Was very impressed by Spice Palace when I visited earlier this month! My only regret from the whole experience is not taking more photos. The ambience feels like a very nice, cozy Indian restaurant, and the staff were super friendly, warm, and attentive. A friend and I asked for a table for two and did not have to wait long before the server came to take our order. We got the masala dosa, chicken seekh kebab, butter chicken, garlic naan and the Bhindi (okra). The dosa, which came first, came with excellent sambar and coconut chutney. It can be very difficult to find authentic tasting coconut chutney at Indian restaurants, but this one really brought the flavor and was a highlight of the meal. The sambar was also very authentic and tasty. The dosa itself was crispy and hit the spot. The north Indian dishes also tasted great, the chicken kebab was tender and came with onions and peppers, which was a nice touched. The butter chicken was one of the better butter, chicken dishes I've had in recent memory and the Bhindi/okra was not too oily and packed with flavor. Next time I'm back in Williamsburg, I would love to come here again and can't wait. read more

I loved this place! So much so that I wish I lived closer by so I could eat there more often. Warm greeting at the door, comfortable seating, eye-poppingly bright décor against a dark background (also known as a 'wall,' or wallpaper, ha ha!) so it really stands out even more. The service was great, the food was delicious, the experience exalting. End result: relaxed, refreshed, ready to move on having been greatly nourished .... It was also fun to try some new things I had never had or seen before! That's always an added bonus when it happens -- and here, it did! I'd never seen 'Masala Papad' before, so of course I had to get it! It did not disappoint! I'd imagined the papadam being as they usually are -- flat -- and then in this dish that it would have some toppings on it, looking like a flat taco or a small pizza, but oh was I gladly wrong! Wow! Only thing is, I might be ruining this for someone else by taking away the joyous surprise! However, I understand that most people don't like a surprise as much as I do, so I guess it's okay to give it away. Anyway, these were super-flavourful and fun. I got the 'three' spice level. That's a wonderful aspect of dining here -- you get to choose your spice level, dish by dish. For the hot and sour soup, I got a 'two' spice level -- however I found it to be spicier than the two of the Masala Papad, and I'm guessing that's because, well, it's soup and so there is more of it closer together, rather than the air between pieces of various foods in the Masala Papad, and also the thermal heat of the soup probably elevates the feeling of spiciness. Another dish I had never tried was the Chilly Tofu. It was absolutely, spectacularly delicious not only in taste but the wonderful texture. In fact, I was so amazed by how good the texture was that in describing my delight, the waiter wondered if I had ever tried tofu before. I'd had tofu many, many times in my life in a large number of settings and so many different variations -- such as soft, pan-fried, deep-fried, in soup, skewered on a stick, served with all kinds of things -- but this particular tofu was just extra super-duper scrumdiddlyumptious! The three appetizers I ate filled me up enough that I didn't need anything else -- well, except chai, that is! -- so I didn't order an entrée, and will have to leave that for next time .... Might I add, it is an oasis from the heat and anything else going on outside ... and the dishes and drinks served here will also give your body more heat-fighting ability because that is the nature of Indian food! It's healthy! Not just nutritious but literally body-building -- including giving your immune system just what it needs .... Definitely, absolutely, certainly most highly recommended! read more

Stopped in for the weekend lunch buffet that runs 11am-3pm. All chicken and veg dishes that were so tasty. The saag paneer was amazing. Nothing was too spicy, but you could increase spice level at the "sauce bar." 10+ options on the buffet plus naan, salads and desserts. The sauce bar had chutney's, riata, Indian hot sauce, & pickled veg. The staff is so kind. They have an assortment of Indian beers. It's been years since my last visit and I'm glad it hasn't changed. Our meals were wonderful. As for service, the young man was very intentive and took care of us. Now one thing I always try to remind folks that when you go to an Indian restaurant, this isn't fast food. It doesn't come out in 3 to 5 minutes. Almost all Indian restaurants cook their food fresh which is a very good thing. From the time we ordered to the time we got at our table was probably 10 minutes maybe 13 at the most not bad at all. So I will say this, although it took me several years to get back. I do highly recommend those that visit the Williamsburg area or happen to live in the area, to enjoy this place. I do look forward to going back on a Friday or Saturday, since that's when they have their mini buffet. That's actually what we had several years ago. It was off the charts wonderful. Sadly, we just seem to not be able to get back in the area those days in a week. read more

Food is good, just for the cultural guidance, you eat with the bread. It's finger food and when it's wrapped in naan it balances the spice profile. Ambiance was pretty with Hindu idols all around you. Service very authentic Indians working there so the customer service is a tad different than American dining. I am by no means an Indian cuisine expert, but I must say I was disappointed with our experience. Service was friendly but not very attentive considering we were the only table in the restaurant at the time of our visit. As vegans, we did appreciate the welcoming of dietary restrictions that this restaurant emphasizes which was a big part of our choice to dine here. That said, the differentiation between vegan and vegetarian options on the menu was very fuzzy. We found dishes marked as vegan that were actually vegetarian which led to us having to ask a lot of questions to ensure there was no dairy in our food. Even with our diligence, I'm pretty sure our samosas had butter in the pastry. I understand that our lifestyle presents some difficulties at the average restaurant and requires us to be creative sometimes, and we are very appreciative of businesses like this one who make an effort to have something for everyone, but I would recommend clarifying the menu and the difference between vegan and vegetarian. Otherwise an unwitting vegan, or worse, someone with a dairy allergy, may end up eating a curry with cream in it. The food was... okay. We ordered a vegetable biryani that tasted of raw spice and featured your typical frozen vegetable medley. It did have a very nice heat level. We asked for 3/5 and it was perfect for us. The best thing we had though was the plain naan which was warm and chewy. I will say that the ambience was cozy and the servers were pleasant, and it seems to be a local favorite with the numerous accolades that adorn their walls, so perhaps we caught them on a bad night. read more

