A warning to Subaru owners: Do not take your vehicles to A & A The Shop!!!! My car was towed to A & A for repair. They failed to check that my car was locked in their lot. As a result, someone got into my car and totally trashed the interior! After chasing the person out of my car and despite seeing the extensive damage to the interior, they did not notify me or my husband! Total negligence on their part while trying to place the blame on the tow truck company! The owner REFUSED to pay for the cleaning and sanitizing of my car saying, "I didn't cause the damage, the homeless guy did!" I had my car towed to another repair shop and had to file a claim with my insurance company to pay for the cleaning and sanitizing of the interior which cost $350! A & A lied about so many of the mistakes they made regarding my car and despite us being long time customers, they were totally uninterested in making the situation right or in keeping us as customers! This business is totally unethical and was not willing to accept any responsibility for their negligence!!! read more

Our 1997 Subaru Legacy had a clutch failure and a transmission failure. This was a problem that other shops refused to deal with. Dexter worked with us going beyond the call of duty. After repairing the clutch, he found a used transmission (nearly impossible to come by). With both problems solved the car is back on the road and running great! We are very grateful! read more

Had a power window get stuck down on a Friday night. It was cold, very snowy and we had a 400 mile drive to get home on Sunday morning. Called several shops around Anchorage to find a shop that could at least get the window back up for us to no avail. Kevin fit us into a busy schedule, had a tech sort things out and had us ready to go in less than 30 minutes. Great shop, fantastic sense of humor and first rate service. A day later I find out my brake calipers were shot after I had told A and A to do a complete brake inspection! I was on my way to Fairbanks and could have been seriously hurt. Update to this review: I was able to speak with management and he handled this situation with respect and care. I appreciate his understanding and willingness to make things right. However, I did have to go in person to make contact with him because after calling several times I never received a call back. Rating is for poor communication, poor business ethics and charging for repairs that did not address any problems that the vehicle came in with but in fact made issues worse. The first time I brought my vehicle in for repairs the issues were not fixed with the repairs that were made. Brought the car back again a week later and after additional repairs and the car is worse. (Repairs totaled $3400) When I called to let them know they said they can "maybe" take another look at it. That is not the response of a business who stands behind their work. I paid for repairs that didn't fix any of the issues I came in with and the vehicle is no longer drivable. (Speedometer doesn't work, won't shift gears). Tell me how was this missed in the test drive I paid $150 for? I asked to speak to management I was told they would contact me. I'll let you decide . . . I brought my Outback in for new rear struts ($740) but when I went to pick up the car, the ABS light was on. Because it wasn't on when I brought it in, I wanted it turned off. I waited for about an hour while the tech tried to get the light off but he couldn't, so I agreed to leave the car overnight (which turned into over a week) for them to fix it. I got a call from Kevin saying "that the tech told him there were multiple lights on, including the ABS light, when the car was brought in". UNTRUE! Then he then told me that the rear ABS sensor needed to be replaced to get the light to go off. That would cost me another $700+. For the record, when I brought my car in there was a single light on in the dashboard that I had already had checked and had planned on fixing. While I was talking about the ABS light with the tech he mentioned that "the sensor may have become jostled from the banging with the rear struts replacement" and he went on to tell me that "something had been put on backwards so he fixed it, but that hadn't made the light go off either". OK. My POV ~ not pleased that A&A now wants another $750+ to replace the sensor. This was my first visit. I had originally even had a 2nd car towed there to be worked on (that I had ended up getting towed away ) as well. More important to me was that someone lied and said that I'd had "multiple lights on". A&A POV ~ I assume they believe that I'm trying to pull a fast one to get my ABS sensor replaced. All I can say to that, is if I owned a shop and there were "multiple lights on in the dashboard" I most definitely would have noted it on the intake paperwork (and probably verified it with a picture) to document any problems. Now I'm guessing that the tech probably wishes he hadn't talked to me, because of admitting that the light may have come on due to the rear struts work they did, as well as telling me about the part that was put on backwards. As far as the 'multiple lights' comment, Kevin said the tech told him but regardless of who said it - it was untrue. Had I of known that this was going to become such a thing, I would have paid closer attention to what was said. I worked with April after that (who was very polite in every way possible) and she said they could offer to replace the sensor for $400 parts cost and they would wave the cost of labor. This I thought this was a decent enough offer (considering they thought I was mistaken about the ABS being lit when I brought it in) and to get the light to go off I was going to have to replaced it (by them or elsewhere else). I wish I'd read the reviews before bringing it in because I agree about being the shop being dishonest, overcharging and doing less than stellar work. Originally I had even had a 2nd car towed there to be worked on that needless to say, I had towed away as well. What would you do? read more

