered a complimentary deep conditioning treatment while I wait. EPIC customer service. The treatment was amazing and Joshua couldn't have done a better job. SOO SO happy. I usually have long layers, or I did before the bad cut, and Joshua was able to get my hair back to a manageable, symmetrical, cute style again. I have finally found my hair person. read more

Brandon is AWESOME. I came in kinda, maybe, not really, knowing what I wanted to do with my hair... with no pics to back me up, so I was no help lol, yet he was still able to make magic with my hair! He was very kind and helpful throughout the whole process of coloring my hair, I felt totally at ease, maybe a bit too comfortable cuz my eyes kept shutting on me and I was this close to falling asleep...that's how relaxing my session was. He gave me many useful tips as to how to care for my hair and my scalp, such as that Head & Shoulders would be toxic to my colored hair, that I should use a conditioning treatment to treat my dry scalp, as well as that I should invest in some shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. I LOVE LUV LOVE my hair and I cannot wait to go back to Brandon for his special cut technique that will help me better manage my growing, curly, frizzy hair! Finally Seven has arrived in OAKLAND!! Seven is an esthetically beautiful high quality hair and skin salon with awesome products and great staff. It feels really welcoming and friendly. While living in SF I frequented many salons like Elevation, Architects & Heros, Festoon, D. Petro Todd, Aveda etc. and after going to Seven this past Thursday I feel like I got all the bonuses of a high quality SF salon without any of the negatives (like driving into the city, parking, waiting for a late stylist who is snotty and doesn't apologize, and paying $$$ and having to dry my own hair because the assistants are busy.) Seven Salon has friendly staff, Kerastase products, they understand you don't have a lot of time (i.e. Lisa finished my highlights in 1.5 hours which is awesome alone but then since we had time left she asked if I wanted a hair cut too so I didn't have to rearrange my schedule to come back - and yes I did!). I love my cut and color. Lisa is soooo good and listened to what I wanted. Lisa also knows how to make fine hair have more body - a life long quest of mine. Thank you, Lisa! Yesterday was my family's first experience at Salon 77. My high school senior gets her hair cut maybe twice a year. She's got that long, teenage hair thing going on and never wants to cut it. But she's a swimmer and it gets so dry. Her usual stylist's back went out and she had a college related gathering and REALLY needed a hair cut. I found Salon 77 on the internet on a Friday and made an appointment with the only stylist who had an opening on Saturday. Got a call on Saturday AM that that stylist was home sick so Lisa jumped in to the rescue, I think maybe missing a lunch break even, and gave my 18 year old a KILLER hair cut. This is probably the first time I have really ever seen any "style" in her hair. Her last $90 hair cut with my old stylist was a $90 TRIM. If she's only getting her hair cut twice a year, it needs to count. Lisa's cut was $100, but it was 100% worth it. We will both be back! I highly recommend this salon and specifically the stylist Laura Shin. I love how they welcome you with a beverage of choice (water, tea, wine, etc!) and have a humungous bowl of candy available. My stylist, Laura, asked me specific questions about how I wanted my haircut and then clearly explained what she was planning on doing in the haircut. She was able to blend what I wanted with her professional expertise to give me an amazing haircut. She is very friendly and professional! Even though you need to book a few weeks in advance, this place is totally worth it. My stylist, Katya at Seven Salon is awesome! I've followed her around to a few of the salons that she has worked at and Seven wins hands down! The environment is comfortable yet chic and the staff is knowledgable and friendly. I loved the massaging shampoo chairs, it almost put me to sleep when you mix in the warm water and head massage! Katya is brillant with a pair of scissors and knows how to always give the perfect cut. Unlike other stylist that I have been to over the years, Katya always makes me look great. She listens to what I want and is great at giving suggestions and advice for what will work with your hair. Even if I want to try something new and different, she lets me know if the cut works with my face and hair type. When it comes to color, Katya manages to give me the bluest-black ever! And it's always, super shiney and healthy! We joke that by the time she finishes with the cut and color, that I have "wig hair"! So I just happen to stumble on in to this great new salon called 7! And I gotta tell ya I left feeling like I was on top of the world. They set me up with a stylist named Katya. Upon meeting her I couldn't help but notice how cool and edgy she looked. Plus she had a cool haircut and colour. Anyways she sat me down and talked about what she wanted to do with my hair but as we continued to talk I just