I visited 886 on a Saturday night and had a horrible experience. I was seated at 7pm and after 90 mins I still did not receive my entree, which was supposed to be a beef noodle soup that I was really looking forward to. During that time of waiting 90 mins for my food, the staff was incredibly rude and unresponsive. I requested a different table because my table was next to the bathroom but I could not be moved, and I also requested an accommodation for the freezing temperature in the restaurant, which I also wasn't accommodated for. So there I was, sitting next to the bathroom, cold, hungry and waiting for my food for over 90 mins. Finally a waiter came by to deliver the appetizer of honey glazed popcorn chicken, which was really good and sweet and salty, and i had to ask the staff to check on my soup entree. Unfortunately, the staff told me that the kitchen was very backed up and they had no idea when my food would be ready. At this point, I was extremely frustrated and starving so I cancelled my order and left. No solutions, accommodations, or apologies were offered to me. It was incredibly frustrating from a customer experience perspective, especially because I was really looking forward ti eating here. Eat here and you will feel automatically transported to an actual Taiwan night market, especially if you pick their outdoor seating. The heated outdoor area felt perfectly enclosed and quiet. Neon lights emanate cool tones everywhere, and don't get me started on those tables! Those wooden folding tables are ICONIC. With my group picking at each of the dishes with our chopsticks on this table, I felt such family vibes! The Bad Idea Challenge ($25) didn't have to be a bad idea. We drank it calmly on its own, although I wouldn't recommend it as it didn't taste like anything. Mixing Guava Juice ($3) with Soju ($20) can be a good mix, but the Guava Juice felt too watered down to have any flavor. What I DO recommend is their Flavored Beer ($8). The Lychee Beer was a fan favorite: AMAZINGLY sweet, fruity with a fragrant lychee taste. Get their Pineapple Beer if you still want to feel like you're drinking beer. Their Scallion Pancake Beef Wrap ($13) tasted standard, with sadly 2 of the pieces having less meat. The Fly's Head ($14) and Hakka Stir Fry ($14) are a must-try from me, for how flavorful they were. I like the Fly's Head especially for being unlike anything I usually order. The garlic, black bean, and chili are bound to wake up your taste buds! You will most likely need a rice bowl with them though to calm the saltiness down. The Three Cup Chicken ($16) was expensive for what it was, and the Honey Glazed Popcorn Chicken ($12) was too sweet. If anything, that fried Thai basil was yummy! But, what deserves a paragraph on its own is The Notorious T.F.C ($15)! Notorious is right, and I'm so happy it lived up to my hype. The meat was not only insanely HUGE but it was wonderfully juicy. If all fried chicken tastes like that in Taiwan, they sure know how to make a good fried chicken! Service was so friendly! Banging food! Never disappointed when I come eat in St. Marks and 886 hit the mark. The vibes here are vibrant and eclectic. The plastic chairs they have remind me of restaurants in Asia- 886 is authentic for that. Art along the walls were super cool, kudos to the artist. Staff and service were dope. For sure will be coming back. Honey glazed popcorn chicken was sweet, tangy and crispy. Each bite was filled with honey and crunch- chicken was also cooked nicely. Scallion pancake beef wraps were good. Scallion pancakes pair well with pretty much anything, it's a good base. Beef was good but I could have done without the cucumber. You DEFINITELY have to check out 886 for a meal! 886 has cool vibes and great food. The restaurant is also located on the same street as a few yummy dessert places that you could stop by after your meal. There are three dishes on 886's menu that you have to try. The first is their Lo Ba Beng, which is a rice dish with pork and bamboo, it also comes with white radish as a side dish. The second is their beef noodle soup, the soup is a little on the saltier side, but it was very flavorful. Then, my third recommendation is their popcorn chicken. The chicken is glazed with a sweet, delicious sauce and is very tender on the inside while crispy on the outside. I definitely recommend ordering a few dishes and sharing with your friends so that you can try a little bit of everything. Overall, my experience at 886 was amazing! When my friends outside the city ask me for a restaurant recommendation, 886 is one of the first ones that comes to my mind, I highly, highly