I wish Yelp allowed zero stars. Even if it did, I'd give Six Nails Salon on Thompson Street -100 stars. They are awful. I booked a pedicure earlier this week for Friday at 11:45 AM. Today, I started getting texts that they moved my appointment to 12:00. Then I got another message asking for my ETA, followed by more messages changing the time again, first to 12:22, then 12:23, then 12:25. At that point, I had no idea what my actual appointment time even was. I told them I could arrive at 12:15 or earlier if needed, but the constant changes made it impossible to plan. I canceled because the whole thing was so disorganized. Then they told me I was a "no-show" for my original appointment and said they would charge a cancellation fee, even though they were the ones repeatedly changing the time. Completely unprofessional. Poor communication, no respect for your time, and chaotic scheduling. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Not only that, they explained everything to me, gave me tips for how to take care of it, fixed a broken nail (at no added cost), and then even when I left after close chased me down a few blocks away because I had left an AirPod behind. I was in NYC as a tag-along wife for a week and decided to get my nails done. Chose this place because of the location and the online reviews (thank you to those of you that take the time). A number of reviewers talk about how pretty it is - It IS pretty! They put thought into more than just the decor, they've separated the bathroom door from the rest of the floor so that you don't feel like you're on top of the bathroom. The chairs aren't the most comfortable, but they set you in the perfect position to get your nails done AND they match the decor, too. You can book online, which is convenient. I don't think I realized it, but I must have booked the first appointment because no one else was there, but they trickled in after I got there. The online booking must be to make sure they have your credit card number in case of a no show, because I gave my name when I walked in the door and I was asked what I was there for (in her defense, there was no one behind the desk and the gal happened to be walking by the door when I went in). I couldn't remember the name of what I signed up for, so said something like "rose something - a gel manicure" (checking now, it was the Rose Spa Gel Manicure). I ended out getting a simple gel manicure, which is fine because that's all I was charged for (although that 10 minute hand massage would have been wonderful). I got gel and was pleased with the quality of the product and choice of colors. My nails look fantastic. I would like to mention that I usually hate it when the place trims the cuticles, because they quite often over do it and take off the layer that protects you from bacteria and infections. I let her do it, because I've been negligent at caring for my nails for about 4 months, she did a good job and only cut off that sort of invisible layer that she'd scraped off before the trimming. Update: I was invited back for a redo free of charge and received an excellent quality manicure, which is what I am accustomed to from this nail salon. I'm glad they were able to rectify that one bad experience because every time I had gone to A6 before that, I received a perfect manicure every single time. It's also nice to see they value long-term clients. A6 is my favorite nail salon to go to in Manhattan and I'm happy they were able to regain my trust because I think it would've been difficult to find a salon with as clean, precise, and high quality manicures. Does this manicure look worth $100 to you? I don't think so. The nail tech kept filing away at my nails after I repeated more than once that I want to keep them long. She did such a messy job with the polish and the tips of my nails feel rough and not smoothed out. So disappointed. Came in as a walk in. A very small shop but filled with super cute decor. The girl asked me what I wanted and she did exactly what I asked for. She took her time to make sure every was even and nicely painted. Ahhmazing job. Customer service is 5/5 It is a little pricey but the care they put in justifies the prices for me. Let's see if it stands the rest of time now. If not, I'll be back to update. But I'm a very happy girl at the moment ---UPDATE! Less than 2 days have past my nails have been chipping. Lovely nail salon! The interior is designed so beautifully, mostly wood and a lot of pothos - so different from the usual salon. I made an appointment thru Yelp message and had no problems. I don't usually come to this place to get my nails done but I needed to get a fresh set prior to a trip and my usual nail girl had some complications with her scheduling. The reviews seemed alright so I decided to stop by because I needed to get my old hard gel set removed and then wanted to get a fresh gel set. The ambiance of the nail salon was nice, but the first major red flag was that the girl helping me used the roughest nail bit on the drill to remove my old set. I was a bit hesitant since my normal nail girl doesn't use such a rough nail bit and will take her time removing the hard gel, but she said it was the "only way" to get rid of the hard gel. I wasn't aware at the time, but I realized that she went all the way down to my natural nails with the rough nail bit because my nails are now so frail and extremely weak. The shaping and cutting of my nails was also off. Some nails were left longer than others and I felt like everyone was rushing so they could go home. Normally my nails are strong and do not bend whatsoever even with hard gel removal. It's only been a week since the manicure and my nails are chipping because my natural nails were so damaged from coming here. I will not be coming back and I don't suggest anyone come here if you want anything more than a plain, basic manicure. read more

