Very good food and service. Reasonably priced too! My new "go-to" Chinese restaurant.

I haven't been here for quite some time. Drove by and have been wanting to try them again. But it seems every time I'm in the area, they are closed on Tuesday. Dragon Inn have been in business for over 50 years. The owner is very friendly and welcoming. If you want traditional Chinese food, this would be an ideal place. It's a small quaint restaurant with pretty red Chinese deco. It's a quiet dining atmosphere where you can enjoy your food and conversations with your friends and family. Pricing is reasonable and plenty of traditional Chinese dishes on the menu to chose from. I'll definitely be back again when in the area and in the mood for Chinese food. read more

I enjoyed the classic Chinese atmosphere, the charming hostess (owner?) and the tasty food during my dine-in lunch at this 50-year-old restaurant in a historic (dated 1915?) building in downtown OP. My chicken with assorted vegetables lunch (competitively priced at $10.75) included choice of entrée, egg drop soup, wonton chips, fried rice and choice of crab rangoon or egg roll. The egg drop soup was served five minutes after I ordered at the table, while the entrée was served 16 minutes later. I was somewhat surprised that they did not offer white rice or sweet and sour soup as options. The egg drop soup was okay, while the entrée had a reasonable amount of premium chicken and a good assortment of veggies, but an overabundance of sauce. I did enjoy the tasty, smoky, fried rice and the crab rangoon with plenty of creamy, tasty goodness. The service was mixed, with a first-rate hostess and an attentive but somber waiter. I noticed three dining areas (including a party room) with a mix of booths and tables, classic Chinese decorations, Chinese background music and a small bar. Very nice! read more

This restaurant made me question myself. Why do I even go to fast food Chinese restaurants? Dragon Inn has ambience. The food is 100 times better. The crab Rangoon are fresh and haven't been sitting on a serving line. The egg drop soup was served with lots of crunchy wonton strips and had flavor!. The entrées were served, just like I remember them as a kid with a cup of rice. And again the flavor of the brown sauce and, again, the crispiness of the fried chicken in the General Tsao's chicken. Absolutely delicious. We went there during the evening, but I saw they have the traditional lunch specials that come with soup in and eggroll. Why not patronize a local restaurant especially when the food is better? How many gems like Dragon Inn left. Red vinyl upholstered booths and chairs...it is a classic. read more

I hadn't been to Dragon Inn in several years but had a craving for Chinese and I was in the area. I ordered online via Yelp and everything was super easy. My order was ready when I got there and the one individual I interacted with was very friendly. My order was accurate when I arrived home. I started with egg drop soup. I could eat a vat of it. Just a tasty, classic egg drop soup. I would definitely recommend it! I also ordered crab Rangoon and egg rolls. Both were delicious. I would order both again. The Rangoon were large and full of delicious filling. The egg rolls were good sized and I liked the mixture. For an entree, I went with beef and broccoli. I upgraded to fried rice. The portion was generous, it ended up being two meals for me. The broccoli was fresh. The beef was good quality and tender. And the sauce was flavorful. I liked the fried rice as well. It's a bit plain but I'm okay with it. My boyfriend ordered the general tsos chicken and I tried some. The chicken pieces were quite large, he couldn't finish his either. The chicken was good quality white meat. It was a little sweeter than I prefer but I'm sure you can ask them to spice it up if that's your thing. I really have no complaints. This restaurant is low-key epic. It has that nostalgic decor that you just don't see anymore. You don't need fancy menus and smoke and mirrors when you can do five star quality on all of the classic menu items. When they serve you the mu shu, they actually bring it to your table side and prepare your pancake rolls right in front of you. Professional service, again with a decorum that is fading with modern restaurant formats. Family friendly because they are family themselves. They have a private room and give you concierge's level service if you have your special event there. read more

