Contacted them to replace the heating blower for my truck...naturally it went out right after our first frost in Anchorage. I tried to replace it myself but there wasn't enough canola oil in the world to get me under the dash to do so. Excellent service from the moment I called. Scheduled an appointment and when I arrived the team was professional and courteous. I dropped my vehicle off at 0730 as suggested and decided to wait until it was done. In just a little over an hour and a half it was done. Only $189 for labor since I had already purchased the blower. Can't recommend this business enough. Will come back if ever needed in the future. I took my car for an inspection because I lost heat over the Christmas week, drop off explain to them that I need a new blower motor because I was told few days earlier by the car dealership that my blower motor needs to be replaced. I got a call later that afternoon that my blower motor was bad, and they also told me that there was no power to the blower, so they trace out to the under-hood fuse box and a fuse was missing, they replaced defective blower motor. that afternoon I pick up my car paid $567.00 and went on my pay that was New Year's Eve, I didn't drive the car after I got home, it sat for a day. The next day I had errands run and found out the car had no heat. I took back to them 7:30 that morning explain the car only had heat for 1 day, after waiting 5 hours to see why the repair only work for one day they told me that the under hood fuse box melted connector and will need to be replaced which they so nicely told me that it's going to cost an additional $1004.00 to fix when problem I brought in for in the first place was not even fix yet. I would go on to say a whole lot more about dealing with this shop, but I would have to write a book. let's just say I got new blower motor at different shop, and it's been working over a week now no problem. Took my 2016 Taco TRD in for an oil change and tire rotation upon moving into town. Truck needed it and it's a good litmus test for the quality of a mechanic you're planning to do future business with. Simple job, but they torqued the heck out of the oil filter cap and caused it to crack upon its subsequent removal on the next oil change. $120 replacement after a $90 oil change. Common mistake for the inexperienced or careless, either way I won't be going there again. read more

Called made an appointment for my PU because it was running rough and Check Engine Light was on. Waited three weeks and took my snow tires also to be put on. They told me I would need a separate appointment for the tires. I asked at the time if it could be the Catalytic Converter. He said they would take a look at it. Got it back on second day. With the snow tires on. Charged me $920. Two weeks later light back on. Called in guy says "we don't do catalytic converters". Go somewhere else. Oh and three of my tires are going flat. read more

I took my vehicle here on personal recommendations from friends and family, but also based off yelp reviews. Typically I get my repairs at a local chain, but wanted to support local on this. I gave a detailed list of things needed to be repaired on my vehicle. I specified I wanted a call for an estimate as well before the work would be done. I did not receive a call. I dropped my vehicle off at 8am and finally called around 2pm to see what the status of the estimate was. Come to find out my car was already being worked on. I asked if there was an estimate of total cost and was told no. Ok?... I get the call finally at 4:15 my car was ready. I said great, what's my total? Nearly $800, which I expected $700+ for all the work I needed. I verified if everything had been done and was told no. One of the locks wasn't done because I apparently said "just the drivers side" when I wrote down drivers lock and drivers side passenger on my notes to the mechanic at drop off. Basically both left locks needed repair. I double checked my note for errors and nope, it said both locks. I was asked if I'd like to keep it there for the remaining maintenance and by then I was already annoyed and declined stating I needed my car and expected all of my list to be completed, which it wasn't. Upon reviewing my receipt from them it did state "all" on the repair list so I don't know what the miscommunication was between the note and the mechanic. I also got a $30 add on for a break light bulb replacement, which I didn't ask to get repaired. It needed a new bulb, which I could of done myself (and I change myself all the time) for a fraction of the cost! I was told by friends and family they call and keep you up to date, which they did not. They added on a repair which wasn't on my list and then disregarded one of the repairs I did request. So no, I am not happy. No, I will not return. read more

Had a metallic clunk in the front end of my car. Took it in and was diagnosed with worn out front sway bar links. This was replaced for $300+ dollars and the next day driving I noticed the clunk was still there. Took it back to the shop and they told me that "they had not tightened the new links enough." No charge, but I feel like tightening to spec should not be something that is missed when it is the only work being done on the vehicle. read more

