They offered an alternative adjustment I didn't even know was possible, suggested more cost-effective options, and even tightened my prongs at no extra charge. My ring was ready within just a couple of business days and looked absolutely gorgeous when I picked it up. The staff was so warm, friendly, and genuinely made me feel comfortable and cared for. When I came in, an employee approached and asked if I was interested in see some products. After a bit of a walk around the store I was approached by a man with a gold chain and 2 big ring that said "DIAMOND KING". I later learned that he was the owner. He asked if I was looking for a ring for my babe. I replied no. Then he kept asking profoundly "WHY, WHY, WHY" many times over, loudly, after my answers. He was very pushy and really mean with me. I told him I was just looking around. Then him told me that his cameras were watch me, and that I was making him very nervous. As if I was going to steal something from his store!! We went in to get my wife's engagement ring resized and were greeted by a very loud man wearing a gold chain and two giant diamond rings, one of which read "DIAMOND KING". I'm assuming this was the owner. We inquired about getting her engagement ring sized up to match the wedding band because it was too tight. He asked if we would like to have them joined together and we declined. Sometimes when we travel, it's nice to be able to just wear the band and not look too flashy. He said if we ever wanted to join them, we would need both rings resized again. We declined again, having already talked it over prior. Then he had the audacity to say "Well, if you just wear one ring or the other it looks like you're trying not to look married." He said this loudly with other customers in the store so everyone would hear. We were both shocked that he would suggest that not fusing the rings is a sign that a wife wants to be unfaithful. Again, I firmly told him I disagree and we already made a decision. FYI, it was about $110 to resize the one ring. It would be $110+110+60ish if he got us to resize both and fuse them. This sleazy man is willing to try to embarrass you, insult you and your wife for some extra money. When we came back to pick up the ring which was ready the same day (only positive thing about this experience) he "apologized" for pressuring us to fuse the rings. Then he repeated AGAIN "It's just that when you wear only one of the rings, it just says to everyone that you don't want to look married." Absolute clown of a salesman. Was looking for a replacement for the diamond in my wife's wedding ring that was lost several years ago. After looking at a couple of the chain stores in the mall, I wanted to check with Borthwick's, mainly because I live in Ferndale, they are local, and I have heard good things. The chain stores tried to upsell me, and would have had to order the stone, and send the ring out for setting. The salesperson at Borthwick's was very friendly and helpful, and showed me a couple options that were in stock in the store in the price range I was looking for. She said it would take up to a week for the fitting, and would be done in house. I left to think about it for a little while, then came back and was able to negotiate the price down a little more on the diamond I wanted. I made the deal, put down half the cost for deposit, and was told it could take up to a week if any changes needed to be made in the setting. Three hours later I got a call and they said it was already done and I could pick it up when I was ready! I went back, picked it up along with an appraisal. The ring looks like new. They advised that we bring it back every six months or so for cleaning and inspection at no charge. I gave the ring with the new diamond to my wife on out 30th anniversary. She was very pleased at the selection I made on the stone, so I'm happy. :) read more

To call Borthwick Jewelry a pawn shop is an insult to pawn shops. My fiancé and I needed to have an appraisal done on our engagement ring to have it added to our homeowner's insurance policy. Currently, my fiancé and I still can't figure out what they were thinking. We don't know if they thought we were there to sell the ring (we are there for an insurance appraisal), but what occurred next was either a sign of their complete incompetence as jewelers or as crooks. The "appraisal" they gave us stated that the diamond on the setting was fake... That my fiancé's brand new engagement ring was worth 1/8th of what it should be (great experience for a newly engaged woman). It was only after I told them that I've already had the diamond appraised and GIA certified did they recant their statement. "Oh, well, we can't appraise diamonds of that quality." Borthwick's Jewelry can't tell the difference between real and fake diamonds. We honestly thought they had switched out our diamond for a fake one. They admitted they don't own a microscope, can't see inclusions on a diamond, and appraised my stone's quality on a visual heat test by "torching" it to see the color. Wtf? So, not only can they not determine a stone's quality, real from fake, or use any method deemed appropriate for diamond appraisal, they can't do insurance appraisals. Every measurement they did was inaccurate, and the final page they gave us lacked any information an insurance company would need to insure an item. I have now had the pleasure of going to two additional jewelers to ensure Borthwick's didn't do anything "criminal" to our ring. I have intentionally waited four days to leave a review so the owner could call me; we left a message for him to do so. Thank you Borthwick's for a truly unforgettable experience. P.s. Watching them backpedal at 100mph once they realized we were educated was the only enjoyable part of this circus. read more

