Lunch Menu (1 of 2)

I enjoyed the classic Chinese atmosphere, the charming hostess (owner?) and the tasty food during my dine-in lunch at this 50-year-old restaurant in a historic (dated 1915?) building in downtown OP. My chicken with assorted vegetables lunch (competitively priced at $10.75) included choice of entrée, egg drop soup, wonton chips, fried rice and choice of crab rangoon or egg roll. The egg drop soup was served five minutes after I ordered at the table, while the entrée was served 16 minutes later. I was somewhat surprised that they did not offer white rice or sweet and sour soup as options. The egg drop soup was okay, while the entrée had a reasonable amount of premium chicken and a good assortment of veggies, but an overabundance of sauce. I did enjoy the tasty, smoky, fried rice and the crab rangoon with plenty of creamy, tasty goodness. The service was mixed, with a first-rate hostess and an attentive but somber waiter. I noticed three dining areas (including a party room) with a mix of booths and tables, classic Chinese decorations, Chinese background music and a small bar. Very nice!

I hadn't been to Dragon Inn in several years but had a craving for Chinese and I was in the area. I ordered online via Yelp and everything was super easy. My order was ready when I got there and the one individual I interacted with was very friendly. My order was accurate when I arrived home. I started with egg drop soup. I could eat a vat of it. Just a tasty, classic egg drop soup. I would definitely recommend it! I also ordered crab Rangoon and egg rolls. Both were delicious. I would order both again. The Rangoon were large and full of delicious filling. The egg rolls were good sized and I liked the mixture. For an entree, I went with beef and broccoli. I upgraded to fried rice. The portion was generous, it ended up being two meals for me. The broccoli was fresh. The beef was good quality and tender. And the sauce was flavorful. I liked the fried rice as well. It's a bit plain but I'm okay with it. My boyfriend ordered the general tsos chicken and I tried some. The chicken pieces were quite large, he couldn't finish his either. The chicken was good quality white meat. It was a little sweeter than I prefer but I'm sure you can ask them to spice it up if that's your thing. I really have no complaints. I really enjoyed my food and I'll definitely return and recommend.

Food was ready very quick. Both the entrees were fairly bland. one of our soups was wrong. I ordered egg drop soup and was given wonton soup. The rangoon were tasty.

Eating here was nostalgic as I used to eat here all the time as a kid. It really hasn't changed, which is a good thing. Very traditional and very friendly service. It was all SUPER quick too. Everything is good, Brown sauce was decent, but not overly flavorful. Highly recommended for some solid food and service.

Such nice people and great service in a historic restaurant in old downtown OP. Been wanting to try it for ages and finally convinced the group to give it a go. Seated immediately and friendly service. Everything we ordered came out with impressive speed. Unfortunately the food just wasn't very good. It seemed like everything lacked flavor or spice. And some of the dishes really didn't live up to their name. The sizzling rice dish was only mildly warm and certainly wasn't sizzling. It was basically a chicken soup with some crispy rice dumped on top. It tasted okay but was not what we were expecting at all based on the description. I still liked the the setting. Reminded me of Chinese restaurants we went to as a family growing up.

First walked in and got that authentic "aged building" smell. Wife wasn't a fan but I'm ok with it. Host was super nice and inviting. Waiter was patient and attentive. Food was satisfactory enough to come back and try something new. My one complaint is the lack of veggies with both dishes. Zero veggies in the double delight and two measly pieces of broccoli with the sesame chicken. Other than this places is good to go. Next time we'll know to order a veggies dish to compensate for the lack there of.

Has the Dragon Inn changed ownership?? Something is not right there. Two men seem to be running it, and they are not experienced in running a restaurant. The lovely women who have been servers forever are gone ....

