This is not a way to do business, and I caution all before proceeding with them for your project.

The original 2wk estimate for fabrication and installation is now at over 7wks and still not done. The originally planned installation date was a no show with no call or notice. Instead Stone Empire installers came the next day without scheduling it with me, never asking if I would be on site and available. I only knew they were coming because I had called them when they didn't show up and was told I was never scheduled for the date and that they would be out the next day. During the installation they removed an upper cabinet to make it easier to fit the countertop. This was not needed but it did make it easier to place. My complaint is that they didn't even try to rehang the cabinet after the countertop was in and everyone left except for 1 person who stayed behind to drill the sink faucet holes. This will cost me another day of both my contractor's and my time. My next complaint, the electrical outlet holes do not line up and need more grinding and adjustment. These outlets were in place before they came out for measurements to create the template. The electrical outlets are standard sized, nothing tricky. Once the quartzite was installed and I noticed the mistake, they told me they could not fix the it until after the glue dries since since grinding to fix the problem would would make too much dust which wouldn't be good for the wet glue. This means the extra grinding needed to fix the outlets has to wait and will involve another day of my time. Whether it was calling them to track my lost slab, to confirm installation dates, or the multiple calls regarding the instillation issues; contacting them has been like pulling teeth.... They don't call back despite claiming they will, they do not call or email updates, warnings for delays or issues. The front office, the fabrication team, and install team seem to have no communication with each other and just pass the buck along with no solutions or effort to correct things. In short - DO NOT USE STONE EMPIRE FABRICATION. Tez Marble, the store selling my quartzite has a great selection from which to choose. But between either Tez or Stone Empire losing my original slab and substituting a different one, and all the problems that followed; I recommend choosing a more reliable fabricator and tracking the sales person as they label your slab sold!

Since we came with a diagram and measurements of the slabs ready, we received a quote on the spot, and we were shocked that the quote was about half the price of a nearby competitor and a fraction of the price of estimates for stone and installation online. They were very accommodating and super helpful generally. Once we paid for the stone in person a few weeks later, we went to the back to choose the 3 slabs. They were helpful in telling us which slabs might not be as nice considering we wanted smaller patterns. Then on the day of our kitchen renovation, the men who came to cut and sand the stone in our kitchen and took the whole day. They were really careful and made sure it fit perfectly. Douglah review After…read moreliving in our house for over 25 years, we decided to redo our kitchen - appliances, cabinets, floors, countertops, lighting, etc. We also wanted to update our laundry room and hallway bathroom. We were looking for a business that would handle everything from design to installation. We met with Leila Douglah and her staff in their showroom in Lafayette. Fast forward 2 years, and we now have a wonderful kitchen, laundry room and bathroom, and except for the purchase of the major appliances (refrigerator, ovens and cooktop), we never had to work with anyone else. We are very happy with the results, and while there were some snags in the construction process (that may or may not have been partly Douglah's fault), the entire process went professionally and smoothly. Douglah Designs is an all-in-one design/construction service. As you might expect, the total cost of the kitchen remodel was probably higher than if we did more of the legwork ourselves and used multiple vendors. But there are certainly advantages to offset the increased expense. The project was seamless and professional. Many of the craftsmen that Douglah Design uses are employees, not contracted. There is no finger pointing between designers and contractors; they all work together to use make things work. To us, the extra expense was definitely worth it. My wife and I are pretty picky when it comes to design, and Leila and her staff were very patient with us. We did have a similar esthetic, so we were usually on the same page from the start. Leila and Rachel Steely had a level of experience and industry knowledge that was a great advantage. Watching them work on the design and materials selection was very impressive and gave us high confidence that they REALLY knew what they were doing. As we realized, designing a kitchen is actually quite a complicated process, with thousands of details that we would not have even known about, let alone been able to address. But the designs and plans handled every detail and issue beautifully. Douglah recommended vendors and products with which they had experience and confidence, which saved us the trouble of having to vet each product, and which gave us confidence in the products. One limitation of working with Douglah Designs is that you are somewhat limited to products and vendors with which they are familiar and confident, so that may constrain your choices (and which may increase the cost of the project). But we felt that limited choices and extra cost were outweighed by the dependability and quality of the products that Douglah recommended. Overall, we were very happy working with Douglah Designs. They are not for everyone - if you have a different esthetic, or a different budget, or want more control over the process, you probably would be happier elsewhere. But if you want a top notch design and installation and have the budget, we highly recommend Douglah Designs.

However, the project manager kept disregarding our requests. When we finally were able to speak to the pm's supervisor, the supervisor wasn't even aware of our situation. After bringing him up to speed, the supervisor agreed that the work wasn't up to standard. We kept insisting they bring in someone with the workmanship to fix the shower tile and grout issues. They finally agreed and scheduled the new contractor for the following week. The evening before he was to arrive, we get a message that he couldn't make it, and the work was again delayed another week. The new contractor fixed most of the issues but wasn't able to salvage the shower floor tile. We requested a credit for the shoddy work, and they initially refused saying it was a matter of preference and not a workmanship issue. After another few weeks of back and forth, they finally agreed to credit us a small amount. We're still waiting for that check in the mail, which I'm sure we'll have to follow up on after we return home from vacation. The full timeline of the project was 12 weeks. They knew we lived in a one bedroom one bath. We were left without a toilet for about a week and a half, and without a functioning shower for 10 weeks. They made no effort to make up for the inconvenience or even try to prioritize any of the issues we kept bringing up.
