I couldn't get my restored 71 camper bus running right. It was stumbling and spitting and wouldn't rev up very high. Admittedly, it had sat in my backyard for 35 years undriven. Wayne and his mechanic Carlos dialed in the problems right away. Wayne noted that the fuel these days contains a lot of methanol so the carbs need to run a bit richer to compensate. Also, he pointed out that since the new engine had chrome moly pushrods instead of the stock aluminum ones, you need to set the valve clearance at zero instead of .004". Aluminum expands and contracts more due to temperature. Finally, the timing needed a slight adjustment from stock too. He also warned me the old rubber fuel lines may not be compatible with modern gas and to keep an eye on them and replace them if needed. Bottom line is she runs perfectly now so I'm happy. You can count on Wayne to know it all about old VWs but also, he knows how to keep them running in modern times too. read more

Took my bus in and was told that engine need to be rebuilt and or a new engine could be put in. Carlos one of their mechanics advised me that he had an engine for sale and recommended it. I went with his recommendation. The engine was put in and I drove off. The same day the engine was revving really high and was not running smooth at all. Took it back in he adjust some stuff but was also toldI had to spend almost another 1k on top of the almost 5k I spent before to get it running better. Bottom line I spent almost 5 k took it in 3 times and been waiting for response from Carlos to see if they can fix the problem. Haven't been able to drive my bus for about 2 months. Should have went somewhere else from the get go. I use the bus for My business and haven't been able to use it since I went to A & D buggies. Took my Baja to Wayne because I just couldn't get my dual carbs to run right. Wayne knew exactly what was required, and set me up to bring it in and drop off. Running much better but had a little stumble around 2200rpm, so Wayne had me bring it back so he could make it right for me. Honest guy, and reasonable rates. The guys at A&D buggies are great!! I had Wayne and his crew build a new engine for my daughters 63bug. They increased the HP by doubled what it was, hooked up the heater so it now has a defroster and replaced rear shocks They also did some extra things that needed to be fixed and nothing was done until they called and got approval. The car runs GREAT!! Gets up to 90mph on fwy with lots of throttle left. After 700miles they adjusted valves and changed oil as part of the engine rebuild. I would recommend A&D buggies to anyone. Had a new oil pump installed and when I changed the oil I found sealant in the oil. This can clog important engine parts and cause engine to become oil starved and damage your motor. I found sealant smothered all around the mating surfaces around the oil pump. When installing vw oil pumps very little sealant is needed if any. Wayne is an amateur.. read more

I got another 1915cc engine built by Wayne and within the first week the right carb caught on fire. It took them 3 1/2 weeks to fix the engine. It seems my bug gets a little less original when I take it there. Near my hand break the heater and air used to be red and white. Now both sides are black. Even though they are not connected, I still wanted that part. I don't recommend leaving your car with them overnight. read more

While it was there they showed me a problem with my wire harness, I gave them the go ahead to fix it and to also clean it up a as best as they could. i Tell you they did more then just clean it up! Never again. I only took my 74 bug here because I'm new to the area and was looking for a new mechanic so I thought I'd give this place a shot. It has been in storage for several years. I took it in for a tuneup (oil change, spark plugs, etc) and asked them to check for anything else. They called and wanted to put an electronic ignition on and replace some hoses, so I authorized the additional work. I picked it up, paid almost $400, and really didn't think it was running all that great. But since I hadn't driven it in a few years, I figured I just was used to "new cars" so I headed home. It was running worse than ever and was even back-firing, so I decided to check my fuel filter to see if my tank had rust in it again. The fuel filter was nowhere to be found now. Called A&D and they didn't know, said they must have relocated it from the engine compartment for safety [insert thinking emoji here]. So I looked allllll over the undercarriage and couldn't find it. I needed to get my brakes done, so I decided to just drive out to my old shop in San Bernardino so they could fine tune it since A&D failed and apparently misplaced my fuel filter. The SB shop asked when I last had a tuneup and I told them like 2 months before but I'd only driven it like 4 times since. They said that the spark plugs looked extremely old and it was impossible they had just been replaced. Furthermore, there was NO fuel filter anywhere. Completely removed. A&D didn't ask me, didn't even mention it. Just removed it and disposed of it. And when A&D installed the electronic ignition, they left the wires resting in the wrong area and they got melted. So I had to pay the SB shop to re-do a tuneup and install another electronic ignition. Running perfect now! Don't take your car here! Message me if you want to know about the SB shop. read more

