I have been a customer since 1988 and Mr. Jack and his mechanics have been honest, sincere, and provided great service for the last 3 vehicles I've had. What I appreciate about Mr. Jack is that he hears me and is patient. Earlier this year there were engine issues. He told me they were unable to fiix and suggested I go to the dealer. There were issues but each time I inquired with Mr. Jack, he gave sound advice that I discussed with the dealer. Finally years ago I had a Chevette and it had over 252 thousand miles on it. Instead of milking me for repairs It was suggested that I get a new vehicle and that he would not take money from me as the vehicle served me well. I find it very humorous that the description of services claim "complete automotive repair." I drove to two prior places to get a multiple opinions on one tire that I had to replace due to placement of a nail that was unable to be repaired. Both places, mind you, took the time to look at it and gave me a quote. As for this place, I decided to pull in and ask them for their opinion since I literally live a block away. Who doesn't love convenience? They had ONE car being serviced with ONE customer. As I approached, he asked, "How can I help you?" I answered, "I need your opinion on a nail in my tire." Before I could even explain that I was looking for a potential new tire, an oil change, and brake service, he put his finger up and rudely said, "Nope. I can't do that right now," while he shook his head! He absolutely seemed inconvenienced. My car was only 10 feet away. Not one look or suggestion. Nothing. Customer service at its worse. I went in without an appointment because there was a sudden issue with my car where an expected noise was coming from my front left wheel. Troy, one of the owners, immediately looked at the problem, and with the assistance of Robert, diagnosed, and fixed the issue. There was basically trash that got stuck and melted in the crevices of the rotor. They fixed it within 30 minutes and did not even charge me. Can't say enough about J&G Auto in Pasadena. When you drive an older car pushing 270K miles you expect that you will need repairs done periodically. I left my house noticed a small puddle of anti-freeze under my car. Stopped at a local shop who told me I have a small leak and to bring it back Monday. I drove to the supermarket next to J&G and notice a huge puddle of anti-freeze all over the place. I drove to J&G it was a Saturday at 11am. They were quick to diagnose the problem, which was my water pump. They replaced a the Radiator, per my request. The water pump, hoses and timing belt. Along with a bunch of gaskets that were also leaking. Plus an oil change. Long story short, they had the car ready to go by Monday 3PM in perfect working order. The price Jack quotes me was awesome. I'm a return customer, I normally take my truck to 2 places in Pasadena and both are incredible. My personal experience was 5 stars all the way! I'd give a 6th Star if yelp allowed it! read more

So, for context, this ol' poet just finished driving 2,108 miles from Minneapolis to Pasadena in 72 hours and some change in a 2008 Sienna which had previously driven to Seattle, Montana, Chicago and so on in a similar run, as poets do. Long story short, this last leg was the straw that broke the camel's back apparently when the brakes began to screech like a steel pterodactyl being skinned alive, and knew it was time to get them looked at. It wasn't my ideal way to spend Black Friday, but Troy and his top-notch team took a look with me and showed me how close to death I was driving with my brake pads and 0% and most of my rotors shot. Thankfully, they could fit me in right away and showed me as fair a price on short notice as you could ask for. They've been at this for over 40 years and it's a solid team with a good attitude, professional, and ready to demonstrate what you need. Fast, affordable, easy to work with, conveniently located and you can even walk to a nearby restaurant or with a little more hoofin' get to the nice parts of town while they're working on it. I got really lucky with J & G Auto Service. As a female I found them very respectful. They looked at my car while I was there and told me what they thought the problem was and what the costs could be. I got a call shortly after confirming that I needed a new starter and it looked like the fly wheel had been damaged. They ended up doing a bit of labor intensive work on the fly wheel so I would not have to buy a new one. I was only charged for the starter and made it to my family on time! read more

I am off to a happy start this morning. I was quoted by Discount Tire Center to have my rear brakes and rotor/drums replaced. I couldn't afford it at the time but today I am ready to go. I stopped at J & G first cause they have good reviews and also to see if they could give me a better price than Discount Tire Center. They told me the rotor/drum are fine and could be resurfaced not replaced. Also, the brake shoes still had another year before they needed replacing. So, with the cost of parts, J & G saved me from spending over $300 that I didn't need to. I also went in because my check engine light went on. Of course, I thought the worst. This light doesn't go on unless there is a possible major problem. They ran a diagnostic and found the problem was my gas cap was not giving a tight seal and was possibly letting fumes escape. The gas cap!!! Can you believe it. I know if I took my car some place else I would be racking a huge repair bill. This is the most honest place I have ever found. I would almost be willing to drive across the country to go to a mechanic like this one. read more

