I love 99 Ranch and will always regularly shop here but gosh I wish some of the things here could be improved. For one, why do their self check out machines work so horribly? I wonder if management just went with the cheapest possible models and well, you get what you pay for. The machines are very sensitive so if you try to put the packing bags you brought onto loading area of the machine, the machine loses its mind and won't let you ring up anything and this stupid alert won't go away unless a human comes by to fix it. Every single time I come to this 99 Ranch, I am fighting with this stupid machine. So much for automation taking away jobs, cuz the woman working these self check out area was working overtime, the poor lady. I am deducting two stars here because this is sooo friggin' annoying. I like wanna pull out my hair when doing this self check out. But beyond that very annoying self check out experience, this Asian grocery which carries many Chinese & Taiwanese specialties is a go to favorite for me. I love their ready made items including all kinds of zhongzis (Taiwanese, Shanghainese, Cantonese, etc.), they carry all kinds of baos, all kinds of ready made Chinese dishes like pig ear, tripe, bamboo shoots, etc. (IYKYK). I spend a lot of time here cuz Im always looking at all the different things they carry especially hot and popular items. Today, I was in here for about 30 min just looking at all the different mooncakes on offer! There are rows and rows of mooncakes from Taiwan, Hong Kong, China , etc. for purchase! I needed the infamous Five Spice Powder. This was a staple in our house growing up, and my dad used it in a lot of dishes. One year, I didn't have pumpkin pie spice and he said, use this. I'm telling you, that pumpkin cheesecake was a big hit! So you can see how versatile it can be. Found it and it's the real deal...very old school! I do love 99 Ranch Market on Claremont Mesa blvd. Parking is usually a hassle, but I got here at 5 o'clock and people weren't off from work yet. They have a full bakery, which I love everything from cakes, pastries, bread, milk, bread, desserts, and other flaky pastries from sweet red bean to Taro buns. They have an assorted grab and go items from chicken baos, barbecue pork baos, smoked duck, smoked chicken, other side dishes as well. They also have a full Chinese restaurant, if you will where you can order other dishes from noodles, stirfry, other side dishes, that they make right in front of you. Fresh fish, they will fillet, clean, and even fry it for you. They also have fresh crabs, today they had Dungeness, large and small, lobster a good deal at 16 bucks a pound I believe they're from Maine, clams all sizes, Manila clams, other types of crabs as well. They also have a huge frozen section of meat, dumpling, noodles and others. Their produce section is huge everything from bok choy to various cabbages, mushrooms, and more. I like brewing hot tea when I wake up in the morning.  Often it is jasmine tea I get from 99 Ranch.  It's economical and I like the light jasmine flavor.  This is something I don't do on vacation though as I don't want to bring all my tea stuff with me.  Now I have a Umi travel tea set to try out. https://www.umiteasets.com/ I was pleasantly surprised by the Maneki Neko Lucky Cat Travel Tea Set.  My household found the Neko Lucky Cat to be the cutest tea set ever.  I liked how light the set was in it's carrying case.  My tea strainer was just the right size for the pot.  Neko Lucky Cat's paws were perfect for holding the tea pot and pouring.  While the tea set was constructed of lightweight materials it did provide good insulation.  My tea stayed hot while in the kettle.  Very cool tea drinking experience.  Next time I go on vacation I'll bring along the tea set, my tea strainer, and some tea. My kid Mari will love using the tea set next time she visits as she loves tea and Lucky Cats.  Maybe for Christmas I'll get myself one of their fancy tea sets for the house read more

I love stopping by 99 Ranch in Clairemont whenever I'm in the area. Came here to grab some papaya for homemade papaya salad. This 99 Ranch reminds me of home so badly. They have a lot of HTF items here and a huge variety of even more. It does have a seafood smell, so stay away if you're sensitive to it. They have a small food court area as well as the bakery that have yummy options. Store is overall pretty clean in my opinion and the employees work hard. read more