I want to like this tiny nail salon--it's tucked away on a side street in SoHo and seems very sweet--but I am not thrilled with the consistency of their service. The first time I went, I was treated to my choice of a hot and cold drink and my gel mani pedi was done with great care. The second and third times I've gone, the manicures felt rushed and my nails chipped within a few days. I choose this salon because I'm pregnant and I was looking up articles that recommended this salon because they use Zoya nail polish and the service is great. Everything was going great until my manicure. Because I'm pregnant and covid, its important that everything is clean and sterilized. After cleaning my nails during the manicure, the manicurist used the same towel that my hands were sitting on while she was cleaning it to wipe my nails. She proceeded to then lotion my hands. Every other salon would get a hot towel or a new towel. I don't think it's sanitary to use the same towel that my hands were on while you're cleaning my nails on. Then the worst part of this is when I went to tip. I paid card even though they ask for cash or Venmo because I didn't have either. I tipped her $5 which I feel like now I shouldn't have tipped shit excuse my language. Here's why... the woman who was checking me out laughed when I tipped. I said is everything ok? She keeps looking at the tip amount and is laughing and is like "I guess." I walked out gracefully even though I should've told them about themselves. This is extremely rude. She also completely invalidated my personal experience, for which she was not even present for. I understand people getting defensive about their business because it's their own, but once you start correcting unhappy customers one by one and telling them why they are wrong, that business will only go so far. Furthermore, this natural nail polish is low quality as many others have stated in their reviews. Mine started to look bad and it started cracking and chipping a few days in. The gel manicure is quite pricey ($48 + $10 charge for gel removal), but for the past 4+ times I've been, I've had amazing results. The nail salon is decorated well and very soothing. The technicians definitely pay a lot of attention, and I've always loved the results. I've always called to make an appointment, and they've always been very accommodating. However, this last time I went was quite a let down. I got a beige neutral color, but the paint was sheer, even after 3 coats. It was also applied unevenly, where I can see the different layers where some are thicker in some places than others. Plus, the polish application left a weird gap near my cuticle area, where I could still see my natural nail (making the polish look like it had grown out a bit, even though I had just got it done that day). I also brought my friend, telling her this was my favorite nail salon in the city, for her regular manicure to smudge + chip by the next morning. read more

Probably the worst mani I've ever had. Where to begin... I chose a pale pink with glitter on top and the tech made the polish so thick it was horrible and the pointer finger had to be redone 5times. After I left I had to return a few hours later bc it still hadn't dried and I scuffed my nail when I went back they were fine with it. But the biggest problem is their lighting. It's so dark u can tell what the colors really look like unless u go outside So she redid my nail with a nude and silver sparkle which turned the nail like a blue tone instead of the original colors I had. So I had a mismatched nail. Oh well that wasn't the problem. The biggest problem was that after all that they chipped the next day. My toes aren't as bad but the tips of the big toe are starting to slowly make their way out. I had them done Wednesday it's now Sunday. By Thursday my fingers were chipping by Saturday I just took off the polish. $60 for happy hour isn't worth more than an $8 mani. While the pedicure itself was fine and done with Zoya polish as expected, the experience was disappointing. This place is small and they are often busy. The tight pedicure station (enough for max 3 people at a time) was a rigid bench with pillows that looked as if they'd seen better days. The woman at the desk was cold and kept wandering away with her phone. The staff looked miserable. Barely soaked for a minute and everything