(Keep in mind the vehicle had no apparent issues prior to the inspection other than needing tires). Took my 10 year old, mechanically neglected car into Big O's on a Monday. I complained that the heat was low, the rear window wiper wasn't working, it needed an oil change, and that the car was vibrating when in gear. Said it probably needed a tune up. Was called later that day, told nothing was wrong with it, they did an oil change and added some fluids. To fix the wiper, they quoted me $950 to fix the Smart Junction Control Module under the center shift console. When I picked it up, they again said that there was nothing wrong with it, no vibration at all. The guy helping me (manager?) confirmed that they took it for a test drive and found nothing wrong....So they charged me $198.25 for an oil change and fluid check! Two days later, the check engine light came on. Knowing better, I did NOT take it to Big O's. I took it to a REAL mechanic, and complained of exactly the same things. Here's what the REAL mechanic identified, that I kinda knew about but didn't think were a problem or that it could be fixed. Again, Big O's didn't notice ANY OF THIS. Brakes were shot (the brakes pulsated like crazy!) It was leaking in a couple places (my driveway looks terrible) The serpentine belt was squeaking (annoying!) It had trouble shifting gears (scary on the highway) The fuel filter was bad (I was having to put in gas a dollar at a time). Here's what they fixed: The wiper was a FUSE ($20! Remember, Big O's quoted me $950!) They ACTUALLY took it for a test drive Changed the spark plugs Oil change Replaced the O2 sensor Gave it a tune up Brakes & Rotors Identified the source of the fluid leaks (engine and transmission) Changed out the belt that was squeaking Replaced the crankshaft seal (one of the leaks) Flushed the rear differential twice (it was ORIGINAL, 10-year-old fluid and had metal shavings in it) Replaced the transaxle fluid (that's why it was jerking when shifting) Because they were so awesome, I also bought a set of tires from them. My old beater car runs like a top now. There's a mechanic near Old Seward and Huffman that works out of a gas station. That's the place to go. A mechanic is supposed to diagnose and fix problems. Big O's did neither. They charged me $198.25 for an oil change and fluid check that I could have got at Jiffy Lube for $50. read more

One of the best car repair experience I've ever had. I called when they opened today to get an appointment for brake work. I was told to come in and they would try to fit me in. I arrived there and was greeted very friendly. I explained the reason for repair and was willing to wait knowing it was short notice. My car was taken in quickly and they even offered to drop me at home. I stayed around and the scope of work was explained to me. It was completed fairly quickly and there was no push for any type of extra work. Past experience with other repair places they really try to add on work. It was so nice and stress free. They did great work but they were too far away from where I live. I chose to go to a couple shops closer by and have regretted it. They did fine work but I never got the feeling that I was their number one priority. The straw that broke the camels back, was an experience with a local dealership. I recently bought a used truck and wanted it to be inspected. I also brought it in for the close location and their brand specific "expertise" in hopes to find a new reliable mechanic. I've never been involved in a place were they go after your money so aggressively. Needless to say it went downhill from there, but this is not about them. After that experience, I searched for top Anchorage auto shops and near the top sat Big O's. Remembering my earlier experience, I came running back. I've now been involved with Big O's on 4 separate occasions and all have been an excellent experience. Take a chance and visit them, I promise the moment you walk in you will feel welcome. I'm really not sure how Big O's has received so many awards and accommodations, because when I walked in I felt very unwelcome and uncomfortable. I had scheduled a "tune up" inspection the week before and I informed the man on the phone (who was VERY pleasant) that I couldn't be there until 4:30 due to my job. He was very understanding and said it wouldn't be a problem. When I came in the following week the man at the desk asked me if I was picking up or dropping off and I said neither; I had an appointment to get a quote on what repairs I needed. The man proceeded to get angry with me and he told be that they closed in an hour and asked how I expected them to do anything on my truck when I came in at 4:30. I replied that I had called and made an appointment and the man on the phone said that Big O's could do it. He then grabbed their "appointment list" OUT OF THE TRASH!! It was all crumbled up and had my appointment on it. What the HECK??!! He was then rude and stand-offish the whole time to me and treated me like I didn't know anything about cars. He was rude and sexist and I really deserve an apology for my mistreatment. No thanks Big O's...get it together!! read more

My cars O/D light came on when I was driving. Calle then about the issue and said they be able to take my car in on Friday. Friday comes around and they said they don't do transmissions. Last year I moved to Anchorage and was having some issues with my 2007 Chevy Silverado. After looking at reviews online, I decided to take it in to Big O's because they had excellent reviews. My experience with them was mixed. The staff was professional and the shop was really nice. However, after taking a look at my truck I was hit with an almost $3000 estimate for the work needed on my truck (replaced alternator, battery, among other things). I decided to do a little research to view all of my options and after calling and speaking with the local Chevy Dealership I was informed that my issue was most likely my throttle position sensor. I decided to replace this myself and have had zero issues since. I was told by Big O's that if I didn't get the work done my truck wouldn't be running at all very soon. While I don't doubt they are able to provide excellent service, I was able to save myself a ton of money by doing some research myself. You'd expect the professionals to be able to do that for you. read more

I took my Tahoe in to them for a diagnostic. When I picked it up they handed me a list of things wrong with it that equaled about 6, 000$. I then decided to trade for a car that costs much less then the Tahoe. The mechanic I traded my car with told me a few weeks later that the only thing wrong with the Tahoe was a fuel line or something like that. It was something I could of got fixed for a couple of hundred dollars. Thanks O now im out money and my transmission is going out on my new car. I took my truck back to the dealer three times with the same stored CELs & symptoms and they were unable to fix the extremely rough idle with my truck; all-in-all I wasted ~2.5 weeks without the truck because it was at the dealer. Jeff, at the front desk, has been there at least 25 years. They may not be the cheapest auto repair shop in town, but hands down I believe they're the best. The repair estimates are always much better than the dealer shops, and they stick to them. Their work is guaranteed. In the very few instances where I've had to come back with a concern after a repair, the concern is addressed, no charge, period.
