We booked this company to move us and told them exactly what we needed which was some help packing and moving our items to our new location. They told us a price. Said we only needed 2 movers. When the 2 movers got here they didn't speak English or my language of cantonese so we couldn't communicate. They ask me to talk to the lady translating for us to figure out what was going on. The lady said "oh they think it's too much work and in the middle of my call the movers just got in their truck and left. I asked the lady translating if the movers left and she acted surprised and said let me call the lead manager to send you new movers and she never got back to me. So unprofessional. I called because someone recommended them but after scheduling my move I read the reviews. I see they have a tip schedule. I'm very into giving tip and even gifts to those who deserve working hard and customer oriented. Secondly, I saw a negative review and the owner dismissed it by saying you are not one of our customers. 3rd reason is they do not actually have an honor system. THE AUDACITY!! I called to schedule an appointment for a move since their rates are much more affordable than many other moving companies. I was quoted $65/hr for 2 people TWO HOUR MINIMUM. Not bad right... Well... 1) I cannot understand There is a big language barrier when trying to coordinate details and scheduling with the people in the phone. Be prepared to constantly repeat yourself and spell out your address over and over again. Also, I am requesting for help to load a truck and no further assistance needed. Well, that information doesn't apply to them because my hiring service isn't for them to drive my belongings anywhere. 2) canceling After some heavy thoughts and re-reading reviews about the servers demanding tip, I decided to retracted. If I had such a difficult time with organizing the schedule, imagine when they are on site. And to demand tip for the little moving they'll be doing in 45 minutes yet paying them 2 hrs minimum of work plus tip (to their liking) sounded ridiculous to me. I called to cancel and politely said "I'd like to cancel my schedule service for July 2nd" and the guy had the audacity to bluntly say"WHY". That is not their concern. My movers were fantastic!! I was referred to A&W movers by a friend they were highly recommended. I used them for a local (2 miles) move of 2 bedroom apartment. Hired 2 movers at the rate of $80/hr + $30 gas fee. This quote was significantly lower than other movers I called. The mover were prompt and arrived on time. Quickly wrapped furniture. They took pictures dismantling beds. I was impressed by how efficient they were. They took excellent care of my belongings, not one ding or dent on anything during the move. The only cons I can think of are 1) cash or check only. They do not take credit or debit card and 2) very limited English. A couple of times I had to text a message relay a message to the movers which was no problem for me. I don't plan to move any time soon bit I would definitely use A&W again. read more

I moved with this company. Terrible experience. 1. The movers reschedule within 24 hours.Short notice. And we have to accept. 2. Even with the rescheduled appointment, they were 2.5 hrs late. 3. BROKE my house's curtain and window screen. Yes, they broke it by forcing the curtain rod in opposite direction. 4. Even with all above, ask for 50% of tips and refusing to take responsibility of the broken parts. Not sure if my experience is limited to this mover only or it's a company wide thing. I've used their services in the past and the most recent experience will lead me to seek another moving company in the future. It's all a downhill coast +'s: Downhill means it was easy. It wasn't. It was a trying experience and one of the worst moves I've had. I've moved over 20 times in my lifetime and this was the worst. At least the movers carefully wrapped our furniture before uploading them on the truck and taking them to our home. It's all an uphill battle -'s: It was a battle to get this move done and end on a good note. - We hired 3 movers. The third one called in sick on the morning of the move. To compensate, we had our rate moved from $85 to $72 per hour. A replacement could not be found in time and let's just say we have a lot of stuff and it was raining. This set back our progress. - The rate of $85/hr for 3 movers was for repeat customers. It fell to $72/hr for two movers. My friend got a rate of $65/hr for two movers and she is a new customer. It's apparent that my repeat business is not worth a new customer rate. - Since it was raining I had asked for extra blankets to ensure that our new carpet did not get dirty. I ended up laying out all the blankets for them. Towards the end of the day, shoes were hitting the carpet. - I asked for six wardrobe boxes. Only two were in working order. This is the first time it has ever happened to me to have non-functional wardrobe boxes to transfer our clothing. It was stressful to not have clothes properly transferred. - We tipped 20% because they did work hard. We had also ordered lunch for them. We thought we were being generous. They complained. After reading etiquette on tipping, we compensated more than the standard. Unfortunately they failed to appreciate our gratitude and ended the entire experience on the most sour note that we could have imagined. Overall their rates are low compared to other moving companies. But if they expect to be tipped over 20% for their low rates, then there's an issue. Bottom line is that I will not use them again given how I was charged higher than other customers, got a mover bailing us on the morning of our move, and harassed for more tips. read more

