They care about the guest experience as much as I do, and they're insanely responsive. I'm on the message threads with guests, so I see how they handle things in real time. Professional, calm, patient, and never reactive, even when guests are being... let's just say "creative." One thing they said early on when we onboarded really stuck with me. They told me they intentionally say "our home" when talking to guests because they want guests to feel like they're staying with people who are personally invested in their experience, not some faceless management company. And honestly, it works. You can see it in the reviews. Guests constantly mention Natalie by name because they remember her. That says a lot. People don't remember automated customer service. They remember when someone genuinely takes care of them, and she really does. They've also helped me navigate permitting, operational stuff, and all the random homeowner stress that comes with having a rental in Arrowhead. Every time I call, they answer. Every question gets handled. I trust them completely, which is not a sentence I say lightly. And yes, I initially had the same thought everyone has: "Do I really want to pay a management fee?" After working with them, absolutely yes. Worth every penny. The biggest thing they gave me was peace of mind. I don't spend my life thinking about the house anymore. They also market properties on their own website, which brings in bookings we wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I basically see those as bonus bookings. There were a number of small holes in the walls where art or shelves once upon a time. It wasn't spotlessly clean either; dust and some sort of gritty film covered the bathtub surround. It was advertised as a non-smoking room, but the smell of stale tobacco permeated the walls. The bed was okay...the sheets were clean, but the mattress was a bit spongy for my taste. There is a two-story much more modern motel building on the property, and it might be better; but I'll never know. I won't chance it again.

The manager could see this and then moved me to Room 8 and it looked more modern and cleaner at a glance. Well, when I wiped the remote control, light switch plates, counters, it was disgusting. The floor too. I went back down to the office and showed the wipes to the manager and he said he'd have it cleaned again. The cleaning lady had an attitude with me, so who knows if she cleaned the floors again or not. I don't have anywhere else to stay, so will be stuck here yet shortening my trip by a day. One good thing is that I'm walking distance to restaurants and the lake for hiking. I won't be back.

It was to culminate with going to Oak Knoll Lodge, our family's traditional vacation spot when we grew up. We used to spend a week there swimming in the pool with a slide, playing shuffleboard, horseshoes, ping pong and going into town for some shopping and hiking. We booked the entire lodge for 3 nights including one night free for booking 2 nights. We were excited to experience the Oak Knoll Lodge with our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I should have known there was a problem when I tried to confirm the booking a month in advance and the phone number on the website was not answered with no mailbox having been set up. After many attempts I finally got thru to someone who was representing the new owner. They told me our reservation was there, but only for 2 nights so I added the 3rd night for an increased cost. I paid over $5,000 for the 50% deposit. On the day of arrival some of my family members got there early but could not check in without me or my brother being there. Then my daughter called to tell me the pool was empty and there was nobody in the lodge, just a sign to call a different lodge to check in at. I was upset, because with the temperatures topping at 80 degrees the pool was essential for a good time. I called the phone number, and the representative could not give me any information other than the pool was not available. She refused to give me the name or number of the owner and only the first name of the manager, no number to call. She did have the manager call me and then he had the owner call me who said the pool had an issue 3 days ago. I asked why I wasn't told about this, and he said it wasn't his fault it was not working. He then wouldn't let my people check in without us first making payment in full. I eventually got him to let my people check in and he agreed to give me a 25% discount and the use of another pool at another lodge. When my family finally checked in, there were no amenities. No shuffleboard, no horseshoes, no pool and the only ping pong table was in the office that had nobody working there. Many of the cabins were dirty without working stoves, microwaves or refrigerators. There were even mouse droppings in the beds, bowls and flooring. Some of the cabins were missing bedding, pillows, utensils... Because of the missing amenities, unsanitary condition and poor maintenance of the cabins we refused to pay the balance of what we owed and the owner, Ken, then refused to let us use the ping pong table or main lodge area during our stay. The pool he promised to let us use at a lodge over a mile away was small, no slide, dirty, seating for only 5 people and no water in it. The pool at Oak Knoll Lodge, we later found out, had not been used or working for a long time. When I told Ken about all the problems and our unwillingness to pay the balance, I never heard back from him, the manager or the check in person although someone did send a person to clean the rat droppings. We ended up having to pay an extra $4,000 to give my family other activities to do which included the Alpine Slide entertainment area and the Lodge at Big Bear with a working pool that would keep them cool and have fun to finish what was supposed to be our first ever epic reunion. The reunion ended up great no thanks to the poorly managed and laughably inadequate accommodations at the Oak Knoll Lodge. If you decide to go there, you best check it out first as it was clearly not what was represented on the website.

We called after booking to confirm reservation and make a request to be placed near each other. I called the evening before our stay, again, to request the rooms be situated near each other and was confirmed they had all 3 reservations (2 rooms on one reservation under my BIL and 1 room on a separate reservation under my husband). We make our 2hr drive up to Big Bear and upon checking-in (around 3pm), we're told they couldn't find either reservations! Here's the shady part: one of the female employee hears this, she steps in to take over. She proceeds to tell us that the reservations were not in their system, they have no means of altering the system therefore it couldn't inadvertently be cancelled, she was new but somehow gave the response that this has never happened before, and she continues to insist my husband and BIL contact their credit card and third party booking agency (in addition to Extra Holidays which has nothing to do with our reservation) to address the issue, despite us showing email proof of reservation and payment. No one more experienced or even a manager (who appeared to be standing behind this receptionist) stepped in to help this "new" worker. After about almost an hour of "there's nothing I could do on my end" excuses, and having had 3rd party booking confirmation, the receptionist confirmed that EVEN if we were to verify all of this, they had no rooms available for our party. Which was odd because we were early for check in. Later that day, my husband got on the phone with the 3rd party booking agency we used to get a refund, they called the hotel to confirm we didn't stay, and here's the UNETHICAL part: WorldMark confirmed with the agent that THEY CANCELLED our reservation!!! A quick Google search for reviews on this issue showed this has been a common practice of WorldMark. They over book rooms by up to 20% banking on cancellation. But if not, then they drop the paid reservations, often without any notice. This is completely shady and unethical greedy business practice. We were fortunate enough to only have a 2hr drive, but folks traveling from out of state or country would have had no other accommodations! Please be aware and DO NOT EVER BOOK WITH WORLDMARK. The employees know what's up and they do not care and will lie just to get you out of the way.

So, it was strange when this happened: After a really bad booking and check-in experience at Fleur De Lac European Inn, where the owner asked me to leave after wanting extra cash on top of existing booking, when I already paid via another booking website (**at check in, mind you)... walking in and talking with Karen, the owner/manager of 21 years, was a sweet relief from the chaotic energy from Fleur. Karen greeted me with respect, laughs, patience, and a room (#28) that was head and shoulders above anything Fleur was offering, and it was for a similar price. She and room 28 made me feel welcomed, and Karen made sure I had everything I needed, after a bad experience. I would go back just to talk with her, and her staff. Honorable mention is Michael, who was such a positive and humorous energy at the desk. The bartendress, forgive me for not catching her name, was wonderful and welcoming, as well. It's a shame they shut down the bar area around 9pm. It's a place you want to cozy up to, late into the night, and exchange stories well into the evening hours. I'll be back, and will stay there... hopefully sooner than later.
