My wife and I stayed for an anniversary recently and were torn about a few things. I'd like to start by saying the service, manner of the owner and the hospitality is absolutely wonderful. After a brief conversation with Pam the owner I decided I liked her and booked the room. When we arrived, she greeted us and was so amazingly knowledgeable about all of the questions we had about the local attractions. We knew if we needed anything we could bet she knew where who how and when.
The room I asked for and booked was a deluxe queen. When we opened our room, I noticed 2 beds and they seemed like full beds but I assumed there wasn't another option considering every place was booked solid for the labor day weekend. So we simply accepted the room and didn't bring it up. It was a bit awkward because though we realized we were staying at a motel, we had paid about $160 for a room I'm pretty sure rents for $80-$100 off season, but because of the holiday waiting too last minute, also the few rooms left at the nearby hotels were ridiculously inflated at $1000+ a night when we normally would have paid $180- $250, but it was an anniversary so we did at least want to sleep together comfortably on a big bed. I have to say that we did sleep well despite the fact. We both felt rested in the mornings.
I admit I was influenced heavily by reviews of the inn, as you can tell I am a fan of yelp. I do know to also research numerous review sites before deciding on the validity of the overall reviews collectively. There were some negative reviews that I overlooked because they were outnumbered substantially by positive ones, mainly pertaining to upkeep, especially concerning outdated rooms a factors associated with older establishments near water, pools, beaches as you can imagine the climate is usually wet and guests are normally coming from a pool or beach and soak the carpets, bedding etc. To be expected. However our room had peeling wall paper at every seam on every wall. This really bothered me because it was just so obvious and I could not believe it had not been addressed despite it looking so awful. It can be easily and very inexpensively removed and a fresh coat of paint applied in a day. Combined with very old carpet and its clear why some guests complained of musty odors. Both can retain mold and mildew and need to be replaced or removed. The bedding also was not what one would expect in an establishment run by such a positively reviewed innkeeper. I guess I just expected that they would make bedding a priority since it's essentially the most important factor in a bedroom, for rent at that. The comforters were visibly old, and we actually removed them from the bed altogether when we slept and put them back on when we made our bed in the a.m. The sheets were a little better but still not of good quality, nor were the pillows. The bathroom was a very nice size and was clean as were the towels.
In the morning there were always delicious freshly baked muffins and some cake breads baked by the owner every single evening. The aromas of the baking filled our room every night. It was actually very nice to come home to in the evening. I loved the location and how convenient and central it was to all the things on our list of to-dos. I wanted to give this place 5 stars if I had to base the review solely on the hospitality and location. However I hope an honest review only serves to aid the inn in striving to maintain its already popular reputation and focusing it's efforts on areas that need slight attention that would make this little gem a true jewel. I would love to see the improvements so we can stay again next year if they'll have us! read more
