I would say about a 2.5 stars type of place. Came Tuesday at 6:30pm and quite empty then filled up. Happy hour is 5-7 though! First no no is not a large noodle option.. I know most people love their pad thai and I was definitely craving some pad see ew. But I settled for their curry noodle, thinking ok best of both worlds then.. curry and noodles! But I don't like spicy and she did warn me they can't make it non spicy. So I thought I could handle mild but damn their mild is like med to hot at other places! So be prepared. My stomach wasn't loving me, and the curry was good! But I couldn't enjoy it because it was too hot. Even other people in my party thought it was too hot and they like spicy food. The food also took about 30 minutes. So yes I could try other things on their menu, but am I likely to come back.. probably not. :( read more

This is a great little Thai place that conveniently abuts Stone Brewing. You can order Thai food and they will bring it out while you are at Stone which has a really nice fun courtyard filled with giant boulders and fireplaces and things. Unfortunately when we were there last night after two rounds of drinks and Som Tum the security guard came in to the courtyard just to verify that we were patrons. Located on the edge of Little Italy in what should already be downtown, Aaharn is situated street-side, but with the entrance located within a business mall. Aaharn is by Koon Thai in Kearny Mesa, but this branch serves more traditional Thai dishes. Choose from appetizers, entrees, soups, salads, curry, and desserts. Happy hour is from 5-7pm everyday! A good selection of appetizers and house wines each for $5. On this outing with some gal pals, I opted for a sweet glass of Thai tea, Massamun curry with pork shank ($12), and picked at gyoza and fried calamari shared between us for HH. Thai tea was light and sweet. Gyoza and calamari were delightful. I loved how the calamari looked like onion rings! The **Massamun Curry** was the definite highlight with it's TWO giant bone-in pork shanks, potatoes and carrots all among a curry paste sea of star anise, cloves, and cinnamon sticks (yes, real sticks!). I've never had the pleasure of trying this type of curry before having only seen Yellow, Red, Green, and Panang curry on most main stream Thai menus. This version was definitely heavier and rich with flavor, especially with the assortment of spices. Paste was dense and creamy! Pork shanks weren't tender, but were meaty and scrumptious. Portion size was very generous and I look forward to consuming my other pork shank and left over curry today during lunch. Dessert menu was ever present and we could not say no when asked. Ours included soft and warm bites of mango, taro, and boba nestled within a sweet coconut-condensed milk bed. Delicious! Pretty tasty Thai food! I enjoyed the tom yom soup that was both spicy and sour. They definitely give you plenty of veggies with it. The pork spare ribs were also quite good. It's located by the train station in front of Stone Brewery Taproom. Entrance is on the street side. I came here for lunch with friends. The decor was modern and clean. Service was prompt and courteous. I ordered the chef special of salmon curry. The dish was served on an oversized plate. Coconut milk was swirled on top of the curry sauce. The farmed salmon tasted like it was wrapped in plastic before it was cooked. It was a very flavorful dish. I was warned that their spice level is spicier than most restaurants. I ordered a medium and it was more of a mild. For $2 more you can get mixed Jasmine rice with the dish. I opted for that and it came in a cute pyramid shape. A little hard to find but sooo worth it! Not only was this the best Thai food I have ever eaten ,my Massaman curry lamb shank was one of the best dishes I have ever had. Lamb cooked perfectly,but it was the spices used that made it incredibly good. Lynh (not sure how to spell her name) told me they get spices direct from Bangkok makes a difference ! I love Koon Thai, so I was pretty excited about ordering take out from this place. They wrapped everything super nicely. The Thai iced tea was really good, but the pad see ew was pretty bland and just one big chunk of flavorless noodles. I'd stick with the curries! It may have just been a rough delivery day! read more

