If you wanted a discount on your "Uber inspection", there were dozens of other places you could've brought your car to that would have been a lot less. The price that you were charged was the price that he charges. And it's a reasonable price, because out by where I live there are about three shops that charge about $80 for the same kind of inspection. I am familiar with like kind of inspection that this is and it's not just a visual inspection, they have to test things. And it's in the Uber contract and it's in the Lyft contract, if you don't get these things checked out then you don't get your Lyft license- these things need to have diagnostics run on them, and that is why they charge you for it. Because the diagnostic machines at a shop use resources and cost money to use. It also uses up time. So $69 was actually a reasonable price for this kind of inspection. But I do personally know about five con artists down the street from Edski who would have done a visual inspection and then charged you $50 for it, but you just have to remember if Lyft catches you handing in an incomplete or falsified report then you are toast. I have known Edski since what, was it, 2003? And he has always been a consummate professional, extremely meticulous shop owner who gets things done the right way and he knows how to do it unlike a lot of auto shops in this town. And because he is a perfectionist sometimes he gives the appearance of being abrasive, but that's not the case at all- it's that there are wheels spinning in his head where he is trying to figure out the best way to get a job done. And to get as many jobs done for as many people as he possibly can all at the same time. However since his specialty is restoration of old cars, and I have seen him resurrect some cars that you would never think could be driven ever again, if you are bringing your brand new Infiniti to him, sure he can fix that for you but that's literally a waste of his time and your money. But he can and does do the occasional contemporary car repair, he can do it. He also repairs large motor homes. in fact I have seen a large array of vehicles paraded into and out of his shop on Garnet off of Morena Boulevard near Pacific Beach. His location is actually one of the best locations I've seen: his shop stands alone, he's got freeways and train tracks on either side of him and a well protected property. He has done some work for me, he always finds exactly what's wrong. But mainly, if you have a classic vehicle that you just can't do the restoration on yourself, and you need help or you just want somebody good that will do it all, either way this is the best place for vehicle restoration I have ever seen, and I have seen thousands of shops between here and Santa Barbara, I have done work for thousands of shop owners from here to Santa Barbara, and A New Way Auto is where I would bring any classic vehicle that I wanted to put back into perfect condition. Its not the same service when you call and try to inquire about information about a problem with your vehicle. You should definitely go here for an alignment if you want to pay for it but not have the work done! You'd think a shop would do the service you pay for but that is not the case when you come here....for the alignment anyways. They couldn't get the bolt off to do the job so they forced it off and broke it and was not able to complete the service but somehow I'm still responsible. I would never recommend this place for electrical work. It was five days of hell. Every day they said it was fixed, it would break down and back to the shop. Was told they ordered original replacement parts. When I took it to another place, I found out the 2nd alternator was a knockoff or e refurbished. I was told they would reimburse me for this fiasco. I have had a history of good experiences here. I drive an old Toyota, and Ed and the other guys at A New Way have seen it through one major repair (two failed cylinders) and a failed smog check, and I trust them completely. Not just because I'm a pollyanna, but because my interaction with them over time has proven it. I started coming here in the first place because two other friends recommended them. They haven't tried to sell me on repairs that weren't warranted, and everything is explained and demonstrated. (You should see the photos they took of my crankshaft! Uh--sorry, if that sounded like innuendo.) And much as I liked my previous mechanic, he was first generation Filipino and I couldn't understand him very well. So I've been more comfortable here. I was debating on giving two stars because it is difficult to find someone to work on older vehicles, but these guys will. Unfortunately, I never would have brought my truck in if I could go back in time. That said, if you have something basic that needs to be done, I'm sure you will probably be happy with the service. I have a 1969 Chevy K-10 that had the original transfer case swapped out; when this happened, it seemed like they pulled everything around, and my distributor cap was right against the firewall. It was clear that the engine needed to move forward a bit because this was causing problems with the clutch linkage, headers, etc. Additionally, when the motor mounts needed to be changed about 20 years ago, we couldn't get them bolted back together without slotting out the motor mount brackets. The brackets wanted the motor to sit about a half-inch forward from where it was. After all this time, I wanted to add new springs and other improvements to my truck, but I wanted to get the motor back to the correct position before doing this. So I called "A New Way", and was assured that they could do the work and that the motor would be sitting right where it was supposed to be when they were finished. While they were at it, I also had them install new springs and do some other work that needed to be done. I was optimistic because Jeff told me that he had rebuilt several of the same types of trucks and knew it like the back of his hand. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything done to correct the problem of where the engine sits. The repair that was performed was to weld up the slotted brackets and use a hydraulic ram to push them to the motor so the bolts could be threaded. It is hard to tell, but it honestly looks like the engine might even be closer to the firewall now. The spark plug wires barely have room to attach to the distributor cap. The biggest problem with the repairs is that I made a mistake and paid for parts and services that were not completed when I first picked up my truck. The work wasn't finished due to parts being back-ordered, which I understood given the current state of the supply chain. My clutch linkage was wearing out, and I wanted to get that fixed. Jeff explained swapping out the metal on metal pieces with Heim joints, that he had done it before, and that this would be a vast improvement. Several months had passed between when I first brought my truck in, and I wound up moving away from San Diego. I finally called to find out about the parts, and they had come in, so I drove about 500 miles back to have them installed, which I was assured would only take an afternoon. I had done this work myself before and knew it shouldn't take much longer. Since I no longer lived in San Diego, I had to stay at a friend's house while the work was completed. After dropping my truck off on a Wednesday morning, I did not get it back until the following Monday. This was a considerable inconvenience because I was stuck down there for much longer than expected without a vehicle. The reason was that they ordered parts that did not fit my truck. Had I known what parts they were actually planning to install, I never would have agreed to this because it is obvious they would not work. My clutch linkage has a bend in it, and the parts they ordered were perfectly straight. There was a picture of the parts in the catalog, so there is no excuse for this, especially when I was told they knew my truck so well. After the frustration of several days without my truck, I finally got it back on Monday afternoon and was pretty furious as soon as I pushed down the clutch pedal. The pedal barely disengaged the clutch and felt horrible. This is due to the motor not being in the right place, which caused the z-bar and header not to have enough clearance between each other. You can clearly see the steep angle the z-bar takes between the frame and engine block. After 13 thousand dollars of work and another $600 in gas to drive back down, my truck is barely drivable, and the clutch linkage has already fallen apart on me and left me in an awkward position in the middle of the road. Thankfully, I was able to get it back together without too much fuss, but I will now have to buy another car (my truck is my only vehicle besides a motorcycle) and redo the repairs that I paid for and expected "A New Way" to perform correctly. read more

My Car had to have the entire AC System replaced. Everything, not just the condenser which would be typical in most cases. Ed, the owner and his team led by Jeff fixed the problem, fixed it quickly and now I have nice cool air in my Black Honda CRV to stay cool for the summer. I called around to find a shop that could do the work for less than the ransom the dealership was going to charge (very expensive) they gave me a great price. They not only fixed it, they fixed it fast - half the time the dealer said they needed. When I went to pick up the car, Jeff took the time to explain what was done and showed me the broken parts. The estimates are always accurate, the work is professional and my truck is done on time or (usually) before. The prices are good, too. I found out the hard way--got a coupon from the Ford dealer around the corner so I took my Ranger to them for a big servicing. Cost a fortune and most of what they did turned out to be "inspected". Ed actually finds stuff and fixes it. Everybody there is pleasant and easy to deal with. They speak Normal Person language and translate from mechanic-ese so you can understand what's going on. I was always set back at how high the bills where at the end of the services. People are always asking, "Do you know a GOOD mechanic?" It's nice to know that there is one. In the middle of finals season at SDSU, my car blew a head gasket. I searched around and made a dozen phone calls. I was worried because I know that many auto repair places will "find" things wrong with your car and your bill will triple before you can drive again. Once I spoke to Ed and the guys at the shop, I felt that they were up front and honest about their work. I brought my car in and was immediately glad I did. They explained exactly what they planned to do and how they would find the problem. Instead of pulling apart my truck to find the problem, they hooked it up to several testing devices, saving me a lot of money in labor. When a legitimate problem was found, they called me up to come over and examine the issue. They take digital pictures of everything they do, and document every part of the repair. This is great because when I sell my car, I have documentation related to the repair. They encourage customers to be there every step of the way while they fix your car. I NEVER feel good about having my truck at a shop, but I feel like these guys stand behind superior service and honesty to keep customers loyal. I have already recommended A New Way Auto to my friends. Good job guys! They also gave me a car to drive to school so I wouldn't miss my finals. Finding a trustworthy mechanic is incredibly tough since I was spoiled with having my dad as a mechanic. I finally found one. As a Christian based store, I had certain expectations and they lived up to it. The shop is very clean and organized and friendly staff. I brought my acura mdx in and they were very knowledgeable about the issues they have and were able to diagnose it. They were very upfront with me about the condition of my tranny and could've easily just sold me a new one but they were honest and gave me some options that didn't cost 4000.00. The part I loved was all the before and after photos they showed me of the work they did so I could see the condition of my tranny. The only thing stopping from me giving 5 stars was that I had to wait a week to get my car looked at since they were so busy (which could be a good thing depending on how you look at it.) read more

