I've taken dresses to this tailor two times now and I've been very happy both times. He is friendly and does great work. Both times he asked me when I needed the item (instead of telling me when it would be done, which I have encountered at other places) and was able to meet my request. This shop does all sorts of alterations and repairs, not just clothing. According to their business card, they also repair jewelry, watches, leather goods, zippers, luggage, shoes and they do embroidery. I highly recommend this shop. Mixed review. Took in two pairs of shoes to be serviced. One was a pair of doc Martin's that belong to my daughter that needed polishing. Picked them up quickly and they did a really good job - looked refreshed and clean. The second pair belonging to me, leather sneakers that were pink colored, and I wanted them dyed black. He told me this was doable. However, when I went the first time to pick up my daughters 's shoes a week later the clerk said that they were not ready as they needed another coat. I should come back in a week. I did that three times actually and then literally months later the shoes were finally ready. What a disappointment when I picked them up! After all that frustration back-and-forth wasting my time, the shoes looked terrible :( They were dyed black, yes but wavy where they met the soul and the dye might've dripped. Also super shiny and replaced with subpar shoelaces. Oh, worst part is they never offered me a discount. This is too bad because I did have one good experience, but the second pair of shoes would make me reconsider returning. read more

Only thing is, they didn't call me when they had it done, which is fine, but I think it would be better if they had done that so I can pick it up the earliest possible. Very bad experience here on 10-23-20; walked in and asked man at desk to please put on a mask. He refused and went in back; I thought he was probably looking for a mask. Then instead of coming back masked, he sent another larger man out who also refused to wear a mask; I told them I had an underlying condition copd which did no good; they would not wait on me because i had underlying conditions and because they do not wear masks; hard to imagine such disrespect, disregard and discrimination from a business owner during this time of COVID with WI showing escalation of the virus..warning to all!!.. read more

Have you ever had one of those moments when you are talking to another person and after a few exchanges, you realize that other person is existing in an unparalleled universe, a possible crazy land, or at least a reality far far away. Welcome to the distorted idea of business and customer service of Paul at Aba Semar. What follows is a shortened version of a weird and convoluted exchange. Paul: (phone) 'we were cleaning out our storage, i remember you calling about 6 months ago. We found your two leather bags". Me: "WHAT? yes I did call you 6 months ago hoping to find answers about my bags I gave you 2 years ago." Me: (now in store) "I can't believe you have my bags after all the times I called and came in, I have given bad reviews of you all over the place" Paul: "What, why were are so good" Me: "umm you told me you could not find them and probably donated them" Paul: (with old guy and bags) "here is a strap that we could use (simple strap I am sure they have had forever) and this is all we could find for this one (totally wrong color)." Me: "this wont work it does not match, and this might be long enough" Paul (while waiting for old guy to trim, smooth and punch 4 holes in a strap): " You should bring in your other leather repair needs." Me: "You know I am never coming here again, right?" Paul "But why, we are good and we are good to our customers" Me " You had my stuff for over 2.5 years and said you donated them after never calling me and me coming in and calling you multiple times!" Then...they bring out the simple leather strap, and were going to charge me $36. Recognizing the danger of stirring the waters in crazy town, I gently say, "you are charging me for this, after 2.5 years?" Paul: "yeah, we should charge you storage fees hahaha, don't worry I will give you a good deal" he rings up $20.21 or something, I give him $20 and walk out, Bizarro- I have never experienced anything like this. read more

I had a warranty repair for luggage that I purchased at Target which was redirected to this shop, among many others. (None in Chicago where I live.) I was impressed with the responsiveness to my questions and then the quality of the repair to my luggage handle was as if it were new. I would return to Aba Semar with any future luggage repair needs, assuming the cost to have it done here would be worth the trip from Chicago...and probably swing by one of the microbreweries while I'm in town. read more

I took two pairs of boots here for repairs. One pair needed stitching, on the other leather needed to be glued to sole. Pretty basic. It took two weeks for the work to be completed. Stitching was done very well - can't even see it. Gluing was sad - they just put three large blobs of glue along the sole, and left it at that. Good thing these are casual boots - were these for work, I would have to get rid of them, The price was awesome - $11 for each pair. I can live with that. But why it took 14 days to splatter some glue on my boots - I will never know. Probably will not come back. read more