We only had appetizers but they were very good. For their happy hour they have a few things for $5 we had three of them. The Gyoza were very good I loved the sauce they had with them. We got fried spring rolls which were good but pretty basic. Lastly we had edamame. Not the best I've had but not bad. Their menu looked great but we weren't super hungry. So this is a great hidden gem to downtown. My fiancé and I frequent Koon Thai in Kearny Mesa off of Convoy. It is actually one of his favorite places for Thai Food in San Diego, but this place is great. I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to find this location. I kept on reading that it was nearby my office and I would walk aimlessly on my lunch breaks trying to locate it - to only give up an go somewhere else nearby. After two trips of aimlessly walking by the Santa Fe Depot, I found it when I wasn't paying attention as I was walking back to my office from Starbucks. For those who are still looking for this place, there literally is not a storefront sign, it is literally written on the window in paint, surrounded by cluttered signs from nearby establishments. So be careful and be on the lookout. Also, please note that the menu is completely different from Koon Thai. I know some of you are thinking, "duh, it's a different restaurant!?" But there isn't a single dish that carries over. I think the only things that are similar is the fact that they serve Thai food and their spice level measurements. That being said... BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR SPICE LEVEL. Don't be brave. Don't try and prove something. Don't be in pain and not enjoy your food. Be realistic because their spicy is serious - like burn your b*tthole serious. Don't say that I didn't warn you. Other than that the place is pretty small and clean. Koon is by far my most favorite Thai restaurant in SD... so it goes without saying how excited I was to hear they were behind Aaharn and the fact that I live literally across the street from it was a plus! it's a welcomed addition to the multitude of pizza and pasta choices in the area. they have a limited menu which isn't a problem, however their limited menu is so incredibly limited... especially for vegetarians... it's sad. I took my vegetarian parents, who absolutely love Thai, to Aaharn. unfortunately, their only option for dinner was curry. that was the only hot dish option available to them (of which, my father isn't a fan of coconut milk based curry) and cold options were papaya salad and tofu roll. Aaharn offers 'mock meat' so why couldn't they make a dish they offer like ka-prow (spicy basil stir fry) with mock meat instead of chicken??! we were told the kitchen has limited ingredients, but we weren't asking for ingredients not listed on their menu. basically, my parents could only order mock meat in the curry dish and not as a substitute in any of the other meat dishes. lame. I still love Koon and all the dishes they offer to all palates, and my parents have enjoyed it each time I've taken them there. guess we're just going to have to trek over to Kearny for our Thai fix. too bad for Aaharn. read more

This place is such a hidden gem that I nearly considered not reviewing it so I could keep it a secret all to myself. It's small and unassuming and you might even miss it from the street. It's casual enough to walk in wearing your pajamas but cool enough to take someone on a date. The best dishes in my opinion are the Tom Yum hot pot, the Green Curry with pork shank, and the Jap Chae Basil glass noodle dish. I love this place. It's authentic Thai in the city. Umami overload for sure. Some of my favs so far: lime white fish, Nam Tok filet salad * über tasty, and any of their curries. The portions are very generous too. Tip: order one spice level down. Their medium is *hot* compared to most American Thai restaurants. Love this Thai food restaurant! I work from home and occasionally come here for lunch. Great spot to grab a quick bite to eat while working. Love their papaya salad and tom yum soup with shrimp! If you love spicy food, definitely try level 8 or higher. You won't regret it! Those Thai chilies definitely have a kick to them! Really nice Thai food restaurant! We just stopped in for a glass of wine! There are so nice to just serve us wine after walking several blocks around the Santa Fe train station looking for anything. We suggested they post that serve wine and actually have a wine bar in the window. It would have saved us a lot of walking around. Just ordered takeout while on vacation here in San Diego. Ordered the Laksa Lamak with tofu, specifically asking for fried tofu. Dish is supposed to be a "spicy curry rice noodle" served w bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, green onions and lime. What I got was a soup of soft tofu with nothing else- no noodles, green onions, or anything else. Nothing close to what I was expecting based on menu description, I don't live here but warning to other Thai food loving ppl on vacation, would order somewhere else. Edited to change review to a 3- after reply from owner , I did find a small container w the additional veggies, which I thought was a rice container. Unfortunately still annoyed as I love fried but hate soft tofu. Most Thai restaurants do have fried tofu option, so just want to make future customers aware apparently that's not an option here. read more

Love their nam tok nuer here. The sauce it's in is awesome. Everything else here is just ok. I used to love their green curry, until they stopped using the green Thai eggplants in it. I'm still disappointed that they don't just have regular Pad Thai. I can't bring myself to pay $18 for a Pad Thai dish with river prawn. And fair warning, their spicy level is indeed hot. Yes they do have the normal curries that all thai spots have but they also have some unusual dishes you might not find at other thai restaurants. I asked for the basil Korean glass noodles with chicken. I was disappointed on the quantity of chicken in the dish just a few pieces.. although there were a tonne of noodles. I coulndt finish all of them. And at spice level 7 out of 10 it was very spicy and hot.. made me sweat.. Good food.. But they need to balance their dishes. read more
