We decided to go with the guava soju carafe ($23). It tasted just as how I expected it would taste, like lightly alcoholic guava juice. Tian bu la ($10): pretty solid dish. I thought that the fish cake could be seasoned more. The sauce that came with the tian bu la was good but we ended up dipping everything in the sauce that came with the Taiwanese sausage instead. Taiwanese sausage ($8): I personally prefer sweeter Taiwanese sausage. The fermented chivey garlic sauce was great, though. It was super tangy and garlicky! Scallion pancake beef wrap ($13): the scallion pancake flavor was muted by the mayo spread inside. There was a LOT of cucumber... I love cucumbers but this was almost too much! The beef was tender but on the dry side. Sacha black pepper beef ($15): this dish mostly tasted like sacha sauce, which is a good thing if you are a fan. There wasn't too much beef (probably 20% beef and 80% vegetables). Hakka stir fry ($14): the peppers in this dish packed a spicy punch! I liked this dish more than the sacha black pepper beef. There wasn't a lot of pork in this dish either but the slices of bean curd helped the dish feel fuller. The vibes here are very fun! Every once in a while I come across restaurants with food that is packed with such intense flavor that I am in pure awe. First was Kopitiam and second is this spot. I wanted the beef noodle soup but they were out of broth but offered the noodles dry. I said sure and got the popcorn chicken. GET THE BROTH. Those noodles and sauce had such bold flavor. Granted I did drench it in chili oil but it was so good. Not just one note. I think the broth would have diluted the flavor a bit and made it a hearty dish. The popcorn chicken was drenched in a sweet honey glaze. It was my first time having fried chicken with honey. I'm a firm believer that honey always belongs on fried chicken now. I've visited 886 quite a few times, and it still does not disappoint. I have to say that I've tried almost everything on the menu, and everything is pretty top-notch. Luckily, my friend and I were seated at one of their booths. Wow, no hand sanitizer bottles for the table so you need to bring your own. 886 has been extremely famous and popular among Taiwanese group since it opened a few years ago. We were so behind and finally had a chance to visit last month. We made a reservation for a group of 4 people on a Saturday night and we highly recommend to do so. The seating was limited so it was crowded during dinner time. There isn't a great variety of options on the menu except of a few signature Taiwanwss dishes which we were craving for a while due to homesickness. We had their Honey Glazed Popcorn Chicken, Charred Cabbage & Bacon, Zhu Xie Gao, Hakka Stir Fry, Lo Ba Bang and Taiwan Beer to share. Wow, my third of fourth time here and it still doesn't disappoint. So I came here with a couple new friends for lunch. We are standing outside at 11:45 for a noon lunch. It's closed. 11:50. Closed. 11:58. Closed. 12:00 noon, server walks into work, opens the door for us, and we get seated. And shockingly, we ordered and had our food on the table by 12:15. Everything here is good. They've revamped a few things since I last came - added a sweet honey flair to the popcorn chicken (not authentic at all, but tasty AF), and unfortunately took the tomato + scrambled eggs off the menu. Was the tomato + scrambled eggs dish way too expensive? Yes. But for something that tasty that brought me back to my childhood in Taiwan, I would've paid any price. And they improved the spicy chicken burger, a staple of the McDonalds menu in Taiwan, which is so large it's served with a knife. There is way more chicken and the onion slaw is 100% so good. I went to 886 for lunch after hearing many good things about it. I got the Lo Ba Beng (which seems to be a specialty), which included rice, minced pork belly, two egg halves, and some greens. The main problem with this dish was that there was not much pork at all (the picture makes it seem like a decent amount but it was a very thin layer on top). And so, the dish ended up being mainly just a medium sized bowl of rice with a bit of pork and greens, and not a particularly flavorful bowl either. At least it was only $13, which wasn't too bad. The service speed was decent, but the staff were not particularly friendly or attentive (not that they did anything necessarily wrong or bad). The restaurant itself is a bit small and they have both indoor and outdoor tables. For the outdoor tables, the seats are little plastic stools, which can be a bit awkward to sit on for a whole meal- made me feel kinda like I was eating a kids meal. Overall, 886 has okay Taiwanese food with okay service. If you want something delicious to sip on, just order this and you can slowly drink your lychee beer. Bad Idea Challenge: So you get 6 seconds to finish the bowl with a second person. It's a mixture of wine, soju, sake, and red bull...sounds really gross tbh. But the challenge is pretty doable if both people commit and keep chugging. The food here is phenomenal. I really liked the Taiwanese fried chicken sandwich and it was enormous, honestly I'm still not sure how exactly you would eat it haha. Best beef noodle soup I've had in NYC so far! I particularly like the noodles since they're QQ, which means they are really chewy. Soup is well seasoned and actually has vegetables and a good portion of scallions. They don't have extra noodles on the menu, but I asked for it and they delivered a portion for a whole village. The sauce for the popcorn chicken is crack. It has some tang and spice to it that I can't quite describe. I might even buy that sauce separately?! The beef cut used is legit, and you get 3 pieces of beef, which isn't a great portion but considering it's a good cut I'd say it's fair. The sesame noodles were nothing to write home about, it's not terrible but kind of generic. The popcorn chicken was good though, without the usual full mouthful of MSG. Thigh meat is the way to go! I have been looking for Taiwanese restaurants recently since I just spent 2 years living abroad in Taiwan and was missing Taiwanese food. I ordered the Hakka Stir Fry which is a pork belly dish. It was decent but my friends