When I look at the shop when I'm driving out of town, I feel bile rising. The owner clearly took advantage of the fact I didn't know the price of gold per oz when I sold him a 24 carat gold bracelet weighing multiple oz. He told me I was in luck, gold prices had just gone up, evidently so did his greed. I happened to come across gold prices a few days later, quite by accident. I quickly surmised he made at LEAST $2k profit off me (probably more like $3k) and I only made a tiny sliver of what he made. I trusted him to do a decent deal with me (we are in a small town, so you like to give people the benefit of the doubt...) and now I wouldn't trust him with the lint on my sweater. I went back in his store to switch out a watch battery but with the intention to bring up the bracelet. Conveniently he couldn't recall it OR me and said he didn't keep records of gold that he bought from customers!! Not keeping records on items such as that?! Rigghhhhhhhttt..... That's when I realized precisely what kind of person I was dealing with. I will never step foot in his shop again and I've advised my local friends to follow suit. He has multiple signs around the area that state his business buys gold. All I can say is "buyer beware". I gave him 1 star but only bc the system requires I choose at least 1. I only give 1 star because you have to give a rating! Where to begin? When my husband and I got married we purchased a wedding ring and band from a private individual years ago, I took the ring in to have it appraised for safe purchase, the owner appraised it to be real diamonds and gold. As I was going through my records of insurance I realized I needed to have current appraisals on my rings so last year I went to borthwick to have my wedding ring appraised again, and at that time I found a very expensive diamond band they had and was sold on purchasing it! Because I was buying more jewelry from him he exclaimed that my wedding band appraisal would not cost anything, which I was very pleased with. Last month my insurance company notified me that they did not have an appraisal on my wedding band! So I called borthwick and asked if he could email me a copy of the appraisal, as I couldn't find my copy. The owner began to tell me that they have never done an appraisal for me for that ring? I told him that over the last 10 years he has done 2 appraisals for me on that exact ring! After much conversation the owner told me to bring it in and he would do another appraisal for insuranc purposes, so I did! I received a call days later from one of the employees who stated to me that the appraisal was ready but it was $4,000 less than the previous year? I asked how could that be? She stated she would have the owner call me back! He did! He was extremely abrasive in his verbiage "so, not happy with my number"? and stated they had never done an appraisal for me for that ring and that I'm a liar! He said I was trying to make him lie about the value of the ring and he wouldn't do that! I told him I would never want him to do that and I was trying to ask him why the value would drop so much in 1 year? He again stated he never did an appraisal for that ring! And hung up on me! Believe me I was going to find last years appraisal no matter what! Today, I found it! I took it to the store and politely asked if I could talk to him and the employee that did last years appraisal, he agreed! When I showed him last years appraisal he stated that I talked him into lying about how much the ring was worth so I could get more insurance for it! I was appalled! Knowing that he was in the wrong, I reminded him of his accusations of "never doing an appraisal"!, he screamed at me! I have never really seen anyone "froth" at the mouth, but this man did! I could tell the employees hiding behind him were very disturbed by his behavior! Honestly it was insane! I cannot believe how he "screamed" at me! The owner of this place is rude and arrogant. I went to have my ring sized that I had just received as a gift from my husband. I asked the very friendly and helpful lady if there was a way to adjust the prongs as they stuck out too much and poke my fingers. The owners piped in and said "no they don't...you're just not used to wearing it." I told him that my husband had bought me a ring previously from them and it does the same thing and I never wear it. He argued and insisted that I just need to wear it and that it does not stick out too much. The other staff tried to be helpful and suggest a different setting and he told them not to do that because "she won't like it and will complain about that too" and then he would be stuck with two rings! I showed the lady another ring I had (not purchased from them) that the prongs didn't stick out and was comfortable to wear and asked if the new ring could be like that. The owner walked by and saw me holding the ring and said "let me see that" he took my ring and said: "there's nothing wrong with the prongs and they DONT STICK OUT". I looked at him and said ..."I know....because that's MY ring that I DIDNT get here...NOT the new one." He stormed off...probably because he was embarrassed that he just made a fool of himself. This guy was a total jerk and rude and needs some major lessons in customer service. I appreciated the staff that listened and tried there best to hear what I needed...the owner jumped in and interrupted every chance he got and made it unpleasant. A thoughtful gift from my husband turned into a horrible day and left me feeling like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when she got treated like crap at a boutique. Never again... I have taken my wedding ring set in a couple of times to have prongs examined after hearing from the original seller that I had loose stones. The first time, Borthwick said "no, your settings are fine" and polished the ring (all for free); the second time they did find broken prongs and fixed those for a very reasonable price. I also had them rhodium plate my white gold anniversary band, and when I took it back in for the second plating they also plated my platinum wedding ring set so they were both shiny and sparkly (and didn't charge me for the wedding set plating). Additionally, several years ago I purchased a white gold necklace with 3 different birth stones for my mother-in-law (one for each of her kids), which she absolutely loves and has since added even more stones for all her grandkids. I got a very good price on the purchase and the sales staff was very nice. I definitely recommend them! read more

