I really want to like this location more because I go there sometimes to buy jewelry for my wife or men's clothes for myself on occasion. In jewelry it's often hard to find somebody to help you, but service is fine once you can find someone, same for menswear. However, as another reviewer commented, older staff seem to be more interested in socializing than voluntarily helping customers, that has been my experience more than once (downstairs), even when you're standing in front of them at the counter! Of course some employees are very good too but the overall big picture there's a lot of room for improvement. read more

the workers in the perfume department are seriously so amazing and I will never stop going to buy their products. the jewelry section absolutely sucks and they need better customer service, perfume department on the other hand is awesome and they need a raise. Macy's is a Federated Corporation and in my experience treats employees horribly. Most are part time so benefits are avoided. I suppose I'm telling you this so you'll be sympathetic to workers there, no matter how rude they are. The store looks very dated and old. Walls and floors marked up and stained. It has a bomb shelter sort of atmosphere with no windows and harsh lighting. The third floor used to be wonderful for gifts but all the pretty things; fine china, table linens, crystal and candles sticks are gone, making room for the furniture from the closed stored down the street. The third floor also has mattresses, some towels and bedding all in a smaller space. The hunt for clothing is confusing as most women's clothing is arranged by type; dresses or jeans, then different women's clothing makers on the second floor arranged by brand. Men's is arranged by designer in the basement. If a man wants chinos, it's easier to search for them on the website where you can find the designers that make chinos, then head to that area. Compare the online price and any coupon codes while your there. It's difficult to get help in the store. It's a competitive floor with max 4 or 5 employees on each level, 2 or 3 during the week, so most sales people stand in front of a register and don't want to leave it, otherwise another employee could get a sale. Cancelling fellow employee's transactions mid ring up and shoving them out of the way isn't uncommon. Emptying fitting rooms or helping customers find something is a waste of time when they could be at a register trying to meet sales goals. As other reviews have said, asking how you're going to pay is required to start a transaction. It can come off sounding rude depending on how it's asked but employees are not trained on how to speak to customers. It's also strange that you have to swipe a card before knowing the total, but evidently not enough customers take issue with it, which is crazy. The card swipe will let the employee know if you are entitled to more discounts. Some departments have leased space in Macy's and are not staffed by Macy's employees. Sunglass Hut, Finishline, Benefit Cosmetics are a few. People staffing in-store vendors know little about other Macy's departments and vice versa. Mattresses and furniture are staffed by commission sales people who take turns greeting people who walk into the area (ups). Regular Macy's employees don't go there. As I mentioned, there's no sales training or customer service/relationship training. Training emphasis is on how to use the register. If you ask for a size 16 x 34 men's white dress shirt, it's not unusual for the reponse to be "You have to go find one and bring it to me and I'll ring you up." Bathrooms are down long stark white hallways by the elevators and are about as nice as most hospital restrooms. Don't expect more than the bare minimum, but even hospitals have towels for drying your hands. Basics like a plain black skirt or white work shirt are well priced. If you aren't comfortable speaking English, let any employee know your preferred language and they will call someone to help. You just have to be ready to do some hunting in a not so pleasant environment and price watch closely. read more

I had such a positive experience today at the Macy's at Hillsdale Mall. Since my brother was visiting from China, I purchased him a pair of Birkenstock. Unfortunately he has already 2 pairs. I tried to do an exchange at the Macy's in the Serramonte Mall. The sale associate informed us that the return has exceeded the return period by a few days. Therefore we picked 2 pairs to exchange for. The Sketchers was not available in the size required. We could'n't do the exchange since the amount paid didn't meet the requirement of equal or more to be able to do the exchange. He checked and discovered Hillsdale has both pair in the proper sizes. We drove down and Tyler greeted us with a great smile. He was such a great help and made the exchange effortless. He provided us with the perfect customer service. He carried on an engaging conversation while waiting for a manager's override. We left happy with the service provided and would return again just to have Tyler help us. I would like to mention that there was a young lady associate in which she started with the transaction. She had another customer so she turn us over to Tyler. She was awesome as well, very accommodating and helpful. Thank you to both. In this days and ages, it's difficult to find good customer service. read more