I've recommended this place for years but have seen a real downturn on customer service. When I took in a shoe recently for repair I found them to be rude but decided to ignore it. I then lost the claim ticket. After looking for a while I decided to take its mate in to see about getting the shoe back. I was told they probably threw it out. Advised they don't call even though they take a number and he really didn't care at all that the shoe was gone. Then I asked them to repair a brand new leash. He absolutely refused stating dogs contaminate the equipment. Sounds reasonable, but there was a dog in there when I dropped off the shoe. I think a new leash has a lot less dog on it than a dog. read more

Brought in a hiking boot for repair in the dead of winter and when recently looking for my boots for an upcoming trip , now 5 months later, realized I had forgotten to pick up my boot from ABA Semar and figured it was likely lost as a result of my own stupidity . Had no ticket but had the other boot and on a lark went on buy the shop and much to my amazement it took them 20 seconds to find my repaired boot and it was good as new. The shop would have had complete justification to clear out my boot from the shelves months ago and they wouldn't even accept more money for service well above and beyond. To replace these boots would have been an expensive proposition......Highly Recommended read more

I called Aba Semar to repair a Travelpro briefcase as they were one of the recommended repair shops on the Travelpro site. After I explained the problem, he asked when I needed to travel next with the case. When I answered tomorrow, he did not hesitate and told me to come in that same day. He fixed my handle - and fixed another piece that was about to break - in under five minutes and charged me a minimal amount for both. GREAT service! read more

I took two suitcases in for relatively minor repairs (a new handle on one and a new zipper on the other) and was told to return in 10 days to pick them up. Upon my return, I found the suitcases exactly where I placed them when I dropped them off. The gentleman in the store handed me one then realized the other still was missing the handle. He conferred with another gentleman quietly and then said "return in 30 minutes and we'll have this done, but your other suitcase is finished." However, I found the zipper still broken on the one he said had been repaired! I left without receiving an explanation or apology. I have been a good customer of this repair service business for over ten years. I brought my purse in for a small tear that the owner told me he would sew for $4. He said it would be a small stitch and easy to repair. I then came back into get the purse and they replaced the entire strap on the purse with their own material instead of just sewing the tear as originally agreed upon. The job looked terrible and I complained. They never called me to ask me if I wanted the straps (which were perfectly fine) to be removed. I complained about this and told them that they should have called me to authorize this repair and major adjustment to my bag. The new straps were sewn on crooked and looked terrible. I could not wear the purse like this. The owner's son told me they would sew back on the original straps that came with the bag. He assured me that they would be sewn on straight and look just like it did before the repair job. I came in a few weeks later and the job was again sewn crooked and done very poorly. I asked him to please repair the bag and do the job over because it looked terrible. He started a big fight with me and told me to leave his store. I called in today to speak to his father and his father hung up on me and told me that he couldn't help me. I called back in and spoke to the son and he told me that he couldn't help me and hung up on me twice. A repair, which I did not authorize, was conducted on my purse and then when the job was inferior and my bag is ruined and they refuse to help me. He told me to file a complaint with the BBB. I am appalled at how I was treated after being a customer for over 10 years and at the workmanship on my purse. A $300 purse is now ruined and is garbage to me now. His father told me to go to the store and purchase a new purse. That is the absolute worst customer service I have ever received. I am 40 years old and in all my life I have never filed a complaint against anyone in the BBB or online. I asked them to please fix it and they refused. I now have to pay to get the repair done elsewhere and I was without my bag for 6 weeks. I would like them to pay the cost of the repair to my bag, which I have to get done elsewhere. It is the least they can do after ruining my purse, but they refuse to help me. Do not take your repairs there because you will eventually regret it! read more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE at Oakland location. Said they would call with price estimates (since the man working had no knowledge of prices...), never called. I came into the store in person almost a week later, still no work had been done and no estimates were ready. They called me later to tell me that the shoes I sent in would cost a ridiculous amount to be repaired (I have a fair amount of experience with cobblers), so I asked them not to touch my shoes, and I would come to pick them up. They agreed. When I came to pick them up a couple of days later, one of my shoes had been repaired, and they wanted me to pay for the service, after I had explicitly told them not to touch my shoes. The man I dealt with was SO RUDE, lied to my face about the whole situation, and I couldn't believe it. I've never been treated so poorly as a customer. I will never go back, and will spread the word to everyone I know who needs a cobbler. read more
