Philip is fantastic! The check engine light came on in our Genesis G70, and while we suspected it might be recall-related, the dealership wanted to charge over $300 just to diagnose it. Philip quoted me $160 instead, so I took the car to him. When I dropped it off, he even offered me a ride home so I wouldn't have to walk several miles. When I returned, he explained that the issue was with the fuel pump and advised me to have it replaced at the dealership under the recall--meaning it would be free. I find it uneasy whenever there is a repair to be done on my car as I am at the mercy of the person doing the diagnostics. Phil said he would check out my car and let me know. I wish I could recommend this shop, but unfortunately, my experience was not a positive one. I spent about about $1800 to ultimately have another, more qualified shop do a proper diagnostic and tell me that a new engine was needed. I brought my car here in November 2024. Phil quoted me nearly $1400 for an initial repair to fix a no start condition; where 4 spark plugs, mas airflow sensor, 2 coils, and an intake manifold gasket set were replaced. Unfortunately, this was a bandaid solution, as I was only able to drive my car a few miles home, before I experienced the same issues. I had the car taken back to the shop a second time, when they recommended a tensioner replacement, for an additional cost of $350. My mistake was taking it back a second time. When I went to pick up my car from the second repair, I could tell immediately that they had a hard time starting it. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I took it home, when again, it didn't start the next day, this time, making a horrible sound that it wasn't making before. We told Phil about this, and he told us to bring it back in. At this point, I had run out of AAA tows and definitely didn't trust their diagnostic techniques. We went back to the shop to try to get things resolved. The one positive part of the experience is that dealing with Alex was always pleasant. From the beginning, we asked them to do a compression test, and Phil said it wasn't needed. Well, that was what the other shop ended up doing, which ultimately led to a proper diagnosis, as you will see in the attached photo. Instead, Phil and his team kept throwing parts at it. Phil did offer to refund the labor charges, and for that, I can cut them a little slack, but I'm still out around $1000 on useless parts and I still don't have a working car. I can, however, recommend the second shop I took it to, Seiko's, located in Monrovia, for any Japanese car. They were extremely thorough in their diagnostic processes. read more

I drove through a section of deep water during yesterday's rains (didn't see it) and my engine light immediately came on afterwards. My stomach was in knots all evening imagining all the damage I had done to my vehicle. If you are a woman and afraid of being unfairly charged, or afraid of any unethical business practices taking place--Phil, Owner of Crown Automotive Repair is the mechanic for you!!! I literally cannot comprehend the recent 1 star review, (dated 8/5/22), because it is COMPLETELY contrary to my experience. Phil and his assistant are personable, even taking time to chat with me and get to know me--a rarity in the automotive industry! For me, it's all about relationship, in my business affairs. It's important to me that people that I do business with care about me and my affairs. My soon-to-be ex-husband always handled my car repairs, given the limited knowledge I have about cars. I was referred to Phil by another great mechanic who was outsourcing what I needed fixed: replacement of spark plugs, replacement of a valve cover gasket with tube seals, my cooling system flushed and coolant added. Phil and his team fixed all of that, at a fair price. I was so paranoid that I'd be taken advantage of; I googled each repair to see the price range. Phil gave me more than a fair price!!! But Phil was honest and said the problem of the car not starting may still not be fixed. (I don't speak "Mechanic", but at the time, he fully explained why... and I even ran Phil's explanation by a friend who knew cars and my friend said it was accurate). After my car failed to start, Phil patiently explained why, and advised me to keep an eye on it over the weekend. Yesterday the engine light came on--and serendipitously I was literally down the street from the shop. So I brought it in, asked Phil to run the computer on it quickly (because the light goes off just as quickly!) Phil and his also very nice assistant, got the code and they are working on it now! I had several issues arise with my car. First had something to do with emissions. Thankfully while checking Phil's team uncovered that my breaks were at 10%- YIKES! So although it was not an inexpensive repair, at least it was caught. However one week later I smell gas. Phil asks me to bring it back-right away, and there's a gas tank leak- Phil went to bat with the extended warranty company and for 2 hours battled them. They do all of my oil changes, brakes, coolant flush, transmission fluid changes, and few other things. Phil the owner always give me a estimate in writing and has been very fair with his prices and stands behind his work. I was even low on oil in my Porsche and he told me stop by and topped it off with 1 quart and I was on my way in 15 mins. There are many automotive repair and service shops in Pasadena, but not all have fair prices and quality work.