The sale associates in this Macys must have a double PhD degree in pushing responsibility and selfishness. All I asked for is doing a tuneup on my watch so it fits better. OMG, had to come back 4 times. It must be so pathetic to work in here because a candidate must demonstrate how to push a customer from one person to another person during an interview. This Macy's is a tough one to rate, as it feels like two different stores, depending on the day you visit. The selection of clothing and shoes is always strong. It has all the great brands you expect, and those parts of the store look clean and exciting. That's the high point. The real challenge is the inconsistent service and the effort it takes to shop here. Other times, you can walk through three departments and feel totally invisible, like the staff is busy with tasks behind the counter or just hard to find. It makes you feel like you're doing all the work. The whole experience often gets slowed down by small annoyances: the escalators might be acting up, or the checkout lines take too long, even when the store isn't packed. It's a good, solid store, but the friction makes the shopping trip feel a bit like a guessing game rather than an easy, pleasant visit. read more

Now I remember one of the many reasons I stopped shopping at Macy's. Simply punishing to shop there. I encountered the slowest sales person in the entire world. AND I think she was the only sales person at a register on the lower level which added more frustration!! I realize help is hard to find but if customers can't pay for something the hole gets bigger!! I have not been in Macy's...jeez I can't even remember the last time. I know I vowed never to shop at Macy's again bc their coupons were ridiculously hard to use. So it has been a very long time. My recommendation to Macy's corporate is the format is not working! Macy's Hillsdale luggage section is severely understaffed on Veterans' Day. Most of the staff were assigned to the registers. I tried to flagged down several staff walking towards the employee area. Finally I found someone who was willing to look for the luggage that I wanted. She wrote down the style information and went to the storage area to look. She found it and carried the medium size luggage still in its original box to ring it up. Since I was not able to carry it to my car, she asked Joshua to bring it to my car. He walked with me trying to find the exit where I parked the car. After looking at several exits, we decided that he would wait at one exit while I find my car and drive it to his location. Joshua was so professional, kind, patient, and provided exceptional customer service. Thank you Joshua and the sales staff for all your help. read more

Bought my wife an 18" Tanzanite necklace at Macy's for Christmas. She wore it for about an hour and it fell off. Seems the clasp was bad. We took it back the next day they said it couldn't be fixed and the necklace could not be replaced. There were none available at any Macy's in the country. Bought a nice jacket from men's department and some cologne from their fragrances department, and the employees were very nice. A nice, older blonde woman helped me get a Ralph Lauren set for my dad, as well as two gentlemen (one a big guy wearing glasses named Oren or Oleg, and the other a senior salesman) who saved me money with a new Macy's Card. The store could use a little TLC (particularly the Last Act section), but I'm glad Macy's is still here at Hillsdale. I used to come here almost every other weekend but due to work haven't been able to. Happy to see Macy's is still kicking. read more

According to a data in 2017, 96% of Americans shopped online. I'm one of them. LOL!! Once in a blue moon, I will brave the mall and shop, usually, I know what I want, price, color and size. It's just a matter of fit. For shoes, I need to try them on. Heck, I got almost 5k steps doing it. So....saw an add for Rockport last call, got whopping 60% off reg. price, and done. Well, not that quick. The nice lady told me she will be right back. Meanwhile, 20 minutes later, I was almost done catching up with my Wall Street Journal news, and she finally came back. Did she go on a break? Bad service? I thought about this before writing this review, but decided that I don't get the best service at Macy's, it's a hit or miss, so i don't have a high expectation anyhow, but then I realized, Macy's does a lot of good for the community. I've had the same watch for a long time. It's not a fancy or expensive brand. But for me it is special because my Mother gave it to me when the watch my Father gave me gave out. By accident after years and years of dedicated operations, it accidentally slipped out of my bag and fell onto the sidewalk. The sight of the shattered face struck me as if an arrow hit me in the heart. As I searched Yelp for watch repair shops, I recalled Macys Watch Repair service counter. Luckily Macy's is open everyday. I swung by and spoke to Adolfo who works a few days a week. He said the time to fix wasn't very long. They have the parts available onsite. The repair is insured for a year. What a relief! Truly cost was immaterial to me. For those curious, the charge was $55. I decided to pick the watch up the next day. It was returned to me with a nice crystal (face) even better than I had it before (shiny and without the scratches I had on it). Thanks to Macy's for keeping this department open. I hope everyone keeps in mind the value of a business that is here for years and years. read more