recommend it. Their food is so good - my favorites are the sesame noodles, fried chicken burger and popcorn chicken. Sesame noodles: The sauce is perfection, and I love the chewy texture of the noodles! The cucumbers and egg pairs perfectly with this dish, and despite being a meat lover, I would happily eat these noodles everyday. Fried chicken burger: First of all, the chicken is HUGE. It's also seasoned and fried to perfection, so juicy and so much flavor. I love the pickled radish it comes with, and even though it's a burger, I always ditch the bread to eat more chicken LOL Popcorn chicken: What makes this special is their honey glaze, it goes so well with the chicken and mixed together with their fried basil - delicious. Seriously can't get enough! I do have one complaint though, we ordered their seasonal hot pot and it was not good. The soup wasn't flavourful, and for $50 it only came with 3 pieces of beef. I actually went on a weekday when they just opened. Really love the decor of the shop. But what I really love is their beef noodle soup and it totally lives up to its hype. The soup was so flavorful, it's not overwhelmingly spicy, just a bit of a kick and you can taste anything. I almost drank the entire bowl. The beef is so tender yet so flavorful and not mush. You'd be surprised at how many beef noodle places can actually screw up on the beef, either too hard or too mushy, 886 gets it just right. I've been sorely disappointed by all the subpar beef noodle soup joints in Manhattan, but 886 has revived my faith in this borough. The soup had so much beefy depth, a result of them boiling down a pile of oxtail bones. The beef itself was very tender and flavorful. It was an all-around fantastic beef noodle soup, and probably the best I've had in the city so far. Warning: This was a massive portion, so if you want to try literally anything else on the menu, you should share this with a person or two. The oyster omelette arrived buried in scallions and fried onions, to which I say, "Dear god why?" There were also too many bean sprouts in the omelette itself. Decent flavor but definitely skippable. Awesome food and a cool vibe! I don't know anything about Taiwanese food, but everything I had was delicious. I had the sausage starter, which was very juicy and came with a funky chive/garlic sauce, and the Hakka stir-fry, which was a great mix of pork belly, chile, and fermented black bean. The Taiwan Beer was nice too, very refreshing. We went on a Saturday night around 6 and our party of three was seated right away. My only complaint is that the space is quite cramped even for NYC, and the seats are just stools so there wasn't anywhere to put our coats. The scallion pancake beef wrap was definitely the star if the show and hands down my favorite dish I had, 5/5!! Rating 3.5 * As a Taiwanese girl I'm always excited to try Taiwanese restaurants; however, most of them never truly hit the authenticity level I'm searching for. And unfortunately that was partly how 886 was for me. I arrived with a friend on a Saturday night around 7 PM - there was around a 40 minute wait but we were notified by phone once the table was available. The space of the restaurant is pretty narrow with a smattering of seats scattered around. The space was pretty dark and noisy but gave a great grungy St Marks feel. My friend and I ordered an apple sidra each as well sake. The Apple sidra has always been one of my favorite drinks so I throughly enjoyed it a lot , the sake however was a great disappointment. It tasted so watered down - I couldn't even finish it. For our main course we ordered: --OYSTER PANCAKE: oyster pancake is without a doubt my favorite Taiwanese snack so I always judge it with high standards and unfortunately this one did not meet them at all. The taste of the pancake was pretty bland - it just had a very strong egg taste with the sweet chili sauce. There was also a lot of bean sprouts in there which did not add much compared to the usual greens you find with it. The bean sprouts also tasted like there was a lot of vinegar-y taste so just did not work well. But it tried to compensate with way too much fried onions and green scallions which again did not work. --HAKA STIR FRY: The flavor of the dish was a little bit on the saltier side and was almost well crafted if it wasn't for the lack of squid which is usually found in it. However due to the slight excess of salt it went well with the white rice. --BEEF NOODLE SOUP: Really liked the broth with the noodles. The noodles were well cooked and a great combo with the soup. There were some thick cuts of beef that were surprisingly tender