I am not sure what is going on at Spice Palace. It was once one of our favorite restaurants in Williamsburg. We regularly ordered takeout over the last five years. Our standard order is Chicken Tika Masala and Garlic Naan. The last couple times we have ordered there each serving had less chicken than usual. The first time it happens I chalked it up to possibly the person on kitchen duty that day. Four times later and it definitely has less meat in the serving. Same container size with the chicken and sauce but less meat. Today, I arrived to a sign on the door that said under new management. I pick up our food and head home. The sauce was not the same as usual. It tased like Campbell's Tomato Soup with some caramelized onions and some spices. Too sweet, runny consistency and not very good. The chicken was skimpy as well. The naan tasted like it was store bought reheated. No char as normal. I won't be back. There are other fine Indian restaurants in the area. read more

Such a great restaurant but why is it hidden. Came here for lunch and found that service is amazing. I opted for the at your table Buffet. It's really an awesome service. I picked for my 1st round the traditional curry and for the second, I opted for the butter one. Both were good. The Naan was fresh out of the oven and flavorful. This is such a great idea to have the plates off buffet come to you. The 1st round was so much food that I only opted for rice and chicken for the 2nd, and I didn't even finish it. After a nice walk in the woods and a beer we were in the area and looking for a good Indian food experience. We checked on Google and saw that this place had new ownership and decided to try it out. We were greeted by the owner and he made a great appetizer for tasing three of their chutneys, Tamarin, Mint and a Mango. They were all delicious. Came with a dosa dumpling and assorted vegetables. Excellent! We ordered the Lamb Vindaloo and the Sambar. They came out with rice and the spicers were perfect. The Garlic Naan bread was hot and fresh and cooked to perfection. We had to try desert; and got the Rice Pudding and Mango Pudding. They were amazing! Light and tasty. Perfect ending. The owner was very friendly and we enjoyed talking with him. It became my normal routine, until after 3 years it was time to go back to the United States. My spouse and I started eating there every day before we left. We got back in the US in 2021. Now since we have been back we have tried countless Indian restaurants big and small with no successful comparison to the authentic one we been to TILL NOW. We tried Spice Palace Indian Restaurant in Williamsburg, VA. It is the best and only one that has come close to my first time experience. 10 out of 10 stars. I was a little weary at first because it's a buffet style place, but my husband encouraged me to try it. Ohh my my I Am GLAD I DID. I will continue to travel here from North Carolina and soon to be Texas. The interior design it makes you feel as if you're in a different country. Owner and staff are very welcoming. Would love to like this place because the restaurant looks authentic, adorned with all that's beautifully made in India - from a garment, to hanging baskets and jewelry for sale. Unfortunately it's a restaurant and it should be noteworthy for its food. The non-veggie thali had chickpeas, makhani, butter chicken, a tandoor chicken drumstick, a couple of quarter cut butter naan, a couple bread desserts, a serving of basmati rice and strangely as if it didn't go with the thali some cold pickled cucumber...the tandoor chicken was very dry. The chicken biryani tasted more like fried rice rather than what you'd expect - dum biryani. You hardly can find chicken pieces and the rice was overly riddled with so many spices, the color was reddish orange and the taste was overpowering. read more

I did not eat at their restaurant but ate at their Food Truck Amma's Curry in a Hurry and by the quality of the food, I would not be going to their restaurant anytime soon. The tandoori chicken, the potatoes and the donut that came with the big sampler were the best dishes. The mango curry had shredded chicken in it (weird and made me think that it was leftover chicken) it did have a decent flavor. The butter paneer lacked flavor! This might have been the worst butter curry sauce I have ever tried. Very disappointed. The basmati rice was not fluffy and dry and the naan bread was hard and crunchy. read more

Limited menu, mandatory mini buffet served to you. Beware all the extra upcharges- want salmon, shrimp, lamb or goat? $2 extra. Want garlic naan, ...extra. Want dosa...can't have it (it was on regular menu). Pappadums? Nope. For starters we ordered chicken vindaloo, mine was supposed to be extra spicy. On a 1-5 scale my 5 was a one. The server was srrprised and brought us hot sauce. He was polite and told us he would ask chef to make level 8. Lady came and loudly said she couldn't do anything, level was what it was. Later heard shouting in the kitchen, loud comments about how things should be done... Upon returning, she became kinder and more easy going and said the cook would be happy to adjust the spice. While we appreciate the attempt to keep a buffet option safe during COVID, perhaps it isn't the best option. read more

I met with a business client for dinner at Spice Palace Indian Restaurant in Williamsburg and had one of the best dining experiences. The food was very delicious, and the service was outstanding. The staff took time to explain the menu in great detail. I would rate this restaurant as being one of the best restaurants in Williamsburg. If you are looking for something different than your average restaurant and average atmosphere. I would strongly recommend this restaurant. Questionable food preparation hygiene, and questionable hiring practices my niece who was 19 worked behind the bar making mix drinks.

I want to start by saying the food was absolutely delicious. We ordered chicken momo, samosas, garlic naan, chicken madras curry, and dal mahkni. All amazing. I really wanted to give a five star review. The restaurant is dimly lit and relaxing. The dishes are all served on metal plates and bowls, which is unique. It keeps your entrees hot the entire time you're eating. We were there on a Saturday night and the place was busy. The two servers on our side of the restaurant were quite young, and seemed to be having a hard time keeping up with the orders. They were both super pleasant, and maybe the restaurant is looking for wait staff. They were also handling all the to go orders so they were repeatedly asking tables the same questions about checks and dishes. We definitely will return to catch the buffet and I would absolutely recommend this place for the food. read more
