In regards to taste - My husband and I had gone to a few cake tastings for our wedding prior to finding Kristin and her team, but as soon as we tasted her assortment of flavors, our decision was immediately made! They use real fruit, which makes a huge difference. As far as presentation? My husband is a big Star Wars fan, so we ended up getting a laser cut cake topper from Etsy. In all honesty, the cake topper was not very pretty, and looked a little dorky, but I left it up to Kristin and her team to see what they could do with it. I'm sad that my cake didn't taste as a $200 cake would of. But then I thought maybe all of that $$ went into the design of the cake. My first impression was how wonderful and it really was nice of them to give us the left over chocolate covered strawberries that they didn't use for my birthday cake..... When I opened the covering to my cake I was in aww of the size and that it had a crown. But then I started to pay attention to everything else and felt a little short changed. No doubt it was a beautiful cake, but parts of the cake was pulling apart from the center of the cake. This is something you'd expect a couple of days after keeping the cake refrigerated. But this was just after it was picked up. Still I'm very happy that the better half went the half mile to do something so nice for me. We sliced the cake and wanted to enjoy the cake and strawberries beyond the fondue and sugar walls but was disappointed that it was just eh' okay. I've had really really amazing cakes before so I truly felt that the cake could have been more moist and not so dry. My heart felt as if I was going through a break up since I've been seeing so many amazing looking cakes of this place on social media that my cake didn't matter and this was a one night stand. I was referred to a cake life through a friend and had a special cake in mind for my step father's birthday. I brought my family in for a cake tasting that led us to a cup cake tower cake. We picked several flavors and discussed design. Kristen quoted me nearly 690.00 for a cup cake tower cake of 96 cupcakes and a bowl of noodles and two peaches on the tower. I thought it was pricy but it was a special day and i knew she could do it. The fee didn't include the 35 dollars for 5 mini slices of cake for tasting. But just the cake tower and cupcakes plus delivery. Communication was wonderful open and responsive. Until i emailed her later to let her know i would prefer to let her know through email and not a review that the cupcakes were really dry. Not one response, so disappointed! Currently in the middle of Hurricane Lane, we contacted the company owner Kristin informing her that due to life threatening weather the wedding was called off. We asked to possibly working something out, she became immediately upset informed us that she will still charge us regardless of weather. Understandably we agreed however we asked that she follow the contract and drop it off on Saturday at the venue to our wedding coordinator. She refused and stated she can drop it off on Sunday. We asked since she couldn't fulfill her end of the agreement if she was willing to work with us on a compromise. Kristin refused and was very upset that we even asked. I didn't end up working with Kristin, but I can assure you, she still deserves a 5 star review. While looking for a wedding cake baker, I sent out a few different requests (because who doesn't want to do as many cake tastings as they can?) and one of them was Kristin. Of the 5 requests I sent out, only 2 set up tastings with me, and she did so in a prompt manner. I came in on a Sunday afternoon at our pre-determined appointment, and Kristin was kind and accommodating. She adjusted one of my flavors for the tasting to my preference as there were 2 particular flavors of cake I knew I wanted for my wedding cake ahead of time. The reason I didn't end up working with her? These two flavors didn't quite cut it for me. That being said, all of her best-selling flavors that we tried alongside them were /impeccable/. I would highly recommend A Cake Life for anybody looking for a wedding cake who is happy to get pre-determined flavors (such as the delicious strawberries and cream, and the out-of-this-world chocolate peanut butter). Really, a credit to her is how bearable she makes chocolate cake - it's not overwhelming or decadent, but rather light and palatable, something you want to eat an entire piece of, and the peanut butter filling was to die for. Although it took about two weeks for Kristin to get back to me (I understand they are busy), we were able to finalize everything without any problems via e-mail. I sent her pictures and explained the details of the cake thoroughly. Picking up the cake was easy, and packaged well for transport. The R2D2 cake was beautiful! The details in the cake topper to the cake and the base, the vibrant colors, and buttons. All were very elegantly made. As for the taste of the cake, it was good. The cream was sweet for my liking but the crowd were pleased. The sponge was moist in some parts and sort of dry in few areas. We had the Devil's Food with Cookies and Cream filling. My mom absolutely loved the looks of the cake. That's all that really mattered ultimately at the end. I've never spent $300+ on a 6" round cake before, but it seemed worth it considering how beautiful the cakes were online, and the many perfect reviews... I really am not sure if I got a deal or if cakes of this caliber normally cost this much. Someone on this thread mentioned that there was a "LOCAL PRICE" but I guess I would never know if I received that... Would've been nice if there was such a thing. Only thing that made me :( was the R2D2 cake topper's right bottom wheel fell off a couple hours after receiving the cake while sitting on the table without any movement. I'm thinking the sweet adhesive wasn't on sufficiently. For $100 for this piece