I regretted not using another moving company even though it would have been twice as expensive. However, my blood pressure wouldn't have been so high and I wouldn't feel like I was going to have a heart attack from dealing with the stress. I got a quote of $65/hr for two movers... yes, that's very cheap... maybe too cheap that I should have been more cautious or set super low expectations. I had a one-bedroom's worth of furniture (minus the bed) and everything have been wrapped or boxed up and ready to go from a previous move. The process of moving the items on the truck was ok, except I had to ask them multiple times for a hanging closet which I requested prior to the move and they struggled coming up with one at the end. Once we got to the house they laid out a padded mat up the staircase. I was thinking that's so thoughtful as I have hardwood staircase and they didn't want to dirty or scratch them as they carry up our items. That was not the case, they planned to drag all items up the house using the metal dolly and I had to stop them. Long story short, they were not happy and they were really struggling without the dolly. We even helped carry up some items including the heaviest item which was a dresser. The move completed within 2 hours so the fee was $130. We gave them $190 which includes a $60 tip and they wanted $200! That was a 46% tip and they were not content. I recall reading about this in previous reviews but I didn't think 46% tip was too little. If they expect 50%+ tip then I suggest they state that upfront or just adjust their hourly rate to something higher. I will end this review with these two words - NEVER AGAIN... read more

Chan's moving was a good lesson in getting what you paid for. When we priced a variety of movers to return me to the city from my small, 400 foot condo, Chan's was a clear winner. Within three hours, the three men moved everything into the city, and moved the items that were going to storage into the storage unit. As the items going to the storage unit included a futon, full sized bed, and couch, that was no small feet. The language barrier was an issue, particularly since the leader, who had the best english skills (best being relative) was downtstairs on the truck as I was trying to explain that the futon would not be able to make it up the stairs unless it was taken apart. The cost was $275. I gave them $325-a fifty dollar tip. THEY ASKED FOR MORE! I couldn't believe it. As it was my move, I was paying with my cash, but had given the BF the money to handle the transaction. Once I said no, they intimated that he was whipped to try and get more money out of him. He was remarkably cool through this exchange-I clearly was not-and later he told me he wasn't surprised because his colleague (who had recommended them) had the same experience. read more

I've used these guys three times, total. The first time to move from the inner richmond to lafayette, the second time to move from lafayette to pacific heights and the third time to simply move apartments in my current building. They don't speak much english, but they've been very pleasant. In the second move I had a color television turn into a black and white television. Otherwise no big issues. Their rate is $80 per hour for 3 people. A great deal! My moves have never taken more than 3 hours and I've always tipped them an extra hundred or two. For a move in between I used Shamrock movers and weren't happy with them at all. This third time I was very careful to make sure they were careful with the plasma TV, etc. They did a lot of the packing for me which meant they threw things indiscriminantly into a box. They were good natured. They found things to put other things in when they ran out of boxes - $1 per box. I was happy with the overall experience UNTIL The guy gave me the sheet to sign with the total. The move took 4 and a half hours and the invoice said the correct amount - $360 plus $20 for boxes (that was all they brought). I thought I was being generous because I was throwing in a $120 tip for the guys but then two of them started insisting that I give them $30 more for a tip because "the boss gets these money. we need to buy lunch". I didn't appreciate the noises they were making that sounded like "crazy woman. she doesn't know anything". OK, so apparently a $40 individual tip wasn't enough for them to buy lunch. They needed $50. I gave it to them and told them they drove a hard bargain. In my head I vowed to never use them again. I mean really! Demanding a larger tip when I was being very generous already. They didn't even have to use their truck or drive anywhere! Sorry, Chan's, you fell off my list of favorite services here in SF. I had 3 guys to help me move from Sunnyvale to San Francisco. In SF, my apt is on the third floor with no elevator. The guys were helpful and nice through out the process. They really alleviated whatever concerns I had that stemmed from my past experiences with other moving companies. I gave them $10 tip/ person/ hour worked (e.g. 4 hours = $40 tips/person). I felt that it was fair. I don't understand the comments made by other reviewers on this page who somehow thought they didn't have to pay tips or that paying a fair amount of tips was somehow a problem? You gave your waitress 15% tips for bringing you a plate of food and taking it away, don't you think you need to tip your movers fairly??? I would highly recommend Chan's Moving Service - we had them move from multiple locations - they are fast, efficient, courteous and friendly. My last move I used Corvan for a move across town, my friend and I did most of the work - 1 of the movers sat in the truck most of the day. 1. They were supposed to meet us at 11-12 at an address to pick up craigslist furniture. I partied like Keith Richards the night before, inhaled McDonald's breakfast while driving and still dragged my ass out bed to get there on time. They came at 1:40. No apology of any kind. I could have been watching football and not eating McDonalds if they were going to be nearly 2 hours late. 2. We specifically asked for Cantonese speaking movers multiple times. We were told multiple times "no problem no problem". Languages NOT spoken by movers: Cantonese, English. This added extra time due to communication issues. 3. All of our stuff was in boxes and our storage unit had bad ass carts so we could stack boxes on it. Our apartment complex also had a cart to stack boxes on. I helped the movers I think the presence of these carts plus my ridiculous silverback combination of power and quickness and honey badger like ferocity surpised the movers. The move could have been done in 3 hours flat. Towards the 3 hour mark these cats started dragging their feet to the point that I was making 2 trips to the truck and back for every trip they were making. It really really felt like they were dragging their feet at the end to charge us for an extra unnecessary half hour. I communicated to them that the box spring from storage would NOT be going in to the apartment using gestures AND google translate on my phone and they still brought it up. They put a bunch of smaller things into a larger box to bring up and then instead of taking it out of the box instructed my 5'0 100 lb girlfriend to do it herself. The only reason this is a 3 star review instead of 2 is because this was half the price at $65/hr than the $600-700 i was quoted by other companies. Horrible. Simply stated - horrible service. In fact, it's such horrible service that I'd rather poke my finger in my eye and swirl my brain around then call them ever again. I had everything planned in advance - the move, the location, everything. All they needed to do was move a studio apartment which was less than 300 square feet -- and this process took them 7 hours. Yes, that's right -- 7 HOURS!!! On top of that, one of the so called "movers" was mostly MIA the entire time. I have no idea what in the hell he did the entire time. No idea. They did not even complete the move -- I ran out of time and had to separately move out the kitchen which they didn't touch. In addition, they bummed change from me to feed the meters, and I got so angry I became the second laborer to move items out of my apartment because of said MIA mover mentioned above. I helped move into my new place. Then to add insult to injury they asked for a tip which I personally found in poor form, but also because a less than 300 square feet studio kicked their asses, I pushed back and paid them $60 -- and they weren't happy. I've never ever posted a one star rated review but these clowns deserve a 0 star rating if I could give them that. Horrible. I'd suggest reviewing the lowest ratings first rather than the highest ratings first for this particular company. There are some real stories from real people that have been burned by this company. It's interesting how some of the highest ratings come from reviewers with only one review -- for this company only. Could these be fake profiles with a single glowing review meant to bump up the rating? Considering the practically criminal behavior by this company, I wouldn't be surprised. It actually took me two months to calm down enough to write the above paragraph. As I was saving a lot of money, I wasn't expecting any unnecessary extra frills which gives other companies reasons to charge a higher fee. I just needed my stuff moved. That's it. Look - if you're expecting a posh, hand holding, white glove service - this is not it (and if you are, you should probably re-examine your common sense given the prices you are paying here). I hired 3 movers for a local move, but with a lot of stuff to move and big furniture items to disassemble. Took 5 hours total. If you're looking for a company to move your furniture fast, without damage, dis-assemble and re-assemble your furniture - this is it. These guys are all business, and the speed in which they do their job is borderline ridiculous. So fast. Like Xi Jinping about to send their family to re-education camp if they don't finish quickly fast. The movers came promptly a few minutes early before the designated time. A "good morning" greeting? - NOPE. Small talk? - NOPE. Bathroom break? - NOPE. Wait for the truck lift to finish going down so they can exit the truck safely? NOPE JUST JUMP. They don't have time for that shit, they're here for one thing only - and that's to move your things in one piece. They