Nightmare of a company. We brought these guys in to help identify which condenser belonging to my unit and to help troubleshoot it. It took multiple call outs just for them to identify the wrong unit. I helped them power cycle, spent time with them troubleshooting etc. They didn't test scientifically eg with a voltage checker etc. They proceeded to repair the my neighbors units thinking it was mine, and this resulted in them damaging the unit. I was finally able to identify that my condenser unit was in an obscure place with zero help from them. They then proceeded to clean the right unit. Of course they blamed me for telling them the wrong condenser which is a lie and doesn't make sense as that's what we called them in for. This was already a horrible experience for all involved. To make things worse they then decided to bill me for the identification of the unit! Which again, they also admit they didn't do by blaming me for identifying the wrong unit. I said I'd only pay for the cleaning after the hours wasted. When I refused to pay, they sent me to collections. Stay away. They need their license taken away for the safety of us all. read more

Service was great, Danny was the tech sent to our house and he took care of the issue quickly. Billing was decently priced, and scheduling was standard to the past companies we used. Main bonus was the person in the office, always picks up the call right away and can break down the invoice for us. Beyond terrible! Stay Away! They show up at random times if they even show up at all. Avoid addressing issues they created. Avoid updating estimates. Dismantle equipment and won't reassemble on 2 occasions. Emails seem to be composed using speech to text and are mostly unreadable. Dishonest on billing for time then threatens with collections, will let my building and any neighbors know to go with someone else.

For starters, I am actually a supplier to A & W Certified Cooling. I met Steve a few years ago while I was soliciting his business. When I first met him I had no idea that he was the co-owner of the company. He was extremely nice to me and was very receptive. He wound up setting up an account with my company and began to do business with us. I say this because in my line of business you get a lot of people that can be rough around the edges and tend to not treat sales people very fairly. Anyway, fast forward four years and I wake up to my Air conditioner blowing very lightly with barely any cold air coming out of the vents. I run outside to check on my compressor and notice that the motor and lines are frozen solid. I of course panic and shut the system off. A relative who knows a little bit about HVAC tells me to let the system defrost overnight and contact a professional. I thought of contacting a company that I've used in the past, but the last time they came it was for a heating issue that ran us $1100.00. They had to come 3 times for the same problem and each time they sent a different tech with different diagnosis's and parts that needed replacement. I decided to call Steve and ask him if he knew a reputable company that I could contact. I was under the impression that A & W only handled commercial accounts. Steve told me that he would personally come to my home to take a look. He told me that he would swing by at a given time and I made plans to leave work early to meet him. Sure enough, he was at my front door at the time he said he would be. Now my wife and I are germaphobes and we take off our shoes at the front door and don't allow anyone to walk in our home with shoes. I had to let Steve know that he had to wear booties over his shoes before he came in. It's always a bit uncomfortable to ask people to comply especially when they're there to perform a service. Anyway, Steve had no problem taking off and putting on the booties every time he had to come in and out of the house. That alone was going above and beyond. Steve, wound up checking the entire system and concluded that the system was low on Freon. Possibly due to a leak somewhere. Anyway, he added Freon and added a leak sealer to the system. He spent about 1-1/2 hour and answered all my questions and explained everything that he was doing. He was extremely fair with the price. What was much more valuable to me was his honesty and sincerity. It's hard to find people with integrity nowadays. Will definitely call Steve in the future should I need their service again. read more

Had Steve come over a few months back to install an Ecobee 3 smart thermostat and he was great. The Ecobee 3 needed a minimum of three wires (c wire), so Steve ran new cable into the existing conduit so that no wiring was exposed. After cabling, we hooked up the thermostat and all worked fine. Steve stayed on for testing. The installation of the thermostat dangled from the wall, but that was not a fault of Steve, but rather the lack of mounting hardware into an electrical box from Ecobee. Overall wonderful experience with the company and would recommend them again. The pricing was fair, as they charge by the time and they accept credit cards. read more