Eating here was nostalgic as I used to eat here all the time as a kid. It really hasn't changed, which is a good thing. Very traditional and very friendly service. It was all SUPER quick too. We placed a delivery order this evening through GrubHub. The ordering process was easy, and the menu at Dragon Inn offers a decent variety. However, I would have loved to see some tofu options on the menu. One thing I did appreciate were the portion sizes--they were perfectly suited for one person. So often, Chinese restaurants serve oversized portions, but here it felt just right. We ordered Crab Rangoon, but unfortunately, it seemed to be cream cheese with no other filling, which was a bit disappointing. The Shrimp Lo Mein came with tiny cocktail shrimp, which didn't meet expectations either. Overall, the food was okay, but nothing that would make me rush back in the near future. We tried it for the first time about 6 months ago. At the time it had great reviews. The food, unfortunately, was not good. There were 6 of us dining and no one enjoyed the food, and a few actually felt sick afterwards. I love supporting small businesses, hopefully this restaurant can turn it around. read more

We've been enjoying Dragon Inn for almost 40 years. In our opinion, there is no other Chinese restaurant in the KC metro area that comes close to the quality of food and great and friendly service that Dragon Inn consistently provides. We've moved out of the OP area, but still drive over 30 minutes for our favorite Chinese restaurant! I do wish they would join one of the delivery services (i.e. DoorDash) so we could enjoy their food more frequently! read more

Such nice people and great service in a historic restaurant in old downtown OP. Been wanting to try it for ages and finally convinced the group to give it a go. Seated immediately and friendly service. Everything we ordered came out with impressive speed. Unfortunately the food just wasn't very good. It seemed like everything lacked flavor or spice. And some of the dishes really didn't live up to their name. The sizzling rice dish was only mildly warm and certainly wasn't sizzling. It was basically a chicken soup with some crispy rice dumped on top. It tasted okay but was not what we were expecting at all based on the description. I still liked the the setting. First walked in and got that authentic "aged building" smell. Wife wasn't a fan but I'm ok with it. Host was super nice and inviting. Waiter was patient and attentive. Food was satisfactory enough to come back and try something new. My one complaint is the lack of veggies with both dishes. Zero veggies in the double delight and two measly pieces of broccoli with the sesame chicken. Other than this places is good to go. Next time we'll know to order a veggies dish to compensate for the lack there of. read more

Started off with crab rangoon of course, didn't see or taste any crab was really just a cream cheese rangoon. Had the general tso chicken it was really good and the chicken seemed really fresh, the perfect portion though because usually chinese food doesn't warm up well in my opinion. service was really not that good. it looked really nice and authentic inside though! read more

We ordered takeout from Dragon Inn, and I was expecting the food I used to have in the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties. All I can say is you can't go home again. My husband ordered Empress chicken and said it was like chicken nuggets thrown in a sweet sauce with some vegetables thrown in. We got the fresh egg rolls which were good but really too big to eat easily. The sauce served with them was disgusting- I think it was the stuff they use in the stir fries. Fortunately I have a sweet Thai sauce, so we were good. I had tofu with vegetables which was good except for the sauce it was in- it had a weird something to it, almost a chemical taste. On the plus side, the egg rolls, crab Rangoon and fried rice were the highlight of the meal. Sadly, I'm afraid I've ordered from them for the last time. read more

