Loved the charm of this little place! For starters, there was a small street band performing outside, complete with tuba and washboard--loved it. The smell of fresh roasted peanuts draws you in. They have 100 year old roaster that seems to be going nonstop. They also offer boiled peanuts and an assortment of other types/flavors of nuts. They have a candy case which can also be bought in bulk, like the peanuts. There is even a wall of candy behind the counter with more sweet treats and chocolates. They have fresh hot popcorn, which is what I have a hard time saying no to! Their prices are reasonable. I highly recommend buying a small bag of peanuts or popcorn then walking over to Bienville Square across the street. You can feed the squirrels right out of your hand while you sit under the huge shade trees and listen to the fountain. It was the highlight of my afternoon! read more

I first came to the A&M Peanut Shop as a child in the 1970s when I visited my Grandfather downtown, and I have continued this tradition for 5 decades. I no longer live in Mobile, but every time I come "home" I make a visit and get my Cajun Peanuts, my roasted pumpkin seeds, my pralines, my chocolate candies and more. This little place has been around forever.... when I was a kid, it was the place to go with your Dad on a Saturday. I miss the Peanut Man that use to stand outside - and I understand he is tucked away in storage - bring him back, even if you have to enclose him in a glass case. HE IS the Peanut Shop. Messed up our order big time...gave us 4 bags of sugary chocolates which we did not order (neither my husband nor me can eat sugar) and didn't give us the sugar free pecan clusters and Brazilian nuts we did order. This was a fun shop! It's an old-style place; a real candy shop. The staff is friendly and attentive, the chocolate is good, and there are enough kinds candy, nuts and chocolate to please any kid. It's a nice place to stop in for a treat, or to buy a gift to take home. I recommend it. read more

This is a pretty good restaurant. You can get you all different kinds of peanuts. Cashew peanuts. Pecan peanuts. Chocolate peanuts. Don't nobody care. I had not ever went to this restaurant so I just asked the peanut man and he said get the peanuts that is hot so I did. And a cokecola. It was pretty good. Cute little shop in downtown Mobile. Found it by accident and went in. Seems to employ the local teens in the area and that's a big plus for me. I bought some cashew nuts and some other candy. All were good. Will visit again when I am in Mobile as I love to support local businesses. read more

Great place for really good roasted Peanuts, I use to go every Saturday morning to the Market on the Square, then buy a bag of Un-salted roasted nuts and take them to Beinville Square to feed the squirrels, That was until our WONDERFUL MAYOR STIMPSON, made it a law that you could no longer feed the squirrels, because they were eating the flowers? well they were eating the flowers because no one was feeding them DUH! If you are staying in Downtown Mobile for any reason - you're on business - you're catching the cruise ship - any reason at all - go get some peanuts at A&M - right off Bienville Square. Now...................are their peanuts really something to brag about? Well - ABSOLUTELY they are - or they wouldn't have been here as long as they have. I have no idea why - but these are the best roasted peanuts you'll find anywhere. But I am biased and I'll tell you why. This is a true - local - tradition. If you've read any of my other reviews - you will quickly learn - I avoid chain "stuff" at all costs - especially when it comes to EATING - and that includes peanuts. I have the most phenomenal memories of going downtown for a Mardi Gras parade as a kid (longer ago than I want to admit!!!) First - we would go to the Royal Dog House (so sad..........no longer there) - and get the best hot dog (the St Bernard was my choice) money could buy!!! We would sit in Bienville Square and eat our hot dog - then we would walk across to A&M and get fresh roasted peanuts (for dessert I guess???) As we headed back through the Square to secure the PERFECT spot to watch the parade - my Dad would make us stop and share our peanuts with the squirrels. I should mention here that my Dad always planted extra in his garden in case the deer and other animals needed something to eat. At the age of 8 - I didn't understand why I should share my treasured, A&M roasted peanuts with the squirrels (or why he should share his garden with the deer!). But at the age of 50..........OK - I'm going to get teary eyed if I don't stop. Today....................I walk through that Square almost every day when I am not traveling. Today.............my brother takes his grandson (my grand newphew) downtown for the sole purpose of going to A&M. And today...............my home is never without A&M peanuts. I go there at least once a week to grab some peanuts after lunch. I always get enough to bring home.........but more importantly - I always get enough to share with the squirrels as I walk back through Bienville Square to get back to work.
