After a couple years of lockdown, I recently got a manicure at another place in Manhattan and I confess it was rather disappointing. However, while rolling through the West Village I had a vague memory that at one time I had a manicure at J and Z (or perhaps a shop that was in the same location previously) so I decided to give it a shot. I find whenever I walk into a salon for a manicure the reaction of the staff really dictates the rest of the experience. I find if the staff is indifferent or even slightly annoyed when I enter, it's generally a pretty sub-standard experience. If, on the other hand, they are smiles and welcoming of my business then it's generally a good to great experience. I am happy to say this experience fit into the latter category. Within minutes of entering I was seated and my manicure had begun. Having had many over the years I am pretty familiar with the procedure and I can tell when the person is rushing or moving just at the right pace. I am happy to report this manicure moved just at the right speed (too fast and I've gotten cuts before from overzealous cutting). The manicurist made light conversation at just the right amount to engage me without seeming overwhelming (I consider this a skill). I was very happy with the results of the manicure, which was mostly to cut my nails short and clean up cuticles etc. I added a buff at the end (hey, it's a bit of vanity, why not?) and everything came out great. I decided to tack on a 20 minute chair massage as my neck had been sore recently and I had a weird knot in my back. My manicurist did the massage and she did a great job. It was good enough that I honestly fell asleep during the process! I had a great experience here and look forward to my next visit. read more

Walked in here during my lunch hour to get a mani/pedi, risky move considering the time but the ladies here moved with great efficiency. On top of that they did really great work with my hands and feet. Only downside is that they don't do much nail art designs. The studio is also beautiful and very clean. All in all if you're in the area and need a quick, this spot will take care of you! read more

I loved J and Z nails, however I just went for a simple eyebrow wax and they completely waxed off one half of my eyebrow. She didn't tell me until the end, and there is absolutely no excuse. It's gone. I now have to figure out how to fix this, and only hope that they grow back. Do not go here. read more

Ouch. My fingers stinG from all the little cuts on my cuticle. What just happened to me? Whoever did my nails did not know what they were doing. And they looked sooo bad. Like almost laughable bad. Someone else offered to fix them, and they did. Still mediocre and in pain. almost 3 hours at the salon. I literally Had to pull my hand away from this woman almost cutting the skin when she was clipping my dipped nail extensions . She then literally cut all my cuticles till I bled. Every single finger has tiny teaRs at the top of the nail bed. think she might've been blind or something. This pains me writinG this - you guys seem like nice people . But the person who did my nails was obviously new and not ready to be touching fingers. This was a traumatizing experience. I'm not saying everyone is like this, and I appreciate someone fixing them. Just call me Beyonce because I love JZ! I have been an every 2-3 week gel manicure girl for the last five years (totally avoiding calculating what I have spent monetary wise on these paws...) I recently moved to the Village and everything seems to be too pricey to go to regularly. Now, J & Z is not the cheapest place in the city (I think it's 39.95 for a gel mani with tax included) BUT my gel lasts 3+ weeks here. I am a nurse and wash my hands a million times a day/use hand sanitizer regularly which usually leaves my gel chipping pretty early on. They also include a a quick back massage and they have a ton of colors to choose from. I usually go Saturdays around noon and there is never a wait then. Have also had a pedi there and have yet to be disappointed :] read more

I got a pedicure but enjoyed my experience. They were very kind and helpful. For your pedicure, you can choose between Lavender and Green Tea for soaking your feet, scrub, and lotion. They also have a heel thing included It is on the pricier side (~$30 for a pedicure) but the customer service was great. I'll probably look for some cheaper options in the future but I'll most likely come back when I don't feel like leaving the area read more

Very friendly! Probably one of the most friendly nail salons I've been to. They let me eat and enjoy myself. They include the heel gel treatment which not a lot of salons do for the same price! I've gotten pedicures here twice. You can choose between green tea and lavender for your pedicure. Customer service here is CONSISTENT which isn't typical of most places. Consistently friendly and warm. This is my new go-to place in the city! read more

Absolutely do not come here for a powder/dip manicure. One of my nails chipped 4 hours after I got the manicure and I had to go back the next day to have it fixed. Then, one day later, 2 more nails chipped off almost entirely and I had to go back. They were very nice about fixing it but when I asked for a coupon due to the inconvenience/issues they told me I was lucky they weren't charging me to fix the chips. I have gotten SNS manicures for years but this is my first time getting one here - I will absolutely not be coming back. read more

I went to J &Z nails during my lunch break. I decided to go for an off white/beige color. When they were coloring, I noticed the color was bad as it was making bubbles and it looked a bit brown on some points. I told the lady and she agreed and Instead of removing the color, they got another to put on top of the 1st layer they were putting on. By day 2 this is how the color was, see picture. I went and spoke with them and they said they can't do anything cause time had passed. They did not apologize, nor acknowledge the mistake at any point. My off white nail polish ended up being brown and with lines as if I had placed them in mud. Her answer was "white gets dirty by by touching your hair!!!!! Really?? This was a great little salon! I was so surprised not to find it on Yelp. There's not really a door person so I just kind of wandered in. Some of the girls were shy, but not rude or reticent. Once I got sat down for my mani-pedi, it was a great experience. Everything was sterilized, my feet were soaked, massaged, painted, and there were hot towels and paragon wax applied to my heels. I got gel on my finger nails. The lady had a nice rhythm of painting and LED curing. My cuticles have never been neater. 10/10 going back - they have a punch card for that too. read more

