A La Mode is a little piece of heaven for those with nut allergies (and egg allergies!) Going into an ice cream shoppe and being able to eat ANYTHING I want is typically unheard of, except at A La Mode! I had seen this shop on Facebook & Instagram, and being from CT (where there are not any local nut-free ice cream shoppes), I had to put it on my bucket list for my next NYC visit! My husband and I had tickets to the ballet last Saturday, and although 55th was quite the treck in the opposite direction, we left early to make the stop. Totally worth it! The woman behind the counter was very friendly, and let us test out some flavors before making a final decision: I went with pink sprinkles (actually vanilla, but cuter!) and it was delicious. My favorite part - I could have it in a cone and not worry about cross-contamination. My husband went with the lemon sorbet! Excited for some dessert, we saw A La Mode Shoppe's high ratings and walked straight over! A La Mode has about 5 tables, each seated with 3-4 chairs, but also a little party room for kids who want to have a party at A La Mode! In addition, there were even cute products ranging from T shirts to stuffed toys. Definitely a cutesy shop! We were able to sample various flavors such as rose, peach tequila, and "partly cloudy", which is cotton candy ice cream. My fiancé and I ended up splitting 1 scoop of partly cloudy as well as the "pink sprinkles", which is pink vanilla ice cream and sprinkles. Only cost us about $4.30! As we started eating the ice cream, we noticed our spoons turning different colors! A neat little trick, this type of effort really shows that A La Mode goes out of their way to please the customer in any way possible! The pink sprinkles ice cream scoop tasted just like vanilla, but I liked being able to actually taste the sprinkles! Sometimes with sprinkles, it can be hard to actually taste/feel the texture of sprinkles, so sometimes it seems almost pointless to have them in the ice cream. However, being able to taste/feel the sprinkles' texture was great! Meanwhile, the party cloudy ice cream tasted like dainty cotton candy! Later on, I realized there were marshmallows packed in the partly cloudy ice cream! They were actually 1.5 times the size of regular marshmallows in the average ice cream scoop, so this was a surprise! My fiancé especially loved the marshmallows! Two heaping scoops later and we are suffering from the itis. Overall, what a wonderfully fun ice cream shop! I especially love how A La Mode caters to people who have nut allergies. Despite blatant demographic targeting of families* -- specifically families/mothers & their children -- I quite liked A La Mode, even if there was no pie available. Got myself familiarized with their pricing for the ice cream (the space seems decorated/geared towards events & clothing more than eating in, but there's enough room to sit if it isn't busy). Cones are small and smaller (The doughnuts and sandwiches listed on the board are in the slender freezer to your left when you enter, and just as small.), so go with a cup (which I received being asked, for the best), particularly the tween size rather than the kid size*, which is pretty generous at a very reasonable $3.81. Their pumpkin and coffee toffee flavors not only didn't leave me wishing for the traditional ice cream ingredients (the rosewater and chocolate were also solid), they also seemed very similar to your usual suspect. It's on a quiet stretch, so it's a particularly great option in an area without many. An extra star for that, and just because I hope they survive. BTW there's way too much info on their receipts, so ask them to toss yours. *Gentlemen, keep your eyes on theirs. read more

A La Mode is AMAZING. We stop here every time we are in NYC--even if we are waaaay across town--because it is 100% worth the trip every single time. Was here over the weekend. My cousin had a 1 year old birthday party. They accommodated a group of maybe 50-60 people quite well ranging from babies/toddlers to the elderly. There were toys and related to keep them busy and the music wasn't super loud either. Staff here was very nice. They took jackets and went beyond what you would usually expect for a place like this. Outside of the snacks and pizza, they had an ice cream cake and they had scoops. I personally had the rosewater. Excellent flavors. Had some little pieces of raspberry in there as well. I otherwise tried their blue sky (cotton candy with marshmallows, cute idea) from someone else which I liked despite not generally liking cotton candy ice cream. Chocolate/vanilla were good, not amazing. In terms of the rosewater, I'd give it a 4.3 if I was here alone and probably give it either a 4 or a 5 for the good service also. Stopped in today for the first time. Definitely, the staff are super nice and helpful. Only reason I gave 3 stars is because overall I was not that impressed by the taste of the ice cream. I was visiting NYC earlier this week (3/19/18). My son has a peanut allergy and we were stoked to find out that there was an ice cream shoppe that sold ice cream that was safe for people with peanut allergies. We were walking there from our hotel in Times Square and when we were less than 10 minutes away we check to see their hours and discovered they were closed. A friend that was with us called and the owner was there. We explained that we were close and she said that we should come by and she would serve us. The owner was delightful. She let us try many flavors before we ordered. All of the flavors we tried were wonderful. My son had vanilla ice cream, I had a combination of coffee flavored ice cream and ice cream with chocolate and pretzels. Both were awesome!!! As a bonus, we found out that A La Mode sells their ice cream to a few local stores in the Chicago area. I can't wait to buy some. read more

