I had been looking for a place to repair my favorite (discontinued) travel camera for almost a couple of years. Surprisingly many places here in the Bay Area don't repair digital cameras - I was told multiple times to just buy a new one. Thankfully I found the team at A1 Photo!! I had two issues with the camera and since it was discontinued took a while to find the parts so my camera was in their care for at least a couple months. Brendan was especially helpful throughout the whole process - he communicated with me proactively and whenever I would call for an update. He was very responsive both over the phone and email. I very much appreciated the time he took to help me find a loaner camera for a trip I had since mine was still in repair. I requested a roll of 35MM film to be developed. They said it would take about a week to finish. Instead, the process took four weeks. I would visit and call multiple times--first they claimed that they could not find it. Then, once found, they said it was stuck under the seat of the driver's car. My film was clearly being transported irresponsibly, and they clearly do not have an organized process. They never offered to refund me in any capacity, despite turnover time being four times longer than normal. I would not recommend going here. There are other places in Berkeley that deliver much better service and quality. read more

The man says film is dead, proceeds to process and scan, three rolls of 35 mm film charges 80 bucks! Film is not dead; actually I know a wedding photographer who shoots medium format with a film Contax. I'm mostly a digital shooter but like film quality. City of Berkeley tells me they lost my live scan that A1PhotoLab submitted back in October. So they offered to do a free live scan so I wouldn't have to pay another $50. However, somehow their machine will not read my prints. I asked A1 if the original prints they submitted actually made it to the DOJ since without the prints I am on a hold up. 3 days later after digging through files they call me with answer I was looking for. A1 went above and beyond and I really appreciate it. read more

If I could I would give zero stars. I went to get passport photos for my son. The pictures had a issue with the background not homogeneous. I told the lazy guy in the store but he told me it was fine. When I went to the clark office they did not accept my application because of the picture. I had to organize my entire family morning to go to the city clerk, since both parents and kids have to be present. After we got rejected we all went back to the A1 store. It was 9:35am. The store was supposed to open at 9:30 but it was still closed. We waited for another 20 mins but no one showed up. We decided to leave and go somewhere else to take our pictures made. Bottom line we lost an entire morning and 35$, only because the guy was too lazy to make another shot at my son. Worst experience ever! Do not go there. read more

They don't check their work! Awhile back I had them digitize a music cassette of an old band I played in. They had done previous work for me, but this time they screwed up. The cassette sounded great but the CD was awful. They didn't check the work. But I had them redo it and it was fine. Last year I took a VCR cassette, and they only digitized the first 1/3 of it! Again, they didn't check the work. So they don't get another chance from me. If you have old media and no way to play it, don't bring it to A1 because you can't check their work and they certainly won't. read more

Like the review that follows. A-1 Photo is refreshingly unhurried and attentive to detail, quietly scornful of lesser competitors, charming, and made for compliments... I stood, singularly nonplussed, in front of the mean FedEx girl at the mailing store round the way from my Oakland abode. We both stared down at a pair of very sorry passport photos. "Eighteen dollars," she said with a mean and pathetic sass. I sighed. "I've had a passport application rejected before because the photos weren't just right. I want to check the guidelines before I pay for these." She bristled but stayed quiet. I left, and when I got home and CHECKED the guidelines, I knew there was no going back. No, it was time to call A-1 Photo. Guess what? They did it right, and they did it for almost half the cost. SO worth going into Berkeley. They had way better equipment (digital, oh wow FedEx), let me approve the photos before they printed them, and all the while chatted me up on everything from how to submit my passport form correctly, to my A/V issues at home, to how to best fight an unjust parking ticket. This was the third time I'd been there - the last two were for fingerprinting (the scam perpetrated by the state on all who work in many different schools). Those visits were similarly professional, friendly, unhurried, informative, and reasonably priced. They were nothing but patient with my scarred, almost unprintable fingers. I haven't gotten pictures or videos processed/modified there, but from what I can tell they have heaps of great equipment and they know how to use it. I know for a fact that they only use super high quality media, so you're not paying for an easily ruined dvd DUD. Fuck all the surly, messy, overpriced packing/copy/printing/photo stores in the world! Fight back with A-1 photo! (Note: this is not a packing or mailing store. But still.) read more

Total and complete ripoff. I went to a different place to get some video transferred from tape to DVD - the guy was going to charge me $30 TOTAL to transfer 3 minutes of video (one minute from each of 3 tapes). But his machine was broken. So I went here instead. They wanted to charge me $125 PER TAPE!!! The guy behind the counter says "That doesn't sound right" and calls his boss. Sure enough, the price was $125 per tape. $375 TOTAL!!! One hundred and friggin twenty five dollars per tape. I mean, seriously?!?! For something the other guy was going to charge me $30 for and when most other places charge $20 per tape? It makes me wonder what other stuff they're massively over-charging people for. read more

This is absolutely the best of the best. I had less than 10 days to have an obituary and a video (dvd) to be made for my mother's funeral. I must be completely honest the owner, (his name is HAPPY ) and the two employees Brenden and T, at the Berkely location was more than accommodating. I simply told Happy what I had envisioned and he made it a reality. Months later my son needed business cards, once again he gave his ideas and we beyond satisfied. My memories! All my old video footage from my parents and grandparents i can show my kids. My new tv didnt have the old connections and they where able to convert it all to a dvd. The bald guy up front was awesome and seemed to know what he was doing. if you have any old footage i would recommend them they have more options than the big department stores. read more

I went there to take passport photo. The photo was not taken well. It turns out that I was not facing straight to the camera but the photograper did not notify me when she pressed the shutter. There was no flashlight, meaning the shades are obvious in the photo produced. They ask for 10 dollars to send me a copy of the digital version, which should cost them 1 minute and no material cost. I had a great experience here. The fellow working behind the counter was totally willing to help me print my photos from film. The first time i got my photos back (rather large prints), the color was all off and the scans were obviously too small for the printed image. However! I went back and said as much, and i got the prints in a much much better condition (nearly perfect?) SAME DAY. I'll take one star for not doing it perfectly the first time... but, dang, that makes me sound like a harda**. 4.5 is more realistic. These fellows do an awesome job. read more

I have had several occasions to use the services at A-1 Photo & Video Lab on University Avenue in Berkeley. Each time, the services have been reasonably priced and professionally taken care of without any drama. Today, I went there for a Livescan to get records reviewed. On an internet search and calling local police departments, the prices for these services were sometimes over $200 with appointments required. I called, walked in to the store, with a total cost of $45 which includes the agency fee and $20 for the "rolling fee." He told me what items I needed to bring with me. Everything went smoothly and pleasantly. This prompted me to write this review. Small businesses like A-1 are important to my community. When a business consistently makes my life a lot easier, they deserve some recognition. And 5 stars. read more