The folks at A&A really impressed me with their service. I bought an '09 Forester off Craigslist (big mistake) and immediately began having problems. I brought it to A&A and people at the front desk actively listened and were patient as I explained what was going on. They fixed the problems in a day and sent me on my way. After a few months went by, my Forester developed a serious problem (no fault of A&A's), and I took it in again. There was some miscommunication between the staff and I which resulted in the main problem of my car not being fixed after it was returned to me. I was pretty rattled, and got short with Dexter at the front desk. He kept his cool throughout the interaction. The next week, Kurt, who owns the shop reached out and invited me to meet with him at the A&A office. He had taken diligent notes of every service performed on my car, apologized and refunded my last bill on the spot. We even ended up having a great conversation that lasted 30 minutes. I felt like they were very upfront about the issues & helped me sort out what was needed right away & what would be coming down the road for other issues. This shop is hands down one of the most thorough, honest, and hard working groups of mechanics you will ever find. We moved out of state five years ago and even now I will occasionally call for advice. Last week I called about selling our Outback in the next few years and the gentleman who picked up spent 20 minutes with me on the phone answering questions about what types of maintenance to do now, what to defer, what time of year to list it, etc. If they are willing to spend that kind of time with a former customer it says a lot about them and the pride they take in their knowledge and work. Being a vulnerable adult and not wanting to leave the house, my Subaru needed the winter tire changeover and an oil change. Whether reviving my old Subie with a new head gasket (still going strong many years and 2 Al-Can trips later), doing straightforward maintenance, sleuthing to find a drink holder that's no longer on the market, fixing a window lever, finding a simple solution for an issue I feared would be big/expensive (there have been several), or even helping me install a windshield wiper, I know my car is in good hands. I'm done with A&A. I had heard they were THE shop for my Subarus, but I do not trust them. They overcharge terribly and I'm suspicious that they don't do everything they charge for (inspection points mostly) . There are options for subaru work in Anchorage. Anchorage auto repair shops notoriously poor standards. I used to rely on A&A for Subaru service. Seemed to have declining experience and quality problems. First poor experience with hvac control box problem, well okay. Second experience with with suspension and vibration analysis. Well three strikes and I'm out. Routine service substandard especially with transmission fluid change and sparkplug change. Better luck recently with local Subaru dealership. read more

I will never bring a car here again. This shop is evidently interested in only one thing: getting your money out of your wallet. I brought my Subaru here and was quoted nearly $4000 in repairs, and was given a long spiel about why it all needed to be done immediately, and pressured to put down a big deposit on parts. I was skeptical and walked out with my car. After taking my car to another mechanic I trust for a second opinion, a few hundred dollars and it's back in great shape. If you bring your car here, make sure you get a quote before they do any work, and definitely get a second opinion before authorizing them to do any repairs. I brought my newly-bought used car in thinking that it only needed a ball joint replaced - after an inspection it turned out that there were a lot of issues that needed to be resolved to make my Subaru Outback safe to drive. The staff were incredibly friendly and understanding about my frustration with all of the unforeseen issues with this vehicle, and continued fixing my car until it was good to go, even comping me for a ball joint they replaced that wasn't the main issue. I was worried that because I don't know a lot about cars that I'd be taken advantage of, but they explained what needed fixed and why it needed fixed. They communicated with me with every thing that came up, and I will definitely be going back with any problems I have. I could not recommend them more. read more

This place used to be the ONLY place to even think about bringing a Subaru for service, but it appears they have become a victim of their own success. My last visit revealed inattentive counter personnel, a complete failure to even bother with looking at several of the items that I had repeatedly asked be repaired, and a lack of follow-through in rectifying the situation by the counter person who professed apologies at the time for the former problems but then forgot about me. read more

