Café Lalibela…read moreis a family-owned Ethiopian restaurant that has a long history here in the Valley going back to the 90s. I have dined here on a few occasions over the years. I love traveling to Africa and have visited a number of times. But have not made my way over to Ethiopia yet. Café Lalibela serves authentic Ethiopian cuisine with recipes that have been passed down through generation. The family that owns this place are passionate about sharing their culture. One of the family members came out and greeted our table. She shared a little bit about the history of Café Lalibela and how they made their way to Tempe. The staff also described the food that we were about to eat as they brought it out. We ordered a couple of platters and enjoyed eating it communally. The menu consists Ethiopian favorites like Doro Wat, Tibs, Kitfo and a variety of vegan and gluten-free dishes. I am a big lentil fan and love that lentils are a big part of Ethiopian cuisine. I had the Lalibela Deluxe platter in front of me most of the evening and enjoyed the flavors and spices of each of the items. Ethiopian food is so vibrant and colorful. If you have never tried, they do not use silverware to pick up their food. Food is eaten with Injera - a spongy pancake-like flatbread that you use to scoop up your food. Café Lalibela has beautiful African décor all around the restaurant. They have a small shop in the front that sells gifts, food items, tea and coffee. I bought a bag of coffee beans to take home.

Flavor was alright, I guess not too sure what to have expected. One of the meats that were given to us, which happened to be my favorite, there was literally maybe three pieces to it, then the rest had a bit more. Ended up just letting my friend eat the whole thing since there wasn't as much protein as we thought there was going to be. The meal was suppose to feed two I believe. The appetizer we got was probably the best thing we ordered in my opinion.

I was surprised, I definitely didn't expect them to be so spicy but it was perfect because I love spicy food. I don't think I've ever had hot wings with that much spice. I got the Penne Alla Vodka and as always it was amazing. I'll definitely say it was better this time, it had so much sauce and the perfect amount of veggies. The sauce is so creamy and flavorful, I did add some chili flakes to give it a little kick. The sausage is delicious, it reminds me of the sausage from supreme pizzas. Everything together is the perfect bite, there's so many different flavors. The portion size is perfect. The food is definitely made with love. Our service was amazing, our waitress was friendly and catered to our needs. She made sure we had water and soda the entire time we were there. There was a little mess up with our order and she was very understanding about it. Like I've said before, I love the interior design. I think it's beautiful and looks very modern. The restaurant is spacious and has so many different seating options. I recommend checking it out!

All the staff were friendly & welcoming. Our server was prompt to our table. We ordered our usual. Hubby got a beer & I got red sangria. Both were good. We get a full other of the garlic bread without cheese. Their garlic bread is the best garlic bread in AZ! Hubby got the spaghetti with marinara sauce & added 3 meatballs. I got the chicken parmigiana, but on the fettuccine I got Alfredo sauce. All of the food was excellent! The best we have had. The only reason for the 4 stars is all of our empty cups & plates remained on our table until after we left. We even ordered another order of garlic bread to take home after we were done eating, & the dishes remained on the table. I didn't take any pictures since we got the same food I've posted pictures of before.

It was about 5:30 PM on a Wednesday and the place was Poppin! The bar was completely full and it was loud!. We did not have a reservation and the only open seating was at the bar or high tops in the bar area. We were quickly greeted and our server was incredibly on top of it! I noticed that the main menu had a line at the bottom that stated a gluten-free menu would be available upon request. I did ask to see this menu as gluten-free is my dietary preference, not an allergyand I was brought a complementary gluten-free bun instead of the pretzel bread. I thanked our server and told him not to worry that it was just a preference and he told me that he treats all gluten friendly requests as an allergy. I really appreciated the care and concern he had for my health and well-being. This is unprecedented at most restaurants. They had a very extensive gluten-free menu and I can't wait to go back and try so many more items. We did try the Leonard burger and made quite a few modification requests - all of which were 100% accommodated. This burger was so incredibly juicy! My entire hand was dripping by the time I got done eating it. Everything else we tried was delicious. I have no complaints or suggestions for improvement and will definitely be returning soon!

She helped me select the Cabana Boy cocktail and was happy to swap it out if it wasn't to my liking. It was tasty, unique, and had a fun smoky presentation. We shared several small plates and everything was yummy. We started off with the foie gras cones, very rich but a fun start to the meal. The beet salad and patatas bravas were also super flavorful and I would recommend ordering! The meatballs were good but I wouldn't say are a must-order. For dessert, we tried the Baked Arizona which was light and flavorful and had a mix of textures that I wasn't expecting but worked well!

She did a great job of making suggestions, and describing the flavor of the dishes as we were deciding what to order. My husband and I both started with a mezcalita - a great beverage with Smokey mezcal and a little kick with their house-made chipotle salt on the rim. We started snacking with the Mediterranean olives and the hummus with feta from the happy hour menu and they were a great way to start. Then we tried the sourdough tomato toast. We ordered two of the whipped smoked salmon cones which packed great flavor, but they were definitely a quick bite! Then we had the lamb meatballs where the flavor of the meat was great and the sauce that accompanied them was outstanding and really made the dish. My husband finished with the Berkshire-duroc pork chop and found it to be a great way to finish our meal. The ambiance of the restaurant has a great vibe for enjoying time with friends and family. The location is great where there are other shops and restaurants in the area to enjoy.

I'm aware its a brewery but all the food just seemed soul-less. Like the ceviche from an outward appearance seemed fresh and colorful but it wasn't. I don't believe the server knew how to handle the less than formal style of the group I was with, but they did not turn us away and provided phenomenal service. The drinks had elegant garnish, and were well made. The most complicated might have been a vodka soda, but the additional touch was nice. For a start we ordered the oysters, which was kept everyone stuck between being nice and fair, and wanting to take all for themselves. We also ordered the octupus which was very good. For my main, I had the salmom rillete. Well made and pesented - I only thought to take pictures after I ate. Our group was never rushed for the bill and we enjoyed a beautiful evening sitting on their porch. I am looking forward to going back more "prepared" and enjoying their seabass or beef bourguignon.
