The staff is great, and the location is better than 100% of the other storage places in my hood. It's well lit at night and right across the High Street bridge from Alameda. The facility is clean and well taken care of. There are big heavy duty moving carts you can check out at the desk for free. You can see what spaces are available online. They also have a ATM type machine outside that allows you to rent a space via the machine and a webcam conference call. They run specials for new customers so look on their website for the discount code. If you rent a big space, bring a big camping lantern or flashlight because some of the spaces are not lit well from the hallway lights. read more

My experience has been good so far. My only issue I've had was that since I work normal working hours, the times I am there and need a cart, I can't use it. This would have been helpful for people who are either coming there early or late in the evening (which is what I was doing). The facility is clean and well kept. Price is about right, but I don't like the fact that in 6 months, I either have to move my stuff to another unit or pay the rate increase. This place will get you for every penny they can. Your bill escalates so read the fine print. When it was time to cancel, they told me they don't do refunds, even though my auto payment had just come out. Girl at the front desk said they require a 10 day cancellation notice. I told her I would like to do that, and get a refund for the remainder of the month, but she said they don't do refunds. When I asked why the 10 day cancellation policy if no refunds, she refused to answer. She gave me Allen McCarthy's phone number and he never returned my call. Basically, they stole 20 days rent from me, and they do this to customers all the time. The Bridge Storage is right down the street. I have used them with my parents before, and they are a MUCH better option than this place. THIEVES! read more

Excellent experience. We left furniture and storage boxes here for several months while moving/consolidating households. The staff was always friendly, efficient, and clear about charges and policies. The facilities were clean, felt secure, and, aside from an occasional bobble with a sticky elevator call button, functional. It is interesting how a couple of storage units always seemed to be in use no matter when we went in to drop off or pick up. Once we saw what I'd swear to be a picnic happening in front of one of the ground-floor lockers. But I'm not judging. read more

Moving is so stressful, that a kind touch here and there makes a big difference. Nitty gritties: Easily accessible. Gated entry with code. Wide, clean elevators with a "hold" button that makes it easy to load without the door closing on you. Free carts. Clean corridors. Water view from next to the elevator to help you destress. I have to say that from all of the self storage facilities I've had to use, this has been by far the best experience. Mark checked me in and was very informative from the get go. He asked great probing questions so I would get the best use out of this facility along with helping get the most out of my money. Every time I had to make a stop, I would see Mark either helping a customer, walking the grounds making sure everyone had a pleasant experience, and always addressed the customer by name. That is great service. If I had to use a self storage again, I would go out of my way to come back here. In the process of moving I needed to put some items in storage and began to check rates in the area so I wouldn't have to go far. I saw A-1 had a good rate and promotion for the size storage unit I was interested in and began to fill out the reservation form. Before it could completely submit I received a call from Anna. She confirmed all of the information I had entered on the form and told me she'd be there to assist with my needs. I arrived and Anna was pleasant in going over the rules and things I should know since this was my first time renting a storage unit. I lucked up and got a unit on the ground floor inside not far from the entrance. She showed me how to enter my lock and the best way to protect my items insurance wise. This might be a bit of an unusual review, because I ended up having to rent a space closer to where I live. But A-1 was the nicest place I saw, and the manager, Corey, was the best. He clearly has customer service down -- professional, friendly, informative, and helpful. The trust factor, which is important for me, is definitely high with Corey in management. In addition to the pleasure of being helped out and shown around by Corey, the facility is really clean and spacious, and the security was the best I've seen. An added safety feature that I really appreciated, and did not see even in the more expensive places I checked out, is that they are set up for cylinder locks as well as padlocks on the units. If the travel time was just a little shorter, or if I wasn't going to need a lot of back-and-forth to the storage unit for the next few months, there's no question I'd have rented my unit from A-1 in Oakland. I'll definitely be keeping A-1 in mind for the future, if I end up having longer-term storage needs. read more

I just got my storage space and so far everything is great! Maribel was very helpful and nice. The facility is clean and I love the Kiosk concept for being able to do all transactions. Can't wait to use it. The key for the cart was odd but I was shocked when Maribel asked if I wanted to keep it while I go get more of my items and I could return it later. Obviously a nice facility, but prices are high. 5x5 room (essentially half a closet) $106.00 a month!?!? For half a closet; seriously. I told them the price seemed high. They responded with the notion that they were competitive ? The storages across the street is about 30.00 dollars cheaper, with more room. Plus you have to pay mandatory property insurance $10.00. $20.00 admin fee. Lock $9.99. Up front for half closet $140.00!?! I didn't even bother to ask what a whole closet cost. Maybe I should've got a quote for cubby-hole. read more

The staff is very helpful and the facility is new and clean. The location is convenient and safe and even has water views. The storage units are armed with alarm and you would need to arm/disarm, which is how you get in/out from the nice, secure gates. Hand trucks/carts are available for use for free (need to be checked out during office hours but can return after hours), and there are nice, big elevators that can fit 4 of those hand trucks. There are restrooms on-site. We were not able to find any trash can or dumpster on-site so make sure to bring your own garbage bag, etc. Small storage units may not have lights. Access to the facility closes at 10pm. We were moving from out of town, got to the facility after office hours, and were able to rent a storage unit via the kiosk outside the office. The storage unit required a cylindrical lock, which the kiosk was able to dispense...pretty cool. Overall, we are very satisfied. The newness and cleanliness of the facility and the friendly staff are what got us sold on choosing A-1. read more

I've gotten to know them as I sold my house and moved its contents to the A1 Storage Unit off high street. 7 months I've had my things there while looking for a new home. I was always in and out with questions galore and they are always patient and kind. As other reviewers mentioned, the place is clean, well run, secure and if your unit is on the Alameda side, you get a lovely view of the canal.
