Tasty breakfast experience this morning. We were looking for something new, and as we are new to the general area, so where did we go??? To Yelp of course! found the 9th street cafe and saw that it was supposed to be small town diner fare. The menu featured some nice touches with local meats and multiple omelette options. We settled on french toast, biscuits and gravy, and the smothered hash browns. All were quite tasty and very large portions. far too much for myself or my wife to finish. It was a nice small town atmosphere with tasty typical american breakfast food. you can go wrong. read more

I can't believe it's been 8 years since I wrote the first review here in 2010! It's still just as busy as ever with daily lunch specials including the still-great chopped chicken salad that I still love--and a lot of the SAME waitstaff. Massive breakfast plates but I prefer Bob Evans sage sausage to the Korte product they serve, but their bacon is still tasty and their omelettes are huge and stuffed with filling. Lunchtime burgers are some of the best and you can't go wrong here. Solid no-frills midwestern food with reasonable prices, fast friendly service and generous portions keep the tables filled and the customers coming back year after year--like I have been for nearly 9 years. read more

A great place for breakfast and lunch, serving the usual diner staples. The onion rings push them up to five stars. They are that good. There is a lot of local history tied into the decor, and that's kind of cool. The restaurant is very clean and doesn't have a greasy spoon feel at all. Amazing food! Best breakfast in the small town of highland. Farm fresh everything and the ham steak is the size of your head! Service is fast and friendly. Their bacon is good but for some reason it has changed over the years? Not the taste but the texture. I visit Highland once or twice a year and the Ninth Street cafe is a must-stop every time. It's surprising to find such a combination of great food and service in a small town. Eat here for a taste of the locally made Korte meats. Eat here for the historic newspaper clippings and props. Eat here for the house made potato chips. But definitely eat here! read more

Great place. We were waited on really quickly and received our food fast too. I had the Western omelette and the smothered hash browns. Both nicely done and great tasting. The inside looks very nice and has a great atmosphere. The table we sat at had little news clipping and papers about the town under the varnish and was very interesting to read while we waited. Would certainly eat there again. P.s. I think the bad reviews are only from people who are generally negative. read more

Been here too many times to count, it really is tasty. I prefer to call in and pick up my order, I don't like eating at the restaurant AT ALL. Loud, busy servers, etc. I usually get an omelet and always smothered hash browns. The hot wings omelet is my favorite. read more

Unless your a local don't expect to be checked on. My husband ordered a coffee and was never offered a refill. He ordered pancakes and was not given syrup. Had to ask for it. I ordered soft scrambled eggs which were served hard! Over wasn't a horrible experience but does to be pay closer attention to all the customers! Not just the ones they know personally! read more

The reason I am a regular at the 9th Street Cafe is because of two things: smoked pork chops and smothered hash browns. Every time I come into Highland, I have to come here not once, but at least twice while we are here. The deliciousness of the food is something only southern Illinois farm country can deliver. Trying to find a nice brunch location not far from the city is sometimes difficult. However, this place was just what we imagined. Our order didn't come out perfect the first time but our waitress was quick to fix it. Make sure you come hungry because the portions are by no means small. The hash browns were by far the best thing on my plate! In addition to the great food, the staff was constantly coming around to refill our coffee and to make sure it was nice and hot. I would recommend this to a friend or family member and will probably make my way over to this charming place in the future. read more

After reading reviews I pictured a small town greasy spoon big on vintage charm and big helpings of good ole American heapin helpins of yumminess. Not so much. Its a nice looking place with historic charm but the food not so good. The hash browns were the only yummy thing. Golden crispiness. The bacon flavorless thick and so chewey you might strain jaw muscles. The eggs overdone. The worst pancakes ever, Thick, dense and so dry, like 5 day old pound cake. Did someone drop in an extra cup of flour. We won't be returning. Great hashbrowns though. read more

Found this place on Yelp while traveling and working in the area. Decided on the spinach, mushroom, and swiss omelette with smothered hash browns. Food is good and portions are hearty. Hash browns are erythromycin good smothered in gravy. A little oily on the omelette, but not overpowering the flavor. Service was courteous and quick. Rich with history in a small town. This is the first time we have eaten here and I would highly recommend it to anyone as this is a must place to eat breakfast. The food is great and the portions are HUGE. I ordered the Todd's special with hash browns and ham. Let me tell you the ham is truly a ham steak as it was at least a 1/2 inch thick. It was so delicious.
