We enjoyed our visit to Aago Indian/Nepalese Restaurant & Bar. The mango lassi was reasonably priced, the chilli momos were yummy and unique, and the garlic naan was warm and crispy. The curry was alright in terms of flavor, but it at least came with plenty of rice. We also appreciated the 10% military discount as a thoughtful show of support. Sophia and I had lunch here at this restaurant which serves Indian and Nepalese food. We've been here twice before which is honestly a shame. The past meals we've had here have been really good and friends of ours enjoyed their selections as well. This time it was just us. Would the third time bring great vibes like before? It was barely packed with people when we walked inside which was totally fine with us. We were seated immediately after walking in. The decor was spotless from the bar to the tables. Within minutes, we were ready to order. My selection was the half order of tandoori chicken at Level 2 spice flavor with garlic naan bread for the both of us and Strawberry lassi for the beverage. (Sophia had the chicken saag dish with Mango lassi.) Everything was truly delicious and well done. Both of us are fans of Indian food and neither one walked away disappointed. I'm a fan of tandoori chicken so this had to be chosen. There was enough rice, sauce and veggie mix to have yours truly full. The naan bread....say no more. The Strawberry lassi wasn't too sweet and full of flavor. Sophia enjoyed her dish as well. There was plenty to take with us for leftovers. A great afternoon for the both of us to have lunch. Aago is hands down my top choice for Indian cuisine. I've tried several other great spots including Nawab, Monsoon, and Amirtha Curry, and while they were all good, Aago stands out by far in flavor, consistency, and overall experience. Everything I've ordered here has been excellent, but my absolute favorites are the chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, and butter chicken. The flavors are rich, perfectly spiced, and always comforting. I also love their chow mein, tandoori chicken, and you can't miss with the garlic naan. Every dish is cooked with care and full of authentic flavor. I highly recommend Aago to anyone looking for consistently delicious Indian food. First this place is a hole in the wall which is already a plus for me. They give you a crispy piece of naan and three sauces very different in flavor. Onion. Tamarind and chimichurri. Very tasty and interesting My wife ordered a chicken spinach curry. Delicious with a medium spice level which was at the height of spice level. Very flavorful. I ordered the chicken vindaloo. At a medium which was again at the top level of heat. I can handle heat so I asked for a way to make it spicier and they brought me these green peppers. Oh yeah way over the top. But tasty. It was only my husband and myself: hard-to-please foodies. When the waitress tried to place us in the smallest table, I refused. I pointed at the 4 seaters table, the waitress objected my request. I insisted to sit in a bigger table (4 seaters). She objected again. By this time I was ready to tell my husband to fuck this and let's go to a different restaurant. The short plump waitress asked her boss and we got the 4 seater table. Finally! This immediately gave a bad taste in my mouth. Sure enough, she retaliated by giving me stink eyes the entire time we were dining there. I just responded with the same cold expression. Don't they know customer is king??? The heck! If we are one of those couples who each person order 1 dish and stuff our face with 2 varieties of dish only, she can sit us in the tiniest table. Again, the restaurant was half empty. Overall Rating: 4.5 but since I can't select 0.5 and the short plump curly haired waitress gave me the long face and the stink eye for the entire time dining , I give 4 as the overall rating. Chicken Vindaloo: 3.5 spicy level 5 Now the spicy level 5 for this one is not as spicy as I thought especially after tasting Chili MoMo at level 4. I was worried for nothing. The taste of the vindaloo is a bit too sour and not as balanced as some other Indian restaurants I had before, or when I was in India for work. Still good but not great. 5. Goan Fish Curry: 5 spicy level 4 Hum... I must say this is my most favorite one. First time trying a Goan dish and I do love this one! They used salmon. I went with the Okra because I haven't had okra in a while. I got it nice and mild. It was actually a pretty large portion to go along with the rice. This place is a little further away from the local 756 area but still worth to go try atleast once. They had a great variety of Indian and Nepalese food options, but was a little bit over priced for the portion size in my opinion. I also feel personally that I can get better food closer to the Ghent/Virginia Beach area and this place is definitely not the best Indian/Nepalese food I have had (but then again my standards for South Asian food are pretty high!). I will highly recommend their biryani though because the flavors were really good and if you ask they will make it spicy! I wish our waitress had expressed to us that it would be a wait as they were busy. I think a little explanation goes a long way! My husband did order a beer and didn't get it till 15 minutes after ordering it and asking our