Although I moved from CA about 22 years ago, I wanted to add my comments on A&E Automotive. Ron took very good care of me and my T-Bird. I have several experiences to share. At one time my car had to be towed to a dealer for a covered repair. The tow truck driver started to hook the car up by the front. Ron said, "No. It needs to be towed from the rear." The tow truck driver said, "I always tow from the front." And Ron said, "And I repair the transmissions. Tow it from the rear." Then Ron asked if I was comfortable riding with the tow truck driver. I was hesitant. Ron drove me to work. Another time, knowing that I drove alone to Mammoth about every other weekend, he asked if I had a cell phone to call for help if needed. I did not. He suggested that I get one. I would not have to sign up with a cell phone company, just keep the phone charged, and if I had a problem on the drive, I could just dial 911 for help. Later, when he knew I was moving, driving cross country, he gave me all of his contact info in case I had a car problem and didn't feel comfortable with what I was being told. I went in today on another mechanic's recommendation (a mechanic who was recommended to me, but who only works on Honda's, and I have a Ford). I was concerned about an undercarriage squeak, and after Ron took it for a spin (with me in the car) he said that it's nothing to be alarmed about. But if it got worse I could come back. All in all it was not a life-threatening or dangerous squeak. Back at the shop I had them replace 2 lights for me (since I was at a Ford mechanic, they had the parts & I'm too lazy to go to Auto Zone & do it myself). Once they had it up on the lift they looked for squeaking/rubbing part and oiled one area of the car. Labor for the 2 light replacements was about 20 minutes - $27... so worth it. I can't give them 5 stars, because they didn't actually fix anything for me. If I go back (which I can't see why I wouldn't), and they do a good job I will update this to 5 stars. There isn't a better mechanic than Mike out there. He's done awesome work on my car and he's honest about what needs to be replaced vs giving exorbitant quotes for something you don't need. I went to another independent shop to get my valve cover gaskets replaced and see what was up with the Check Engine light. That shop gave me a $1700 quote to replace my cat. I told em I'd be back when I could afford it. A little over a year later, I went to A&E to possibly replace my starter. He checked out the Check Engine problem and realized it was the same problem as the starter. He replaced a $10 part - a temperature sensor that was bad - that was causing extra fuel to dump into the cat. He saved me over $1600. I go to Mike for everything that his shop can take care of. Went to A&E a few years back to have the brakes check on my wife's Dodge Durango after seeing another mechanic who wanted over a $1000 with out even looking the brakes. couldn't get out of there fast enough. I live in Canyon Country and first took my 2003 Mustang to A & E Automotive when a shop near my house told me the head gaskets were blown and they were going to charge me $4,000 to repair it. A very reliable source recommended I take it to A & E so that they can give me a second opinion. I did and it turned out that it was overheating because the cooling fan and thermostat needed to be replaced. They saved me thousands of dollars. They are extremely knowledgeable about the vehicle. When they started the car both Ron and Mike knew immediately that it wasn't the head gaskets. That was almost a year ago and I have taken it there ever since. Not just for the big items, but for all the services needed on the vehicle. They are always extremely helpful, upfront and honest about the work they are going to do. They have always let me know what needs to be done now and what can wait until the next service. I never feel like they are pressing me into repairs that are not necessary. It's a long way from Canyon Country to Pasadena for a car repair, but so worth the trip. read more

I had to get the motor mounts changed on my van. My normal mechanic had quoted a price so high it kept me from changing them out for months. We brought in a '91 Mustang which wouldn't start. A&E diagnosed a bad fuel pump and leaky power steering. After a great deal of consideration (and an assurance that, once fixed, the car would "run and run"), we decided to get it fixed for $1300. It worked long enough to get it home, but then started working intermittently. We brought it back, and they replaced the igniter/ignition coil for another $300 (for parts; they threw in the labor) and cleaned off some of the accumulated PS fluid. It was better, but still died on the road sometimes. Six months later it got too expensive to continually tow and repair, and we junked it. The part that bothers me the most is that they assured me that, after $1300, the car would be working. After I brought it back, they said that actually there was no way to tell. If he had told me that *before* I spent the $1300, I would have junked the car and spent my money on something newer. This was a waste of a LOT of money that I really needed. read more

I was originally recommended to A&E from Accurate, where my wife had been taking her Toyota (I drive a Ford). These guys run a good, honest business. A few months ago, I had some noise under the hood that I figured was the water pump. Ron and Mike explained how they would diagnose the noise source and determined that it was the water pump and the tensioner pulley. They got everything done by EOD so I could still pick up my son from childcare on time. Had coolant leaking from the front of my Cevy Tahoe so I brought it to A & E to have it looked at. Ron charged me $40 to tell me I needed a new water pump and said it would be $600 to replace it. I've had 4 water pumps replaced on several cars over the years and no one has ever charged me to diagnose it and each time I paid between $300 and $400. Maybe a Chevy water pump is more expensive or the prices have gone up since my last one, so I called around and all the quotes were still around $300-$400 for OEM parts and labor. read more

Wow! I went to the garage I've been using for the last four years to get a headlight fixed. I asked them to go ahead and do an oil change while I was there, since it was about time. They did the oil change, but forgot to fix my headlight (even when I REMINDED them). I was really worrying about driving with one headlight, and one of my friends referred me to A & E. I stopped by, and they said it would just take a couple minutes to change out the headlight (it did). While I was waiting, I told the owner (Ron is AWESOME!) that my air conditioner wasn't putting out much cold air. They checked the air conditioner function, and added some Freon. When I got back in the car to leave, it BLEW FREEZING AIR AT ME. It was 100 degrees yesterday, and the cold air was so welcome. I was only there about 15 minutes. They fixed two problems, and the price was so REASONABLE. I'd go back to them any time, for any problem ... honest, ethical, and efficient ... what a combination! read more