This ice cream spot is not only tasty but absolutely beautiful. The workers there are super friendly. I let them know it was my first time coming to the ice cream shop and they let me try out each flavor. They have honestly the best tasting flavors in that area so far. They are very cautious about allergies so they're nut free. They have parties there. They cater, and I found out that they do movie nights for children on specific days out the week with ice cream for only about $10, which is great. I'm absolutely in love with this shop for birthday parties. They get an A plus from a very happy Mom of a 3 year old. Noah and Sandy are super helpful. Seriously go out of their way- they came to our apartment to pick up favors, and offered to help with a cake emergency. They gave me sanity and the best advice- LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The man behind the counter was patient, polite, friendly and a Good Samaritan. Some customer had left their credit card and he didn't know the customer's address so he contacted the credit card company asking that they inform the patron where the card was. Sandy, the owner, is a dream to work with and just a genuinely nice person! We hosted my daughter's 5th birthday party here yesterday and it went off without a hitch. The space was beautifully decorated with balloons and a personalized sign and crafts were set up for all the kids. As part of the package, Sandy provides a lovely gift bag for each child. Best of all, she was extremely accommodating to a party guest with celiac's disease and a dairy allergy- there were several sorbet and topping options for that child. Not to mention the Vermont Nut Free products used within the shoppe's ice creams and also available for purchase. Some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted served by two of the friendliest owners. My friend is nut and egg-free and this was her first time in an ice cream shop where she could actually be served. They let us try every flavor, took pictures for us to document her time, and were so helpful and understanding about her allergies. The owner even gave us three of they're mini (nut-free) chocolate covered ice cream donuts to try. So happy to see a gorgeous little shop like this in Nee York. Pretty good. This is a great little addition to the non-existent, family friendly, options in the midtown east area. Ice cream and sorbets: they offer about 10-12 flavors. Per the website, all flavors are home made. The ice creams are egg and are nut free, and they also offer dairy and gluten free options as well. I think the flavors are pretty good. They are nothing compared to other fancy NYC ice cream shops, but much better than anything store bought. Definitely worth going to if you have certain diet restrictions, are in the neighborhood, and/or looking for a spacious kid friendly ice cream shop. But I wouldn't go out of my way for this based on the ice cream flavors alone. Though some of the flavors have a unique edge to them, I thought they weren't as creamy and they were mild in flavor. -$1.50 for the mini size cone: super cute. It's literally a tiny melon sized scoop of ice cream, on top of a mini cone. Super cute, and great portion for a toddler. -$2.50 for a kid sized cone: one scoop. They offer other sizes, but those are the two sizes we normally get. If you have to deal with a stroller and/or wheelchair, you will need to climb up a couple steps to get inside. Just something to consider as this ice cream shop is geared towards kids and families. But once inside, you will have no issue at all as there are plenty of tables and open space. They even have a room to the right with kid sized tables and chairs, and some fun Melissa and Doug toys to play with. It's a cute set up. Per the website, they can accommodate private parties. For the most part, we found the service to be friendly and decent every time we've been in. However, one thing I found slightly annoying in regards to service on my last visit, was how they kept offering my friend (who is a regular) to try out the new flavors, but never offered any to me. I stood right next to her, and not once did they offer me a sample. I'm sure they would have given it to me had I asked, but it was just a little rude to offer her about 4-5 samples (while taking the time to tell her about the ingredients and flavors), yet didn't once turn to me to ask if I wanted a sample. Not the biggest of deals, since I still made a purchase and enjoyed the ice cream and will most likely go back, but just something they need to be more considerate and mindful of. Very cute spot! The ice cream is creamy and tasty without being too sweet. This place reminds me of Alice's Tea Cup but an ice cream shop. I got the strawberry and my boyfriend got the chocolate. Really wanted to like this place, we dig places that cater to the food allergy population. We called ahead, confirmed that there were no parties already scheduled and that they could accommodate egg, dairy, and nut allergies with a gentleman. Website also confirmed they could accommodate those allergies. We made a special trip here for my preschooler who has never eaten in an ice cream parlor, and of course we talked it up (lesson learned). We're from out of state. I'm guessing, hoping, this was a freak incident. We arrived and were informed a private party was going on. The man in charge told us to come backin 45 minutes. It was dark out and we have two young children. After telling him we couldn't, it was too late, he offered to grab some ice cream from the back, which was nice (why I gave 2 stars, not 1). I realized I hadn't specified our allergies. When he came out he confirmed that their ice cream had dairy and was told they do not offer dairy free ice cream at all. He kept asking whom we spoke with over the phone and blamed both bad pieces of information on an employee. I'm guessing he was a manager since the picture online of the owner doesn't look like him (glasses, full head of hair). We left empty handed. I confirmed today the website says they offer dairy,egg, and nut free options. My kid was disappointed, as was I. I left in tears. It seems silly, but if you have any life threatening food restrictions you know how much you want to give your kids a taste of the care free treats their friends experience. We wasted 1.5 hours of our vacation on traveling to and experiencing this disappointment. There is some kind of disconnect in between what they really offer and do not... maybe a miscommunication matter between employees and owner? Either way, I truly hope they can troubleshoot this issue so other potential customers don't have the experience we did. We would like to see such a business flourish. read more

It's nice that the ice cream flavors are nut-free for all those without allergies. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The partly cloudy ice cream here (cotton candy with marshmallows) is one of my fav flavors ever! The staff couldn't be nicer and they have takeaway pints and ice cream bars available. Reasonably priced as well. Unfortunately for me (a grouch who prefers dogs to kids) this is a children's-focused parlor. Lots of cute clothes/toys for sale and there is a back room for kids parties. If you are here in the afternoon, chances are high that there will be 20 unruly screaming kids running around. My go-to is late night ice cream before store close to avoid the kiddy crowds.
