Just moved into a new house and needed five deadbolts and four entry knobs re-keyed. I found A Better Cheaper Locksmith on here and had them swing by the house on a Wednesday evening after work. The day of I was running a bit late to meet with them at the house so I called them to inform them that my fiances parents would be there instead. Brian informed me that they were actually running late too, and that Bob was supposed to call me. I hadn't received any calls from any unknown numbers, BUT I was way down Jefferson in West Sacramento for an hour so it might have been bad reception. It worked out perfect that I was running late and he said they would arrive around 7pm. (I actually ended up getting back home a minute after 6pm which was my appointment time). 7pm rolls around and it's Brian that greets me, very friendly and professional. I showed him all the locks and asked him about one particular knob that was kind of loose. He mentioned it happens with age, but is still functional/lockable. He suggested to replace it with another knob at another time that can be rekeyed with the new key that he would be making for the rest of the doors. I agreed to go that route, but didn't clarify to skip rekeying the one knob because I would end up replacing it in the near future anyways. After our conversation Brian gets to work and I let him do his thing. Sometime later Bob shows up and tackles the other doors and they end up finishing within about 30 minutes. He handed me the original keys and the four new ones to test out, but I just tested the original to make sure it didn't work anymore and one of the new ones. I didn't want to test all four keys on all nine locks, so I just asked him if they would come back if there were any problems with the keys and Brian said they would. The price was reasonable considering they made a service call and did the re-keying in a short period. Only docked a star because even if I was in a dead area when they tried to call me, there was no voicemail left and I wouldn't have known if I was sitting in my home waiting. Also, I did ask about the loose knob when I was shown the bill (total of nine locks), but they did end up re-keying it even though I assumed our conversation earlier implied that he wouldn't and it would only be a bill for eight locks. I didn't argue about it because ultimately it was my fault for not clarifying as a customer. Aside from the tardiness, the service was great and I would definitely work with them again. read more

This business had a great rating so I scheduled an appointment with them and they did not show up. I called Bob's number and my call was forwarded and no voicemail. I called again now the phone didn't ring it went directly to voicemail. I left a message and less than 5 minutes later I recieved a phone call from a different number from someone other than Bob... I was confused how he even got the message but I still told him my situation and he said, "alright let me check with Bob." I did not recieve a phone call back. I tried to call back and once again no voicemail available to leave a message, even though earlier it was available. Really odd. I can understand people running late or even accidently double booking themselves but straight up not calling is unprofessional. I looked at more reviews after this and seen that they were no shows with other people as well, I'm surprised they have such a high rating. I ended up taking my business elsewhere. I called Bob based on the great reviews on Yelp and he didn't disappoint. I explained that we had a deadbolt that jammed when you inserted the key and he advised me of his fee to come out and take a look at it (which was very reasonable may I add). After telling him of the brand and model, he explained that he's seen lots of similar issues with particular model and since it was fairly new, that I could take it back to my local "home center" for a replacement. Contacted Bob again b/c a tenant recently had their house burglarized so we didn't want to take any chances. Although they were busy he understood our concerns and fit us into their schedule and sent his guy out at 9pm at night to make it happen the same day. I read all the reviews (85) including the bad ones, but they answered my call and were able to come out for on a schedule that worked for me. Brian came out to fix the lock on a security screen door that had stopped opening (unless I disassembled it from the inside), diagnosed the problem (lock was BROKEN), said I could buy one from him or he could wait while I went to Hollywood Hardware for a new one (less $$$) and he would install it. I took him up on his offer and now my new works great. He was on time (early actually), respectful, knowledgeable, and friendly. I had a problem with a VERY old lock (I have a very old house) and he took pics of it and said that his partner Bob would help with this since he was more familiar with locks made before 1950. We scheduled for Bob and he came out a few days later (my schedule) and he fixed the problem with the old lock. It all took less time and cost me less than either their estimates or my expectations. I decided to call Bob at A Better Cheaper Locksmith based on his yelp reviews and I'm glad I did because the reviews were true and Bob did not disappoint. I had a front door that suddenly would not open despite the knob functioning correctly. I had spoken with Bob on the phone and had me text pictures of my door knobs to see what he'll be dealing with. In the end, he determined it would be better to come out and see for himself so Bob came out to assess the problem the next day, free of charge. Bob wanted to make sure he can even fix the problem before charging me, which is rare because all the other companies I previously called for a quote were charging me just to come out. Bob came in the time frame we had scheduled, was prepared, and very professional. He was able to figure out what the problem was (a broken latch) and knew the solution. After buying new parts for my lock, Bob was able to install everything in about 10 minutes. While I had him at my home, I also asked if he could take a look at another lock that had given me a problem in the past. Bob agreed without hesitation and was able to fix the additional door lock! He was knowledgeable about his work and just kept it real. He was easy going and very approachable. He was easy to talk to and we even had a good conversation about the Philippines.
