Overall, we don't consider the job done except for painting and he was (generously) over schedule/late by 2 full months and over budget by 30%. Evan did a spectacular painting job, for which we are grateful, however his client/project management and expectation setting were abysmal. overall, that's cast a pall on his amazing painting and our relationship. We gave Evan the benefit of the doubt, but we need to move on since further delays, and lack of communication are sullying an otherwise beautiful outcome.

Until 2012, I lived in San Francisco and met Evan Auchard of Fine Custom Painting sometime around…read more2004. At that time, we hired him to paint our 1888 Victorian in Noe Valley, which was in desperate shape. It took ages, but alligatored and chipped paint gave way to bare wood and then a brand new skin. We worked together closing on the color scheme and to this day the house looks as good as it did when the scaffolding was removed. I understand the current owners occasionally have Evan's crew wash it, thereby revealing the high gloss finish. So pleased with the results, we had him paint our subsequent house in The Castro. Though not a Victorian, he did as well with the stucco as he did with 100-year-old plus redwood. Furthermore, he painted all of the interior. I would trust him to use good judgment on any house I wanted him to paint. Know this, however: Evan paints for the long run. He invests the time and energy into getting it right so the job will last for many years to come. I've recommended him to friends and clients, as well as served as a reference.

Some of the top painters in the area are not! Ask your painter for their license number! We hired Redhill to paint 7 rooms in our house (living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, entryway, hallway). They did the work in 5 days. On the last day, we decided that we had to add on the kitchen because everything else looked so good that it made the kitchen look bad. They were able to get some their team to work on Saturday at the last minute to fit in the extra room. Philip even recommended a color for the kitchen that would go well with the other colors we had chosen for the other rooms. I am *very* detail oriented, and if I see rough edges or mistakes, it drives me absolutely bonkers. But like I said, these guys were perfect. I'm not saying there weren't minor things to fix, but they fixed them and the final product is as good as it could be. We also had them demo a built-in that was not original to the house (and was not great in general). They did the demo then patched up the wall. Now it looks like it was never there! They were able to add this work on and we paid a reasonable price for time and materials to get the work done. Speaking of price, they gave us an estimate that was thoroughly prepared and broken out by trim, walls, and ceilings. They did the work specified, they added the change order for the extra room, charged for the demo work, and that was it. On time and on cost and perfect work. I couldn't ask for more! Oh, and they prepped and covered *everything* and kept a small footprint while working throughout the house. I was concerned about our 104-year-old hardwoods and they showed them great care and respect. Speaking of care and respect, they came on time, left on time, were always friendly, and cleaned up after themselves every single day. You should hire Redhill Painting. You'll find cheaper painters, and if you are just painting a rental unit and don't care if they slop paint around, go for the cheapest. We had a weird and awful job painting our old Victorian public areas. Twelve foot high ceilings,…read moreornate plaster and millwork covered in layers of hideously bad drippy peeling paint jobs. A couple of other painters came by, looked at the job, and said that unless we gave them megabucks to scrape and strip and patch for weeks, they wouldn't even guarantee the paint would stay on. Plus, several of them were "Little lady, you don't know anything so we are going to do it our way--ie use cheap, stinky paint b/c that is the only way to go." We are so glad we called Jason based on his Yelp reviews. He came by promptly and immediately spotted a potential problem where the old lathe was staining the plaster in sections of the ceiling that the other painters hadn't noticed. We told him we were on a budget and didn't expect perfection--we just needed habitability. He gave us a very reasonable price within our budget for painting the huge hallway and our front and back parlors and clearly described exactly what he planned to do for that price. It wasn't the cheapest price or the most expensive, but we went with him b/c he was thoughtful and flexible. (He didn't give us any trouble about using Benjamin Moore or Farrow and Ball paint, even though the FB paint in particular is tricky to work with.) We fully expected an average or below average job given our budget price and the poor starting condition of our place (I'm not kidding--it was really bad) but Jason and his crew shocked us with the quality of their work. The house is beautiful now. We were so impressed that we had them paint every other room in the house. And then our kitchen cabinets. And when we have the money, the back of the house....and anything else that ever needs paint. Also, Jason is a really nice guy who is patient and flexible to work with. (He's awfully busy but he takes the time to answer all your stupid questions!) His crew, led by Timeo and Raoul, are also quiet and polite. It is a good sign that they have been with Jason for a long time and like their boss.

He always arrived on time first thing in the morning, the projects were completed when he estimated they would be done, and the work is well done and beautiful. His crew painted my living room (with very high ceilings) dining room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom and did a great job. Sal is very knowledgeable and takes pride in his work. After the interior painting was completed, I asked for his opinion on my fading garage door. He bought my wood garage door back to life and I'm very happy with the results.