saw what needed to be done and got right to work. Only time they spoke to me was to point out that my desk was chipped before they touched it (which I knew already). I move more than I like (once every 1-2 years) and I've never seen movers work and go about their business so fast. Like organized chaos. Most importantly, the less time it takes time the more $$$ I save - so just shut up and get out of their way. There is a language barrier if you don't speak Mandarin, but it is not hard to get by. Simple directions like "leave this item here, put this in the garage, desk goes in that room, etc." - they all understand. Moving isn't rocket science. They've done this more times than you can imagine and generally know how to move and place things and take direction. I don't speak Mandarin and it was no problem. We're all humans here. They did the job in half the amount of time that it took the movers to do the same job last year. Bed frame disassembled and re-assembled in 20 minutes (what, how?). They were first recommedned to me by my professor. I used them twice in the past 2+ years. 1. If you want movers who can speak Chinese, they are a top choice. 2. They worked very hard. Although as Asian, they are not as strong as Mexicans, they have professional moving tools and tried to move as fast as they can. Their price is fair in the SF bay area. My husband and I needed to move furniture from San Francisco to South Bay. I communicated my reservation in Chinese (they speak both Cantonese / Mandarin) fluently. They asked how many movers I needed and how many hours I think I need. They charged $75 / hour for two people. The movers showed up 30 mins in advance of our reservation. They were very patient and waited for us to arrive at the location. The movers had some paper boxes / blankets to protect the furniture we have. They were very delicate and careful when they tried moving furniture through doors etc. I appreciated their thoughtfulness. We had to move a class / delicate cabinet for decorations and they were very careful with it. The movers spoke limited English, but do understand what you are saying if you speak slowly and point. They are here in a foreign country, trying to make an honest living, so please be patient with them. They will try their best to understand you if you speak in English - just speak slowly. The movers drove slowly from the City to South Bay and took roads that are more flat so that your furniture will not be damage. They didn't charge me for the gas of moving from city to South Bay, which was good. Advice: - Since there are only two people, I would recommend that you help them keep the doors open etc. if they needed help. read more

My wife and I used Chan's for our move from Los Angeles to San Francisco. They were very fast yet still took the time to wrap everything up well so it wouldn't get damaged. They did show up a few hours early but we were ready so it worked out nicely. They didn't speak much English but my wife is Chinese so she did all the talking, one less thing I needed to do = win for me. YAY. No problems for us with the tip as I've read other Yelpers have had, I took the advice that I read from other postings so maybe thats why we were fine. My mother in law will be using Chans to move from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the next few months and I would recommend them to anyone else for that matter. This wasn't a house move, it was movement of heavy equipment from San Jose to Sunnyvale. Pros: They showed up on time--even a little early! They got the job done quickly and well. The delivery guys were friendly and their prices are great. Cons: They didn't speak a lot of English. They had a couple questions and it was hard to understand them, but their home office speaks English just well enough that they mediated for us and it was fine. I'd use them again, but beware if you or someone you're working with doesn't speak English well or has a thick accent: that may complicate matters. I am super pissed off at the fact that they asked for $40 per person tip after 4 and half hours of move. They did a good job with moving except they showed up 1hr 15 min earlier without any calls and scratched the hardwood floor. Didn't speak much English and I had to remind them several time that we have to stop at a storage and another house to pick up more furniture since they kept trying to unload the furniture at each stop! Finally when it came down to pay them of work of 4 and half hours, which was $270. I paid them $300 including tip. Suddenly the movers who didn't speak much English got vocal and said it's not enough tip. I never used movers before and didn't know the stander for the tip and asked what's appropriate! I would never recommend this company to anyone!!! The company that we went with the last time was booked and we had only a few weeks to find someone. Every other reputable company was also booked so I had no choice but to go with them. Your furniture will be ruined!!! They will place items that they have broken in a compact way so that you won't notice it until you put the items away. They left everything in the garage and outside of the garage. They broke a lamp and also scraped up other furniture of ours. We have an expensive 65 inch tv.. there is a mark on it that wasn't there before the move. They will spend time taking apart items that aren't meant to taken a part. They will get lost for an hour and make up some BS. Also, they won't bring men that are capable of moving heavy items. There was literally and 80 year old grandpa and a teen who both didn't know what they were doing.. nor did they have the muscle/ strength to move anything... The kicker is they were Asian and spoke in their native language so we couldn't understand what they were saying... rude people.. Ps- I am part Asian so not discriminating. read more