and the Bok Choy that came with it. However, I was hoping there would be some pickled veggies that it usually comes with. Additionally, I'm so used to eating beef noodle soup with white vinegar but there wasn't any available when I asked the waitress?? Which was very strange and disappointing. Maybe it's because of all the hype, but I was a little disappointed by this place if I'm being honest. We were placed at a tiny table right by the door for three people which was a little cramped and uncomfortable - a minor complaint as I know it's a kind of casual night market-style place. More importantly was the food, which I found to be pretty inauthentic, especially for the two main signature Taiwanese dishes - the beef noodle soup and the lo ba beng. Obviously the restaurant is very modernized and fusion-esque, but I felt at least these two classics should be treated more properly. Although to be fair now that I think about it, I don't think I've had Taiwanese food in NYC that's blown me away yet. All in all the food was still tasty and I will say that it is a very vibey and cute spot right in the middle of St Marks, so perfect for pre-going out or if you get hungry late on the weekends. read more

I shared a few things with one other person in our group and got to try some really great dishes. Started off with the Scallion Pancake Beef Wrap which might have been my favorite thing we had actually, the szedaddy mayo was great! Next we had the Notorious TFC, which is a spicy fried chicken sandwich. The chicken patty is so huge though, to call it a sandwich is almost comical lol. We joined the waitlist on yelp and arrived when we got the text, which was a very smooth process. We started with the sausage party and the spicy dumplings. The sausage party comes with sticky rice but is surrounded with sausage casing, which was unique. Also I'm a sucker for Taiwanese sausage so no complaints there. The spicy dumplings lived up to their name. We have a high spice tolerance but definitely needed some water after. Well worth it! The three cup chicken was sooo good. The meat was so tender, it fell off the bone. And they got the sauce down, which is not an easy task! Be aware it doesn't come with rice, you have to order it separately. I freakin love Taiwanese food!!! Last time I was in NYC, I had a horrific experience at another Taiwanese restaurant. However, 886 is a completely different story. Came in on a rainy afternoon and we were seated immediately. The service was extremely fast. Our waiter was a tall asian guy. I'm not sure what his name was, but he was extremely hospitable! He was always well mannered and served us promptly, always had a smile on. Great customer service doesn't always come around often these days, so I appreciated that a lot. In terms of the food, we ordered the lo ba beng, sausage party, savory soy milk, honey popcorn chicken, and a bottle of Taiwan beer. I really have nothing bad to say about anything that we ate. Everything was fantastic! I think the restaurant does a great job of putting their own American twist to traditional Taiwanese dishes without losing its authenticity. Also love that they have Taiwan beer. It's a classic in Taiwan and always paired with anything savory. Since it's light, it goes really well with heavier flavors. If I had to highlight my favorite dish, I have to give it to the lo ba beng. That pork was sooo soft and fatty. The juices from the meat paired with the rice was absolutely delicious. Great job 886! I never find any Taiwanese places and when I saw 886, I was really excited to try. I am picky with my Taiwanese food as I am Taiwanese but the reviews looked promising so I went in! We ordered the popcorn chicken with the honey Szechuan sauce ; this was really yummy! The chicken was large chunks and crispy on the outside & tender and juicy on the inside. The sauce was a surprisingly yummy addition to it. We also ordered sesame noodles and beef noodle soup. Sesame noodles were okay, I think the sauce was a bit overshot but overall not bad. The beef noodle soup I would give 3/5 ; I think the broth itself was a bit too sour; it felt like I was drinking the sour vegetables (suan cai) soup instead of beef noodle soup. I'm a little disappointed with my experience at 886. My son and I were psyched to try them out. Earlier this year, I received my first Yelp Elite swag bag (in a loooong time) that included some Sze Daddy Taiwanese chili sauce. We were running low because my son is a condiment beast, so we decided to look up where we could buy more. My son searched and found that it can be purchased at 886 so naturally, I Yelped the restaurant to