I would like to say that Tom and the gang at Borthwick Jewelry in Ferndale are the best jewelers and some of the most honest and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure to know! Once again they have surpassed my expectations of what good customer service can be! I bought my wife an anniversary ring and then took it back in a week later to have some bands put on it! I like spoiling my wife LOL! Anyway they did a great job getting it all soldered together but unfortunately with it being rose gold and super soft it just wasn't up to there standards or ours and we all agreed. They did everything they could plus more to make me and especially my wife happy with another option, which is what she wanted originally anyway I just couldn't afford it and my buddy Tom made it happen!! all I can say is that I couldn't be happier with the end resolution and result! Happy Wife is a Happy life right? LOL :) If you dont like honest opinions and real customer service with genuine people that you wouldn't mind seeing outside of there place of business, then this might not be the place for you. They dont try to sell you the most expensive thing under the glass like the mall stores do! First of all, I would really like to tell you that I had a great experience with this place, but unfortunately, it has been the complete opposite. When I was looking for a jeweler for my girlfriends engagement ring, this place came highly recommended so I just went with it. I had a nice experience with the owner purchasing the ring, but what I didn't know what was to come in the future, was not so nice. I really felt like I examined this ring in the store, but it was my very purchase, & was relying on the owner for his professional opinions. I had weeks with the ring after purchase before presenting it to my girlfriend, so I'd look very closely at it & I started to find little flaws everywhere. Not with the stone(diamond) itself, but the ring & setting. The stone is a princess cut & the prongs holding it were messy & out of square to the ring. The band was also not a perfect circle like it should have been, but more like a circle with an ever so slight eggshell shape to it. These things bothered me for quite some time, but there was not enough time to mention it to the owner before presenting it to my girlfriend. So...my fiance & I went back to see him a month later to resize & reshape the band, & also have the mounting fixed, which he agreed definitely needed it. If that was the case, why sell something like that in the first place?! The ring came out looking great AFTER it was fixed, but not BEFORE I presented it like it should have been. The owner apologized & admitted that he sold me a sloppy looking ring, but it was because of the busy & hectic Christmas holiday schedule. ...what kind of a crazy crap excuse is that?! He was lucky we purchased the wedding bands there too, because I already had my fill. Trying my best to keep my patience, we hesitantly bought the wedding bands....but not all went so smoothly! Oh yes...there's more! I had chosen the style band that i liked, but it only came in a size that was slightly big for me. Since the metal is tungsten & cannot be resized, I was hesitant to go with it, but I finally did because there was so much emphasis from the owner, & I still was hoping to trust a professional opinion. I needed time to get used to my band so in the weeks that followed I kept close watch on how it felt to me. It felt exactly like it did in the store....slightly too loose. The ring slipped completely off of my finger TWICE, but luckily where it wasn't lost for good. This had put me over the top. We went into the store to explain the situation, & I was told that it was my fault for purchasing that size & also that I had to pay to get a replacement...which wouldn't even have been my original wedding band! The nerve. Unacceptable to me, I wouldn't accept that answer & after minutes of debate, he finally did what he should have...found an exact match to replace, or in this case, supplement the original. I commended the owner for doing what was right. The new ring had to be ordered so after a couple weeks wait, my wife picked up the new rings! Yes...he brought two exact replacements for me in different sizes...how nice!! One of the sizes is the exact same that is already slightly too big for me, & the other one must have skipped a size on the way down, because that one won't even fit on my finger! Oh & wait...yes, there's more!..These new bands were not an exact match. Appearance wise...very very close. Quality wise...absolutely not!! I will not step another foot into that store, & I couldn't possibly recommend that anyone else do the same. I'm left with a ring that is too big for me, but luckily my wife's was finally fixed to satisfaction. I feel that my two star rating is very generous in this case. ***UPDATE... I've now lost my ring due to it being too large. This guy is only interested in making a sale. I could never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I recently won a ring from Borthwick Jewelers in a local contest. It really wasn't my style so I took it to a few very reputable jewelers in Bellingham to see if I could sell it. Borthwick had listed it as 14k gold, but in truth it is 10k gold with single cut diamonds and a very poor quality gem. While I am paying taxes on $799 (what Borthwick said it was worth), it is actually only worth about $200. I asked Borthwick about this and all I got was lies. This whole experience made me extremely wary of doing any business with them. If you are a customer here, I highly recommend taking any pieces you have purchased to another jeweler for an appraisal, and to make sure you didn't get scammed! read more
