I can't believe I haven't thought to write this before, but yeah, this store is awesome. Given that giant evil multinational corporations (Nike, RnR, even lululemon with its awkward libertarianism) dominate so much of running and sports, it's nice to at least be able to buy the stuff from a local place and cool people. Plus, they're way smarter and have a larger selection than somewhere like Sports Basement. read more

I'm a "used to be an athlete in high school" overweight 44 yr old woman who recently decided to begin training using an iPhone app for a 10k and eventually work up to a half marathon. I've been told by others that getting "fitted" for running shoes can make a huge difference in preventing injuries and help your running form. I went to yelp and found A Runners Mind in Burlingame had excellent reviews. I am a little intimidated by specialty stores- especially one for running. I called the store to make sure there would be someone to fit me. Had a friendly conversation with Sarah. Went to the store. She watched me walk in the store without shoes. Then she had me try a neutral shoe. She watched me run indoor and outdoor (that felt weird at first but I was so amazed at how good the shoes felt I totally forgot someone was watching me). I tried and ran in about 4-5 different pairs until I found THE PERFECT SHOES! I love the way they feel. My experience was great. No intimidation at all- down to earth and very friendly. The shoes were about $150 but your paying for their expertise and incredible service! Highly recommend. I will return. read more

I'm such a fan of A Runner's Mind. The store has a really comfortable atmosphere with knowledgeable sales people. One of the store owners, Monte, is super friendly, easy to talk to and an actual runner! What a bonus. He recently helped me pick out a pair of running shoes and they've worked out great. Shopping there is like visiting a friend who happens to have a lot of product knowledge! I've never felt pressure to buy anything and I am really happy with all of my purchases. I originally was looking for a specific type of socks which were only available either online, REI or a specialty running store. I ended up talking to the staff and found out that there is a running club that is free and a training session that you pay to help train up for competitions. They do carry minimalist shoes like Vibrams five finger and will order the size if not present in store. Unlike Nike Running the staff here are a lot more approachable and knowledgeable about the types of shoes and can find a fit for the price and purpose. read more

I was looking for some new multi-purpose shoes for mainly for running, training, weight lifting, so decided to come to A Runner's Mind hearing that they would help analyze my feet. Being my first time here, I was helped by Fazel to determine the right fitting and shoe type. First he first looked at how I ran and then gave me 5-6 options that would help stabilize my feet, I found out my right foot was over pronated! I had 3 different people helping me and giving me advice. That may sound like a lot, but it was actually really helpful. They had me try on 5 shoes and run in each outside. They showed me video feedback of how I was hitting the ground. As a new runner, this was great and badly needed. They even stayed late and didn't rush me at all. I received excellent service at A Runner's Mind. I wondered by, but only had twenty minutes to spare. I entered the store and was immediately greeted and helped. They sized my feet, selected several pairs of shoes for me to try, watched me run a bit down the block and rang up my transaction all in the twenty minute window. I was quickly on my way with a new pair of shoes. She even mentioned I could bring them back within 30 days if I didn't like them. I must say the shoes (Brooks) are an excellent fit and extremely comfortable. In these days of big box sporting goods stores and online 'discounters', it is outstanding to find a small, focused shop dedicated to customer service. I will certainly return! read more

Forget about Zappos and go to this place. The staff here knows every shoe on the wall, and how it fits every type of foot and type of runner. Oh, and also forget Zombie Runner in Palo Alto - they have no idea. The reason you go to a store that specifically sells running shoes is for the expertise of the staff and also that selection is limited to the best shoes. The selection at A Runners Mind concentrates on quality of materials in the shoe, durability, and type of usage the shoes will get. Awesome. They test your stride and be prepared to try on a bunch of different shoes. Feed the parking meter and get comfortable, and leave with a pair of shows that will work for you, and get you out there more often. read more

I've gone to a few running stores and they all provide similar service. Shoe fittings, tryout a few pairs, return without questions. Whats different about this place? I got service from some young fellas, one seemed like a higher schooler. Regardless of age, one thing that sets this place apart is their knowledge of shoes. They didn't have to look up on a computer, they know about all their schools. They even know about the pair of shoes I brought in which they didn't carry anymore. In my case, they eventually did a custom order because nothing in the store fit me. This place really aims to make sure you get the right pair of running shoes for your target goal. read more

Started running outdoors to train for a 5k and my old running shoes were killing me. Decided to try this place having found them on yelp with top ratings & great reviews... Couldn't be more satisfied. Faisal helped me find the right pair. He had me walk around the store and also jog outside in a couple of pairs helping me find the right shoe. In addition to finding the right shoe Faisal advised the price went down on this particular model and saved me some money. This place is solid in every way. I stopped by here today via a friends reference and was not disappointed. Faisal took time to help me understand exactly what I should look for in a running shoe. I'm a novice and what I really wanted was an experience in which I was educated so I would know what to look for in the future. Faisal gave me a few pairs to try and had me try them out outside and quickly saw that I tend to pronate towards the outside. He gave me some quick advice and had me try on a pair of Mizuno Wave Riders and I refused to take them off. I felt like Cinderella (I'm a dude), it was the perfect fit. The staff is very knowledgeable and patient. They work with you to find out how you run, what needs to be improved and how your feet would fit in different pairs. I didn't expect a gait analysis to be free to honest and it was graciously delivered by the very knowledgeable Dawson. He got me trying 4 different pairs after measuring my feet and watching me run. The shoes I ended up with fit like a glove and give me the stability that I need. As a beginner at running, I'm very grateful for all the info. Very cool shop that sold me what I didn't think I needed, but so totally did. I'd been procrastinating buying a new pair of kicks for more than a year, thinking that my Nike's were fine, and this despite that I've had shin splints and now this annoying plantar fascitis. And yeah, my podiatrist recommended I check this place out and get newly outfitted. They do something awesome, which is they analyzed my running gait and fit me, according to what they observed. A lot of places purport to do this sort of thing and then kinda half ass it, but not these guys. They take their job seriously and are all about customer service. I walked in and immediately was asked if they could help. Truth is I went in to kill time while my soup across the street was ready for take-out, but somehow ended up buying a pair of New Balance 1260V7, this after I told them I needed a lot of support on the entire length and width of my feet, plus I like the feel of plushness, not rigidity. It was when I mentioned I had tight calves and needed a lot of stretching before and after a run, that they went into overdrive and plucked out the shoes they thought were the ticket. They totally knew what I was talking about, pointed me to these babies, which I took sort of for a test run in their store, and plunked down a cool $160 plus tax for them. I guess I could've shopped around Amazon and gotten them for cheaper with my Prime membership, but since these guys helped fit me, advised me, and took time out to be there, I thought I should give them the business. By the way, parking's a bit of a hassle, so I had to make sure I put in enough coins, otherwise I would've gotten a ticket, so beware: put your money in those meters. read more