The owners were brother and Sister, the sister Catherine Bot was front of house and kept everything going. She left several years ago and is part owner at Rakar Dumplings on 135th. I don't think the brother speaks English and my last visit was not… Read more

I usually come here for dim sum, and it is upsetting for me to say that my husband and I should've chose somewhere else to eat for dinner. For dinner, we ordered fried rice and chow fun. Those two main entrées were okay. You can't really mess up those two fillers at an Asian restaurant. We ordered scallion pancakes- they came out soggy and soft. Not even crispy like how they usually are. The flavor wasn't there either. If I wanted microwaved scallion pancakes, then I would've bought them from the store and made them myself. My husband ordered the short ribs- they were bland and tough like rubber. It had a funky taste to it that he couldn't describe and he had to force himself to swallow it because he didn't want food to go to waste. I ordered the chicken feet- this is one of dim sum's signature dishes and I am so upset I didn't even get to enjoy one of the dishes I always order. It was dry and the flavor wasn't there. The service was fantastic. They checked in on us and made sure our water was filled. The timing of the food coming in and out was fine. The ambiance was inviting. There was a sense of urgency and I appreciated that.

It took them a little longer than I was quoted but it wasn't too much longer. The interior was very small with a capacity of 10. They do have a table but that's pretty much it. I would plan on taking it to go just due to space. Everyone was friendly and they made sure my order was correct when it was completed. I went with the beef and broccoli dinner combo. You get either white or fried rice. I went with fried. And it comes with an egg roll and a crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon was large and had a sweet flavor to it. FYI: They use imitation crab for my friends with shellfish allergies. I also ordered an additional order of Rangoon and I wasn't disappointed with that decision. I think the egg roll was just a veggie one, they do have a pork and chicken option. It was fine but I preferred the Rangoon. I would try the other egg roll options in the future. I also added on a hot mustard sauce. That's a must. It's spicy. The beef and broccoli was really good. The broccoli was fresh and there were a few carrots. The beef was tender and without that weird fatty, gristly stuff. Definitely good quality. The fried rice was a bit plain. It's literally just fried rice, no veggies or egg. But it's also not at an up charge so I can't really complain. I also ordered egg drop soup. It's delicious and such a good value. I highly recommend it. I definitely plan on returning to try a few other menu options.

Grew up in a different burb of KC and have been struggling to find the nostalgic Chinese food I grew up on. Well, China Chef nailed it. I can finally settle in as a Johnson county gal (my Jackson county bones cringe only slightly). We went safe. Egg drop soup, rangoons, beef and chicken fried rice. Ordered online at 545 and the site told me it would be ready by 745. Should've been a sign that they were moving some VOLUME. Get there at 8. Wasn't going to be ready til 820. What appeared to be the whole family was slinging deliciousness the whole wait. Lobby full of patrons. Notice the 5 star review despite the delay. I assume this is a Christmas night fluke. Portions are more than generous, real chicken (not the weird cheap rubbery stuff), umami on point. Excited to come back for a regular week night and branch out on our ordering!

Their menu consists of a lot of dishes, and some are quite unique .. you don't usually see items like bird's nest dishes at most Chinese restaurants around here except for maybe Bolings. Me and my husband visited on a Saturday night around 8 pm and really devoured our meal. The menu can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but you honestly can't go wrong with stir fries at any Chinese restaurant. For appetizers, we ordered chicken egg rolls, which were hefty and filling. For the main course, I ordered the chicken in black bean stir fry, and my husband got the shrimp Kung Pao chicken stir fry. We paired both with steamed rice. The black bean chicken was rich and earthy, with that deep, slightly funky flavor from the fermented black beans. It was very umami, salty and complimented nicely with the fresh, crisp vegetables and well-cooked chicken. I really liked it. The shrimp Kung Pao was spicy and tangy, with perfectly cooked shrimp (the fried shrimp covering was chefs kiss) and crispy veggies. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. The egg rolls were about $4 for two pieces, and the stir fries were around $17+ each. The portions are quite large compared to other places in the area, so the pricing seemed reasonable. For 2 main course dishes your bill could easily reach up to $40. Otherwise, The restaurant was clean, the staff was kind, and service was quick. It also wasn't too crowded when we visited. I would rate the service 4/5, mainly because we had to ask for silverware, condiments, and tissues separately. The food, though, is definitely a 5/5. Highly recommended! I will definitely return to have more dishes like beef chow fun, the soups and last, but not least BIRDS NEST!!
