I've had ABC Cafe twice, once dining in and once to go. The dining in experience is good. The dining room is not terribly large so you'll get the opportunity to see many different dishes other than your own. The staff are nice enough and do a good job of talking you through the menu items when prompted. My partner and I tried some small plates and we had some real winners. The bao buns especially for their doughy soft exterior and delicious savory pork inside. I was also impressed with their seafood quality on my shrimp dish I ordered to go. This place is known to be more authentic than your average Chinese around here. They offer an extensive menu that you will likely find something you enjoy from here. I tried the shrimp fried rice, beef shank pancake wrap, and the salt and pepper soft shell crab. The fried rice is good, but was definitely lacking salt, which was an easy fix. It was not too oily as well. The soft shell crab was pretty good, but I wish the breading was a little more crispy. The added cabbage with the fresh jalepeno is definitely needed to make the dish more light as the breading could be considered pretty heavy alone. My favorite thing to try was the beef shank pancake wrap, which reminds me of beef pho all wrapped up in a nicely fried pancake wrap. On the inside is beef shank, hoisin sauce, and cilantro, making this a great accompaniment to any main dish. This was not my first visit here, but my favorite dish I have had from here was the beef chow fun. I wanted to try something different this time, but I wish I would have gotten it again. It is one of their more popular dishes out of their many, and I recommend trying it if you have not! No complaints on the service. The place is pretty small and I would likely just order takeout from here rather than dine in, but do not mistake this place for your typical fast food American Chinese. The space itself is a little cramped and the menu isn't a large as what I would normally see at a Chinese restaurant but the photos help! I don't think there's anything bad on the menu... we'll maybe the shu mai and the soup dumplings weren't that appetizing. The shu mai was overcooked and didn't look fresh. We have thought for some time about just wanting to try ABC because of our love of dumplings and Dim sum. I think that we wanted it to be really great, but it was OK, not great. We wanted to love it, we liked it. There's Fortune Palace for Chinese dishes and Bo Ling is excellent but pricey. As a former New Yorker with Chinatown available then, that is tough to compare with. I visited this cool little dim sum spot with 2 friends, both are from China. We had a minimal wait for a table , but it was well worth it. The restaurant is small but quite quaint. I let them order everything and they ordered in Mandarin so I had no idea what we were getting! I was pleasantly surprised by everything they ordered. The food did not exactly look like the photos from menu but it was all delicious. The service was quick and they continually brought out our dishes in succession, so that we never had to wait. My favorite was the Siu Mai and Barbeque pork puff, the pastry was so light and flaky. Everything was really good and my friends said it reminded them of Hong Kong. Tables turn over pretty quickly. Food: this is not your typical Chinese restaurant. It's mainly dim sum. However even if you love the Americanized Chinese food (sweet and sour chicken, kung pao chicken, etc...) you will find something you like. The menu is in Chinese with pictures of the food. Just point to what you want. There is an English description. We have gotten so much from here and it's all great. Bok Choy, shrimp dumplings, pork pot stickers, scallion pancakes, and on and on. tl;dr -- I don't recommend their dim sum (Bo Ling's is better), but I'd come back in case their other dishes are worth a try. Their service is excellent. Full disclosure: I've been told my standard for Chinese food is high, growing up in the majority Asian suburbs of California. I've been trying to convince an Asian friend to move out to Kansas and I'm pretty sure taking her here did not help my case. Maybe ABC Cafe's shrimp dumplings/har gow are amazing, but they were out when I went for dinner. Maybe dinner is not the best time to come to ABC Cafe, but I thought if they had whole day dim sum, it'd be good. Service was great, but the dim sum just wasn't that good and the portions were small. I'd come back to try their non-dim sum options in case those are better. 3 stars - Coconut custard buns: Not sure if this was meant to be nai wong bao, but these were good. Considering how small these were, it's probably hard to get the custard texture right, because they were a little dry. 3 stars - Minced beef and cilantro soup (aka West Lake beef soup): I was so happy to see this on the menu because this is peak comfort food to me, but this had no flavor. At least the texture was okay. 0 stars - Siu mai: Possibly the worst siu mai I've had in my life, and it's not my favorite dish to begin with. It felt like I was eating dog food-- salty mashed meat with a gross mouthfeel/texture. 3 stars - Egg tarts: Not too sweet, at least a little flaky, but kind of oily and pretty small. 2 stars - Sesame puff: Tiny portions. I can't even remember the taste. 4 stars - Fried mushrooms: Haven't seen this dish, but it tasted good and reminded me of calamari. 2 stars - Curry puffs: Not much filling, but what there was was flavorful. Unfortunately, the pastry was too stringy and chewy instead of flaky. 3.5 stars - Mango pudding: Weird that it had real mango in it, but decent. 2 stars - BBQ pork bun: Not fluffy enough, but the flavor was kind of there. 1 star - Beef cilantro wrap: Drowning in hoisin sauce and the texture was like beef brisket instead of the thinner slices this dish normally has. This really is a hole in the wall and it's not very big, but it's always packed for very good reason. Their prices are fairly reasonable and definitely less oil than most places. They are quick to cook your food and they are mostly very tasty. Their steamed flounder was especially delicious and reasonable. Everything else was above average and service was amazing. All the servers are very nice. I will come back for some more flounder! This place has a delicious variety of dishes to choose from. I had such a delightful experience, it was like having a meal over at your friend's house, the service was one of the best around. The servers kept coming around constantly to fill drinks and check on us. For a small restaurant, the seating is arranged to hold a packed house. This is definitely one of those restaurants that you have to put on the list if you love your taste buds. The one thing that I will mention is that they don't have a bar (cocktails or mixed drinks), they do serve a small selection of bottled beer though, one of them being Sapporo. One of the few places in Kansas City that has consistent food - my parents and their friends have consistently gone here for years for takeout and dine-in. I dine-in for their all day dim sum which is a rarity in KC. While their dim sum menu is limited, it has a couple of the classics like turnip cakes, dim sum, beef shank roll (wish it were bigger, it's about the size of a small spring roll - I could eat like 5 of those), bbq pork bao, egg custards, chicken feet, etc. I've only been in late in the evenings around 8pm when it's been just my party and another. Get there right when it opens because this place fills up fast. We were in town visiting and wanted Dim Sum so based on reviews from various sources this was the place to go. They open oddly at 11:45 and we're completely full by 12:10 or so. Food ranges from ok to really good. We started off with crab Rangoon and those tasted odd...the filling was a brown/gray color and tasted like no crab Rangoon I've ever eaten. Just odd flavor. The fried rice we ordered were light in color and not dark brown as you expect but they still tasted good. The dim sum items were hit or Miss. BBQ pork steamed buns tasted meh, shrimp dumplings were good, seafood dumplings were good, pork in tofu skin was MUCH smaller than I have seen it at any other dim sum place, and lastly the steamed rice in lotus leaf was ok at best. My husband for the abc chicken and said it was delicious! Wanted to like the food more. Would rate it 3/5 for food and 5/5 for speed of service. The bathrooms also appeared clean but had a very odd smell, maybe they had a leak at one point?? Anyways, our family of 6 was divided on the food.
