I was surprised how good the food is here. The deluxe chocolate mousse cake, milk pudding and ham and cheese bun were so delicious. The tiramisu needed more coffee flavour. It was still good but if you are looking for an Italian tiramisu I would leave this one in the cooler for someone else to enjoy. The service was fast. The cashier was nice enough to show the new and previous pins in case I wanted the other one as the freebie for purchasing (2) strawberry drinks. The staff member making the drinks was a little off-putting since she couldn't see the cream that was leaking and sitting under the rim of the plastic cover and tried to do a quick swipe and return it with barely anything wiped away when I mentioned it. Always stop by to grab some pastries and desserts when we are in Bellaire. Our family favorites are the chocolate bun and the brioche bread, but there are very few things we don't like. I will say, the prices have dramatically increased from even just last year but I understand the rising cost of everything. Still my favorite place to go in Chinatown. My family and I get the same buns every time. My favorite is the Matcha bun and the Choco buns Oreo buns. All of those are my son's favorite and my husband is the only one that's brave that tries a little bit of everything. I love the strawberry dessert. Visited at around 8pm on a Wednesday night, and the shelves were still pretty well stocked. Egg tarts were limited to the 2 packs and 1 box of 6 reg egg tarts. Egg tarts are always a hit with crispy puff pastry and sweet, custardy egg in the center. I tried the chocolate mousse in a cup. This was a surprisingly tasty dessert! There is a layer of chocolate syrup on top of light chocolate mousse with a Maraschino cherry center. I could do without the cherry center personally, but if you like it then its a nice touch to spice up an otherwise homogenous treat. I've been to 85 bakery before but in dallas so this spot in Houston was a first. Still a good spot for all your Asian pastries cravings. Our go to spot for taro pastries. We got the marble taro bun, macadamia cookie, grapefruit green tea, and matcha oat PSL. The matcha was excellent, tasted exactly like described with pumpkin. The grapefruit green tea was so refreshing and the macadamia cookie was delicious. We will definitely be back if we are in town. Absolutely love this bakery that we stopped by twice during our Houston visit. They had unique bread that we do not have on the east coast. The milk bread was our favorite as it had a light custard inside. We loved how most items weren't overly sweet and were so fresh. I had always thought 85 degrees was known for slightly underbaked bread but it must have been that one store. This location is very spacious and clean. Variety of pastries on the shelves wasn't as vast as I would have preferred but everything they had was great! I bought the guava turnover, mango custard bun, milk bun, and the spiral taro. Yummy! Bakery options are good and decent prices overall. I think their bake options is quite small compare to everywhere else. Mooncakes are good and not the typical dried mooncakes that I grew up eating. A few selections here compare to other locations, like 2. I do like that everything is individually wrapped so you just grab and go, without worrying about tiny human hands touching your food without your consent. Lots of space inside but very few tables/chairs. It's mostly just open space for their line, that usually isn't even long. Be cautious of this side of the parking lot in this plaza as there's always a lot of broken glasses and giant pot holes everywhere. Iced Vietnamese coffee is a good go to. DO NOT get their speciality taro lavender latte. I got an iced medium, took a sip and tossed it. It's just a couple scoop of taro lavender powder, mixed with a little hot water and steamed milk on top in an iced cup. I was told their latte is just that, no espresso shots. It is purely disgusting. $5 down the drain in a matter of seconds for just milk and powder. The lady who made my drink went to the back to ask someone if she's missing anything before sealing my drink. After I took a sip out of my drink, I questioned her but she said and I quote, "latte is just with milk and flavored". Then the whole cup went into their trash. A real latte is 1-2 shots of expresso, with steamed milk, and a thin layer of froth on top - sometimes flavored, in this case, should have been flavored with taro lavender. Am I wrong? I don't see myself being adventurous here to try other drinks after this incident. read more

I really like 85 Degrees and appreciate how it has expanded so much in the US. I would say the desserts are Taiwanese-inspired and not traditional as they are just as sweet as western desserts. During this visit, I got the coconut twist, taro swirl, and Hokkaido custard bun. These pastries were all between $2-$3. I enjoyed all of these, and I especially liked the flavour of the custard bun! Uhhhh, this restaurant reminds me so much of El Boillio for Mexican desserts except for it isn't as packed as 85 degrees. I remember visiting the restaurant several years ago, but this time they arranged where to get the sweets and sectioned it off to a corner. And so how I have no idea why popular restaurants love long lines, but yep it was a line and a continuum of standing. There's absolutely nothing vegan at the bakery to sample. All the bakery items has milk and eggs in it which is bummer. The sea salt matcha oat milk tea was flat. It didn't have that powerful earthy taste of matcha and the drink tasted more milked down. It was not good. I didn't even taste any sea salt. My sister commented that the desserts were very subtle sweet. This place is a hit or miss, sometimes it's good sometimes it's ok. I've tried a couple of their baked breads and found them all to be too sweet for my tastebuds, good news is if you have a sweet tooth you'll like this place. For the most part this bakery is self-serve except for the drinks and some of the desserts. There's a lot of empty space and a corner filled with breads but there aren't many tables to sit at, I think most people just take the pastries to-go. My go to is their egg tarts, they are a tad sweeter than your typical egg tarts from other asian bakeries but the egg is so silky smooth and the slightly burnt top gives it a nice caramel bitterness to offset the sweetness. Like I said, sometimes it's good sometimes it's just ok. I went here on a Saturday and got their egg tarts and they were delish! But then came again the following Thursday and found most of them to be overbaked, the shell was a little soggy, and some egg tart boxes had a bit of what looked like parsley flakes accidentally sprinkled on them (I'm pretty sure they are not supposed to be there). I also like to get their Boba Milk Tea, which is a bit sweet for me too so I usually ask for less sugar. I recommend their Hokkaido Chiffon Cake, they are like little cupcakes but way better, the cream in between the chiffon cake slices are just chefs kiss. I think 85C Bakery is worth checking out as there is bound to be something there you like. In addition to their breads, there's actually a whole case full of different kinds of cakes and desserts which I have yet to try. Plus they offer a multitude of milk teas, coffees, etc. read more

The pastries here are delicious and not too sweet for being dessert which is nice. It's usually pretty busy when I've gone but the line moves quickly. I've tried their strawberry square cake and it's so yummy and light and barely sweet which adds to the experience. Their chocolate cake cookie is also delightful, it has what tastes like Oreos sprinkled on and it's the texture of cake. For $2.25 it's a great deal and again it's not too sweet...just perfect. Their sausage pastry is also very good but I wish they were served warm as that would make it better. The location itself is very spacious but I wish there were more seating options inside.