said, "Do whatever you want, I trust you and I can tell you know what your talking about when it comes to hair." So I just closed my eyes and let her work her magic. Though I did peak once and a while at what she was doing, and she makes the cutest faces when she was cutting my hair...she was clearly into it. AND I LOVE IT! When it was done I swear it was the best cut I have ever had. It looked and felt like a Sassoon haircut which I used to get in the city, but over there its too pricey and too snotty! However I just love these precision type haircuts and all its uniqueness...I mean who doesn't. So anyways if you want a precision haircut Sassoon style...Katya is all over it and THE only way to go! My first experience there was AMAZING. I went there pretty early before the time of my appointment, but I found out that my appointment was moved to an earlier time so I didn't have to wait long. The place is very classy and has a nice atmosphere. Right from the very beginning you are asked if u want something to drink and there are chocolate treats on the table in the waiting area. I grabbed some M&Ms to munch on. Katya, who cut my hair, did a wonderful job. I really love my haircut! She did it exactly the way I wanted it and more because of how she styled it. I've lost my stylist and back up stylist in the same season...one went to England on exchange and another was transferred to LA. Around the same time I moved in with my boyfriend in Oakland. I was very happy when Seven Salon opened up, because the other place I was going to just wasn't cutting it. Seven Salon was nearby, clean and had a good atmosphere. The massaging shampoo seats are interesting, and I love how the hairdryers pull down from the ceiling. I've been to Katya twice and she did a good job with my bob. I have been a regular client for over 4 years! My fantastic stylist is Nikki. I get my base color, highlights and a cut every 3 months. The results are always so fantastic! Nikki is very skilled with my fine hair. She really takes her time to place and prep the highlights. I totally trust her to do different things with the highlights (placement, colors etc.) I must say that ALL the stylist at Seven Salon are extremely talented and professional hair people. The clientele is a wide range: all ages and all styles from conservative to edgy. I did see Marie once (due to a last minute scheduling change) and she was excellent too. If you are new to the salon, when you call, just tell the front desk about your hair and what you are looking for, they will give you a couple names of the right stylist for you. Wooo Hoo! I had a horrible experience at Weeds Salon (which I also reviewed on Yelp) that left my hair butchered--no exaggeration. My hair grows very slowly and I've been trying to grow it out for years, so this was a major setback. I called Seven Salon and talked to the receptionist about my hair--blonde, thick, slightly curly but worn straight--and my desire to find a top-notch stylist who could work some magic. I was referred to Megan M. (the senior stylist), who did a bang-up job. She really listened to me during the consultation and we talked through exactly what would be done. She was not shy about providing recommendations, which I appreciate. After all, she's the professional! Megan added warm and bright blonde highlights to my hair. She noticed that my previous color jobs were sloppy--my hair is thick and apparently other stylists got lazy and only really colored the top layers. Megan took her time and did a very thorough, natural-looking job. Even more important, she did a wonderful job on the cut. I went here for a big hair style change: waist length hair to something shorter, wasn't sure what specifically. I wanted a good cut, though. Jennifer worked magic: she clipped & cut my hair into something really cute. One of the better/best cuts I've ever had. This review is about the services of the aesthetician, Shelly, since I haven't found a review yet related to her work. I have been to Seven Salon a few times now, working with Shelly who is the aesthetician there. She is amazing! I've had my brows waxed and, today, had a facial. Shelly is so warm and personable, and knows her stuff, too! She thoroughly reviewed my current skin care routine and adjusted the facial accordingly. Because this was my first facial, she was very concerned that I have a good experience and took extra care with my sensitive skin as she applied her various cleansers, masques, and moisture treatments. A very relaxing experience, and something I hope to do again! The best part, I didn't have to worry about the "hard sell" of products she uses. She discussed what I'm currently using and suggested ingredients/agents to look for in products but never implied I needed to buy the ones she has for sale at the salon. My only negative (and I mention this because I've had trouble with this the past two times I've visited the salon - not that it's Shelly's issue, per se, but something that colors the experience): if you use a debit card, they debit the cost of service + 20% gratuity, even if, like me, you leave a cash gratuity. And, for some reason, today's visit ended up hitting my account twice! I called the Salon to find out what happened and, though she tried to sort out the error, the receptionist couldn't tell me why I have 2 x (cost of service + 20% gratuity) debited from my account. I hope the issue will be resolved shortly and will consider paying cash next time. read more