Holy Buckets what happened to this place? I used to go back when it was in Corinth and above average . The man that brings the food is the biggest jerk I've ever seen in my life and the food is disgusting and worse than airport food. I have no idea how this place could have four stars other than left over ratings from a decade ago before the family split up and went their separate ways. Something is glaringly psychologically off with the waiter. it's been noticed by several other reviews, and he should be nowhere near the front of the house. My brother and father have both had separate altercations with him when I was not there, to the point that my brother literally got into a shoving match with him regarding hot chili oil when the waiter shoved his hand for some reason. My brother shoved his hand back and stopped going. However last night I went there for this first time in years. I had completely forgot about my brothers story and unbelievably witnessed the same type of behavior out of this waiter I've heard about. He definitely does not want you eating at his restaurant and is extremely pushy and rude. Before you have the opportunity to explain what you would like to eat, he forcefully moves onto the next person. I barely was able to say "my kids will have the moo shoo chi.." Before he shouted "next order!" And pointed to my dad. I spoke up "actually, that was my kids order and I'd like the shrimp with chilies and peanuts." He didnt like that I also wanted to order! I won't make that mistake again! He's the Chinese equivalent to Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, but the problem is that his food is horrible. When the food came, he accidentally knocked my fathers drink over and caught it, but instead of saying sorry or just setting it back down, he had to pick it up and slam it right in front of my fathers face where his plate needed to be set, as if my dad had made a mistake. Very odd behavior, I've eaten many meals at many restaurants and had never seen this over my 47 years on earth. My dad picked it right back up and set it where it originally was. The waiter didn't like that either. They stared at each other for a few tense moments as if we were at a face off before a boxing match, instead of trying to eat at a restaurant. Meanwhile the nice gals working in the restaurant, pretend like they don't notice that this guy is tanking the atmosphere. I could very easily see that this guy wants to pick fights with customers. He should be fired quickly but he is part of the family. As a side note, this restaurant is nothing like it used to be back in the day. The shrimp is absolutely disgusting, very small, smells rancid , and is way over cooked. I ate one bite and didn't touch it again. I've worked at several highly rated restaurants in the KC area and have traveled to china multiple times. Run, don't walk to Bo Lings or Rakar Dumpling house. read more

We ordered the sweet and sour soup, cashew chicken dish, and various other chicken based dishes. The brown sauce that was used in the majority of the dishes was very bland and tasted very similar. The ambiance is very nice and service was good and everyone was friendly. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this place. read more

I ordered carryout from here Monday, June 27th & it was a good experience. The lady on the other end was very helpful & polite. When I arrived after 15 mins to pick up my order the gentleman behind the cash register was very nice. Service was quick & easy! The decor was very pretty as well from the quick glimpse I took. Very warm & welcoming! I definitely will need to return for dine in experience next time. Now to the food. I ordered the chicken snow peas which usually comes in white sauce but I like brown sauce. My husband ordered the shrimp with seasonal vegetables in white sauce. Both dishes were very flavorful. Only thing I wish is that the servings were a little bigger for the price paid. I was told over the phone the price was about $10.25 each. Could it be the inflation currently or was this about the regular price & serving before? Stopped in for the lunch special but were disappointed to find out they could not substitute vegetable fried rice for the pork fried rice in their Lunch Combination. We were able to order vegetable fried rice separately, so they obviously had some made. It seemed a simple enough substitution that would allow us to make a vegetarian choice. None of the three of us who came in ate meat, so none of us could enjoy the lunch special. Other than that, it was flavorful food but no extra frills (e.g., no crispy noodles to enjoy pre-meal). For more than 40 years, Dragon Inn, in downtown Overland Park, has been offering Kansas City Chinese food delights with exceptional service. I like to support family owned businesses whenever possible and it's arguably one of the best Chinese restaurants in the city. We've been coming here for years and it never disappoints. By far, I believe they have the best tasting crab rangoon in town! It's always cooked to perfection with the right mix of crunchiness and their signature soft, creamy, tasty filling in the middle. They serve a variety of soups, but I've never been able to pass up the wonton. General Tso's Chicken is a house specialty - and rightfully so - it's delicious. The Mrs. enjoys the Almond Chicken and pork fried rice, but she mixes it up regularly and enjoys a number of their other dishes as well. Fun Fact - the owner's of BoLing's (another popular KC Chinese restaurant) worked there as teenagers to learn the restaurant business. My only complaint about Dragon Inn is that they don't deliver. If dragons truly guard treasure, it's clear why they'd want to hold onto this gem. read more