She made me bleed then when it came time to put the lotion on she put it on and like held my hand like you would with your significant other. These are some of the nicest ladies and they do a wonderful job. Prices are good (just over 13 for a manicure and they ask you to pay before they paint, which I love), and I actually prefer the no-water method because it feels more sanitary. The ladies who work here are very nice, and my manicure was fine--not the best but certainly not the worst. The reason for the one star is the sign in the bathroom which read: "Please, throw toilet paper in the garbage pail. Please do not throw toilet paper in the in the toilet." I'm guessing this explains the foul smell in the bathroom. Surely this is a NYC health code violation of some sort. One must wonder about the cleanliness in other aspects of the business if the owner is willing to have toilet paper with excrement deposited in a trash can with no lid. read more

I had a really nice experience here tonight. I am going to a wedding and just needed a simple pedicure which came out to $30. The staff was friendly and it was a nice environment. What I really loved was that they made sure my toes wouldn't smudge when I put on my sneakers and put a little bag over my oiled toes! I am not sure I would go here for something elaborate, but if you need a simple pedicure and are tight on time (open til 9!) this is is a great place! read more

Went with a friend for two gel manicures. They charge $38 instead of more typical $30 for gel. Manicure was good but shoulder massage was terrible. Paid $90 with tip and the two manicurists complained I had not tipped enough, insisted that I tip more. Will not return. read more

The people who worked here were really friendly! My manicure pedicure was simply ok though - nails weren't shaped evenly, there was still some dry skin around the cuticles, and the exfoliation wasn't thorough. NEVER get your gel nail removed from here!! I went to go get a gel nail art removed that I had gotten done from South Korea. As strong as the gel was since it was from Asia, I do agree that it must have been hard to remove. HOWEVER. they drilled all the way down to my real nail and buffed out my nails WAY too much that my nail felt like it was BURNING. My nails became so weak that it started to BREAK. This has NEVER happened in my life before. To let my nails heal better and breathe better, I removed the manicure that I had gotten from this place, only to see my nails all SCRATCHED up with very HARSH lines. It was to a point that a layer of my nail was being lifted and I couldn't remove the nail posh that was in the gaps of the scratches. My nails became weak to the point that it gets BENT when I slightly put pressure on it, which hurts and is very uncomfortable. I don't even know how this can be fixed. I had to cut off so much of my nails to a degree it feels too short. The service was quick so I initially thought they were good. BUT. by the time I was done getting my nails and had to get them dried, they didn't give me ANY instructions with what to do with the drying machine and didn't tell me that I was finished either. I myself had to constantly check if it was dry. I had to awkwardly stand up and walk out with NOBODY saying a proper thank you or goodbye. The service is great, everyone is attentive and sweet! They treat their customers very well. Along with that, the setup was very clean and it is overall a beautiful nail salon. I just had a few problems. First off, the prices were ridiculous. I got "acrylics" which they call SMS there and it was over $70 (including tip). I have never paid that much for just a manicure with dip and tips. I'm used to paying $50 at most at other salons. Another thing was that they weren't very careful with your cuticles. They just kept cutting mine down and eventually they made two of my fingers bleed when I was sitting down with them. It's been two days later, and one of my fingers is still bleeding because the skin is so tender in that area from being cut. They also didn't perfect the shaping of my nails. I wanted pointy tips and, on some of the nails, it's very uneven and it just doesn't look good when you look at it up close. When it comes to the nail polish, it's not chunky. Very smooth. However, they did not cover the entire nail. I just got them done and it looks like they're already growing out since they didn't go further down on the nail (along the cuticle). A good thing, though, about this nail salon is that they have a loyalty card where, after you get a certain amount of manicures, you get one free. read more

I got my nails done here today and the woman who did my nails was beyond rude the entire time. I walked in and said I wanted a polish change and barely spoke other than that. I was drying my nails for about 10 minutes and noticed she was staring me down. She proceeded to say "too long, get up." Would never go back. I would give them a negative 5 if I could. My college daughter visited the salon on 4/25/2019, after having her nails done she proceeded to pay for her service and included a tip. The girl that did her nails then screamed at her in front of other customers in the salon because she wasn't satisfied with the tip she received. Since when is someone entitled to a specific amount in tip?? A tip is completely discretionary and an extra bonus for services that have been paid for. How dare she humiliate a customer, especially a student, because she did not feel her tip was enough? Horrible customer service!!! read more

Not the greatest. They charged about $14 for regular manicure, and they did not have your hands soaked in a warm bowl of water. And said they have a cream that they put on and then have you wear a glove for a few moments. I felt it was rushed, and the girl did not cut the nails all evenly. Overall they were nice and they had friendly customer service. But it was way overpriced for other places with better service and the city. I would look around further.