see what else they offered and was immediately awestruck by some of the foodie pics. We decided to take a trip to LES for some apps, soju and chili sauce. We reached the restaurant a couple of minutes before they opened and the vibe was a bit off-putting. The guy that opened up shop and ultimately became our server, Ian, took off the signage on the door that said they were closed until 5p. He legit, took down the sign and walked away. He didn't open the door or even let us know the door was open, he didn't say hello, he didn't say they were open, or anything. He just walked away. My son and I looked at each other like, okaaaaay... We waited another minute or two and saw the employees inside just kind of looking at each other. I finally checked the door to see if it was actually open, which it was, started to walk in and asked a female staffer whether or not they were open. She reluctantly said yes and then seated us in the rear of the restaurant. It almost felt as though they were upset to have customers. We did not feel welcome at all. I overheard her saying that they should just shut down the kitchen and refuse patrons to sit inside. I'm unsure if it was because of the gloomy weather and the obvious lack of space they would have for the night, but in any case, patrons of an establishment should not be hearing that. It's unprofessional. We decided to suck it up and stay, and ordered some of their popcorn chicken, scallion pancake beef roll soju, lychee beer and some plain white rice (for me). Honey glazed popcorn chicken was really good. It had a great deal of black pepper which really compliments fried chicken. It reminded me of my mother's. I even found a piece of fried chicken skin that was really good. The sauce was ok. I would have probably preferred it on the side so I could adjust how much was on each piece of chicken I ate. Scallion pancake beef roll was good also. The sze daddy mayo is fire. It was tangy with a kick, but I wish the roll had more filling. They cut it into four pieces and the filling to wrap ratio could have been better the filling was only in the middle and half of the wrap was basically empty. Guava soju was meh...the Yelp pics looked promising but it did not taste that great. They also undeserved our carafe as you can clearly see in my posted pic. The Lychee beer tasted way better and we bought a few cans to go. I guess the employees' demeanor improved some when a couple more patrons came in to dine, but first impressions mean the most to me and I can't ignore feeling like we should have just got the chili sauce and left. Great spot for drinks and din! I checked Yelp before arriving and knew that the notorious TFC has pretty high reviews so I opted for it as my main. I ended up cutting the perimeter of the chicken and eating it with my chopsticks. I was so full by the time the sandwich was trimmed down to a normal size and didn't eat much of the bun. The white things were PHENOMENAL, as was the sauce. I also had popcorn chicken and cucumber salad for the table. I'd say skip the popcorn chicken and get TFC since it has more flavor if possible... but the chicken was also awesome. The cucumber salad was pretty standard but had a nice fresh zing to it. The people I came with didn't enjoy their entrees as much as I did, citing that it was too noodle-y or too much rice.. but I had an awesome meal. We got two carafes of guava soju and it was AWESOME! Service is super nice. The hostess was very friendly and she called me by my name so I felt super valued. We got lychee bomb, chicken sandwich, oyster omelette, sausage party, and the Lo ba beng. They all tasted soooooo good. Lychee bomb - 4/5 super easy to drink, super tasty but it costed $13.......... Chicken sandwich - 4/5 great size of chicken, very flavorful. Only complaint is the bottom bun is soggy from the oil/ sauce. Oyster omelette- 4/5 oyster taste good but the overall taste is a little dull even with the red sauce. Their food is very spicy especially this one Sausage party - 4/5 $8, the cheapest item on our order but the tastiest. Only complaint is the sauce in the middle is very short so after two bites, there's pretty much the sticky rice sausage left. Lo ba beng - 4/5 very tasty and good portion size. But almost 90% of it is completely fat. Very guilty and if you don't like the texture of fat, it's not gonna be pleasant. Very flavorful tho. I think their food is generally pretty spicy. The omelette and chicken sandwich got me struggling a little bit but they are all very tasty and flavorful. However, my bill end up being $80 with tips and tax, a little bit on the pricier size. When you compare it to actual Taiwan price for these food, it's a pain to think about. read more

