I step into this discount store every week or so because I need something and remember 99 Cent Dreams has it for a fraction of the price that I'd pay at Duane Reade/Walgreens/Staples/Amazon. There is a wide variety of things in this store and I almost always get a good deal on something. Unless it's a brand I know and trust, I don't expect the best quality. When I buy snacks (granola bars, pretzels, candy)I always check for an expiration date. I've never bought or seen anything rotten so I buy a lot of school supplies here (glue, dry eraser markers, notebooks, scissors, workbooks), gift bags, party supplies, goody bag toys, arts & crafts supplies, packing tape, coffee mugs, seasonal and holiday decorations (Halloween, Easter, Christmas, etc.) Staff is always very nice. A $0.99 store in midtown? How awesome? I went into the store for materials for a DIY project I am working on and while I was not able to find all the elements I was looking for, what I found was close enough. The mugs here are decent. 15 balloons cost $1.29 and I got a pair of 2016 glasses for $1.29. That's a crazy because last year I got a similar 2015 pair for $5 after negotiating the price down with a vendor and that was only two blocks away. I would also recommend the store for basic sewing supplies, back to school supplies and gift bags. The store is huge and has two floors (a ground level and a down stairs section). The main difference between the floors is that the lower floor has more "guy" stuff. It has tools and electronics... The overall feel of the store in that it is a bit dusty, but I can live with that. For the price, I will dust things off later. Credit cards accepted for purchase over $10. Next time I host a party, I will know where to go for initial look at supplies. read more

Amazing selection. An over the top-varied selection of colorful everything. The buyers have great taste, stocking the store with beautiful and useful items. I love the office supplies section the best. A treasure trove of every kind of notebook, folder, and pen you can imagine. Downstairs, you'll find anything you'd ever need for you house. Full length mirror, attractive bins, laundry bags and all sizes of patterned bags for shopping. The only advice I will offer is go early in the day. The staff works long, hard hours. Things can get pretty intense near closing time, which though officially at 8 pm, can begin as early as 7:30, with, what on a bad day could be called harassment. read more

Love browsing this place during my lunch break. Cheaper than amazon and even Jack's World on many items. It's good place to get housewares since we are all transient anyway. Do I really need fancy high end goods? Plates, cups, pots and pans that will do the job for a short while before I move to my next spot. The food is a bit sketchy, it's funny to see Halloween candy when Xmas is around the corner, but really the food is still good. read more

Had exactly what I was looking 4! Be aware the older Gentleman who blows up balloons takes his time. He took over 10 mins to blow up 6 balloons. so if your in a rush I recommend paying for balloons first then shop around the store hopefully that makes a difference. read more

No matter how much you try to beat around the..ahem.."bush", the fact is that money is kind of tight for a lot of us nowadays. Add that realization to the fact that I'm still in the sticker shock stage when it comes to grocery shopping in NYC and you may begin to understand why I am thrilled to find a place like $.99 Dreams. Aside from the rather grandiose title and lax application of the 99 cent rule, I've found that this store may eliminate much wailing and gnashing of teeth when it comes to securing the basic accouterments needed to live. I'm talking yer basic housewares and such. You can get just about anything you need here. It really is pretty amazing what you'll find. The food selection is nothing to sneeze at(especially when you have the freaking bubonic plague like I do currently). You could do fairly well stocking up on the staples here. It's hella(as the kids say) convenient to work for me so I'm stoked as all get out. Of course YOU won't find the organic, free range broccoli here but people like YOU are too good to shop at dollar stores. yep read more

You can't expect much for a $1.29 which is average price paid. I come here all the time for little things, generic cleaning supplies, disposables, wrapping paper, and etc. I came here recently to buy supplies for a party 40 ppl. Bought 16/12oz cups, 6oz wine cups, shot cups, napkins, plates, utensils. Grand total, drum roll......$20 I think this was amazing at 1/3 the cost at a grocery store in manhattan. Shop here, just don't expect too much out of the product. read more

While I was walking past 99 Cent Dreams, I was wondering whether this was an old time Times Square sex shop because of it's prominent neon sign on it's front window and name. Luckily the neighborhood isn't being degraded before my eyes and it's indeed a 99 cent store in an area with only one other that I could think of. 99 Cent Dreams contains all the Made in China stuff you'll find at other 99 Cent stores. It is two-levels, one on the street and one in the basement. They were renovating the top floor when I visited for a rather large expansion. I was rather satified with their selection of goods, however, their food section was noticably not as extensive as Jack's World on 32nd Street. The street level part of the store is a bit grungy, but the basement level is cleaner and better organized. Another big plus is that whenever I'm there, I never see a huge crowd, like at Jacks, which enhances the shopping experience. 99 Cent Dreams is a nice change of pace in the Cheap Guy's book! read more

