I was so glad that I didn't rent a car from national chains. I remember when I lived in Waikiki as a kama'aina, renting a fancy new car was an obvious target for car theft. There is no exception, I am a tourist today. I want my rental car to look like a locally driven car. That was why I chose 808 Smart Car Rentals. We arrived on Sunday. While I was doing my casual walk after dinner, I found this rental car company just a few blocks from my hotel. After plotting my routes for the circle island tour, I couldn't afford to get with the tour bus company because the tour hours were super early to super late. I am an old man. I want my freedom as a tourist. So, I started shopping around on Monday to find the best deal. On Google Maps, it shows the Enterprise label on the window from Nohonani Street. But this is certainly a new business here. I walked into this office and I was greeted by a friendly employee (I didn't catch her name). She gave me all the essential information and encouraged me to book online to save time, whenever I decide to rent from them. I was so determined to get a rental car on Tuesday. So, I booked online. The prices are very reasonable, after I compared a few car models. Booking online only took me about 5 minutes on my small phone screen. The website was pretty efficient and informative with no fine prints. It didn't ask for a credit card or anything. After I booked online, I walked over to pick up my car. There was a slight wait because they were shorthanded. I didn't mind waiting. That gave me time to plan my route around the island. She took time to make sure I understood the terms and conditions. Then, the employee who showed me the car was also thorough with the inspection. He had to point out the dents and asked me to mark if anything else I found. The car handled well on the road. I couldn't believe that I only drove 144 miles (I forgot this is an island). I enjoyed all the features on the car. I parked my car at the hotel parking lot when I was done for the day. Next morning, I bought gas on Kapahulu and returned the car to fulfill the 24-hour term. Returning process was a smooth one, too. I am a fan of 808 Smart Car Rentals. Have made 2 rentals with this company - both handled by Ms. Shania. Hands down 100/10 service!!!!!! This gal has been so helpful, accommodating, and uber professional! First off - always super smiley and very courteous! First rental I did was just for two days - but she got me what I needed. The super tiny vehicle - yeah - it had some glitches (like this jerky motion any time the vehicle was changing gear - the vehicle kinda jolted around but I figure it was due to changing gears). I didn't have the rental long enough but let her know upon return. Had to laugh cuz I had the hand crank for the windows - a bit nostalgic for those of us remembering cars BEFORE electronic times on that! (wait does that mean I'm old now? NOOOO don't tell me!!!!! I'm still a kid!) 2nd time - still using the vehicle - I was in a rush - and wasn't trying to rush her - just had some really urgent things happening and when I explained all - she was super fast getting everything done for me! AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME gal for accommodating me on such short last minute notice. (I mean they do take a lot of walk ins) She was so eager to help me out she was jotting down all I saw on the walkover of the vehicle so that she could help expedite things. She even took me up to the floor where the vehicle was parked cuz she knew I was on a time crunch drove me down the garage - to the ground level and we just swapped places (of course after I made deposit and all). But she really made her fingers fly on the keyboard helping me out! Hands down she was super excited for me on my new adventures and was very eager to help get me on my way and ensure my success! Prices are extremely reasonable as well - less than $30 per day! Compare that to say Enterprise - I'd be paying well over $400 that just the rental and NOT inclusive to the insurance. VERY affordable here. And extremely accommodating! You can even go in person and reserve in advance, or can call them on the phone. These folks know life is busy, and most want to just get point A to point B without too much hassle and having to sign your life away. They don't do that here. They really decent! And using the tiny cars you can fit ANYWHERE! Kudos Shania for your assistance, and NOW I know who to go to for short term rentals! THANK YOU!!!! Keep it up Smart Cars - you doing people right! (just maybe update the radio systems to incorporate cell phone synching so you don't get pulled over for cell phone usage by the police - hasn't happened, but that would be my only suggestion). We were helped out by Marie! She was very efficient and helped us through the whole process! Total price after taxes and fees for the 3-day smart car was $140, and let me tell you.... Best rental we've done. You can fit ANYWHERE for parking. We saved at least $30/day on parking because we would fit in the tiniest free parking spots!! A little bumpy ride but what can you expect from a smart car? It's worth it for two people! Trust me! read more

worst car rental ever! Paid $20 extra a day for the smart car convertible. Car had no shocks the seats were covered in old seat covers one of the tail lights didn't work. We were already on the road to the NS when we started realizing these issues. I complained to the girl running the desk when we got back. She wouldn't even tell the manager what the issues were. All he said was we should've brought it back if we didn't like it. Easy enough to say when you are right in the area, but we vacationing on another part of the island. Do not rent a car from this place their cars are junk. read more

Friendly service but very deceptive charges. The 3 day special was $129 at this location but we drove by the other location which is only half a mile away and they are advertising $99 for the 3 day special. Apparently you can park there overnight for $20 but at this location we were told it was $30 to park. At the booth we were charged $35. We asked if we could return the car a day early but after hours. They do not have a key drop at this location so she said we could drop it off at the other location half a mile away after hours. Called today to verify and it's a $50 charge to do this. Was told I have until 4:45pm to return and I pull up at both locations and they are closed at 1pm and 3pm. Phone recording says hours are 8-5 but apparently website lists all different hours. Will not use again. read more

Words and stars cannot express how great the rental agency is. Their website does not mention that they have many other vehicles in addition to Smart Cars. I have rented vehicles in Hawaii for many years when visiting and this experience has been the best (I also rented from them last year). Vince and Juliette were always helpful, showed me the best value provided direction in what I needed. They went above and beyond the call of duty in general and the response from the team when I ran into an issue with a vehicle (self inflicted!) surpasses the expectations i would have from any agency . As I rented several times I was impressed with the staff and want to also thank Niko, Shania and Marie. All of you were so pleasant and made this trip even more positive.