If I could give it a 0, I would. We went into browse & they had no prices on any of the toys. There was a QR code next to the toy that led us to the Macy's app... which still didn't tell us the price after scanning (after scanning the bar code it said not found). When we decided to just get the toy, we tried to locate an employee to ring us up. No one was at the register near the toys. There were about 7 employees working in the vicinity. No one greeted or asked us if we needed help. One employee ignored us when we tried to ask. There were 3 employees where the jewelry was that were talking and laughing within eye sight. Another employee by the perfume with another employee told us to go and wait at an empty register. Finally we tried to yell to ask of anyone could help us since the 6 employees that were in the vicinity were all ignoring us and finally another employee from the juniors section who was doing go backs ran to help us. She was only person in the entire area that greeted or tried to help us the entire time we were there. 0/10 - I remember now why I stopped going to this store. read more

If you're thinking of buying a kitchen appliance, mattress, linen or anything else on the top floor - you might want to think again. There were ZERO employees on the entire floor. This wasn't right before closing - it was about 7PM on a weekday and it was a total ghost town. I walked around the kitchen department for about 5 minutes and could hear a customer in the linen department periodically yelling, "Hello? Hello?" I assume they're obviously trying to cut back - seems like each floor only has one place to check out. That would be fine if there was actually an employee there but there wasn't. Apparently if you want to buy something on the top floor, you'll have to lug it down to the third floor where there's a check-stand right near the escalators. I did see a single cashier there - and about 4 people in line. I may have expected this from Sears or maybe Target - but not the most expensive store of them all. Common Macys. Had to get some new shirts, pants and a pair of hiking/job site shoes. I went to Macys Hillsdale and grabbed what I needed. However the last item was the shoes. I knew what I wanted and to my surprise the shoe was there. I grabbed the shoes and could not find anyone to help me. After 20 minutes I was about to leave very frustrated and I was going to leave the $500 plus amount of clothing I had in my hands. Well, just before I got up to leave.....in walks Karla and Raul. They were the nicest people I could hope for. Raul was apologetic and super helpful getting the shoes I wanted. He is definitely an asset to Macy's. Karla rang me up and got me on my way very fast and efficient. She also saved me a few $ by signing me up as a rewards member. I will be back to shop at Macy's Hillsdale due to the fact of the outstanding efforts of Karla and Raul. Thanks again Karla and Raul!! You guys rock!! read more

I love visiting this Macy. They have good selection, the prices are reasonable and the staff is excellent. We are Platinum members so we get additional discounts that makes the proces very competitive to what one gets from Amazon, for example. Add to it the personalized service and the impact on local economy, I will shop here anyday versus online shopping. The only big issue I have with this location is the cell phone coverage inside the store. The coverage is very poor in the mens section for sure. Higher floors have slightly better coverage but it is still pathetic. The "macysfreewifi" hotspot combined with wifi calling makes it tolerable. I am not sure if Macy's deliberately jams the signals to prevent people from doing comparison shopping. If they are not they should work with telcos to improve coverage in the store. read more

This location has a small selection of everything. Now they close at 7p.m because of the pandemic. I miss shopping at the bigger locations in Silicon Valley. This is the only nearby mall that's open now that is located less than an hours drive from where I live. There's plenty of parking ar the mall now. read more

I like Macy's in general, and this is one of the stores where I really enjoy shopping in. It's a smaller Macy's store but it has everything that you need and great selection. Numerous options of clothing, shoes, bags. This Macy's is part of the Hillsdale Mall and that makes it even more enjoyable when you can shop at other stores after you're done at Macy's. I especially like the jewelry department at this Macy's. I purchased unique pieces of jewelry here that I did not see at other Macy's stores. The store is well maintained and is in good shape and I hope will remain open for many many years. I don't want retail stores to go away, they are a great asset in our lives. read more