I didn't know where to leave my review for the 99 "food court," so I figured I might as well review the whole market. Growing up, I came here every Saturday with my family for groceries. We'd occasionally have lunch at the spot next to the baked goods section, where we always buy a couple of desserts. They give enormous portions at the end of the day - seriously, like double the normal amount. I miss the custard/red bean pancake-breads(?); I haven't seen the lady selling them in years, and I hope she's doing well. I don't know what I'd do with myself if this 99 Ranch closed. I've come to 99 several times in the past 12 years only because I don't live here. I love 99 for it's variety - produce, meats, seafood and cooked foods. Prices are fine too, not too much difference from other supermarkets. What's new (to me) on my recent visit is their self checkout counters. I'm familiar with those back home in Atlanta and thought I could skip the long lines at the 2 cashiers. To my horror, if took me over 10 mins to scan everything in my cart. I had items with barcodes - those were easy. I had items that needed barcodes and weighed, those were fine too. There are items from the produce section that needed to be looked up - those were fine too but you need to be able to differentiate the gazillion types of yams. AND THEN there were produce items that, dispite looking up, still needed a staff member to complete the job. This single staff was busy running back and forth between her counter and the 4 self checkout counters. When I waited for assistance as instructed by the machine, I looked around and saw others also waiting and looking for help. When she finally came to help me with inputting my items into the register, she had to input the product code! Something I wouldn't be able to know. That's stupid. This entire self checkout process took me over 10 mins to scan over 20 items. That was frustrating! Note to self: stand in the long line at the cashiers next time. Overall, 3 stars for their technology. The idea was great but the execution was not. Don't get me wrong, I love still this supermarket. They just need to fix their self checkout to be a little less troublesome. read more

This review is primarily directed to the hot food choices inside the 99 Ranch Market. You can get a 1, 2, or 3 item combo. I ordered a 3 item combo and asked for no rice or noodles and the lady overloaded the takeout box with huge scoops of my 2 items. All this for $10. The food was great, not overly salty or greasy, and was hot. If you are feeling like a takeout Chinese meal and don't want to wait at a sit down place, definitely consider walking in and getting a combo. As I walked out, I saw Sam Woo also has a similar offering--will have to check that out next time (guessing probably very similar pricing and options). ----TL;DR---- Pros: quick, reasonable price, hot food and good variety to choose from. ***This review is for restroom use only*** It was late Saturday evening. My daughters and I had left the La Jolla area. On our way back to the resort, we were looking for a store or restaurant with a restroom that was still open at the time. We found this 99 Ranch Market. Luckily, it was still open. It was near closing time though. There weren't a lot of people. We quickly walked in, used the women's room, and walked out. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. We did walk around the store for a little bit just to see what they have. They pretty much have the standard meat, seafood, and produce sections. I love their frozen fish balls... perfect for hot pot! I find it interesting that this 99 Ranch sells flowers. I don't recall any other 99 Ranch that I've been to sells flowers. Anyway, I didn't buy anything since we were leaving town the next day. Thank you 99 Ranch for the use of your facilities! We'll offer our support and patronage the next time we're in your area. This place is always busy, as it should be since they have a variety of products from fresh produce, seafood, cookware, and non-perishable imported goods. The prices here are great too, and they often have items on sale/reduced price. You've also got to love the bakery, hot foods, and restaurants that are located within this building. Upon entering, it's not the cleanest place. I took my friend here one time and it was a little embarrassing. My friend couldn't stand the smell of this place... There's this smell, but probably because they have live fish. Not all stores I've been to have that though. The aisles are crowded. The cash register area which is right where the entrance and exit is, is also crowded. Sometimes the floor is just a mess and sticky. They had food sample stalls set up in between aisles which also crowded the store. Everything is quite packed and busy. They have dead bamboo plants hidden right underneath the live plants. That just seems ominous. I forgot to get a shopping cart, thinking I didn't need one at first since I wanted to make a quick trip, which ended up being an extremely arduous process. Then, I had to go all the way to the entrance/exit to get a shopping cart and was looked at by the security again. Carts were also not that clean. The whole place just seems like a market you would see in a rural area. Not trying to put down rural areas. Just saying the layout could be better. The deals are pretty decent (for certain items), but I prefer the other location in Balboa much more. The service here is just absolutely terrible. They don't bother to improve. That's one thing. If you go into the aisles looking for something, good luck! Sometimes they don't speak Chinese nor English or they simply don't want to talk to you. I don't know what they speak and sometimes they don't even know the items in their own store. It's like you're bothering them when asking a location of an item. I've been coming here for years now since I was a college student. I definitely don't come here because the service is great, but I come here because they have particular seasonings that I cook with. Zion and Hmart have much better service, so I've been going to other Asian supermarkets instead as things seem like they keep declining here. THE REASON WHY I AM WRITING THIS REVIEW is because of my last visit at this store (7/26/25). I have been here several times with friends and family who use EBT cards. They all feel discriminated here. If this store trains their employees to discriminate customers based off of socioeconomic status, race, gender, etc then I really am utterly speechless in this day and age. It should be a seamless process to use whatever payment method you prefer. Not a "let's hold up the line and let everyone know how poor you are" kind of situation every damn time they shop here. My friends and family should not feel ashamed. I'm extremely disappointed at this location and their employees. I was frustrated this time for the last straw and was finally helped by a higher level employee that knew what she was doing and could sense my frustration. We're all paying customers at the end of the day. If they don't want that form of payment then don't accept it in the first place. This place is twice the size of Mitsawa Market Place. It's a large Asian grocery store with a few additional stores inside; jewelry, an optometrist, and a souvenir-style store with Asian Nic-naks. There is a cafeteria style restaurant similar to the set up you'd see at Panda Bear Express with 1, 2, and 3 item plates. The food here is delicious and fresh. They have some variety (check out the picture). The wife and I each ordered one item plates. We both got noodles as our side and we really like the bok Choy here. For a side, we got their chili oil dumplings to share. Serving sizes are more than enough, we each had leftovers. The Grocery store has the same departments you'd expect at any other store; bakery, grocery, seafood, and meat. Service is great. The employees here are super nice. I am the worst with accents, but I needed help and the lady stuck with me till I understood LOL. 99 Ranch is a nice place to visit for groceries; it's clean and organized. When I went around 6 p.m., it wasn't busy. However, I don't recommend the prepared food, as it upset my stomach. I tried rice, noodles, pumpkin with pork, and crispy shrimp, which tasted good (shrimp) but I'm unsure how fresh it was, as it could have been leftovers. I was just hungry and needed something for dinner. The restroom was okay--I'm glad they have one, but it could use more cleaning. Growing up coming to this super market, it is still one of my favorite Asian markets to go and shop at. There are TONs of deals weekly, and such a large variety of anything you could want or need. Anything from home goods, hot and ready to go foods, to a full seafood and meat counter. Produce is always in stock, and there are so many different snacks to pick up any time of the year. The hot food deli during lunch is a very good. The lunch food comes out fresh around 11am, and by noon the huge line forms and is probably the best time to get the freshest and most variety of sides. You have your option of ordering combos with 1,2, or 3 sides for a modest price, or you can buy individual sizes by weight. There is always a deal of the day - for example Wednesdays is 2 slices of pork chop over rice for about $8. At about 1pm onwards, the food starts looking a bit dry and old since there isn't as much turn over. I wouldn't expect it to taste as good, but food is food. Their bowls that say 'made at 10am, discard at 1pm' etc is a lie - they simply remove the stickers and reapply new ones. Be smart and don't believe what it says. Around evening hours, they will start discounting these meals and you can have a pretty huge feast with leftovers. read more