This place is pretty disorganized and not very clean....it's huge with two floors and it's PACKED. What do you expect? It's not a CVS, it's a dollar store! I will say that the appearance may turn someone away as well as some really dated items (glasses and place mats that my grandmother used at some point and I haven't seen since the 80's) but its a great store nonetheless. It gets the job done and has an impressive array of kitchen appliances (think cutting boards, juicers, dish rags etc) and other household items that are actually the right quality. What would I skip here, batteries, anything health and beauty or food. If you aren't looking for great customer service and you have some time to sift through this store, you won't disappointed as long as your expectations aren't too high. And yes, their prices are lower than Jack's on many accounts. read more

I think the name is changed to "5th Avenue Discount Store - where everything is $1 and up." They should reconsider sticking with 99 Cent Dreams, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of charging items for more than $1. I haven't had the issue of finding something for more than $1 yet. This store is a gem found in the heart of Midtown, where I can successfully find last minute supplies for my weekend events. I've gone twice and found a white paper tablecloth and white & blue balloons that I've needed. A kind man eating a granola bar directed me to the balloons section, but I had to ask a stranger to get one from way high-up. Cashiers are not friendly and keep to themselves, but I guess there's no need to linger. Great find! read more

This midtown dollar store has a wide selection of random home goods like kitchen tools and shower curtains, stationery, party supplies, hardware, crafts supplies, groceries and minimart essentials such as batteries. Sometimes they have incredible deals on about-to-expire brand name food like larabars. Most of the time they carry brands you have never heard of and probably imported from Mexico or someplace like that. Quality can be hit or miss. Almost always the prices can't be beat. Always worth a quick browse if in the neighborhood. read more

A large selection of brand name household items at low prices. The good stuff, not some crazy off-brand you've never heard of. It reminded me of National Wholesale Liquidators on Broadway near Houston which I still miss very much since it closed. Better than Jack's 99 Cent Store near Penn Station because the crowd is smaller and a lot less manic. One thing: the name of the store should be changed to $1.29 Dreams because that's what most of this stuff costs. read more

this is a really nice dollar store it's two floors, one for the normal "dollar store" stock, and the basement for small appliances, furniture, and decor. the basement is more of a bargain basement, not a dollar store, and the prices are pretty good. i bought my favourite mugs of all time from the basement and they're still with me after 10+ moves the upstairs section has a huge selection of hair accessories, stationary, cables, and cookware. there's also a bin that carries baked goods but i would never dare buy a roll from a dirty dollar store its kind of a weird area because there are three dollar stores on 45th to 46th st, 5th to 6th ave, so if you ever need one you can definitely find all your dollar merch in this area read more

God forbid that you buy something faulty, they will argue down that it is impossible (for example christmas lights, part of the strand did not light ), or that the package is open (I bought the wrong size of iron board cover and the package was not sealed to start with) or imply that you did it, it's practically impossible to return anything. This stops me from buying appliances from them but , they have everything else and at such bargain price that it is worth taking the loss and continue shopping there. (for example usb cable for 1.29 $ instead if 25$ at stapes)I still love this store , a life saver in midtown, I buy everything I can there.. I don't think Jack is better. Personally I go to 99c dream regularly when I drop in at Jack's once in a while. I would think they complete each other. read more

My go-to dollar store during lunch time for cheap stuff - baking trays/pans, cookie jars, spices, aluminum foil, disposable cups/plates/cutlery etc. I also bought a shoe and bags organizer for my wardrobe - very useful! They have 2 floors of goods and you are able to find most things here. I'm not sure about their food food items, but try them at your own risks - no pain no gain? read more

I love 99 cent stores. I used to go to 99 Cent Dreams a little more often when I went to College in the area years ago. They definitely did change the main floor and they seem to have a lot more merchandise now. As another Yelper mentioned, you probably can find anything you are looking for. I loved that the register lines were so short too and the store wasn't overly crowded. read more

This place has everything, even fresh bread. Selection is great, and you cannot beat these prices. While I do believe that not everything should be purchased at a 99 cent store, there are some things you shouldn't pay more than a dollar for. I bought a broom advertised for $1.29 and when the clerk asked me for the price, I told her and she proceded to punch $1.59 into the register for no reason. Then after talking to her manager, she conceded that she was wrong and punched $.30 into the register. I assumed it was a deduction, but she actually added an additional $.30 to my tab! The store is filthy with many expired items. The Jacks around the corner is cleaner with admittedly items close to end of shelf life but better priced and sanitary. That being said there are good prices on bath soap and brown soap which could be used for hand washing some clothes. Otherwise I would not patronize. The imitation Ziploc although very economical are sub par. My Advice: Please clean the store. read more