I've only been here once so far, but they did excellent work on my Subaru Outback and it was cheap! I just had some small issues though, no major mechanical work. I've trusted this shop to work on my outback several times and I have always been satisfied. I also appreciate that they have a shuttle service, which is very helpful. One time I called and asked about the price to do some body work on my vehicle, and they even said that since they would charge more than other places, they recommended I take it to someone across town. They may have lost money on that repair but I feel like I can trust them in the future for whatever my outback needs. read more

So I have recently been to A&A for multiple things regarding my two Subarus, I have a 2009 Forester, and a 2014 STI. I can honestly say that the service I have received here has been great, from the front counter (Alex is awesome btw) to the technicians who completed my work. I need an oil change on both my cars and a scan for a CEL on my Forester. they scanned it no problem and told me it was a Cat code and instead of pushing a $1500 repair i was told to give something else a try to clean out the Cat and maybe that would help resolve it. Nothing was ever pushed needlessly and the pricing I got was great. I dislike dealerships with a passion and the fact that I have trained subaru techs working on my car makes me very happy. I will always bring my two soobs here for whatever i may need. read more

Kurt, there is really no excuse for the premature failure other than faulty part (gasket and radiator cap were purchased from your company), or incorrect or shoddy install (performed by your company). If a part that we purchased from you failed you should have fixed the problem and taken the additional cost up with the manufacturer. And I tried to get you to give me a discount on the re-repair and you said no. You offered nothing other than a free "sniffer" test. In this scenario a free sniffer test is almost nothing; I imagine it takes almost zero labor hours at all to conduct. And your counter-guy said they stopped the test without waiting for a full reading because exhaust showed in the cooling system so quickly. So we're talking literally minutes of labor. And even after I had someone else fix it for the second time -- and paid for it a second time -- I asked you to pay for part of the second repair through Better Business Bureau (what a joke they are) and you blew me off. In my eyes I got 1/3 of what I paid your company for and you should reimburse me 2/3 of the cost of the second repair. And calm down, the second repair was only $1,400 (not $2,800 or whatever you guys charge nowadays). read more

Brought my car here because it was overheating, paid 900$ on labor and parts they said i needed , ended up not even needing one of the parts and i had to come back to get my old part put back on because the new part did not work, and then when i bring it back to see why the new part i paid for isn't working and now apparently my engine is failing??? doesn't make sense how i just brought it there and paid for alll these things just for them to say my car is basically a loss because i need an entire new engine and they said all they had to do was literally look at it to be able to see that, but they somehow didn't see it before?? somehow before it was all these other things that were wrong with it, it just doesn't make sense.i don't recommend this shop at all. i feel like i have been scammed by them because i myself don't know to much about cars so i just trusted them because they are a MECHANIC shop that SPECIALIZES IN SUBARUS and they should KNOW what they are doing , because that's what we pay them for! they shouldn't just replace parts that don't need replacing, i thought they knew what the problem was and the 900 dollars i spent would fix the issues i was experiencing. read more

I have been taking my Subaru here for over ten years. They give good service for a reasonable price and are honest.

I recently took my Impreza to the Eagle River office. Zack was super helpful and friendly. He informed me of what I needed and took less than an hour to rotate/balance my tires and change my oil. I really liked the professionalism and convenience of not having to pay a gazillion dollars for routine care. read reviews seems like I'm not the only unhappy customer. brought in 09 legacy in for cel, misfires ,running bad .they didn't even test drive it .( I noted the mileage ) 1.5 hours $142 in the hole ,there responce to issue was change spark plugs and wires . they got real quite when I told them plugs and wires are less than a month old .they never even removed one and inspected it .oh and I have a leaking valve cover gasket as well . Highly Recommended: There are few providers of any kind that I actually enjoy working with. A&A The Shop, however, makes my prime list of companies. I have used A&A for the past fourteen years. At the time I took my Subaru here I felt like I received pretty good service. However after further research I have come to realize that not only was I incredibly over charged, but I was also advised to do some work that they described as "urgent", which I later discovered was not. I have had numerous other friends, with the same experience here. Bottom line: Their actual repair work is fine, but they charge twice as much as other shops and they are NOT honest about what work needs to be done.