Dr. Green I am a senior citizen who has been driving almost 50 years. I have bought lots of cars in my life, both used and new, and I have tried my best to maintain and service them. Recently, I have turned to dealerships to perform these tasks. When it was time to change the oil and service my 2004 Toyota Tacoma, I took it to a dealership. Before I was out of there, they had tried to "upsell" me an entirely new front end suspension ($8,000). Since I only paid $6,000 for the car, I was not interested. I took it to J & G Auto Service where I met Jack and his son Troy. These are two of the most helpful and honest businessmen I have come across. Integrity must run in their family. My oil was changed and the car was serviced. Before leaving I asked Jack about the front end. He confirmed that it was a mess and that my 7 year old tires I put on when I bought the car, were the incorrect size. I was once again ready to offer a polite "no thanks" when Jack gave me the quote. I left with the car serviced, the front end and all shocks completely redone, and a new set of tires. The bill...$2,800. My 14 year old work truck drives like a new car. read more

Ramsey and Jack are the best of the best. Honest, kind, and preternaturally skilled at what they do. After just relocating to Pasadena from Los Angeles, I had a lot of apprehension about locating a good (and upright!) mechanic. So finding these guys was like walking into an automotive Shangri-La . . . on Walnut and Wilson. Who'da thunk? I've got a 2003 Toyota Echo---great little car, but lately it's been squealing like a pipsqueak and my tires were so slick you could practically skate on them. Ramsey gave me a full scale of options, happily working with me to put on four great (and affordable) new tires. I feel like I'm riding a mile higher than I was a few days ago. They also turned my rotor and exchanged my pads for an incredibly competitive price. When they took it out for a test drive, they noticed it was still a little squeaky; they put it back up in the garage and discovered the water pump was in an embarrassing state of decline. They called to let me know before moving forward (in fact they called me every step of the way, which I very much appreciated). That's the call no one ever wants to get from their mechanic ("oh no! more money!")---and yet, they handled it so professionally, I hung up the phone grateful to have their expertise and not at all resentful. When I went in to pick the car up, they showed me my old water pump. It was bad. Bad to the (metal) bone. I'm headed to San Francisco next week, and they saved me considerable expense and hassle by fixing it *before* my car overheated and stranded me on the side of the 5. In the end, Jack gave me a great bargain on all the repairs, and I walked out having spent less than I had feared. They were a joy to do business with from beginning to end. Might I also add: two days before, my boyfriend had taken his VW to a shop down the street, and walked out THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS poorer. (He still took me out to dinner last night; what a mensch.) Moral of the story? Toyotas are better than Volkswagens. Second moral of the story? I'll never take my car anywhere but J&G again! read more

STAY VERY FAR AWAY FROM THIS MECHANIC SHOP !!! I was recently referred to this shop from Hrant Auto in Pasadena for some suspension work on a used car. i got there early before the shop opened and spoke to the owner of the shop, upon arrival i let them know that i was referred to them by Hrant. They said "We will take care of you". The owner took the car for a test drive along with me. we could feel a few squeaks that i knew about and i told him to take the car over potholes to make sure he knew all the problems about the car, he said he cant take it any far since his son was at the shop alone, i felt it was like detecting the issue only half way through. but it was ok he was the mechanic and i thought he knew what i was talking about. Back at the shop as his mechanics arrived, they jacked up the car and started taking a look under it. initially they said nothing seemed wrong with it but since we could see something was making the noise in suspension, they have to look further. he wanted me to drop the car off while they keep investigating (and keep the billing meter ON), I Insisted that i have nothing else to do for the entire day and i would be staying there. they kept looking and could figure out the problem then in 10-15 minutes. Now comes the fun part.. They prepared a laundry list of items suddenly and he called some parts vendor to check up on the parts and pricing for those. he said it was very difficult to find the parts for this make/model of the car and proceeded to describe the problems to me. He went over them with me and i asked the price for parts. I was aware of the pricing for most of the parts since i had been doing my own research on the pricing of the parts based on what could probably be needed to be replaced. to my surprise the pricing of the parts he was quoting me were about double or 2.5 times the price i knew i can order online in about 10-15 minutes. so getting the parts from him was the first deal breaker. that started telling me how honest he was going to be with the entire process. I told him i will get my own parts. He said ok. if i bring my own parts the labor would be $$$$$$$$. The cost of labor i feel like was double the amount based on my thorough knowledge of the amount of time each of the replacement parts could take. 4 major components would take 4 hours and some smaller components would take 1 hour. upon telling me the labor cost and looking at the fact that i am not in acceptance to the price. he said he has other customers in his tire shop to attend to and would just leave. i immediately took it to another shop, to diagnose and repair the problem and it turned out i only needed to change 2 parts (instead of about 8 suggested by J & G) and the total cost of parts & labor at the other place turned out to be about 40% of the entire cost J&G auto was planning to charge me for. I would suggest anyone and everyone to stay away from J&G auto in Pasadena, These guys are fully interested in changing parts that may or may not be needed at that point of time to make an extra buck and jack up the prices on the parts very significantly. The only reason i took the time to write a detailed review since i want to make sure that other get a fair warning before going to this place. Thank you for reading. read more