waitress. Food wise: The fried vegetable appetizer was okay. The spinach fritters were a little over fried. Also did not come with a sauce. TONS of filling, great dough, wonderful samosa. -Chicken makhani (butter chicken) - spice level 2 (perfect), absolutely delicious and not really spicy. Piping hot and ended up splitting into two meals. -Chicken hyderabadi - spice level 3 (good heat, a bit much for me who is bad with spice), star anise flavor, delicious but I didn't like the flavor as much as the makhanj -Basmati rice delicious and free to refill -Garlic naan - fresh, great scent and good garlic flavor -Mango lassi thick and sweet a bit rich -Strawberry lassi was more refreshing, tasted a lot of yogurt flavor The leftover dishes were even better at home. I'd heard great things about Aago. A friend that was in medical school and doing a rotation at Riverside Hospital went to eat at Aago a few times and found it to be the best Indian food he's ever had. Since hearing him say that, I've really wanted to make a visit myself. I always enjoy Indian food when I have it and I've been very impressed with other Indian restaurants in the area butt hadn't yet given Aago a try. My friends and I arrived around 7:30pm on a Saturday night and the place was packed. This was honestly a little surprising. One of the friends I visited with had been to Aago before and he wasn't highly impressed so I had one good and one not so good review to base my expectations from. Our wait before being seated was about 10-15 minutes which wasn't too bad. The place was clean and had enough space that dining tables weren't too close. Every table was filled with guest; some on dates, others with parents and children, and their long table sat a large group of women. There was some light music playing but not too loud at all. I felt an authenticity to the overall vibe of the place. In comparison to some other Indian restaurants in the area, I felt Aago was more traditional. The food and drinks were all great! We ordered lamb korma, goat curry, and lamb biryani. Additionally we ordered garlic naan, paratha, mango juice and mango lassi. We thoroughly enjoyed it all. The only thing we didn't enjoy so much was the complimentary papadum. It wasn't terrible, just didn't give any of us a desire to finish them. Finally, Darima our waitress was amazing!!! She was pleasant throughout the entire visit and seemed very comfortable talking to us. She shared that she was here for a short time on break from school in Kansas. I haven't been here in a while and some things have changed since then. They no longer offer the thali platters. I saw a buffet set up but there were no dishes there on a Saturday lunch hour. The menu seems larger than before, so that's a plus. Some things were really good and others were just ok. The wait staff was lackluster. The one waiter had all the tables and did host work. But, he wrote the order down and we were still missing an item. Luckily it wasn't one which takes long to make. The chili momos were really good. I like the red sauce, it reminded me of the Manchurian sauce. The inside of the momos was all veggies and delicious. my friend got the lentil soup and raved about it. I tried it and it was nice, great lentil flavors and it was blended super smooth. My friend got the paneer Tikka masala. It was straight up cream sauce and cheese, haha. I can't have dairy anymore but I tried a taste and didn't like it. But I think I just no longer have the taste for it. I tried a dish I hadn't tried before, the jafrezi. They made this for me without dairy in the sauce, it ended up tasting ok, but I won't be getting this again. There seemed to be too many onions and not enough sauce. They forgot the roti, but quickly made it after I told the waiter it was missing. A couple items between our table and the one next to ours were mis-delivered. Nothing we couldn't send back over to the other table and vice versa. Once is a mistake, but this happened with 3 items. I don't mind wait staff that's not super friendly, I get it. Being cheerful and small talk all day is exhausting. But the service just wasn't that great, with mistakes and long waits. Maybe because of the waiter, maybe because they had too many other tables. I'll miss the variety on the thali platters, it's one of my favorite things to order at Indian restaurants. So if I'm in the area, I will hit up Aago again, maybe it'll be a better day for staff and I'll pick something I like better on the menu read more

Heard high praise of this place from a friend from Nepal and it did not disappoint! When you first walk in, the aroma makes your mouth water instantly. The staff was friendly and attentive throughout our meal. They took extra care to make eye contact with my Spanish-speaking grandma while we translated for her, showing that they were speaking directly to her rather than through us which she really appreciated. We tried the chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, and curry chicken, all with a spiciness level of 1/5. My friend and I have been patronizing this establishment regularly for about a year. Today we both decided to step outside of our comfort zones and try some new offerings, as each of us has our own favorite dish there that we know will usually be prepared to perfection. Unfortunately, today