We were looking for a cheaper option since moving can be quite expensive and stressful. We had Chan's Moving Service do a move about a month ago. With less than one-week notice, they were able to accommodate us. The quote was $80/hr for 3 guys in a move from SF to Berkeley. They were pretty punctual and had 3 workers (all spoke good enough English to communicate). They loaded from a storage facility with one extra stop at a home before the trip over to a condo in Berkeley. Unfortunately, they had to park a little further than expected. So that meant extra walking through the parking garage and they also needed to go up the the 3rd floor as well before unloading. That being said, these guys worked hard and did a really efficient job in about 4 hours flat. The grand total was $320. Each worker was personally thanked and tipped about $60 each (I believe). I wish we could of given more, but that was all we had. I know tipping is often expected in this line of work (even though the tipping concept is a optional act of kindness). With the low overall cost they charge, there's likely the desire for a little more compensation through the tips. I understand the perspective that they may seem greedy, but I'm sure these movers don't make much which is why they hope for a good tip. I figure that if they do a good job - I think they deserve a good tip especially when you can save hundreds of dollars. Overall - I think Chan's Moving Service is a very good cost effective option to consider since they are much much cheaper than other moving companies. I encourage you to call them for a quote as you do your research for a cost comparison. If you speak Cantonese, it is very helpful with communication. They also had no issue providing a Certificate of Insurance as well which we needed for our building. I'm really glad we used them. read more

I just hired them to move our stuff. They came on time. We bought lunch for them. After lunch, they changed to slow mode and took around 8 hours for them to move 2 bed rooms stuff. During the move, they drop our stuff here and there. I thought... well, cheap means low quality so I just pretend i did not hear anything. In the end of day, the drama started when they ask for tips. I don't mind pay them a little more tips but they basically act like mafia. I almost called the local police because they want to take us to ATM to pay them more tips. We called the owner and he said we already paid enough. If you want to hire them, making sure you negotiate the costs and tip and all written down. You also want to make sure movers are agreed because they don't give $hit what their owner already agreed. Good luck ! I wish I could not give any star to this company. Worst possible mover I have ever come across. We wanted to move out of our apt in San Mateo on Friday 30th September so we scheduled our move with this company 2 weeks before for 9.00 am. We called them at 9.00 and they said our movers are not available. We rescheduled the move to 2.00pm after they promised they will send us 3 movers instead of 2 to make the move faster since we had a timeline for 4.00 pm to use our freight elevator. We called them at 2.20 and they said movers are on their way and will be there shortly.After waiting for another half an hour they told us we will not be able to show up today since our movers can't make it before 4. There were no signs of an apology from them. We were in a fix since it was our last day at the apartment and we had to move given no choice. We told the company that we would have to pay 200$ fine if we use the elevator post 4.00. They said it's not their problem and send us a proof for a document that states this.we did that within 5 mins .We rescheduled this to 3.30 since we had no option. Called them at 3.30 and they said movers are on their way. Called at 3.40 the they said movers turned back since no one was standing down. Sheer lie my husband Was waiting downstairs from 3.30. It's 4.00 o clock and the movers are showing up. There was no apology from the company. They kept Making false commitments and put us through so much of stress. Please don't book this company. Just used Chan's again to move from SF to Menlo Park. Again they were great. This isn't a full service moving company (they do not pack your boxes for you). But will do all of the heavy lifting, wrap your stuff in plastic/blankets, pack in their truck, and unload. The two guys helping us had a bit rough English, but if you spoke slowly they would understand exactly what you wanted. It was $75/hr, and we threw in a $100 tip for each of the movers. Mr. Chan is a stand up guy. Called and asked them to come at 9, they actually came about ten minutes early. He had two guys come and they moved quickly and did everything with care. He called during the move to ask if everything was going well and made sure we were satisfied. All in all, I recommend them. read more