Katya is an amazing stylist who really enjoys her work. She is very attentive and will really listen to what you want and don't want, but will also offer up lots of creative suggestions as she goes. She is very focused and adept at a variety of cuts. I also appreciate that you never get pressured into buying (expensive) products. If you're interested they'll make recommendations but otherwise nobody pushes a sale. The salon itself is very relaxing with a friendly staff. I recommend it to anyone looking for a cut, and while I've only had my hair cut by Katya and occasionally Michelle. I've seen nothing but satisfied customers walking out of there. read more

Their online booking system rocks. I wish more places would have this kind of system. 2. Tiffany, the receptionist, could not have been nicer or more professional. My last salon visit was at another salon and it the results were mediocre at best and the customer service was horrible. My roots grow in lighter than the rest of my hair so the color needed to be evened out and my last haircut was making me look like an electrocuted sheep dog. After I booked my appointment online (Hilight W/Base & Cut), I emailed the salon to ask if I was an appropriate client for the stylist based on what I was looking for. Tiffany promptly wrote back and suggested a different colorist. I then sent several long, neurotic emails about the color I was looking for and concerns about styling. I always received a prompt, professional response from Tiffany even though I probably came across as the potential client from hell. ;) I received a call today to see if I could come in, as Jenifer, the co-owner had a cancellation and Tiffany thought she would be an excellent match for my cut and color concerns. When I was booking online, Jenifer's next appointment wasn't until June 3rd. Jenifer was lovely, low-key and a professional and knew her stuff. She had even looked at the email I had sent to Tiffany where I included a photo of a celebrity whose color I really liked. She gave me a couple of options and suggested things that were more in line with my budget . So instead of doing a base color and full highlights, she suggested a bleach mix on the ends of my hair to lighten it up and then applied a demi-permanent color. My color is now an awesome shade of this vibrant, auburn/cinnamon red. Jenifer even applied this color to my eyebrows at no extra cost. She can also do a blow-out sans a flat iron without the dreaded "my hair is a giant poufy bird's nest" result. I booked another appointment with Jenifer before I left the salon. I highly recommend this salon, especially for those naturally curly haired girls who are still on a quest to find a stylist who can actually cut naturally curly hair, as well as for color (obviously). :) read more

This is the first time I have ever written a review of a business online because I try not to so as to help local businesses. I would recommend you support another local business. I had called a month prior to my appointment to arrange a simple female haircut and knowing that pricing varies by stylist I had emphasized that I would like to be paired with a more affordable one (around $83). I received a call the day of the cut and found out I had actually been assigned one of the owners/someone on the expensive end of the spectrum ($150). When I pointed out that I found this pretty disappointing given my request 1 month ago, the person on the other end of the phone reacted in a very patronizing, arrogant and aloof manner. This I found to be unacceptable -- the assignment error is not the main reason for the 1-star review. It was the level of patronization and arrogance that truly made me feel like I did not want to return here for pampering. If you care about supporting local business, I would suggest taking your business elsewhere. Interestingly, I found at least one other negative review on here that is also essentially pointing out the cheeky and arrogant approach of the salon. I had a wonderful experience and a beautiful haircut with Meg this past week. She is fairly new to the salon (two months) but knows her stuff. She studied my hair to really see how it falls, etc. She also took extra time to treat my hair to a "stripping" of sorts given I had a lot of buildup. While I had a long time hair stylist in North Berkeley, I am just too crunched for time these days post-baby and one on the way. So, I am looking to build a new relationship with a stylist. I hope I have found this in Meg! The salon is very nice. One thing that is neat...the hair dryers pull out of the ceiling magically. It is like being at a "lube and oil" station, except for hair. Fun! My only complaint: the hair washing basins were very uncomfortable to me. They really hurt my neck. Perhaps I was sitting improperly? I look forward to returning. read more
