Then I asked about the latest and greatest in vacuum cleaners, and I also asked about the sexy-looking vacuums in the showroom that I'd not seen before. The guy at the shop seemed very nice and willing to help. I came in because the cord for my Kirby G3 had broken and I needed it replaced. He told me it would cost $90 to repair it. I was also looking to buy bags for it, which ended up being $20 for a 3 or 6 pack. Keep in mind, the only thing wrong with it was the cord needed to be replaced. I went home and got online. I'm a frequent online shopper so I'm familiar with the process of finding better deals. First I checked the Kirby website. $33 and some change for a replacement cord that takes 5 seconds to install. (Just plug it in to the vacuum.) Not only that, but I got two 3-packs of bags for about $10-12. All in all, with free shipping, I spent about $50 on a new cord and 6 new bags. Received them in less than a week. In summary, what would have cost me $120 at this shop, ended up costing me $50 and a 5 second DIY repair. I didn't have a negative experience with the guy at the shop at all; he was friendly, polite, and helpful. But I do think that they are charging far too much. I saved myself almost 60% by buying online and doing the repair myself. Obviously this is not applicable to every situation where equipment needs repair. But this is a case where it was a super, super simple and easy 5 second fix and he was going to charge $70 for labor. Ridiculous. Just be careful and do your research beforehand; make sure you're not being ripped off! read more