alone, it was quite saddening. My wedding cake was completely disappointing. The chocolate layer was not chocolatey at all and tasted washed out. The buttercream was overly sweet, too much shortening, waxy consistency. Imbalanced ratio of cake to frosting (was completely off, too much icing not enough cake). Many of my guests were disappointed and commented how the cake was too sweet, waxy and too much frosting. I'm so disappointed! While the look of the cakes are beautiful, it's the taste of the cakes that are lacking. I ordered a birthday cake for my children and was worried it wasn't going to be enough so I ordered an extra cake that was featured on their flash sale on Friday. The birthday cake ($100 for a 6 inch) was decorated with simple rosettes and the flavor I chose was chocolate and the flash sale cake ($45) was a cookies and cream cake. We tried the cookies and cream first and it was really dry and overly sweet so we had high hopes that the other cake would be better but unfortunately both were big disappointments and I ended throwing most of it away. While the presentation was great the cakes themselves were overly sweet (think powdered sugar straight from the box) and really dry. The birthday kids had a couple of bites and just couldn't bring themselves to finish it (mind you, they love sweets), my older children commented that they weren't impressed especially from a company that has won many awards. It seems they concentrate more on the presentation of their cakes rather than the taste which is sad because once cut up the look doesn't matter anymore. Sadly, we won't be back. The red velvet were very dry, there was absolutely no consistency in sizes between all of the cupcakes. Website says they're big cupcakes and they're not, they're on the smaller size. I contacted Kristin pretty late in the game, about 6 weeks before the big day. She was accommodating to my budget and my time frame. I ordered two cakes, our wedding cake and a surprise groom's cake. I wanted a simple two tier wedding cake decorated with fresh flowers that would showcase our custom cake toppers. On the other hand, the groom's cake was a larger and more complex task. My husband loves to fish, particularly large mouth bass. I wanted Kristin to create the most realistic cake possible. I provided pictures and she ran with it. The end result was amazing! I am a huge fan of strawberry filling and white cake, and my tier cake was perfection. I also do not eat a lot of frosting, but the buttercream was not too sweet. It was more than my budget, but well worth the additional expenses. My wedding was a destination wedding, and Kristin had wonderful advice about delivery times. They suggested that they deliver later in the day to keep the cake fresh. My coordinator even said that usually bakeries will not deliver late in the day, and that this was a great service Kristin was offering. I cannot say enough good things about A Cake Life. Kristin outdid herself with a request for a particular cake design, colouring and flavour for the celebration of our friend's 60th Birthday in Honolulu. The cake was just perfect, delicious and was just as ordered and the celebration was all that more special because of it. The online request was easy to follow as I made the order from Australia, and Kristin corresponded via email with explains to questions I had. Payment also was easy online. Delivery of cake to the Hotel was on time and I was assisted in carrying it to it's destination for storage. I also ordered online Thanks Giving treats as well whilst in Honolulu to celebrate with friends and they too were scrumptious. I found A Cake Life on Yelp when planning our small wedding. We decided to go with a two tier buttercream cake with Red Velvet/cream cheese for one layer and vanilla cake Lilikoi filling for the second. The staff at A Cake life were easy to work with and we were able to arrange everything via email. On the day of pick up, the cake was ready to go and looked exactly how I imagined. I just had my wedding on 4/9/15 and as I soon as I saw my cake, I was ecstatic! It was so beautiful matching our wedding colors. And the cake itself was amazing! First tier was yellow butter and lilikoi, second tier red velvet w/cream cheese, and my favorite coconut pineapple! Every single guest loved the cake! Their customer service was great.. I do not give 5 stars that easily, but not only am I still in awe over the amazing cake, but I want to order a cake a week just to get my fix! Kristin and I communicated purely by email, I was unable to visit her shop for a tasting and went solely based off her Yelp reviews. You did not lead me astray Yelpers. We got a 2-tier cake, top tier was lemon with lilikoi and bottom tier was guava with fresh strawberry filling. When her and her helper arrived on Saturday morning, they were cheerful and professional. I saw the cake and almost cried because it was so perfect. I let her do her own creative thing and she really exceeded what I imagined. After they carried the cake to the party room, they asked if I needed help unloading my car. Let me repeat that, they wanted to help me unload my car! I did not accept the help, but was grateful that they were willing to help. She didn't leave until she made sure I really didn't need help. That to me, goes above and beyond. Now, the good part... We hid the cake in the fridge until it was time to sing. The "AAAHHH's" and "WOW's" filled the room. I think anyone with a cell phone in reach was snapping photos. Then the cake was cut, and everyone began to get their plates of cake. The room was awfully quiet. I was wondering if it was all show, and maybe the cake was just okay... NOPE! They were quiet because they were inhaling the cake! There were about 30 people and all of them said it was the best cake they've ever had (and we have a lot of parties and cake) and they all wanted to know where it was from.
