    Papa burger!

I recently visited A&W and had an absolutely fantastic experience! From the moment I walked in, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was super clean, non bloody, and the cheese curds were insane!

Sad end of the fast food spectrum. The only things A&W has going for it, root beer floats and deep fried cheese curds.

In general, the Portland metro area doesn't have burgers worth crowing about…read more The old timers will rave about Helvetia Tavern, Skyline, Roake's, Jim Dandy, Mike's Drive In, Fuller's, and Nob Hill burgers. These are various takes on Burger King's Whopper and it's difficult to prove otherwise. Canard's steamed slider? A chef'd up White Castle. Champs, Farmer and the Beast and Tulip Shop? Yes, every city has smash burgers now, congratulations. Wolf's Head? The issue with throwing pork into the mix is some days it's glorious and some days it's the driest burger you'll ever eat. Higgins?! Yes, dad, your $30 bacon cheeseburger was totally worth it and not at all a slightly upgraded McMenamins offering. But Five Stars? I'm genuinely stunned every time Grand Lodge has a show and this place isn't packed. Those who know treasure it, and those who lack the patience are missing out. There's enough commentary on the spartan interior and the counter-and-drink-cooler aesthetic, but the important detail is the note to customers to the right of the register: Your meal is going to take time. It's going to be perhaps 20 to 40 minutes. It will not come out before that time. If you are in a hurry, please go elsewhere. They say this as straightforwardly as they can: They would rather have the time to prepare your meal correctly and sell fewer burgers than churn out nonsense to more customers. Armed with that knowledge, I ordered a bulgogi cheeseburger, took my drink, and settled in to watch the traffic. On a weekday, my only companions were older couples who'd clearly been coming in for years. About 25 minutes later, the burger arrived on its char-toasted kaiser bun (a rarity out here). On the first bite, I encountered both flavor and texture I could only compare to a wagyu-based take on a Big Mac that I'd sampled at a Chicago culinary festival. The patty melted into a near pate, while the bulgogi blended with the cheese into a complementary umami flavor that chains like Umami Burger never quite achieved and local spots like Mr. Bento seem too focused on speed and volume to prepare correctly. I am absolutely late to the party here and realize that countless influencers, food critics, car clubs, and Western Washington County regulars have already made 5 Stars an overwhelming success. But that "best in Oregon" claim isn't just a tilted Yelp score or foodie hyperbole: It's a whole lot of time and effort paying off in a product worth the expense. 5 Star unquestionably makes the best burger in this state, but it's the care taken by the family behind it and the genuine love of the community surrounding it that separates it from the crowd. P.S. I can't believe the former owner of Piattino left a bad review. What would I rather do with my life: Make food and experiences that people remember months to years later and serve as the basis for comparison to every burger that comes next, or open the 30th reclaimed-barnwood restaurant in town with a forgettable take on the same pizza made by at least three other Portland spots?

Knew it had a cult following but just had not been able to make a stop in until a couple of weekends ago after making a trip to the library that is right down the street. Visited on a Friday lunchtime. We were the only people there at first but the take-out business was jumpin' with calls coming in every few minutes. We waited maybe 20 minutes, which seemed totally fair given the care and attention given to making our order. During the wait perused all the license plates on the wall and watched them work the grill. The owner and his wife plus son (?) were all so friendly. Appreciated their giving us a heads up about how big the food would be and not risk over-ordering. We had a a plain hotdog (with fries) and a plain cheeseburger (with fries) and they were both tasty despite the kids ordering literally the most blah things on the menu. Next time momma will get what she wants!

The café itself is simple, clean, and cozy, with a small outdoor seating area available. Their menu features a variety of sandwiches and burgers to choose from. On a previous visit, I tried the elk burger, which was excellent. This time, I ordered the roast beef sandwich, and it did not disappoint. The bread was lightly toasted, the portion of meat was generous, and the sandwich itself was hearty and satisfying. Service was quick and efficient, making it an ideal spot for a casual lunch. While the space is modest, it is well-maintained and comfortable. They also operate a butcher shop next door, which has become one of my favorite places to purchase quality meats--I plan to review that separately in the future. Overall, I highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

However after my son's baseball team won their District Championship and decided to go there for a celebration dinner, I was like sure, I'll celebrate this! Upon arrival I was surprised on how the restaurant was laid out. I wasn't expecting fancy, but I guess it was pretty casual. After waiting for people to get there i ordered @ the kiosk. I wanted a Diet Coke and a Sprite for my son, but i couldn't switch it before I completed my order, so my son got a little caffeine. After all was said and done, the meal for us was just north of $50. Two burgers, two (small) orders of fries for a crazy price of $4.99/order, and two shakes. For what it was i don't understand why it was so expensive. The burger was a burger. The bacon wasn't crispy and the overall size of the burger was below average. The fries were ok, hot and crispy, but for $5 probably half as many as I would have expected. Finally my son didn't have any complaints about his cookies and cream shake, however I was really confused by my "S'mores" shake. I could make out the chocolate chunks, and the pieces that supposedly were graham crackers. There was absolutely zero sign (or taste) of anything that even resembled marshmallow, which is the whole point isn't it? In closing the kids had a great time...running around in the grass afterwards probably trumped the dinner. I however much prefer Five Guys...their fries and shakes are superior imo as well. I was celebrating the teams win, however the food and pricing gets a "L". Would not return unless they won STATE, and then i would bring Five Guys from across the street.

Unfortunately, my visit today (around 7:00 PM) was very disappointing. I purchased the Milk Cream and Matcha Cream Mochinut Balls and ate them immediately in my car before even leaving the parking lot. Both fillings had almost no sweetness at all, which was very unusual compared to every previous visit. The dough was also much thinner than normal and lacked the soft, chewy texture that I always expect from Mochinut. Overall, the product tasted bland and nothing like what I'm used to. I couldn't continue eating them, so I brought them back into the store and explained to the staff that something seemed abnormal with the product. They listened, but the experience was disappointing, especially since I've consistently had great experiences here in the past. I hope this was just an isolated quality control issue because I'd love to see the consistency return for Franchise Business.