ordered a chicken burger (The Notorius TFC) which I regret not taking photos of but, it was really really good. We were looking around for our large group (~13 people), when we got lucky with 886 and they had a large outdoor seating area open up. Staff was quick to rearrange the tables and chairs for us! They have a fun looking menu that immediately caught our attention; our group was drawn to "The Bad Idea" challenge - a punch bowl with Red Wine, Sake, Soju and Red Bull. 2 people have 6 seconds to finish the bowl, or if you're a single contender, you get a Boba straw to drink through instead. The Bad Idea Challenge ($25.00): Honestly super doable, as long as you and your partner commit to it! It definitely didn't seem tasty looking at the reactions of our friends, but it's a fun gimmick that I'm sure will rile up the party. As a Taiwanese, I agree with the reviews that say it's not authentic in that the sauces they used are so catered toward western palates. I'm not gonna hate and rate them horribly for that as they're in NYC and it's better to craft a taste more suitable for the general diverse public than to stick to the roots but that's that. I think the dishes all use the correct ingredients but the sauces they pair it with, absolutely awful. Way too sweet. Not spicy enough. Not herbal enough. Etc, etc. Overall, I still think it's a good place, especially if you are introducing someone to Taiwanese for the first time. What my friend and I ordered: Taiwanese sausage fried rice - pretty damn good and authentic with shacha sauce, a bit too salty though. No complaints otherwise Crispy silken tofu - aka the non-smelly version of stinky tofu. Tofu was fried perfectly and great but the damn sauce they paired it with was too sweet and not enough spice kick. Legit wished they paired it with the traditional stinky tofu sauce, would have been amazing. Popcorn chicken - not worth, not the right batter, flavor, and worst of all...the sauce. Three cup chicken - decent, would be acceptable to most ppl but not herbal enough for me. Feel like it's toned down. Beef scallion wrap - my lord...If there's one dish that they shouldn't mess up it's this one! They fucking added mayo to this?!? The fuck. All the ingredients used were fine and great but how the fuck you gonna add mayo to this. Absolutely abomination and probably my biggest gripe. Decided to come here since I've been following the owner on IG for a while and finally in NY to try! They have a few tables outside with a couple heat lamps. I loved the colorful chairs, and the decorations inside felt like we were in Taiwan. We ordered a few dishes to share. Pea shoots were super good, I'm definitely stealing this to stir fry with tofu skins. Haka stir fry was on the salty side, it has a nice kick though, wish we got beer to pair with. The gua bao was also juicy and authentic, I'll forever prefer the taiwanese version over all the other fusion version out there. Finally we have the beef hot pot, it was amazing! I had a craving for some great Taiwanese eats and I clearly came to the right spot. They offer indoor and outdoor dining. Sweet Potato Fries with Plum Powder - The extra sugar and powder on top was a little too much for me, but they nailed the fries. Honey Glazed Popcorn Chicken - I'm used to regular Taiwanese popcorn chicken but the honey added a sweetness I never realized I needed. The crunchiness of the chicken with the glaze was very good. The Notorious T.F.C. - Just as large as I had seen in the photos. While I did cut a bit off with a fork and knife, the chicken was crispy and tender. Easy to get a table, lots of outdoor seating (shaded though), and some nice soju carafes! We'd been meaning to try 886 for a while and it just so happened that the EV was conveniently located for the four of us to meet up. The staff was really accommodating and reassured me numerous times that we wouldn't have an issue getting a table midday on Saturday and that I could bring in outside dessert to celebrate our friends birthday. Everything seemed really promising as we made our way to 886 and I was excited to finally give this place a try! I only wish the staff would have been just as helpful IRL as they were on the phone. In reality, I oftentimes felt forgotten & insecure/crazy when asking for extra utensils, chopsticks, spoons, and knives. I know we ordered family style, but it's still a pandemic, so having extra utensils seems pretty basic when logistically thinking through how to dole out the food into each of our plates. I wish the food could have swayed me on the mediocre staff, but unfortunately the food didn't live up to the hype. Among the four of us, our favorite dishes were the honey glazed popcorn chicken and crispy silken tofu. I didn't see the appeal behind the hokka stir Fry even though the waitress says that's what the staff orders...coming from a salt lover i can say the average human would find the Sacha black beef extremely salty, and lastly I loved the flavor behind the Taichung noodles, but unfortunately we were hoping for more of an al dente crunch versus the soggy noddles we were served. We had a great time at 886 and I loved the company, but next time I'll try another Taiwanese restaurant in hopes of something a bit more flavorful and maybe even more authentic. read more

Dishes are somewhat bland. Beef noodle soup didn't really have a lot of flavor. Beef scallion pancake was good but a bit doughy. Waiters are pretty fast though. Didn't try the drinks but they look fun and creative (sake bombs!). The tables remind you of the tiny short tables you'd see at a night market in Taipei so it's decently authentic vibes. read more

Was inspired to check this place out because I saw a video on TikTok that the TFC is dredged in sweet potato starch. I invited my friend who eats gluten-free because he usually cannot eat fried chicken due to gluten allergy. The server informed us that even without the bun, there is also soy/sauce in this dish so it's not truly gluten-free but can be enjoyed depending on your tolerance. The chicken itself was a decent size to be split as a snack for 2. The pickled daikon helps break up the richness of the fried chicken. Dipping sauce gave a little spice kick.