So it's late Friday afternoon, the Friday before Super Bowl weekend, not to mention about to be the coldest weekend we've had this Winter. The DIYer in me came out and I was trying to test something with the manufacturer of my furnace. Without knowing or realizing I grounded a wire on the control panel of my central unit which then blew a fuse on the furnace. The unit shut off immediately and panic began to set in. First call was to a local company to check on their 24/7 emergency service. You see, Steve works in the 5 boroughs and is only in Westchester if some of his contract business calls for it. Lucky for me he was willing to take multiple phone calls from me to vett the info I got from the local co, and because he didn't like what he heard, he offered to drive the hour+ up to me and check things out first hand. You just don't find that kind of dedication and customer service nowadays. But that's not even the best part, because Steve is honest and fair on top of it. Within minutes he sussed out and replaced the blown fused to get us back up and running. MUCH better alternative than what the local co was suggesting - minimum $600 to replace the furnace's computer, all the way up to possibly $4000 if the computer board couldn't be sourced and we got a new furnace. So glad to know someone like Steve and have A&W on my side. A first class pro who is as expert as you can get in his field. Hire them for your next job with confidence, I know I will. read more

This review is a long time coming and traces back to some work that A&W did a few years ago. In a nut-shell: these guys are miracle workers. Ever since moving into my brand-new condo several years ago, I was plagued by issues with my central HVAC system. Leaks and breakdowns were the norm, and no matter how many HVAC companies I had come and look at it - including one that performed a very costly condenser replacement - nothing worked. Finally, I called A&W out - I picked them completely at random - and miracle of miracles, they fixed everything. Four years later, and I haven't had a single problem. Considering how much money I poured into that damn HVAC system, I can't begin to describe how happy that makes me. They come annually to service the HVAC system. One year, during a stinking hot summer spell, they even agreed to run downstairs to tend to the problems of two other apartments in my building whose HVAC systems were giving them grief (my neighbors were not A&W Cooling customers at the time, and yes, A&W saved the day for them both). Their attention to detail is scary: A&W even keeps a record of my AC filter, which is a weird size and not readily available in stores, and replaces it every year. Call these guys. Several people in my building had used their service in the past, including myself. However this time when we had to replace a part on the air handler at my neighbors apartment, I had to wait many weeks for a service call and once they finally came, they installed the wrong part. It took another month to correct the issue and I had to call them repeatedly. All in all the process took two and was extremely expensive. I would not recommend, they are too busy and office staff is not friendly. read more

Had them install a Nest thermostat. I tried doing it myself but for some reason my HVAC's wiring was off so I couldn't get it working. The thermostat was also a lot smaller than my current once so I wasn't able to figure out how to attack it to the wall since the hole behind the old thermostat was so big. The guy came and fixed whatever the wiring problem was and was able to attach it to the wall with no problems. If I have problems with my HVAC system I'll give them a call. read more

It was January 30th, 2012, and we got home from a trip to find our house -- an old brownstone in Park Slope -- freezing, the boiler unwilling to start, though the pilot light was working. We called an emergency 24/7 plumbing/heating service that we found on the internet. Though they sent someone right away, the guy could not fix it. Out of desperation I called A&W Cooling Systems the following day (Jan.31st!). They had recently installed a NEST thermostat (a relatively new gadget on the market), even though I knew they did not specialize in plumbing and heating but in cooling systems. The owner, Mr.Steven Bonanno, picked up his cell on first ring, and told me that he would be happy to come over but that he was on vacation. He promised that he would get one of his employees. I did not hold out much hope, given that it was the last day of the year and most services come to a standstill. True to his word, Mr.Bonanno called to tell me that he was having a specialist come over but warned me that he was not a specialist on boilers. Nonetheless, he was going to give it a shot. The man arrived within a couple of hours, and after about an hour of trying out different things, he figured out that the transformer in the boiler needed replacing. After replacing it (the fact that he had one in his truck was an incredible bit of foresight), the boiler's been working better than ever. Several times while with us he had to consult with Mr.Bonanno -- who turns out was in Florida. I was incredulous. After all, he could have just as easily said that he can't figure it out, and that we should wait for Mr.Bonanno to get back from his trip. I cannot say enough positive things about a company that is willing to do whatever they can, on New Year's eve day to help you out. We were not old-time customers either. We had spent a freezing night, and were bracing for a very cold new year day. Instead, we landed on the other side of the New Year toasty warm. I cannot recommend this small on-the-ball company highly enough. read more

We started using A&W after the owner of the company who had installed our central AC system retired. They're amazing. We just had to replace the rooftop unit, and Walter Torello was even better than he had been. He bent over backwards to make the job economical and painless.