that was not the case. I ordered the goat biryani with a mango lassie and garlic-cheese naan bread. The mango lassie was delicious. The garlic-cheese naan bread looked and smelled delicious - but it fell short on taste (maybe needed a sprinkle of salt‍). But what made my meal truly inedible on this visit was the fact that there were shards of bone mixed into the rice in my goat biryani. I understand that the meat itself will be on the bone, but in what world are sharp, quarter-inch shards of bone an acceptable accoutrement? Regarding the service at the establishment, I am already aware the service is minimal (even though the food is typically good). On this visit, I had to seek someone out for a water refill. When I had an issue with my food, I had to find someone to advise them because they did not check back a few minutes after the food was delivered. My issue was finally "resolved" (replacement chicken biryani) - yet our issues on this visit were not yet over. The server somehow charged the wrong card for the wrong ticket. We were each given our checks in the checkbook and inserted our cards into the respective sleeves. My friend was refunded the difference in cash, as she was overcharged. This is one of my favorite places to eat, and I'm very sad to have to leave any negative comments on a review for them. With Nawab not serving lunch since reopening from Covid, my friend and I were looking for local Indian cuisine at lunch time. Aago, across the street from Christopher Newport University was the answer. We got there about 1:45 and it seems they close at 3. This was enough time for us to have an enjoyable late lunch. The place is well appointed, definitely a place you could go for an upscale dining experience. There is a bar as well as 2 dining areas. We were seated at a small round table for two in the corner. The table got a bit crowded when our food arrived. The reasons for taking away a star comes right here at the start. I ordered lentil soup as an appetizer which I never got. They gave us each a bottle of water when we were seated. I ordered a masala iced tea that was on the menu, and I was told they do not do iced tea, only hot. If something is on the menu and you do not tell me when I enter what is not available, it irritates me. So I asked for the hot tea and a glass of ice. Apparently they do not do glasses at all. My hot tea came in a small mug. It had milk or cream and was very bitter. He told me it was unsweet which is my preference. Not this time. I used 2 packets of raw sugar in this tiny mug just to make it palatable for me. It was like a cross between black coffee and anise or black licorice. With the sugar I did drink and enjoy all of it, but I'm not sure why because the taste was really not my cup of tea, to turn a phrase. We received a complimentary cracker like bread and several dipping sauces. I ordered Aago Hyderabadi Chicken for $16. I also ordered cheese naan on the side. The cheese naan was very good. I could have just eaten that. The Hyderabadi was labelled spicy/hot, and I asked for the level 2, the lowest level of spice it can be. It had just enough kick and was very flavorful. It was served with lovely jasmine rice. My friend ordered the Vegetable Jalfrezy also with jasmine rice, and Garlic Naan. We both took home a large enough portion to enjoy a meal later. The menu is extensive and full of options for all palates and tastes. I would love to return here and can see myself ordering cheese naan to go at the very least! read more

This was my first time here, I wanted to try new Indian restaurant and it was drive for me but the reviews were good and I decided to give them a try. I placed order online for pick up and my order was ready when I arrived. In a time where most restaurants are increasing prices but reducing quantity and quality Aago was refreshing surprise. I ordered the chicken momo, it is similar to potstickers except packed with flavor and filling. I also tried the palak paneer, I can honestly say this was best version I've had - seasoned well and generous portion it also came with basmati rice which was also flavorful by itself . I got the vegetable samosas, again very generous portioned and flavorful. The last dish I got was the chicken biryani and it was amazing and it also came with a full boiled egg that's was a nice surprise. Their rice pudding was awesome as well. With the quality and consistency of the food, I adamantly believe that Aago could earn a Michellin star if they renovated the interior to give the place a better appearance. But we came back out on Tuesday and made our way back to Aago for dinner. When it comes to Indian food, I am predictable. Well we both are predictable. My wife loves biriyani and I'm a sucker for chicken Korma. That's what we ordered with a side of garlic naan. The food was excellent. We actually smelled the spices and aromas of the food when we walked in the front door. We got all giddy as we were seated and ordered. Everything I've ever had at Aago is delicious. We had a particularly great meal tonight. The provided papadum and sauces are always tasty. We started with steamed chicken momos. They were excellent and had a delicious sauce. The keema naan - stuffed with ground lamb - was great. The Hyderabadi chicken and Aago biryani were absolutely delicious.
