I wanted to like 858 Burger Joint since it is new, but unfortunately it was a pretty disappointing experience. The food was okay, but not good enough for the price. I paid around $26 for a double bacon cheeseburger, onion rings, and a fountain soda, which feels high for the quality and overall experience. The burger itself was not bad, but the fries tasted like basic frozen bag fries, and the onion rings were only okay. The service also did not help. The ketchup dispenser was empty, and when my wife asked for ketchup, the employee just handed her a bunch of packets instead of refilling it. She also seemed more focused on watching the Mexico World Cup game than helping customers. I understand wanting to watch the game, but at these prices, the service should be better. I've had smashed burgers before but these were smashed into nothingness! Literally less than 1/8" thick patty. My slice of American cheese was thicker than the patty. There were 4 normal slices of pickles on the burger, which amounted to more beef. A vegetarian burger would have more beef it would seem. Finally a true smash burger!! We stopped here after some shopping and ordered the classic with dirty fries. The shop itself is sort of on the corner of a small parking lot and the parking situation is not good. It's right by The Taco Stand so the area itself is pretty busy! Nonetheless when we found a spot we headed in and loved the vibe. It felt very modern diner. The food itself was pretty good!! A well seasoned patty that was actually smashed so the cook and crisp were perfect. The dirty fries were also delicious. Absolutely filled with goodness. The menu is pretty small so all of their focus goes into making delicious burgers. I ordered the American, a classic burger with cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. Since smashburger patties usually are pretty thin, I added a second one. Now this was a hefty burger! The brioche buns were buttery and fluffy and the patties were crispy along the edges. We also got an order of fries and onion rings and these could be some of the best fries in San Diego! I tried a bit of the 858 Burger which has bacon onion jam. I was expecting to enjoy the sweet, savory flavors but I didn't think the jam added much to the burger overall. Also, if you order the Classic, just be aware that it doesn't come with the usual veggies. It's a little deep in downtown La Jolla but I think it's worth the drive! I definitely recommend parking on the street for free, or you can use the meters nearby if you don't mind paying. I've passed by this place so many times and always wanted to try it, so my boyfriend and I finally stopped in and ordered their original 858 burger. It was around $14, which is on the more expensive side for a burger, but I had high hopes and was really excited to try it. The place itself had a great vibe. I loved the metro, cool aesthetic, it kind of gave off a race-car feel, and everything was super clean. The service was awesome, too. They even had a bowl of candy since we came around Halloween. Their milkshakes looked incredible and the whole menu looked tempting, but we wanted to try their iconic burger. It came out in about 10 minutes, but honestly, it was disappointing. There were no toppings, just grilled onions and two smashed patties. The flavor was decent with good seasoning, salty in a good way, and the sauce was great, but it didn't feel worth $14 at all. No lettuce, no tomatoes, nothing. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this spot because it felt really overpriced for what we got. The texture and crunch reminded me of a high-end version of Rally's or Checkers seasoned fries (which I already love), but elevated. Good little burger spot in the heart of La Jolla. Connected to a Empanada spot which is good too. Customer service was good, a young tall (I'm only 5'5 so everyone is tall to me) Latina girl helped us & she was very helpful & nice. We got 3 burgers, Classic, American & the 858, I tasted all 3 & they were good. My fav was the American, wife was the 858 so she took mine & I took her American. And make it a double if you can eat like me, it's worth it. My kids loved their classics & love their Dirty Fries they said it was better then In & Out Animal Style Fries & I agree. We also had their onion rings they were amazing, try their ranch it's very good. We ate inside & it was really clean & spacious & a good vibe. Overall we liked it alot & will come back when we in LA Jolla. The first thing we noticed was how insanely greasy the burgers were. We used the self-order kiosk, so we didn't really interact with staff, but the employees looked overwhelmed even though the restaurant was only about a quarter full. The food itself was honestly about a 2/10, but I'm giving it a 0/10 because we both got sick afterwards. By the time we got home, we were nonstop vomiting. Just had an American burger again to see how it compared to when they first opened. It may seem like small changes. but the onion jam has been replaced by grilled onions, it now comes with 1000 island dressing and the bun is a little more substantial. The combination makes for a very filling single patty burger. It now ticks all the boxes. It reminds me a lot of the Bob's Big Boy burgers of my youth. With a side of onion rings and a delicious chocolate milkshake, it doesn't get any more American than this. In a good way... Shout out to Andrea (one of the owners) for continuing to tweak the menu. ONE STAR for their namesake 858 Burger featuring white cheddar cheese, bacon & onion jam and umami sauce. I absolutely loved this one although my cousin said it was too sweet. I got plenty of sweet, caramelized onion which I love!! Their classic burger was good too but very thin Pattie's was disappointing. I do understand these are smash burgers but these are paper thin. Fries were just basic...nothing special or crisp about them. Wished we got the onion rings instead. I thought the burgers were reasonably priced when I was looking at the online menu but when I saw what we got I think it isn't worth it. Unfortunately I think this place will be another restaurant next year (as this venue has been turned around 5 times in the time I've worked in La Jolla). Three types of smashburgers and five sides were the savory menu offerings. Milkshakes, a chocolate chip cookie, and mini churros were the sweet treats. I picked a Classic smashburger with sweet potato fries for my meal. The burger was a beef patty dressed with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles, and thousand island sauce on a buttered brioche bun. The patty had crispy edges around the perimeter which was good. That being said, I thought the featured burger of the predecessor was a better product. The real disappointment was the sweet potato fries. They were soggy inside the cardboard cup and not worth $4.50 for the amount given. The service was okay as the wait to receive my food wasn't too long. The menu prices were similar to the previous business so that was a wash. I rated my experience at a three star level for 858 Burger. read more

We were in the mood for a snack and I pre-ordered a couple of orders of just fries. I'm glad I pre-ordered because the wait times are quite long. It was busy. It was loud. And it was clear that they were understaffed. There was one girl at the counter-- she was taking orders, processing payments, packing the orders, making the milkshakes and running food from the window to the tables. In the kitchen or looked like there was only one person working. That was it. The poor girl was running while attempting to get orders processed as quickly as possible. I genuinely felt bad for her. I was standing waiting for my order for about 15 min, and in the time it was oh so clear that they needed to hire another staff member to help at the front of house.