My husband bought one engagement ring in November 2020, we dropped back in Macy's fine Jewelry to fix because the ring was big for me... they said is gonna be ready in 3 weeks, we waited 2 months and the ring never get ready, we went to Macy's to ask so many times and nobody give us any information, and after we received one phone call from the manager he said they lost my ring and they don't have anymore the same, my husband was very patient he went in Macy's again and choose another ring, another color because the one he bought for me was put os stock... and they said the new ring is gonna be ready in 1 week.... and now 1 more month and we never received any information about the new ring we already got married and I never got my engagement ring... the stuff over there always very rude and rude. Time warp to 1980! This Macy's makes me sad. The only reason I was here was to make a return on a gift and we are still looking at a $100 gift card to burn, but we're actually having trouble finding anything worth getting here that is a good price. While the cosmetics department seems to be still alive and kicking (but unfortunately, I don't use most of the brands that are here), all the other parts seem to be slow and on their last dying breath. Menswear seems to get moderate traffic, but take the elevator upstairs (the elevator that seems to be older than my 34 years) and it's like a wasteland. We went up there for the housewares department and were very disappointed to see that all the displays were sparse, the sale area was disorganized and didn't have much selection, and a lot of areas were empty. For an area where rent is so high, I'm surprised they're able to keep retaining this space when it's clearly not really being used. The brands at the cosmetic department are the old school overpriced ones (i.e. Lancome, Estee Lauder, Shiseido, Origins) with a few good contemporary ones (i.e. Benefit, Philosophy, Urban Decay, Smashbox), but I typically prefer going to Sephora for more selection, less hassle from salespeople when sampling items, and better frequent buyer rewards. Lastly, the clothes here are mediocre and not particularly stylish or good quality for the money. The brands carried are also not very good in general, and this varies by Macy's -- it's this particular store that doesn't seem to have a good buyer working for them. Overall, sad to see the effort coming out of this Macy's and I'm guessing with their store closures increasing, this one will be out soon as well. read more

I just wanted to give a shout out to Ms, Tomoe Jacobson who helped me with the Mess Macy's caused me. i went to this store to seek help about my unreceived package that was supposedly delivered 2 days ago. I was upset and frustrated coz it was a very important package. But Ms Tomoe from the Customer Service extended her helping hand and stayed with me for an hour to resolve my issues. In the end, i didnt get the resolve that i wanted but for some reasons i left the store not upset not the way i was before i entered the store. Let me preface that I do not understand how the rewards program works. All I know is that I purchased two items online using my macys credit card and returned the items at the store. Yet for some reason I owe money on my credit card. I called customer service and was told I was given rewards, but I still needed to make a payment on the credit card for the two items I returned. So I'm paying cash for the rewards? I do not understand. I've been a cardholder for over 30 years and no longer am. I just wanted to provide a warning if you are using your macys credit card. read more

So Weird. Shopping at this local Macy's on the second floor and I run into a Thred Up pop up. Thred up is an online consignment store that's all secondhand goods and I guess Macy's is formed a partnership with them so you don't have to wait for your clothes to arrive in the mail, you can just go to Macy's and try them on before you buy it. The concepts are interesting but it feels weird to be standing in an upscale goodwill inside Macy's. I want to buy Goodwill, I'll go to Goodwill. Prices also seem a bit high although they had the cutest J.Crew size small top with little ivory buttons with anchors on them. See picture. read more

Hillsdale Macy's is understaffed and not capable of providing any decent customer service. We were trying to get a pair of men's shoes but there was no one working in that department. I asked a lady at the register, and she told me she couldn't leave the register. A different associate was able to help, unwillingly, but quickly left after giving us the shoes. We needed a different size and there was no one to help. We walked the entire floor and saw two employees, both at the cash register - one was the associate who got us the shoes. I was told to wait in the shoe department. They would help in a moment. After 15 minutes, I returned to the cash register and asked if they could call for extra help. My associate said, no - she was covering the entire floor. I asked for a manger, as it had been well over 30 minutes since we had started this quest. She then told the customer that she was helping, that she needed to help me. From there it just went on and on. We requested two other shoe sizes, which she showed the store having in inventory, but she couldn't find them. Now I'm online trying to find which Macy's has the shoes in stock so I can go pick up as I need them in the next couple of days. There is no way to reach a live person - I've been on hold while typing this review. It is unbelievable how downhill Macy's has gone. I also went to "contact us" on Macy's web-site, but there is no option for customer service. So much for being a Platinum Card Holder! read more

I bought a rug for my living room for $1200.00 and it started changing color within months from purchase date. I never step on it with shoes because I never wear shoes at home. Macy's refused to give me my money back because they said there is a 1" inch by 2" inch label underneath that warns about this may happen. Hillsdale Macy's Furniture Store. The sale racks were well maintained, but overall this location is small and not worth the effort if you're really searching for something and need a large selection; head to Stanford if that's the case. I'm willing to upgrade Macy's quite a bit from my previous rating, since that review was predicated on the messy state of the clothing department. My last visit was pleasantly surprising as the store was orderly and more like a typical Macy's, even though I was there in the late afternoon, when I would imagine there was plenty of time for customers to create a mess.