Let me start off by saying that I have never, in my life, written one bad review, but this establishment practically begged me to sign up and write one! A&D Buggies is the ABSOLUTE WORSTTT CLASSIC VOLKSWAGEN ESTABLISHMENT in the South Bay. ZERO STARSSS! NEGATIVE STARSS! (they do not deserve 1 star) These guys are unprofessional, inconsiderate, do not make the necessary repairs to get your Bug back on the road. Lets go over unprofessional I asked for a receipt for my business transaction and the owner wrote it down on a post it! ON A POST IT!!! These people put 1 of 4 claps back on to my hot air exchange cooling system, and then just stopped and didn't even bother to put the other 3 clamps (which I paid for!). If I had not taken a look under the hood, I would have broken down somewhere on my way to work or school! When I came back at 5:40 everyone was gone except Peter and he said we close at 6 and walked away, they are thoughtless, uncaring, selfish and unsympathetic. This is not an establishment where they conduct business transactions and expect a standard of balanced reciprocity these people TAKE YOUR MONEY! They charged me $60 to put one clamp on and "adjust" my clutch which still laying on my floor. I called back to tell Wayne the owner about this and he HUNG UP ON ME!! (I didn't bother calling back) Don't let these terrible, careless, negligent and down right BAD MECHANICS fool you with their nice guy act, they don't care about you, your Volkswagen and its apparent in the quality of their work they don't care about genuinely fixing your car and/or doing it the right way. Do not under any circumstances take your bug to this place! You might as well just open your trunk(hood) and kick your engine and charge yourself 60 bucks because thats exactly what A&D Buggies did to me! BOTTOM LINE! My purpose is to inform all my fellow Volkswagen enthusiasts and car guys to steer clear from the filthy waters that is formally known as A&D Buggies. Whether I paid $1 or $1000, I did not write this review because I lost 60 bucks, I want make sure no one else ever goes here to experience there appalling customer service and horrendous mechanical standards for your prized and treasured Bug (or bus). NEVER GO HERE! I love cars and Bugs I don't want anyone with a Bug, Bus, lawnmower, or even remote control car to go to these people. Being a woman driving an older car, some might expect that I might be taken for a ride when my beloved Toots (1972 VW Super Beetle) needs service. I can honestly say that I was treated with respect and kindness each time I've walked in. When Toots was leaking gas and just generally not acting right, I took her to Wayne to see what was up. With a little work, we thought we had fixed her up. Same issue started a day or two afterwards, and I took her back to see Wayne. He found the real problem, and only charged me for the required parts. Who does that?? Although Toots isn't my daily driver anymore and doesn't need serviced as frequently, I feel great knowing I can take her to A&D. read more

I don't even know where to begin to tell you how incredible this place is. I have two old classic VW buses that I've been bringing to A and D buggies for over 2 years. I live in Santa Monica but drive 22 miles or have my bus's towed there because I don't trust anyone else to work on my cars. . Wayne and the his guys( Rick and Brandon) have always taken care of me with the highest level of professionalism and customer care. They have been in business for over 30 years for a reason, because their work is top notch and they're just all around good, honest hard working guys. Out of the 10 plus times I've been here I've never had an issue with any of their work. I've had everything done From an engine being rebuilt to head lights being replaced. I've actually called Wayne numerous times on the phone telling him about a problem I had with one or the other of my buses and he has always given me help over the phone and many times I was able to fix the problem by myself, he's always been there for me. Before I became a loyal customer I used to shop around for prices and his were always consistently lower or very competitive. I'll never take my VW buses anywhere else, he could charge twice as much and i would still go there. and if you want the best mechanic in LA call them, you'll be glad you did.