The main purpose I go to this 99 ranch market is because of these female smelt with eggs. But everytime I buy these, more than 50% are just plain smelt and do not have eggs. I paid for the price of the female smelt with eggs and it is so unfair if I dont get what I paid for. Years ago, these were.placed outside on top of ice where people can pick and choose themselves. Nowadays, the workers scoop them up according to how many pounds you want. I wish they would be placed outside again where customers can pick and choose the fishes they want. read more

I seldom give a review to a grocery store but feel a need to do so for this one. This is not a review of all 99 Ranch (99 ranch are wonderful places for Asian groceries) but only a review for this place, especially one male receptionist there. I saw him twice when checking out and for both times, he called me "beautiful" with "smiles" which he may think good but which I consider as harassment and offense. It is possible that he call other young ladies "beautiful" or only recognize me and call me this. However, in either case, I feel it very offensive and insulting. Because of this receptionist, I am hesitant to return this place and prefer the other 99 ranch in SD. read more

Not a bad 99 Ranch, definitely a bit smaller than some of the other SoCal locations that I've been to, especially the parking lot which was super busy on a Saturday afternoon (shared business plaza) and compact parking, but you can probably find a spot in the back. Definitely much more lively and cleaner than say the Rowland Heights or Hacienda Heights location with the OO Tea (Wushiland Boba) and other restaurants. LOVED that they had wheel cake there, though a bit sad that they didn't have mung bean (maybe too Vietnamese of a flavor). Either way it's an alright place to go! read more
