Blue Curl: Good Weekly Service, Poor Management…read more I hired Blue Curl because I wanted a company that could do more than clean a pool. I expected competent technical advice, professional communication, and accountability when problems arose. Unfortunately, that's not what I experienced. Blue Curl recommended and installed an inline chlorine feeder at my home. Less than a year later, the system stopped performing as intended. I expected a technical evaluation supported by facts. Instead, I spent nearly three months trying to get straightforward answers. I repeatedly asked simple questions: What failed? What evidence supports that conclusion? Why is replacement the appropriate solution? Did the failure contribute to increased chemical usage? Those questions were never answered in a clear, consistent, management-led manner. Instead, I received conflicting explanations, unanswered emails, and a replacement quote that wasn't supported by a documented failure analysis. One employee called to discuss the repair but admitted he hadn't reviewed Blue Curl's previous diagnosis or its own replacement quote before contacting me. During that same conversation, he proposed an open-ended change order for possible plumbing modifications without being able to explain what additional work might be required, why it would be necessary, or what the final cost could be. I wasn't willing to authorize undefined work with undefined cost before the underlying problem had even been established. To be clear, this review is not about the weekly service technician. He has consistently been professional, honest, and technically competent. My concerns are with Blue Curl's management and how the company handles technical and billing issues once they become more complicated than routine weekly service. What disappointed me most wasn't the equipment failure. Equipment fails. It was the absence of ownership. No one took responsibility for providing a complete technical explanation, coordinating communication, or standing behind the company's own recommendations. Trust is earned when a company can explain what failed, why it failed, and why its proposed solution is the right one. After months of asking those questions, I never received those answers. I ultimately decided to terminate Blue Curl and move my business elsewhere. If you're looking for routine pool cleaning, your experience may be different. But if you expect disciplined troubleshooting, clear communication, coherant billing, and management accountability when something goes wrong, my experience suggests you should carefully consider your options before hiring this company.

In 2025, I hired Jim Kitchen of Mamason Koi to transform my pond into a fishing pond. I want to…read morebegin by saying that I believe Jim is a genuinely good person, and this review is intended to honestly reflect my experience. When I first spoke with Jim, I explained that my vision was to create a pond that could eventually be stocked for fishing. Another company I had consulted didn't understand what I was trying to accomplish, but Jim assured me he did and was excited to help bring that vision to life. During the project, I purchased approximately $2,500 worth of koi from Jim and hired him to build a $45,000 waterfall, install electrical service, and add an aeration system to support a healthy fish population. The finished waterfall is beautiful, and I'm very happy with both the waterfall and the quality of the koi. Unfortunately, the overall project experience was disappointing. The original timeline was approximately six weeks, but the project ultimately stretched to nearly four months. While delays can happen, communication throughout the process became increasingly difficult. We also experienced ongoing water loss because the pond did not have a liner and water was leaking from somewhere in the pond. Jim recommended applying bentonite clay to help seal the pond naturally. Another major issue occurred when approximately 4,000 pounds of bentonite clay were delivered to my property. After dropping off the material, Jim became unreachable for several days despite approaching rain and no work being completed. When I finally reached him, he explained that he was dealing with personal issues and offered to refund the remaining balance rather than finish the project. Because the clay had already been delivered, I spent over an hour on the phone convincing him to complete the work. While the work was eventually finished, the bentonite clay has left the pond so cloudy that visibility is less than half an inch. Jim insured us the clay would eventually settle so that we could see through our water again. Fast forward 8+ months and we still can't see anything in the pond, despite doing several 50% water changes. We can no longer enjoy seeing our koi or much of anything beneath the surface, which was a significant disappointment after investing in both the fish and the pond. The last major issue involved the continuation of the project. After discussing everything with Jim, I was willing to move forward and hire him for additional work, including pond pump covers and stocking the pond with game fish, the original purpose of the entire project. Jim seemed enthusiastic about continuing. However, despite multiple text messages over approximately six weeks, I never received the requested quote or any meaningful follow-up. Eventually, I expressed my frustration, explaining that I had repeatedly asked to move forward without success. In the end, we mutually agreed that it was best not to continue working together. Based on my experience, I believe Jim has strengths in koi selection, pond maintenance, and building attractive water features. However, I also experienced significant project delays, inconsistent communication, and personal circumstances that repeatedly affected the completion of the work. Given the overall investment of roughly $60,000, I expected a much higher level of project management and follow through. Throughout the process, I believe I was patient and flexible, giving Jim considerable freedom to complete the work as he saw fit. My hope in writing this review is not to discourage anyone from hiring Jim, but to provide an honest account of my experience so prospective customers can make an informed decision and have realistic expectations regarding timelines, communication, and project completion.