Monte, Jenny, & Todd...what a combo. By far the nicest family I've every met. Oh, and the store is great too. Whether you need a pair of high end shoes, pair of shorts, or just some GU's for your next run, this store has it all. All the staff (Liz & Fazel too!) are extremely knowledgeable and are willing to listen at take advice at the same time. Whether I am running with the Thursday night group (7pm at the store) or the 6am group with Team ARM (BHS Track), I always feel a positive vibe that you don't often experience anywhere else. Don't let his easy charm fool you....MARC knows shoes ! Given that I had a full knee replacement 3 months ago, my walking/running stride is really off kilter, and Marc patiently talked me through the issues. I also gave him the standard "Mom" grilling...which shoe ? why ? what are the benefits of one over the other ? He answered all my questions with helpful suggestions about each one. Most stores don't have this level of "know how" or worse, just dont care - and the difference here shows. A Runner's Mind is the best! They provided me with a customized fit several years ago, and I've re-ordered the same shoes from them a few times since. On my most recent re-order, in a friendly email exchange I asked if they could ship the shoes. Monte offered that someone could drop them off instead, since it would be quicker because one of his coworkers would already be in my area. So, I ordered running shoes in the morning and had them by 2 PM, just in time for an afternoon run on the bay trail. I'm new to the area, and the gentleman who dropped them off gave me warm recommendations for local runs with the ARM running group. Thanks, Monte and the ARM team! Came in for my first ever gait analasys on the fly, as my shoes were basically giving out entirely, and I felt it was time to start treating my feet right. Boy did they do an incredible job here! Do not order shoes here if they do not have a pair that fit when you leave the store. They will offer to order your size if not in stock and it takes 3-5 days to get in. They ask you to pay in advance, ok. Well if the shoes don't fit when they come in... guess what no refund! Store credit!!!! Of course they offered to order another pair. So wait another 3-5 days plus it's a holiday weekend? What if they don't fit ? Easy answer, just Go to a store that have shoes that fit, honestly who would walk out of a store with running shoes that don't fit. Such a shame I've probably bought a dozen pairs of shoes and clothes at this place trying to support a local business, but forget it. Off to a large box store. read more

Bought shoes for my son (cross-country runner) soon after the store opened. Great experience, and unlike shoes bought at Road Runner Sports, they were perfect. The difference was that here they strongly encouraged him to run in the shoes he was trying on. At Road Runner they didn't even suggest it, and they pushed $90 insoles on us (pure profit, zero benefit for the customer; if it was that easy to improve a shoe, they would already be designed that way! don't believe me? look it up: snake oil.) Anyway, we live in SF, but when my shoes wore out, I made a special trip here. Great experience again. Tried on seven pairs of shoes, and ran with them outside. Low-pressure, very helpful staff, great selection, NOT expensive. Locally-owned. read more

This is a jewel of a store in Burlingame that should not be missed id you need anything for running-from advise to apparel. The owners are from a family of extremely competitive runners!!! They offer great personal expertise and enthusiasm for the sport. Why would you buy running shoes from a non-runner if you have this choice? Two of my children, one is in middle school and the other is in college participate in their Tuesday and Thursday runs which start from the store.They have both had wonderful experiences with this.. My middle schooler pleads with me to go. This is enhanced by the expert advice about running from experts that is offered frequently before runs. As a ex-runner myself I know that this training is fabulous. There is a great community spirit and all level of runners are welcome. I guarantee you will love A Runners Mind. Mary L. read more

Great store that cares! I run 20-30 miles a week and just moved to Burlingame. Thought I try then out. I was a bit disappointed with their recommended shoe to replace my Saucony. They suggested that shoe had too much support for me. Within a week of the new shoe I had a shin splint from hell. At this point you may be thinking why the great review. I took them back and they could not have been nicer. They ordered a better supported shoe and said "last thing we would want is to sell you a shoe you are unhappy with". As a marathon runner for over 15 years shoes are the hardest thing to get right and to find a store that cares it a major plus. So big thumbs up for these people. read more

It is so hard for small businesses. They are competing against larger businesses that have a marketing department. Bottomline, we need to support small businesses whenever we can, especially, when we receive quality service. I have been eyeing on a particular item and off chance emailed Runners' Mind. In a short period of time, I received an email from Staff Member Mike stating there was one available for me in my size. In addition, he offered to take it to the other store near my home which was thoughtful. It was something he did not have to do yet it did so without my prompting. And, this was all handled via email in a timely manner. These days, quality service cannot be taken forgranted and business with quality services should be recognized.