Really loved the food and the vibes here! Small tables, would be difficult with big groups but the decor is really fun with pink neon lights and hanging umbrellas in the back We went on a Thursday a little earlier and got seated really quickly! The popcorn chicken was absolutely killed it for me, it had such an interesting flavor with all the spices and was nice and crispy Also really impressed with the Lo Ba Beng, pork belly was so juicy and and mixed well with the rice. It's obvious this place is extremely racist. The staff was comprised of two white women and one Asian man. The restaurant was full of Asians except myself and my two friends (who were white Hispanic men ). After ordering our food, we were asked while eating our meal if we were "finished" and "wanted the rest to go." Mind you, I had to swallow my food to answer the awkward Asain waiter, who then proceeded to "toss" my check on the table with the drink we ordered while we were eating. His behavior and gestures were noticeably angry and disturbing, and I felt totally embarrassed and ashamed. It dont matter if the food is good or bad, that kind of racist behavior is unexceptable. Notice to the owner and staff, if you don't want anybody but Asians eating in your establishment, you should make it private so you don't have to rush Spanish people out. With so many mediocre restaurants popping up in the East Village, I didn't think much coming to 886. My wallet was ready to be trimmed down and my tastebud disappointed yet again. That being said, this restaurant appealed to me at the time because I didn't want to venture far from my home to get some Taiwanese food. Upon arriving at the restaurant, it had all the bells and whistles of another hip East Village restaurant taking their spin on traditional cuisines with a "twist". I was glad that I was wrong that time around. They started strong with Honey Glazed Popcorn Chicken and it was delicious; in fact, I liked it so much that I would recommend it to be a must-have appetizer. The Lo Ba Beng took the spotlight with its harmonious combination of flavors...make sure you give it a good stir! I feel that Hakka Stir Fry was good, but it's a different story when it is hanging around with the other food mentioned. I also speculate that having Asian cooks in the kitchen might contribute to how the food turned out so good. Lastly, I wish to see 886 here to stay and other "hip"/"modern" East Village restaurants to take notes. Good job 886! read more

Came here on a Sunday night with a few friends. Food was really good and service was great too! Loved sitting outdoors on the plastic stool like chairs - food and ambiance reminded me of being in Taiwan with the street vendors. We also did the Bad Idea Challenge which was super fun - you have to drink a bowl of mixed alcohols through straws in less than 7 seconds (2 people can share the challenge with 2 straws or 1 person can do it alone with a boba straw) - your prize is more alcohol (2 sake bombs)! Even though we didn't quite complete it in 7 seconds - we were close to completing the challenge by maybe like a sip of alcohol left - they still brought us glasses of sake on the house which was nice! read more

886 is a nod to Taiwanese heritage with the desire to be contemporary. I've been here for lunch and the second time for late-night drinks. It feels suitable for both, but make sure your party is small like 4 people and under because there's not a lot of room. Waitstaff are nice and check in frequently. Being right in the middle of St. Marks Place, this was a fantastic place to catch up with friends while avoiding the even more crowded setting of somewhere like Kenka. I so want to like this place because I am Taiwanese, and their small plates are great for sharing, paired with abundant drinks (recommend getting the guava or lychee carafe). However, I have to remove a star because my friends and were disappointed with some of the spins on traditional dishes. The Taiwanese sausage was nowhere near the smoky quality that I miss at home, and was also disappointed to find the beef scallion pancake had added some creamy salad? I hope the recipe changes for those items, I feel like there's not many places in the city that offers Taiwanese cooking so it's sad to find some classics disrupted too much that it's not really Taiwanese anymore. On the bright side, everything is plated incredibly well and there is clear care in presentation, even in the bathroom. Would recommend with hesitation, but want to support this business and hope it improves. read more
