Trying to order online from retailers is cost prohibitive without being able to really see the items first. Visiting Mountain Gems made my trip entirely worth it. I got some great deals on beautiful material and spent over an hour talking rocks with two great guys. They have a good selection of cabochons and faceted gems in really cool carousel display cases. I saw some things I've only ever seen online and learned about some material from BC. Unfortunately, I'm not an experienced enough metalsmith to justify buying some of the cabs I really wanted, but it's definitely on my list when I visit in the future. As an amateur lapidarist, I was ecstatic to look through their shelf of slabs. I bought probably an unhealthy amount, but hey, I need to transport it across the Pacific Ocean. I might as well make it worth it. They walked me through some of the things I picked out and showed me some things I missed that I ended up loving too. Plus they wrapped everything neatly because it was going to be travelling. The staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgable. Guys, if you're reading this, sorry, I completely forgot to get your names. I really appreciated the time you took to talk about everything I was interested in seeing and giving me pointers and ideas on the slabs I bought. It was really the highlight of my trip and I will be back when I visit in the future. Unfortunately, I didn't plan my visit to the shop ahead, or I would have tried to take a class too. Short version: I was able to get a custom made ring at significant savings. The ring was exactly what my fiance wanted. I received it in a timely (and personable) manner. She loved it. And, I had the ring independently assessed and it was assessed for significantly more than I paid for it! Long version: 1) Initial contact: I contacted Pierre by e-mail with a general idea of what I was looking for. He called me and we chatted so that he could get all the particulars. And, I exchanged some photographs of what I (she) wanted the ring to look like. 2) Pierre got back to me in days with a price for the construction of the ring, an anticipated timeline from the date I requested he begin and a total of three potential diamonds that fit within my price range. I admit that the diamonds didn't speak to me and asked him he could source a few others. He got back to me within a day with 2 more diamonds and one of them was exactly what we were looking for. 3) Initial Meeting: For me, all of our correspondence had been via e-mail, text, and phone. If I am going to be shelling out some significant cash for a ring that my fiance was rather particular, I wanted to meet the guy and see the shop. I work long hours and he agreed to stay late on a Friday night to help out (and his wife called to inquire where he was in during our meeting.. so I know he had better things to do!). That's service. He showed me the diamond he had and a mock-up of the ring based on a previous model he had made, explained the next step of wedding bands and how they could be incorporated (never thought of that!), and repeated the timeline. Deposit comfortably provided. 4) Picking up the ring. I was ecstatic. There's always a bit of pressure on the guy selecting the ring when the better half is not there to give explicit instructions (although to me she had been very clear.. so clear I better not screw it up when giving him the instructions!). But, the ring was perfect and exactly as envisioned and planned. At least when it came to the proposal, I knew the ring wouldn't be a complaint. ;) 5) Post-proposal: My fiance and I returned to get the ring sized and leave it (she was heartbroken as she just received it and didn't want to give it back). But, Pierre was quick with his turn-around and helped mitigating the situation by showing her how the wedding band could match-up. I have subsequently picked up the ring. It is back on her finger. And, we'll be back for our bands.

Golden Hands came in clutch for my fiancée and I. They were able to resize her ring in less than…read more24hrs, which was perfect because we had a flight to catch the evening of the day they gave the ring back to us. We didn't even make an appointment, we just walked in one afternoon and dropped off the ring, then they contacted me the next day saying it was finished. And their pricing is very reasonable too I felt like. Getting there is a bit tricky. They're located inside a very nondescript building that almost looks abandoned. You have to use the calling pad outside the main doors (which look very unwelcoming) to scroll through the businesses and find Golden Hands and call them. Then they'll unlock the doors for you. Once you enter, keep walking straight, don't go in the elevator or stair well. There is a door at the end of the hall that totally looks like an "employees only" sort of door. But surprisingly it is unlocked. Just open it, and then keep going down that hallway. Golden Hands is the last door on the left.

First Nations artwork reproduced and applied to hundreds of everyday items make this a great gift stop for tourists to the Island. I picked up a gift for my niece or nephew. The salesperson was very helpful when I mentioned I was looking for a gift. From the website I learned this is a Native - owned shop opened in 1987. In fact the owner is a relative of Chief Wickaninnish! They also work with artists and are able to assist customers with ordering custom made items. I also thought this was an interesting tidbit: "The Wickaninnish Gallery is named after a powerful First Nations chief, Chief Wickaninnish of the Tla-o-qui-aht People from Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island. The name Wickaninnish translates to "having no one in front of him in the canoe". During the time of European contact, Chief Wickaninnish was a highly revered leader and was very influential in the fur trade." There is no shortage of NW Coast art in Vancouver, but this little gallery is affordable, Native - owned, and carries some nice pieces. May you have no one in front of you in the canoe!