This is going to be a long review, but if you're looking for a good mechanic just spend the 3 minutes to read it!! My experience with Ed started when I ignored a rattling/ groaning sound in my car for a long time and it kept getting louder and louder. I put off going to a mechanic because, well, I'm a girl, and going there sucks. I took my car to Miramar Automotive, they had it for a few hours and performed a "complete inspection" from top to bottom. When they called me to give me the $700 estimate for a bunch of stuff that "might" or "might not be" the reason for the rattling sound, i settled for paying $200 that "might" fix the rattle, but they weren't sure (spoiler alert, it didn't fix the rattle). Anyway.. Ed was referred to my boyfriend from someone he knew in the industry. They immediately discovered that the rattling sound was a broken wheel mount and cracking engine mount, and ordered parts and fixed the problem same day. If the mounts had cracked on the freeway I could be dead!! So I picked up my car that afternoon and could not believe the difference, it drove like a brand new car. I couldn't believe it was mine!!! I was so impressed that they found the problem, PROVED it by taking pictures and explaining everything, then fixed it same day. Then, on my way home in my brand new car, I got T-boned!! A woman drove straight into the side of my car. I was devastated!! It was the first accident I've ever been in and my first time dealing with nightmare insurance companies. So I called Ed and told him what happened. What he did next was incredible and the definition of ABOVE AND BEYOND. Ed took time out of his own busy schedule to explain EVERYTHING about insurance companies to me, and how they were going to rip me off. He did this with absolutely no benefit to himself, as some options he recommended did not include taking my car back to him. He just didn't want to see me get screwed over. I've never met another mechanic who would ever do something like that, he walked me through every step of what they were going to say and he was right every time. I'm not talking 5 or 10 minutes, this was hours of phone calls over around a week period. I ended up deciding to take my car back to Ed and he fixed it sticking to the insurance quote I was provided. My car has never looked or driven better! I'll never go to another mechanic or body shop, and you shouldn't either!! Girls, go here with confidence!! A new way auto is truly a one stop shop for anything and everything. Now they might cost a little more then other shops but I always feel that it is worth it. I've been going to this shop for almost 20 years. Yes I have gone to other shops but none compare to A New Way Auto. I have had a lot of problems with other shops where they rush the job or don't even fix the problem I took my car in for. I have never had a problem with any work done at A New Way Auto. I love how the owner checks every vehicle after the work is done to do a more thorough check to make sure everything is in order. I will continue using their services for many years to come. I send everyone I know to this shop knowing that they will be in good hands. I just got my car out of the shop yet again. This time it wasnt for any car repair it was because I had bought a bunch of aftermarket body parts to have installed and painted. Let me tell you something. They do awesome work for paint and body. I had a two great experiences with them. I first went to pep boys for something wrong with my struts and and axils they supposedly fixed the problem. Less than a yr. later I had problems again but went to A New Way and they said I had to get two new front axels and explained why they failed in the first place. It cost like $800 but I haven't had any problems since. Now I need a timing belt so I will call them to schedule that replacement. I like how they video tape the problem and the repair so you know they did the work. Two thumbs up!! read more

Ok, I have had work done by Ed and his crew for @ 6 + years now on multiple vehicles and have always been treated fairly and after having some warranty work done by the dealer and then a few years later I had a major problem that New Way found that only could have been caused by the work the dealer had done. Ed Ski went out of his way to get the dealer to replace the parts at no charge. This was above and beyond what I think is normal customer service! The car repair business is not easy, as anytime something goes wrong (a part breaks)reguardless if it was even repaired before the last shop that worked on it will get blamed for it....These guys are not cheap but they do quality work and if you have a problem they are very reasonable and they stand behind their work! I just took my car in the other day as it needed the 3 rd new radiator and I told them I no longer wanted the standard plastic / aluminum junk so they found an all aluminum replacement radiator and upon getting it it required a some custom fabrication to fit it in which they had no problem doing. They worked with us to give us exactly what we wanted. Also when it was finished they made it look great .What I expected was an obvously patch job to make a part that would not fit fit. Rusty is amazing. I am an almost daily commuter between SD and Orange. I ended up here when my check engine light came on while I was heading north on the 5. Playing it safe I pulled over and wanted to make sure that everything was okay. Rusty had his guys check it out and let me know that I had an alternator for the wrong year in my vehicle and that my thermostat probably needed to be replaced. He said that I shouldn't have a problem getting him though it would just affect my MPG. So since I have a friend who is a mechanic up north and does the work for me a t discount I will be taking my car up to him, but once I move south in the next year Rusty will have a loyal customer for life.