seemed rushed. A fraction of time was spent on callus removal, lotion etc. compared to other SoHo salons. Tech asked if It would be OK if to only file nails (agreed) but was aggressive with the clippers. Went to the drying station and it was like they forgot about me. No setup, no back rub, no magazines/drinks (looks like the tea people raved about being offered here is long gone), no checking on polish dryness, no finishing oil etc. The technician never came over again. Staff didn't even bring over a bill. After waiting for ages had to unravel the paper between my toes and remove myself. Got up and walked over to find an employee to ask if I could pay. The posted prices are for cash only and it's not very clear (looked like the special package prices were cash only). If you want to pay by credit card the prices for all services posted are higher. ~$60 for a basic pedicure not including the tip. Woman at the desk (not the tech) pushed for cash for service and tip. I've had much better service (quality and hospitality-wise) at places significantly less expensive in the neighborhood. The comment she made was that designs like this is a waste of her time, in Chinese. I fought the urge to speak in Chinese while I was there. Those who work in front of customers should really be careful of what they say because you never know if they understand the language. I have been writing Yelp reviews for quite some time now, and this is one of the kinds that really leave me all sorts of conflicted. Up until the last few minutes of my manicure I was ready to give A6 Nail either a 4 or 4.5 star rating, but then events took a turn that, while not egregious, was enough to knock the review down to 3 stars. A manicure, you see, is not a good place for surprises. A6 Nail is nestled in one of the calmer streets off Houston and part of the reason I went to it was the out of the way location. Mobs of tourists were invading lower Manhattan and if I had to put up with ONE more slow walking group of people fanning out to block an entire sidewalk... *Ahem* A6 Nail is absolutely gorgeous. These folks did not just slap a fresh coat of paint on some brick and call it a day. The front has beautiful wood shelves with plants on them. Their lamps are whimsically covered with silver cans at the end. The coat hooks are actually pipe fixtures mounted on a wood panel. The downstairs area has a *wall of flowers* for selfie and photo ops. It is a modern and attractive business that draws the eye. Everything started well enough. I did not have to wait for a manicure so I sat right down. I was offered a drink but politely declined. And so my technician went to work. No chit chat, barely a hello - but hey, this isn't my first rodeo. I've had nail technicians who were chatty and others who were very shy. It's no big deal. What mattered is how she worked, and she was good. When she was working on my cuticles, she knew just the right amount of strength to apply. Her technique was quick, efficient but she didn't rush (that usually leads to cuts). I was grateful for this. Towards the end of the manicure, something felt "off". I realized that she was getting up and putting her stuff away but she had not yet done the step where they wrap cotton around a stick and disinfect the areas around your fingernails. The cotton was right there on the table, but it had not been utilized. I thought this might be a stylistic choice (even though literally almost every other manicure I've ever had included this step). So I waited for her to come back with the hot towels and was about to put my hands together expectantly when she said "All done!" and looked at me like I should leave. "What about the hot towel?" I asked. What followed was a strained explanation that the hot towel machine either did not exist or was broken (I honestly was not sure which). She handed me a folded up Bounty towel and told me that was just as good. I wiped my hands and decided to wash them thoroughly in the bathroom downstairs. Then came time to pay, and my manicure came out to $25 before tax! Now, keep in mind, I'm getting the basics here. Cut, trim cuticles, trim skin around the edges on the fingers, lotion, buff and done. I did not have any gloss or color applied. I can honestly tell you outside of a spa I went to once in LA, this was the most expensive manicure I've ever had. There is literally a place about four blocks away that charged me about $10 less last year. This was the last straw and even as I paid, I thought to myself "This was a 4* experience up until the last few minutes." I did not see any price list up on the walls (I could have missed it) so if you go to A6, I *highly* recommend you get a detailed breakdown of what you are paying for. Just be aware it will likely be higher than you might expect. There is nothing particularly wrong with A6, but I honestly felt like I overpaid for a service that fell short of my expectations. read more

Their soft gel is so gentle that your nails aren't stripped every time you change colors. The place is clean with a great peaceful aesthetic, gorgeous plants, lovely jazz music and kind staff.
